First off the food was very good. No problems there. We went there because their website advertised Taco Tuesday with $2 tacos. Got in the restaurant and there were only two other people in there. The whole vibe was kinda of depressing. Of the multiple TVs on the wall, only one was on. The first table we sat at was very broken so we moved to another. You order at the counter and I asked about the taco special. The employee said they stopped doing taco Tuesdays but the owner won't fix the website. A little bait and switch! Of the food, we really liked our food. My wife really liked her tacos and my steak burrito was also good. So what I thought was going to be my cheap date night turned into a $57 meal (with tip). They do one thing that I really dislike; no paper receipts. I sampled two beers, maybe 1 ounce each. Each showed up at around $1:30. Per the price listed on the taps that should be 3 ounces of beer. I was so excited to try this place again! I went to place a togo order and have a marg, and I see that they got a new menu and removed all vegetarian tacos. They previously had 5, and now they have zero. :( They went from 18 different tacos to SEVEN, so your favorite taco just might be gone as well! Also, they have an "italian margarita" that lists the ingredients as having sour mix, cointreau, amaretto, and tequila. When I asked what kind of tequila they put in it, the bartender told me there is no tequila.... in a margarita.... NO TEQUILA....?!?! I ended up just leaving and going to Barracuda. read more

My first impression was its dark, no atmosphere at all & very depressing looking inside. We were greeted by one of the employees behind the bar & he brought us menus. You place your order at the bar. I ordered the 2 shrimp tacos & it came with a side (I ordered chips & guac). Husband got a steak burrito. Loved the shrimp tacos & I had a Kona beer from the beer wall (self pour). Hops n Guac made me sad yesterday! I re-visited with my sorority sister after a hair appointment at Fringe, and it was a weird experience. First off, we thought it was closed at around 5:45 on a Wednesday. The interior is dark, the doors were dark, and we thought it was closed. It was actually open with a total of two guests dining in, who left shortly after we arrived. One guy was working and he was nice enough. We ordered a variety of tacos, the three (guac, salsa, and queso) tray with chips which was the highlight of dinner for me because I still like their guac, even though I think some fresh cilantro, more lime, and a little salt would amp it up. Sister liked the two tacos she got (I think we got 2 shrimp, 1 pork, and 1 chicken). Since the time change we were both sleepy and not really on top of our dining game and we both forgot about the very small "salsa bar" (my words, not theirs) where you can get your own lime quarters, and other stuff to add to your tacos. Also, it was weird the server guy didn't offer the ipourit wristband self-serve beverage option, even after I asked him about it. Instead, he had a split of Marlborough which we did get and it was very good, after offering us a split (or maybe by the glass?) of warm pinot grigio. Who even offers that? Sister had a bottled beer. When I tried the pork tacos, I kid you not, the pork tasted like last week's pot roast that sat under a heat lamp all. day. long. It was beyond shoe leather dry. Beyond the dryness it was absolutely flavorless. I gave up after a few bites. I noticed we were the sole folks dining there, and looked around and it was sad. There is, as another Yelper noted, a stage on the west side of the restaurant that is cluttered with stacks of various boxes - just not a good look. The small sized guacamole was the best thing we had. The queso was runny and flavorless and I wasn't interested in salsa. I really think the server should have mentioned the "salsa bar" as I would have use it to try to make the pork edible. As another Yelper noted, I really agree that the food quality and quantity has declined over the year and the staff seem apathetic. I wish Campus 805 offered a better variety of dining options, its basically these "tacos," sushi, pizza, and lots of bar food. Since I woke up this morning with a growling belly, in retrospect, we should have gone to Ale's kitchen for some heartier and more interesting bar food. We go here twice a month. Every menu item I've tried is good, but I am addicted to the pollo fuego. It is so hot and so delicate Viot's. Irving and his team welcome our group like family. Yes, not every tap is active, but the variety is good. Fountain drinks and excellent iced tea if you are up for alcohol. The variety of hot sauces and salsas is