I've been looking for a Black hairstylist uptown and TikTok lead me to the Honey Salon. I came in after church to make an appointment/consultation. I have some hair concerns that I wanted to address before I committed to the BIG CHOP! I arrived on time for my 3pm Saturday appointment and was assigned to Kerinah. She had another person in her chair but after 10 mins or so came over to greet me and ask about the haircut I wanted. We briefly discussed but I waited for my time in her chair. Coming into a new salon is a challenging task for any Black woman with hair on their head. After chatting and showing her my hair goal, she left me assured that my initial concern wasn't anything to worry about and that was good enough for me! Naturally, it's Saturday, a busier time so there was some waiting for stations as she was doing another head but nothing too long. I haven't gotten my natural hair done in so long so it felt really good to sit and be worry free. The other stylists were pleasant and the vibe was giving what needed to be gave You see the results ‍‍but I walked out that salon paying whatever she asked happily!! And I blinked twice but said charge IT! Completely executed the vision and brought my confidence ALL the way back. April and May was rough on me I was so excited to get out that chair that I forgot to ask about maintenance. I went back the next day and she so kindly pinned my hair and touched me up a bit. I had such high hopes! I scheduled a relaxer, color, and cut. I could tell within 5 min that I wasn't getting along with the stylist I was assigned, but I continued anyway. Helene was not the right stylist for me. The relaxer burned, I sat under the dryer hottest dryer with the color too long, and the cut is nothing to write home about...a $350 lesson learned. Came in for some cornrows and left a bit disappointed with the outcome. The braids weren't very neat and wasn't worth the price. I believe it's marketed for wigs, so maybe that's why the neatness doesn't matter, but I did explain I will be wearing them out. I would come back to try a different style, but for cornrows it's better and easier if you just go to one of the braiding shops around the block, which I ended up just doing right after this appointment. read more

Trying out a new salon is always scary for me since I don't trust my strands to just anyone. Did 3 days worth of homework and scheduled my appointment at Honey Salon. Called and spoke with Latoya who covered everything (texture of hair, what I wanted done, if hair was colored or not, etc) before selecting a stylist for me to meet with. A really pretty salon located within walking distance of the train and the area is flanked with eateries so if your too early there are things to occupy you're time before you head to salon. When you walk into this bright salon bustling with clients and staff you go to the front desk to check in and are immediately taken for a wash. You are offered champagne or a water....nice touch. I was then taken downstairs and introduced to my stylist who came and looked at my hair. There are two floor (upper and lower) with washing stations and stlist seats on both floors. The washing began immediately, I only wish the woman washing my hair scrubbed my scalp which I find very relaxing but everyone is different.....not such a big deal. Then I was moved to another chair for rollerset and next under dryer. This salon is Uber busy so be sure to book an appointment....I am not sure walk ins are an option but you can call and clarify that. The staff are all friendly and accommodating while you are at the salon. I have been cutting my hair since Covid hit and needed a proper cut. Chloe (my stylist) was funny, listens well (I didn't want to loose a lot of the current length I have) and a really efficient stylist. She met all my needs. The price is a bit high but you ladies know we gotta pay sometimes to get it done correctly and you don't mind paying when you are SATISFIED with the end results. I got a wash, rollerset & cut was $170.00 not including tax and tip. I most certainly will go back for a follow up trim in 5 months. read more

Unsure what to rate it given I saw some ladies with lovely silk presses, styles and colors in there. But I have gotten dyed my hair twice here (my first ever dye jobs; both times I wanted an auburn-brown color) and it's just very disappointing and uneven. The first time, the ends were a bit darker and the stylist assured me they would get lighter in the sun (it was March); they did not. Still I liked how the color looked overall and I don't know hair places in nyc and a friend recommended this place, so I decided to go back for my next dye months later. The second time was worse - first of all they clearly lost my appointment or did not have me down in the system even though I confirmed my appointment via the link I received in my email asking me to do so. I wanted to get a color similar to the first time and the stylist (different stylist) was incredibly unhelpful when I presented her with the inspiration pics. She overall seemed very uninterested and just wanted me to pick and get on with it, even when I tried to get her to weigh in on what color would match my inspo best. I picked the one I thought looked closest but it came out suuuuuper dark and didn't even look like it was dyed (my natural color is nearly-black brown). She offered to make it a bit lighter but what happened was the roots got super light but not the rest of my hair. I got a twist out and didn't undo it until a day later so I didn't realize; I could only really see the roots. I googled this and it's called "hot roots", where hair at the root gets lighter quicker, but as a stylist I would think you would be aware of this phenomenon. Overall just really disappointing and I don't know what to do with my hair that was dyed twice today but barely looks a different color besides my very light roots. I really hope that other people have better experiences - if you're a novice maybe start somewhere else until you know what you want firmly and can advocate that. read more

