A serviceable frozen margarita - not too sweet, not too much alcohol, great citrus bite!

A very tasty excursion to the hinterlands of Jackson County, Alabama where we were all suddenly hungry and just whimsically popped in to this surprising Mexican gem on highway 72. The owners are actively involved in the business and it shows. The service is excellent and the decor is distinctly Mexicana. And we all decided that the food was actually closer to authentic Mexican than the cheese sauce laden affront to beautiful Mexican fare that we call Ameri-Mex. We like to eat local and support local businesses and this place fits the bill. We normally drive by on our way to or from Huntsville and the parking lot is usually full. That's usually, but not always, a good sign so we thought we'd judge for ourselves and this place exceeded our expectations.

We have Acopulco fajitas. They were delicious. Family-owned. Friendly staff. No bar to sit at, but plenty of tables & booths. The margaritas are strong so if you don't like tequila, you may want to order virgin. I personally liked them. We got there peach mango & I asked toi get a mix of lime & strawberry. Support local!!

Lunch #3 bean burrito, cheese enchilada, and rice with no red sauce

Mexican food, you know the normal, not really authentic but they do have some authentic recipe on the menu (they have pretty good tortillas and they have the white cheese dip) Located right off of Hwy 72, a little hole in the wall Mexican place. This place is nothing to write home about but the food is excellent. Lunch combos are extremely cheap, they have margaritas and they have fresh chips and salsa with kickass cheese dip. I have visited here a few times and always get around the same thing, a lunch combo with bean burrito and cheese enchilada and rice, or a chicken and cheese quesadilla. Both are wonderful, both are always satisfying, and both always hit the spot. The chips and salsa are fresh, the chips are hot the salsa has a little chunk to it but fresh herbs. The cheese dip is warm and gooey and amazing. The seating is older, the decor isn't much, but the service is attentive and perfect. Definitely a local place and packed with a lot of law enforcement and locals through lunch and dinner. We will definitely continue to be repeat customers.

I picked up my son from college for the summer and before heading home he suggested we go out for Mexican. He suggested El Coyote and away we went. The restaurant was clean and fairly busy for lunch but that did not slow our service one bit. We were seated, got our drinks and was served our food all in 15-20 min. The salsa came out in a small carafe with the chips . I ordered the chicken a rice and it was not a small amount. It lasted me two days. I'll be heading back soon.

Very GOOD!!!!!! Nice service, great atmosphere, outstanding food.

Food is good. Drinks are good as well. Service is usually good. Reasonably priced. Salsa only mediocre. Will be back soon.

The place itself is small, quaint, and authentically Mexican, and the server was super sweet though not Mexican at all. Prices are VERY reasonable, though they've gone up slightly I think in the past few years (to be expected). Here's what we tried: -Mex Sausage Taco: 8/10 - Small, but great flavor. The tortilla on this taco was stunning: it was a corn tortilla, yet it was so thick and soft. That's not something you see everyday. The sausage (chorizo) was well seasoned and nicely crumbly, and it was an overall pretty good street taco. -Aztec Steak Burrito: 9/10 - The flavor of the meat inside the burrito was so good, as the steak was tender and well seasoned. (The burrito comes with a huge portion of mexican rice and refried beans, and while the rice is your average if not a bit less flavorful mexican rice, the refried beans are very watery and pretty lacking in richness.) The burrito is definitely the important part of this plate, and it hit the mark for me. -Chicken Tamale: 7/10 - Chicken was good, though I wish they had put cheese in with the chicken to add some extra texture and spice things up. It was a well made tamale, just not the best I've had. -Dobladas: 5/10 - We weren't sure what to expect here. Normally dobladas are a guatemalan dish where tortillas are simply folded and fried in a pan with cheese. This was almost like a gordita-esque dish, consisting of an even thicker than normal tortilla with chicken, lettuce, and sour cream. The chicken isn't packing a big punch, and while the tortilla is good, the lettuce and the sour cream don't add enough flavor to really make the dish sing. It's good though, and something more on the fresh side if that's what you're looking for. -Chicken Quesadilla: 2/10 - Wow, so so disappointing. The cheese was barely melted, the tortilla was dry, and the chicken was lackluster in flavor. Not worth it at all. Wouldn't come again, but not a bad experience.

Chips and salsa were brought to the table without having to ask, which is always a welcome touch. Service was attentive considering there was only one server handling the floor. Props to them for keeping things running smoothly. The food was middle-of-the-road -- not the best Mexican I've had, but certainly not the worst either. If you're looking for a solid, no-surprises meal, it'll do the job. The atmosphere is actually one of the highlights. It's a nice bar setting, well-lit, and wasn't overly loud during our early visit -- easy to hold a conversation, which isn't always a given at a bar. Now, the restrooms could use some attention. They're a bit dated and in need of updating. I did get a chuckle out of the handwashing requirement sign posted prominently on the wall -- right next to the one soap dispenser that happened to be completely empty. It makes you wonder how closely that policy is actually enforced. Overall, La Cabaña by JUAN is a fine spot for drinks and a casual bite. Just maybe bring your own hand sanitizer.

We've been to El Vaquero twice now to play trivia. While we enjoy the clean amenities and our…read moretrivia caller, both times, we've all been incredibly unhappy with our food. The restaurant is spacious and gets loud when there's a crowd. Thankfully, there's usually a place for our larger group (6 people) to be seated comfortably. Service is very nice but slow. Trivia runs for a little over an hour and both times our food has taken about 45 minutes to come out, despite our comparatively small orders. My friend who comes to trivia does like the food here (he always gets a beef chimichanga FWIW), but everyone else has now tried several different dishes and not once been satisfied or even just not unhappy. The one shining star has been the cheese dip. It really is pretty good cheese dip, lol. The first time I ordered the chipotle chicken, which is supposed to be chicken in a chipotle sauce. I was firstly surprised and disappointed to see these were small strips of chicken rather than a chicken breast. But that would've been okay...had the chipotle sauce been decent. It had no chipotle flavor and honestly mostly just tasted like sour cream. It was very weird. My parents have tried a beef burrito, beef taco, and chicken taco. They said the beef has an unpleasant metallic taste and the shredded chicken was, according to my dad, inedible. Most recently, my husband got a carne asada burrito and said it tasted so unpleasant he was concerned about whether he should even eat it. Fortunately, no ill effects came about as a result of it; he determined it was ultimately just very low quality meat with an unpleasant texture and taste. My father in law just doesn't order anything except a beer after coming for breakfast once and having a bad time there, too. On my most recent visit, I got a side of rice and beans to eat with chips and cheese dip. The rice had been cooked into sticky, mushy lumps and had no flavor. At this point, I have no idea what to order that might even come close to satisfying my palate. It's disappointing. We may be forced back due to circumstances like our availability in order for us to play our favorite game and have time together. If so, I'll continue to try different things until I can maybe someday find something that works. I want to like this place and wish I had the experience so many other reviewers have had.
