This place is awesome to grab some manapua for breakfast. Fair warning, be prepared for Hawaii time here, but it was worth it. We arrived a little before Honolulu Kitchen opened (at least based on what Google said the hours were). Even then, it was really another 10-15 minutes before they actually opened and started taking orders from the queue that was already forming. You can tell from the people in the queue that this is a popular local spot. For our breakfast we got an assortment of sweet and savory manapua, mostly all steamed because that was faster than the fried one. If you have time, definitely try them fried too. Each one has a symbol marking on it, so make sure to snap a photo of the symbol key displayed by the register so you know what's what. I remember finding out about this place on instagram when someone tagged them in Marvel manapuas. Yeah, I know right? What is a marvel manapua you may ask? Basically a manapua with marvel characters drawn on them! I don't know what they use or what they do but I recommend you go and see them for yourself! Every time I walk through the door I feel like I'm walking in to a family kitchen and they treat their customers like family. They actually used to take the leftover food and give it to the homeless, but since the beginning of 2023, I believe, due to the negative atmosphere they had to stop. But while I was there a 16 year old walked in and uncle asked if he ate, I guess uncle already knows his story, and gave him a bento and one for his sibling or mom too. That right there, shows the character, aloha, and love that goes in to the food and that's probably why it tastes so great! I ordered and paid for 34 mini manapuas total today. Uncle said he gave me 2 complimentary vegetable half moons, which I was thankful for. However, upon opening the box when I got home, I was only given 31 manapuas. I was missing 1 pork kalbi and 2 streamed spinach flavor. The husband found Honolulu Kitchen via Yelp and we decided to check it out for a late lunch; we're so glad we did! The owner, Steve is one of the nicest people we've met on the island. He was generous enough to provided us with several samples before ordering. Additionally, if you come after 3PM, their bento boxes are bogo! Best of all, Steve feeds the homeless after they close and I believe he also provides job opportunities at the restaurant. The husband and I ended up getting bento boxes, as well as their famous fried manapuas. We ordered their charsiu, pastele, pork adobo, and honey garlic chicken. Super helpful staff! Went to grab our flooring guys some lunch today. Honolulu Kitchen was the pick and I'm so glad I asked them what they wanted because I would've never seen the size of a mini plate (I don't ever get once choice minis lol). Super disappointed. Just walked in. Workers seen me and my daughter while they were helping a customer and then they walked in the back just as soon as they were done helping him. I waited for about 5 minutes and nobody came out to help me or offered any assistance. Finally a guy peaked out from the back and looked at me and just smiled a bit and went about his day. Like wow! They're located on Farrington Hwy in Waipahu in an unassuming strip mall area. Plenty of parking is available in the shared lot. I came here to try their mini manapua. With all of their positive reviews, I thought "what could go wrong"? I'm used to eating baked savory manapua's, so I was looking forward to trying the fried sweet ones. I only wanted to try 2 flavors - the lilikoi and the ube, which they were unfortunately sold out of, so I ordered the guava and haupia. The lady told me it would only take a few minutes. 15 minutes later, I had to ask another employee (a male, who I assumed was the owner) what the status was, as the lady was busy helping other customers and seemed to have forgotten about me. He went in the kitchen and a few minutes later, he came out with a haupia and a lilikoi (I thought they were sold out of that flavor?) Not sure what happened to my guava one. The man felt bad so he gave me a savory mini pork manapua, a hot dog musubi and a pork hash, which was very kind of him. One bite of the fried manapua's reminded me of why they have such positive reviews. The mini fried manapua's are really quite tasty! The fillings taste exactly like the flavors. They sell other Chinese / Asian food buffet items and prepared bentos at very reasonable prices. There are only a couple of places to sit inside, so most people get their food to go. Stopped in today to pickup some offerings for a visit to an old friend and a small bite before visiting. Gone are the tantalizing tempting choices on the hot food bar. Replaced with aging and slightly drying noodles. There is still a selection of Chinese stir fried dishes but not as tempting. Gone are the free samples of the fried manapua. You will still find fried OR steamed mini manapua cooked to order. Also other Chinese finger foods in pork hash, steamed rice cakes. There are still $5 mini bentos and slightly larger $7 bentos on the grab and go counter. I opted today for a box of steamed mini savory manapuas for friend and a mini bento for myself. Mini bento consisting of 2 pork hash, a sausage, slice of spam, piece of mochiko chicken, and