I try to support most black owned businesses, I came here on a whim to get a silk press. Let me just say the service was great & most of the workers was nice especially the wash lady who offered me a few glasses of champagne (after, everyone else was asking for some lol). I was told a certain price and Babyyyy when I said I could've gotten my hair braided down to my ankles for that price. I understand business but adding on $55 just to trim my ends was absurd (especially after I seen an original price crossed out above it) & I still tipped the lady who wash my hair and they stylist who did my hair just because I appreciate them still. But that's not it, the silk press I received for $200+ didn't even last me 10 hours.. I legit had it wrapped, woke up and tried to re-wake again because I know I was trippin' (& no I didn't get it wet/nor was it humid). Long story short... Pretty prompt and reliable service, albeit on the pricier side, but worth the extra splurge. Service varies greatly based on the service you desire so be sure to do a little research on your stylist. Be sure to ask questions when booking your service. They truly do honor appointment times so book with confidence. Honey offers the option of complimentary mimosas, coffee or tea and they also have a fully functional and clean restroom. I appreciate that a number of staff members/managers check in with you to ensure your service is going well. The salon has pleasant decor and is very clean. I always get compliments on my hair when I leave this salon. No real complaints here aside from the price and having to figure out which stylist is the best match for your tastes. I am writing this review to save other patrons of this salon some of their hard-earned money. Although I saw several people leave the salon with beautiful hair, I was not one of them. I was charged $229.00 for a wash, deep condition and a basic fade cut. I picked this salon based on a review from another patron, who stated that her hair was in very poor condition. But she left the salon a satisfied customer. I was hoping for the same. I showed the stylist the desired look and he told me the price, beforehand. I accepted. however, the picture I showed. And the resulting hair cut do not remotely look anything like each other. He did what any local barber could and would do better, for a 1/4 of the price, that I was charged. He seemed quite pleased with his work. I would just like to say. Everyone wants to be paid what they are worth, but just because you can fleece someone doesn't mean you should. Almost a loyal customer... I've been to Honey Salon several times. The first time was a good experience, price was ok. However, when my stylist bought the ticket for my hair to the front desk so I could pay, the owner/ receptionist glared at her as if the price was too low. Red flag #1 Long story short I've been there several times but each time there was something off or disappointing. All of those times added it up and I'd actually rather make the trek to a salon in Brooklyn than return because of inconsistent and poor service. I've learned and finally have time to break it down: Sometimes you're offered something to drink Sometimes the shampoo person washes your hair well, often with a disgruntled attitude Sometimes a stylist other than the one you booked with will wash your hair and not well Sometimes (when in a pinch) and have to go with another stylist they will be scissor happy, trim your hair unevenly and straighten it without detangling well causing breakage Sometimes you'll get a cloak while they style and trim your hair (did not get one the last time I was there and shouldn't have to request it) Sometimes your hair will be parted and detangled properly after being washed (mine was not even parted the last time or detangled, straight to blow drying) Sometimes the steam treatment service you paid for is working. The last time I went I was not told that the steam machine wasn't working and I was under the dryer Sometimes the prices are inconsistent Lastly, attitude is everything. A business shouldn't pick and chose who to be kind to especially in my case having been a returning customer who is kind and tips well. I've spoken with someone on the phone who was so kind and professional and then when I arrived in person the owner was there- she was curt and barely communicative. UNEVEN TRIM. DO NOT LET THEM "DUST TRIM" YOUR HAIR. I made a last minute appointment the same day to arrive at 10 am to get my hair done. I was greeted swiftly and given hand sanitizer upon entering and was told to wash my hands immediately after. They are definitely practicing social distance and keeping clients safe...however, I came in with my hair washed and detangled, upon which the stylist told me my hair was not tangled and that I had done a good job of detangling it. She washed it for me and it vigorously scrubbed my scalp which I appreciated..but ultimately that process tangled my hair and she roughly detangled it. I would have appreciated a paddle brush or for her too detangle from the bottom going up instead of from the roots down on my damp hair. She was a very nice stylist and had great conversation. We decided I could get a cellophane over my hair since she didn't have anyone until 2 pm. The receptionist came up to me midway of getting my hair styled and told me next time I cant have add-ons because of how they schedule appointments, however, I made my appointment the same day. She was very rude in the way she spoke to me, as if it were my fault that she decided to book the stylist again without asking her what else was being done to my hair. I've never experienced someone treating the client that way. She made me feel like I was some child or something. I didn't put a deposit down because I came within an hour of making the appointment. She said we have actual clients waiting and that messes up the rotation, as If that were my problem when I was told we had plenty of