I'm in my senior year at Hoover and I absolutely love this school. Being in IB courses, I can vouch that the IB program itself is amazing, and there are also numerous AP options available. Barring a few exceptions (which exist in any school), our teachers are wonderful! Many are board certified and have student success and well-being first in mind. In addition, numerous teachers are actually Hoover alumni themselves, and as a prospective chemistry education major, I myself am considering coming back to teach at Hoover one day.
The most interesting thing about our school is also one of the newest ones. We are currently going through a pilot program in which, if successful, every student will be given an iPad (for free, unless you pay the recommended $35 insurance fee) to use throughout their four years as a Hoover student. It is currently in its first year, but teachers are finding ways to integrate iPad usage into everyday teaching. It is also less wasteful of paper, as we can use a stylus to write in notetaking apps.
With such a large student population (nearly 3,000!), there are more than enough elective courses and clubs to choose from as well. Despite the fact that there are so many students at Hoover, the clubs and electives give students a chance to discover themselves and make new friends in smaller groups. Our clubs include First Priority, Iqra, DECA, Key Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, and even Comic Book and Hackysack Clubs, among MANY others. Not many students fall between the cracks, and our high graduation rate really shows it.
No discussion about Hoover is complete without talking about athletics, and our Buccaneers kick butt in just about everything! Football, basketball, and swim and dive are the top sports that come to my mind when thinking about recent state championships that we have won over the past several years. (Yes, we are THOSE Buccaneers from that MTV show Two-a-Days.)
To wind down this long review, Hoover is a great school that I am proud to say I attend, and I will continue to be proud of it as an alum; maybe even one day as a teacher. We excel in academics and athletics, and it only gets better every year in my opinion. Go Bucs! read more
