I had a very complicated bowel issue and after being punctured by him and then bled after a routine colonoscopy with him. I did NOT hear from him as he was at a golf retreat until several day later. His assistant was so rude told me and my husband and just snippily said to find a urologist (we were new to town) and finally he called at a time he knew my husband was not home but then he yesmammed me on the phone to try to cover up my worrisome questions but then told me to get a resection without information on his end or any kind of decent bedside manner. He was very dismissive, cold and condescending. He was correct about my needing surgery but never spoke to me or or my husband but couldn't wait to blow me off to his buddy surgeon rather than explain his concerns to me like a human being. My GI in nyc was also perplexed by his manner given my slides. He destroyed my confidence in medical care down here. And after I was so terrified I would continue to have the same computer clicking, no-eye-contact doctor (as this is the new way). I was new to a city and very worried. Don't expect comfort from him. Thank God I found great care elsewhere.

Dr. Mea and the staff were absolutely fighting for me to get this medicine approved by my insurance. The team here is considerate, timely - and most importantly an advocate for the patient. That's what we all need right? A practice that's looking out for us when it comes to healthcare? Sounds pretty simple - that's what they're there for- right? but it doesn't happen all the time. So bravo to the West Ashley Primary Care group of Roper Saint Francis and Dr. Mea's staff who fought for me -successfully- to get the medication I needed.

The strength of this practice is the quality of care from Dr. Newton, who is a listener and supports a wellness approach to health. He is holistic, works with patients as a team member. He respects the patient's leadership role in this consumer-driven medical economy. He understands the systems of medicine that cause healthcare to become astronomically and unfairly priced--and as a result, he delivers cost-effective treatment. Ask physicians in large healthcare systems if they know the costs of the procedures that they order ! And they won't...but Dr. Marshall Newton does. A huge shout out, too to nurse Nancy...and to the remarkable staff at Newton Family Medicine. They are one of our family's greatest blessings!

The facility is clean and pleasant, and the staff were all lovely. Dr. Tabor took time with me, listened closely to everything I said, asked great questions and thoughtfully considered a plan, which we both agreed was solid. I walked away with complete confidence. They also drew blood on site. When I got t to the pharmacy my prescriptions had been forwarded and were ready. Altogether seamless. Since finding a great doctor is a challenge, and finding one that can see you quickly when you don't have an urgent concern, much less just need a new patient appointment, is a greater challenge, I consider myself very lucky. I'm grateful.

Dr. DeCastro is a gem--smart, caring, and willing to spend the time it takes to listen to you and search for answers to problems that aren't immediately apparent. Although she is very much Western and academic in her approach, she doesn't dismiss the benefits of alternative medical therapies, assuming there is research to support them. I had a very concerning experience at East Cooper Medical Center in Mount Pleasant involving a…read morenurse who identified herself as Wendy. My cousin, a Puerto Rican American, came to the ER with severe abdominal/side/back pain and was visibly crying and in significant distress. She called me earlier that evening crying and asking for help. When I arrived at approximately 11:00 PM, I personally observed that she was still in severe pain and distress. What concerns me most is that it was not until after I arrived, spoke with the nursing staff, and requested that another nurse assist my cousin that she received medication from a different nurse. After that nurse, Nicki, administered the medication, I personally watched my cousin finally begin to get relief. She was able to sit up, talk to me, and most importantly, she was no longer crying and visibly suffering from the severe pain she had been experiencing. That made the earlier lack of relief especially concerning to me. I had also requested that Wendy no longer care for my cousin because my cousin had become uncomfortable with the way she was being treated. Despite that request, Wendy returned to the room. My cousin was asking reasonable questions about how long she would have to wait for her ultrasound. She was already extremely anxious and began visibly shaking. Instead of helping calm the situation, Wendy told her to "stop acting like a child and start acting like an adult." I found that completely inappropriate toward a patient who was already experiencing severe pain and distress. I was also concerned that medication was brought into the room without a clear explanation of what it was before my cousin took it. I believe patients should be clearly informed about medications they are being given. Eventually, another nurse came into the room and treated my cousin with kindness and professionalism. That nurse even apologized for what had happened earlier. The contrast between the two interactions was significant. To be clear, my concern is not simply that the ER could not immediately determine the cause of my cousin's pain. We understand that emergency medicine involves testing and uncertainty. My concern is how my cousin was treated while she was seeking care and particularly the fact that she remained in severe distress until after I intervened and another nurse provided medication, after which I personally witnessed a significant improvement in her condition. We are still waiting to submit a formal complaint to ask the hospital to review the entire encounter, including the medication administration record, nursing documentation, and staff conduct. If you visit this ER, advocate for yourself, ask questions about medications before taking them, and bring someone you trust with you if possible. Patients deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect when they are at their most vulnerable.