time, which we did. I truly didn't appreciate that and how they attempted to overcharge me trying to say my hair was tangled etc. when it was not. What was going well, turned into a rushed experience and did not feel nice leaving the establishment at all. There was no ownership of their own error as a business. I was not late for my appointment. I arrived exactly at 10 am, in fact, the lady who was awaiting outside was late for her appointment. To make matters worse, they attempted to charge me $200 for what should have been half that price. I told the receptionist before I came in that I was pregnant, so I feel like they stressed me out more than what it should have been and tried to penalize me, the client, for their own error. Furthermore. the stylist explained that I could do with a light dust trim to finish my hair off so that it looks good entirely. I made it very clear that I wanted a dust (my hair has grown so much during my pregnancy) and I get up from the chair and my hair is curled tightly, so I'm thinking I still have my length. I get home to realize my hair has been flipped and I've lost all of my luscious maternity length, which I am devastated by. I cant believe how much hair was cut for a dust trim. It use to be down my back and now its at my shoulders. The stylist once again was very nice, however, I believe she was still new and lacked a bit of communication during the process with her superiors. I would have appreciated to have been facing the mirror while she cut my hair. I would have known that she cut so much off instead of trying to curl it up so tight and I get home to notice how short it is. It is just hair, so I hope it will grow back but all in all I know it will take time as my pregnancy is coming to a close in a month and my hormones will drop significantly. My hair is soft, shiny and the roots are great in the back of my head but have been rushed in the front. I believe the front desk staff should be more compassionate with their stylists and communicate better and not blame the clients. I can't stress enough that I didn't like how the receptionist came up to me and explained to me without knowing any facts of the discussion between myself and the stylists...its not my fault she didn't do her job and overbooked the stylist. I came here before and had issue with how my hair turned out and thought I would give them another try. I am sad to say that I did not feel good leaving the salon at all. I came here for their dusting service and left fully satisfied. Online booking listed the price at $25 but when I got in I realized I also had to pay for shampoo and a blowout. My total ended up coming up to $80, which seemed really pricey to me. However the service did not disappoint at all. I opted to go with Lolita after reading a review about her on yelp and I can't imagine having made a better choice. She was very well organized with tending to both me and the other person that came in after me for their service. While I was under the dryer, she was shampooing the other girl, while she was blowing out my hair, the other girl was under the dryer. I never felt neglected or like I was waiting on her for a long time. Not to mention she has such a nice calming spirit. This was my first time getting my hair done by her but I truly felt at ease. She wasn't too rough or too gentle with anything, didn't overdry my hair, and most of all only cut what needed to be cut! The overall service was also pretty good and they offer you a choice of tea, coffee or mimosa so I thought that was a nice touch. The only downside was the price. I deducted 1/2 star as there was a bit of a wait time. I foolishly booked an appointment online thinking I would be the only person serviced but that was not the case. The other 1/2 is due to their trim prices. IMO, $55 is a bit much for a trim (split ends). Other than that, this place rocks and will be my new spot. read more

I booked a shampoo and styling (braids) appointment with Lupita by referral. I was surprised I also received a short steaming sesh after my wash. I was charged the base price for wash & braids excluding tax. I would probably book with them on another occasion to do a silk press or so. All in all, I was partially pleased. The only downsides were the hair services where a bit overpriced for simple natural hair styling etc. Also, I was a hit displeased with the added tax whether paying with cash or card, which I found ridiculous in the case of payment w/ cash. I just had to post about Honey again after going back even several years later and still receiving top notch service and gorgeous hair in a reasonable amount of time and transparent prices from the start. I made a 10am Friday appointment and was out the door by 12:30 despite arriving 10 minutes late and sitting under the dryer to deep condition. Lolita was my stylist and immediately asked for the run down on my hair to tailor her work. Loved loved that she paid that much attention! When I told her I had been in back to back braided protective styles she noted the dryness of my hair and gave me tips on restoring its bounce and luster. I also shared how I had chopped off several inches during COVID lockdown and had been caring for my hair alone ever since. She really did an incredible job on my silk press and even explained why she switched between heating tools to avoid heat damaging my hair. I was shocked at how long my hair was despite having cut it myself in the summer. Just wanted to give an update because I have been a regular customer at the salon for the past few years. Lolita has been my stylist and she is absolutely amazing and super talented. Every time I leave her chair, my hair comes out always above my expectations. I usually get silk presses w/ hydration conditioner treatments. The hairstyle always last even when the weather isn't the best. Before going to see Lolita, my hair was pretty damaged from years of trying to flat iron my own type 4 hair on my own. But since being a regular, my hair is much thicker, longer, and