outstanding. Yes, it's kind of dark. Nevertheless I found a few Mexican lagers worth drinking as I waited for my food and watched a bit of a transition go on. Turns out, on weekends, this is a latin nightclub. Talk about versatile. Yeah, stay late enough and you'll see (most of) the families grab their checks and kids while the staff pushes the seating aside and the strobe lights come into play. I'm not at mad at all... Who knows, if ever I'm some combination of stuck downtown late, bored and wanna fit in and stick out at the same time... Amazing service! I have a recently formed horrible citrus allergy and, due to it being so new, hadn't considered the fact that so much Mexican food has citrus in it. The staff was incredibly kind, not even treating it as an issue, and made me my own guacamole without lemon juice, along with re-making a taco once we thought to ask if it had any lemon or lime juice. I felt horrible for bothering them, but they were so kind and accommodating. Also the food was excellent. I got three different tacos and each of them were bangers, even with a few of the ingredients removed. The ambience of this place is also on point, friendly and warm and open. When I heard about this establishment being located inside a once-used high school I had to see what it was like. It was much newer and more exciting than I expected! It is highly decorated with an assortment of trendy decorations to feel more at home! They also have a very large menu with a variety of food items and dozens of different tacos. I got the choose three combo of tacos with chips and salsa. The tacos I chose were Carne Asada, Ninja Pig, and Carnitas. The Ninja pig taco was a Korean take on tacos and was the most flavorful as well as my favorite one of the three. The carnitas also tasted great and would highly recommend as well. Now the highlight that shocked me was the pour- -your-own beer. There are dozens of choices to choose from and you pay by the ounce. You put a card on file and it is attached to a wristband of which you pay per the ounce of what you pour. Each beer is priced differently on a variety of factors such as the brand and alcohol content! They even had several wines to choose from on tap as well. I absolutely loved the variety of Octoberfest beers they had! They had a great crisp fall flavor and when coming to Huntsville, visiting this location is a must. The BEST tacos I've had in a while!! First of all I'm not from or familiar with Huntsville we were in the area & a good friend recommended we try this place! Man they did not disappoint! The spot is in a old school that has been converted to several bar's & restaurants! Great idea btw!! I visited Hops n Guac with a coworker while in Huntsville for work. Overall, my experience was ok. The tacos were good and both my coworker and I enjoyed them. I would get the tacos again. The tap wall was fun, as there were quite a few different beer options for all different tastes. You can get a wristband at the counter linked to your credit card, and use it to pour beers yourself. Hops n Guac is located inside Campus 805. In the restaurant itself, the decor was cute and it was pretty dark in there. There was what looked like a stage in one corner, though there were piles of boxes and other things on it so it doesn't look like it is used often. Despite it being nearly empty, some tables were still dirty, though luckily there were others to pick to sit at. When going up to close out, it took a little while to be acknowledged as the cashier was talking. I did enjoy the food and thought the taps were cool, but I don't know if I would return. read more

This place is a hip, pour your own beer bar inside the equally hip Campus 805, which for those who may not know, is a collection of businesses focused primarily on food, drink, and entertainment within a repurposed (gentrified, honestly) old middle school. Hops n Guac is one of several restaurants available to patrons, with a focus on Mexican inspired fare and a beer wall with around 40 taps. I'm not a beer drinker, so I can't speak to how good their selection is, but I imagine it features a lot of local brews considering there are several breweries within the campus itself. I ordered a meal to go because I was having a very rare craving for Mexican food and some of the creative tacos sounded good to me. The inside of the space is fun and festive. A little dark inside, but it is a bar first and foremost! The wall of taps is impressive to behold. There appears to be a hostess booth near the front but no one was manning it when we got there. No worries, we wandered to the counter where other people were ordering and picked up there. They don't have