a musubi. Still solid sustenance between appointments. Not sure if there was a change of ownership or management. The vibe is completely changed from previous visits. Man, I've been wanting to come here. I've had manapua from here before from my worker, she brought some to work one day, don't remember which one I tried, but I swear I think I thought it was good. And then... little by little, one person by one person started walking in at a time, so started getting busy. Like he'd look at us like... oh I missed a part, so I'm with my sister, we're ordering together and she was paying for everything, she treated lol thank you Jin! So idk, he was just like being weird, and I had to like say like, did you get my tea cookies, my manapua, porkhash, etc.. and then he's like yah, I got it. So then my sister pays, take the food to the table so we can separate our foods, and then he ended up not charging everything, and put almond cookies instead of tea cookies, from my order that he took down! When you walk in you can see the food and all the things that were served. It was set up like a cafeteria except the food wasn't covered. There were flys hanging around the food. The quality of the food was quite questionable but I tried it anyways. This place is know for the baos and there were a bunch to try. I tried two fried and two regular which were steamed. This business is family owned and operated, and the owners even gave us free fried manapua to try, which were delicious. I recently ordered a delightful assortment of buns, including the chicken teriyaki, pork kalbi, honey chicken, spinach mozzarella, and crab cream cheese manapua along with Oreo, lilikoi and Ube. I've been going to Waipahu more often and finding new places to try. Honolulu Kitchen is one of those places that reminds me of old school Chinese take out places. I'm glad this place is open pretty early and that they have a large selection of things. It seems like the have a lot of bentos and musubi, but they also have a whole counter full of foods to make plate lunches. I came in here to grab some food for a potluck. I was impressed at how fast the service was and I was surprised that there was no line. I was able to get a plate of chow fun for $19, which was perfect for the potluck. I also impulse bought a pint of spicy garlic chicken, but the pieces were too big for everyone to share and it ended up not being kinda awkward and left over. The lady helping me on the other side of the counter was nice and efficient. She's also a pretty good sales woman and let me know that they make smoothies and drinks on the other side of the store space. I must of looked hot and sweaty. Lol. I've also tried some other things from here from previous potlucks. People have brought their fried bao things and dim sum. She said it was kind of the same stuff, so why not? Walking in, you'll see the rainbow of prepared meals ready for you to grab and go. They have all the island favorites such as spam musubi, assorted baby/mini manapua (steamed buns or bao, as they are commonly known on "the mainland"), teriyaki dishes, fried rice, etc. You really can't go wrong. Heck, if you closed your eyes and picked something, there's a 90% chance you'll love it. There isn't much seating inside but if you're alone you could scarf down your meal real quick. Everything looks ono (delicious) and fresh! The employees were really nice and patient with our indecisive asses lol, so props to them! I would recommend coming in by lunch time for the best quality. Prices are average and parking is limited but never crowded. We came here twice to get their steamed Manapua- they are soft and flavorful and definitely worth it. Some days they don't have some of the flavors. The staff are kind and package the buns carefully. We loved Honolulu Kitchen from the moment we walked in, to the moment we left. The people here are so friendly and are so excited for you to come and experience their food. We were giving so many free tastings (sesame bun & steamed pork dumpling) both were delicious so we knew we needed to stock up on some goodies. The pastele one was hands down my favorite. It was so flavorful, moist, just out of this world delicious. I also loved the classic char sui pork as well. It was recommended for us to try the fried ones, since they're the only place to do that, and they were good but I'm a classic steamed person personally. My husband however loved them fried as he's not a fan of the sticky buns. The black sesame and Ube were the main two that really surprised us. What happened!!! I'm so sad the flavor just isn't there anymore. For years our family has enjoyed gifting the manapua as well as the pork hash. Today I bought 12 pork hash and 6 mini manapua we kept some for ourselves and gifted some now I'm so embarrassed because the pork hash was awful, zero seasonings just very coarsely ground pork with gristle ground in terrible just a big ball of steamed pork. Even the people in my family who don't mind eating whatever just to not waste anything are now chopping it up to make a stir fry with it. Also I asked for the mini baked manapua but was given the steam not as good as the mini baked. Is this still Honolulu Kitchen because my recipe says Aloha Island Manapua? read more
