Hong Kong Taste is located in the strip next to Winn Dixie. It's small but has a good many tables inside and an open kitchen. It was clean, including their bathroom. I was met with a chorus of greetings from the front counter as well as the kitchen. The staff is always so friendly, here. I had placed an online order for pick up and had been quoted 10 minutes. I got there a bit early and got to watch the cook staff finishing my order. They're still taking COVID precautions, so their pickup/order area is behind a plexiglass shield. As soon as the last bit was packaged up, I was thanked and I was on my way. Their is a condiment station by the door where utensils, to go menus, napkins, soy, duck, plum, and hot mustard sauce are available. Even after a few stops along the way, my food was still hot. We had ordered the Hot and Sour soup, egg rolls, spring rolls, cheese wontons, and shrimp lo mein. The hot and sour soup was flavorful with tender bamboo shoots, tofu, and mushrooms. It had a pleasant sour note and wasn't too thick - a sure way to know it's fresh. This soup is perfect for sick or allergy days as it clears the sinuses. You can get them to adjust your spice level to your liking if you ask but I like mine as it is normally served. The egg rolls were crisp and fresh. I'll admit their current recipe isn't my favorite. It tastes like they have flavored the stuffing with star anise. It's a licorice flavor that I don't care for but my dad loves them. The spring rolls were wonderful! They were crisp but soft with a tasty vegetable filling. The cheese wontons, while fresh, were not quite to my tastes. I like my cheese filling much sweeter but they were still good. The shrimp lo mein was awesome with plump shrimp, tender vegetables, and noodles in a delicious sauce. What I loved most about this dish is that it was not greasy, which I've found difficult to find when ordering lo mein. Hong Kong Taste is my go to for Chinese in Clanton. It has changed little over the years it has been open. Some recipes have changed but good food and great, friendly service have remained a staple of this establishment. In all my years doing business with Hong Kong Taste I have never had a single issue. My orders have always been correct, I've always been met with a smile and warm greeting, and the food has always been fresh. read more

From Egg Foo Yung to Lo Mein and always get the Cheese Wontons which would be called Crab Wontons in most Asian Restaurants since they are filled with cream cheese and crab meat (overflowing). Great prices on the lunch specials and good portions. It's probably the best you're going to find in a rural town in Alabama. Wife had sesame chicken that was good, just a bit different than what we were used to. I had the house lo mein which I really liked the noodles but the meats weren't too good. I really wanted to have some Thai food but didn't want to take the drive so I decided to try Hong Kong Taste. I did get the crab Rangoon and those were delicious. They are definitely stuffed full and fried perfectly. I really couldn't decide what to eat, so I got some shrimp lo mein, which was very good, and the shrimp curry, which was only so so. It could be because I was hoping for a more Thai curry and it didn't taste anything like that. I didn't realize this was mainly a fast food pick up Chinese restaurant. I have gotten take out from Hong Kong Taste many times and was always pleased; however, I ordered Shrimp in Lobster Sauce late last week and it was nothing like what I had gotten there or other places before. I've never had Surimi (fake crab) or water chestnuts in Shrimp in Lobster Sauce. 1 - This dish used to have 6 shrimp and now has 4, assuming that that is what the surimi is now in there for to make up for the missing 2 shrimp. 2 - The water chestnuts had large black spots on many of them, aka, they had mold. I'm very disappointed and it will be difficult to eat anything from there again knowing that they would use ingredients that should have been thrown out and are changing the ingredient list and not posting it. read more

Best Chinese in Clanton! If you want a buffet, go down the road some place, but if you want hot and delicious Chinese food, this is the place. You aren't paying for ambiance or food from the trough. Coming from the UK I wasn't expecting much from this take away in a small town but it has surprised me in many ways! The egg foo-Yong with gravy is so good!!