online ordering but placing it over the phone was easy and our order was ready and accurate when we arrived. The service was...meh, kind of unfriendly. No one was rude but I don't think I ever got any thank yous, have a nice evening, enjoy, etc. They were on the busy side, though, so maybe they were just scrambling to cover everybody. I ordered the 3 taco combination with beer queso as my side. I chose the tinga, pollo fuego, and black bean and corn tacos. I also got an order of churros to share with boyfriend for dessert. So, the thing about me is I'm not typically a Mexican food fanatic. Things that I don't like others may enjoy, and things that I enjoy a little might well be mind blowing to other people, lol. With that in mind, I thought the tacos were decent to good. The tinga taco was my least favorite. It was a little on the bland side; allegedly, it came with citrus slaw and queso freco, but what I got looked a lot more like one of their "gringo tacos" but with chicken -- a standard mix of lettuce, shredded cheddar, and diced tomatoes. Not sure if that was a mistake or what, but it was kind of bland. Not bad, but not impressive. I liked the black bean and corn taco better, though it was also on the blander side and had a too-heavy cilantro flavor for me. However, the corn was fresh and slightly sweet and there was plentiful queso freco. My favorite taco was the pollo fuego. However, be advised they are NOT KIDDING on the fuego deal - it is HOT. I'm not necessarily a heat-seeker, but I'm no weenie, either, and this had me sucking down water. However, it was very flavorful, with the sweet corn contrasting nicely with the fiery heat. The beer queso was REALLY good, perfect consistency with a nice tang from the beer. Chips were thin and quite salty, but a good vessel for the dip, as were the less desirable tacos, lol. We also enjoyed the churros, which were crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The chocolate sauce that accompanied them had a mild, subtle chocolate flavor that I was unimpressed with at first but that grew on me with subsequent dips. Overall, I enjoyed these tacos and the meal as a whole more than I typically enjoy other meals like it, so...not sure what that means, exactly, but if you like creative, hip taco combinations this place is worth a try! It was packed around afternoon but also, there was a birthday party going on. They claimed to have authentic Mexican food and I am a huge Mexican foodie. We sat outside and about 5-10 mins later our food came. We ordered tacos, fries, and corn (not pictured). The corn came out first and it was DELICIOUS! Very creamy and a good blend of flavors. Fries and tacos came out next. They didn't taste as authentic but it was a good try. For americanized-mexican tacos, they were pretty good. Holy guacamole! This place is good! I bet the preteens who used to attend middle school here wished their lunch ladies would have dished up this kind of food. This old school building now houses several restaurants and bars and we had fun after dinner strolling the halls and checking it out. It is a counter-dervice, seat yourself place. Plenty of room and both large and small tables. Counter help was good and made suggestions of their favorites from the menu. There are a lot of taco choices. We tried: *Birria-shredded beef * Carnitas-shredded pork * Avocado-fried * Black Bean and Corn * Ninja Pig * Chorrizo. All were muy bueno, but you might want to add a little flavor enhancing salt and a squeeze of fresh lime from the salsa bar to a couple them. Would order all again. The salsa bar provides hot, medium and mild options. Only tried mild - it was great. We also ordered the Brussel sprouts which were fried and topped with thin green apple slices and pistachios. They were excellent-crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. A little queso fresco crumbled on top would put them over the top! And we rounded out our slections with beer queso and chips and quacamole and chips. Scraped every last bit out of each bowl. We were glad to see the beer queso was not made with that thick gross orange beer cheese, which we only thought about while we waited for the food to arrive. Whew! We dodged a bullet! No offense to the chef, but I added aforementioned salt and lime to the quac. We had a variety of drinks, including some prrtty stout mango margaritas. We did NOT however partake in the $1 an oz beer by from the extensive number of taps on the wall. It is an interesting concept though and allows you to try lots of options relatively inexpensively. Overall a great dining experience. We liked the easy parking, big menu display board, bright colors and cool artwork. Bartender