This little hole in the wall has great food! I had a small BBQ chicken plate. My sides were fried okra and onion rings. They also included rice that had been cooked with the roasted chicken, two slices of white bread, a container of sauce, and a big piece of homemade pound cake. Hubby had a large rib plate with all the above sides, except baked beans instead of the onion rings. It was all delicious and more than we could eat for a very reasonable price. It's small, but there were several comfortable booths, and they do a lot of take out business. There ain't much in Opp, Alabama, but Hook's was a gem. read more

We stopped here on the way home from the beach on a Wednesday for lunch. Excellent bbq! My husband ordered their special and it was a good deal: bbq sandwich, drink and chips for 6.50. I enjoyed and regular bbq sandwich with 2 sides (home cut style potato fries and delicious sweet coleslaw) Only 5.95! I appreciated the sandwich being over stuffed with bbq and the mild sauce was delicious and in a separate side cup. My entire family ate and was full for $35 bucks and it was delicious. Took a slight detour to try this place per yelp reviews and we are from Nevada and need some real BBQ! They have an order window outside which is the first thing I noticed - along with all these strange little black bugs that were flying around. Some of them were doubled up like mating. There were a lot of them! I'm guessing it's an Alabama thing I've never seen that type of fly or whatever they are. Anyhow I think they liked the smell because we sure did. There's actually an indoor seating area not just a pick up window like I originally thought. Ordered what you see in my pictures. Very good!! The pork was a little lukewarm for my taste, I prefer hotter temperatures, but hubby liked it. Ok so I have to talk about my grilled cheese. I mean it's just a grilled cheese right? Well this bread was unbelievable!! It was so thick like a Texas toast type i wanted to order another one immediately until I realized I had a dress to fit in that night. The cheese was American which is not my favorite but it totally worked! Looking back now I should have just ordered another one given the fact I'll probably never be in the area again! :( we made it just before the lunch crowd apparently because after we ordered, the line seriously grew to at least 10 people and more were parking. The people are AWESOME here and the fried okra is legit the closest to grandma's fried okra Ive ever found! It's a little hole in the wall but a local favorite with good reason! The prices are fair and portions are freaking enormous for what you pay. Sometimes it's a wait depending on what you order, it's well worth the wait! You even get a slice of cake with the platters so for $13-20 you get dinner AND dessert my 2nd cousin told me about this place because she's been coming here since she was a kid! She wasn't lying when she said the pulled pork sandwich was the best she's ever eaten!100% recommend the Opp location because they're fantastic! Great food and great people. I drove semi longhaul for 30 years and this location is in my top 2 for the entire country (lower 48 states) and that's saying alot! They rival my favorite place in Texas Soulmans and in a competition between the two they'd give soulmans a run for the money! I just wish they'd add a beef brisket to the menu. I had the best ribs I've ever had in my life, even exceeding my Austin TX location! They were fall off the bone delicious s flavorful. We had a confused order but once straightened out it was well worth the wait! I will say that the pound cake was also the best I've ever had! I over ate and still have some leftover for supper. Yes, before there were Hook's in Troy, Luverne, and (now closed) Dothan, there was this unassuming little barbecue shack at the corner of US 331 and MLK Jr. Blvd. I have spent a good bit of time in Opp. More than most, who are simply passing through. There are several good eateries in the area, but Hook's takes the cake. And speaking of cake, make sure you grab a slice of their homemade pound cake, which comes with most of their combo dinners. Ok, what to eat? It's hard to go wrong, from BBQ chicken to their great BBQ pork and pork ribs. My favorite dishes are the BBQ pork sandwiches with their homemade rice, the ribs, and the barbecue potato (the best I've ever had!!). Wash all that down with some sweet tea and it's hard to go wrong. This used to be the best in BBQ but of late it has gone down hill dramatically. The last time we ordered we all got Medium Pork plates and there was barely any sauce on the meat. The potato salad was tasteless and the beans tasted canned. I always look forward to the Pound cake but it was AWFUL, it tasted like rancid fat and was bone dry. I gave it one star because it would not allow me to give a negative rating. We arrived and there was no one in the sitting area. When we went to the counter to place our order, we were informed they were out of rice, ribs and chicken. This was at 630 on a Saturday evening. So we placed our order and I noticed there was a line forming. We got our drinks and sit down to watch the Women's softball games. I noticed the people who placed orders after us, received their meals prior to us. I asked the lady who took our order, what's going on? She stated "We are waiting on the fries." About 3 minutes later she brought out our meals. I opened my container and their were 7 French Fries (luke warm) and there were 3 Onion Rings with pieces. I walked up to the counter and asked to speak to the Manager. A young girl in her 20's came out and I asked her to come to the table. Her name was Haley. She was dressed in a dirty T-Shirt. I showed her my food and asked this is what we were waiting for? I ordered the BBQ Plate with French Fries. and Onion Rings. I got 7 fries (Luke warm) and 4 onion rings. I handed Haley a French fry off my plate and she stated " This is warm!" Then I asked about the Onion rings, Haley stated ' What have you never eaten here before, a small is 4 rings and a large is 8 rings." She rolled her eyes as if I was inconvenience her with my questions. I could of drove 1/4 mile further and received better serve from the KIDS and Burger King. I do have to admit the BBQ was good but everything else was lacking. read more

My parents live in Atlanta and they always have to have Hook's BBQ when they visit. It's just a known fact we eat Hook's the first night they visit. They can't get BBQ this good in Atlanta! This is the first time I have ever written a review and DON'T like writing reviews but this food I just got today, 10/3/2013 was awful. To start with it was cold when I picked it up and the BBQ sauce, I'm guessing tasted like ketchup and was all over my plate and all over my other food that I couldn't get to actually taste the food itself. It was so tart and just plain nasty I couldn't eat all my food. My BBQ was very dry and had hard chunks in it. AWFUL EXPERIENCE FOR ME read more