gave us backstory on the building and great service. Food is good (when you get what you want) but the service is subpar at best. I'm giving it 3 stars because because our 2 last experiences were good. Me and my boyfriend were desperate for street tacos after working a double shift and saw that Hops N Guac was open. We ended up spending $40 for 2 dishes and 1 side and I didn't even get what I wanted. Nowhere on the menu board does it say that you have to specify if you want your tacos Mexican or Tex-Mex style. He wasn't asked what style he wanted by the cashier and received American style by default. For a place that prides themselves for being authentic, you'd think they wouldn't push Tex-Mex tacos on people. Most of the pictures have just cilantro and onion so we assumed it would be served that way. I've also received it that way the previous times I went without asking. I just wished the cashier would have asked to avoid confusion like every other business does. I gave him the opportunity to make it right and either replace the tacos or even put cilantro and onions on the side, but he couldn't manage to do that and gave us just cilantro. It was slow on a Wednesday night so there was definitely time to fix it. I really dislike everything about Tex-Mex tacos so me and my boyfriend just switched meals. $15 went to 3 tacos we didn't even want. We could have just went to Taco Bell or another Tex-Mex place like Rosie's if we wanted tacos with sour cream, unmelted cheese, unseasoned tomatoes, and shredded iceberg lettuce. Not judging if you prefer that though. My boyfriend usually likes Tex-Mex tacos and said the food was "edible." If you're trying to just find some good tacos and don't really need the party vibe, I'd suggest going somewhere else like Taqueria las Adelitas instead. EDIT: Apparently all the toppings for the different tacos meats, are all different? All the taco meats are placed side by side without descriptions on the menu board. The quality of this restaurant has been on a steady decline. About 3 years ago it was excellent. The food is way over priced now. $6-8 for 1 taco, where are we NYC?? And when you get that taco, the meat is not premium cuts and expect to pull out chunks of fat. If you decide to just get 3 individual tacos, that will cost you more than a 3 taco platter. I was hungry, so I didn't bother sending my food back. My coworker said her nacho meat was cold as well. FYI: don't let the price of the $9 2 taco combo fool you. They have 50 craft beers that are self serve which is pretty AWESOME...you can put as much or as little in a glass & it charges by the ounce. As you can probably tell from the pictures and other reviews, Hops and Guac offers a very cool and much needed 'tap service', aka get a glass, pour what you want and put by the ounce. This is a pretty fun and novel way to try a bunch of different beers, wines and ciders, and compared to other places where I've done this, it's all pretty cheap. The only downside I can think of to this set up at Hops and Guac is that I wish they had a greater variety of craft and 'lesser known' beers. I think most of the beers I had on their tap I've already had on many occasions. They do have some rotations taps, so there's some potential for new beers to show up. Underrated for this place, however, is definitely the food. Their burrito bowls are pretty excellent, as are their soft shell tacos. I'm gonna give this place 4 stars because it has protentiss and it's a good idea. Visiting Huntsville for training and came here for dinner. Parking was bad. The building is an old high school converted into an adult entertainment center. Tacos were $2 each side it was Taco Tuesday so we scored on that one. Usually they are 2 for $9. I ordered the fried avocado, the Raja, the black bean and corn and carne Asada. I know, I went overboard! But 1. I LOVE tacos. 2. They were cheap! They had a few tall bar tables, then a bunch of 4 person tables and a few 6-8 person tables. We had to sit at the larger table since there wasn't anything else available. The problem is that the people sitting against the wall are stuck. Everyone has to get out when you need to get a beer or use the restroom. Poor design. They have a wall of beer on tap that is self serve. You get a wristband and tap it to the skull and then you pour. It's pretty amazing and I got to try a lot of beers I normally wouldn't have tried. They had a wide range from dark, light, IPA, cider, sour and wine. When you are done, you turn in your wristband and pay. Supposedly there's a 32oz limit. I only got to 22oz so I'm not 100% sure. Tacos were pretty good. The Rajas was my favorite. Cool place to try. read more