overall healthier. The services aren't the cheapest (ex. trims, haircuts) however I do feel as though I have saved a lot of time and money after years of testing and throwing out products on my own that were not good for my hair. Every stylist keeps his or her station clean. I had a mimosa while I got serviced which was nice. It was probably the best shampoo I have had ever. The massage and thorough washing was delightful. I was tingling in my head it felt so good. Sidney did my four step hair treatment complete with steam and then my flatiron. I would highly recommend and I intent to return in 3 months to get my hair straightened and trimmed again along with the treatment. I went to this salon for the first time today and I have to say although the staff and salon was nice, I left feeling disappointed. The final price for the service I received seemed extremely overpriced. I got a wash/blow dry, a treatment (which consisted of me being under the dryer for about 10 minutes max ) and cornrows with my real hair going straight back. The service was fine and my stylist was cool but $160 is incredibly overpriced for all that was mentioned above. I was charged $55 for a trim. On the receipt it said "haircut" which is rather irritating because it was literally a trim. $55 for trimming ends feels insane to me. At most this should've been $100 or $110 total. Again, it's a nice establishment but I do think you will end up overpaying here. read more

I came here based on the Yelp reviews three weeks ago. I was told she was the best, maybe it was just a bad morning. She was set to perm, cut, and style my hair. I wasn't going to review and just leave it alone but after three weeks of patch work and expenses I felt compelled. The salon is very expensive and I knew that in advance and was prepared and ecstatic simultaneously. Firstly the staff was very pleasant, I called days in advance to speak to someone and get recommendations. I shared laughs and excitement with the front desk. I had been natural for 2.5 years and decided it was time for a sleek style. I had a style in mind, so I came with a few Pinterest pictures to show her. I prefer not to put her on blast, but the salon needs to be put on blast because, the errors were blatant and apparent yet I kept my cool. The first knee jerk to me was how she balled my hair up and just chopped it off without layering to make sure she had it enough for the sides. I specifically said I wanted tapered sides, but she cut too much off. Let me say it again, I was natural for 2.5 years- I didn't feel she prepped my scalp for a nice perm. My sides and back did not take the perm at all. She did not acknowledge that. I knew things were going south because the ladies upstairs at the front desk were very generous with the mimosas. They came up to us and we were chatting for a few minutes. One of them said I am so glad you're happy because she doesn't like to schedule new customers so early on a Saturday. She then said, are you going to get a Perm ( the Stylist had already permed my hair). At this point, my inside voice kept telling me to keep my cool. I did enjoy the hydrating conditioning. She wrapped my hair before I went under the dryer even though my sides were bushy. After my hair was dry, she clipped some more. I was taken aback and did not want to fuss as it's not my forte. I felt the heat of the razor but kept my cool ( so silly and foolish on my part). Customarily Stylists would show the client all angles of the hair, she did no such thing. She did ask me if I liked it and I lied. I spent $312 including the tip and questioned why I came to such a fancy salon that I knew nothing about to get my short pixie which was nothing more than a Bob. I was scheduled to return the following week. I decided to cancel and went to a friends Stylist, that's when I was told that my hair line was a few inches two high and I had a scar across the nape of my neck. So I really had high hopes, but it was quite possibly one of the worst hair experiences I've ever had. My hair looked worse coming out than when I went in. Do NOT go here if you have natural hair and expect to leave with a curly style (maybe, it's ok for a silk press?). I went for a color, trim, and wash n go - it looked so bad that I put my hair in a ponytail as soon as I left the salon and redid my own hair when I got home (after paying more than $200! So pissed!) The stylist I had mixed my color, but then gave it to the shampoo woman to apply, monitor and rinse. She literally never even checked on it. She did not have another client at the time, she was styling a mannequin the entire time. (Come to think of it, the mannequin got better styling than I did...LOL) When it came time to style my hair, she towel dried my hair so it was damp, put setting foam (not curl creme, not curl gel - foam! Into towel dried hair!) And then brushed, with a hard bristle brush to "define" the curl. I told her that the product she was using was not going to achieve proper curls. She was like "you want me to add something else?" She didn't even have curling product at her station - another stylist offered up her Design Essentials curling creme. But at that point, I just wanted to leave. I have worn my natural hair for nearly 20 years. I've also been to most of the curl salons in the city - Devachan, Ouidad, Hair Rules, etc. I know what professional styling of curly hair is. And this was NOT IT! I would have preferred her to just say she doesn't know how to style curly hair . (It's a shame too b/c I would love to go to a Black owned salon in my neighborhood, but I guess I'm headed back downtown.) To add insult to injury, my trim was uneven and I was charged for a "hydration treatment" that I'm not sure I even received. So for 3 hours of my time and $230+, I got the honor of going home to do my own hair. Never again. On balance, the salon team was very cordial and welcoming, so much so that I took two days to think about if I wanted to write this review. But alas, I went there for a proper hair do and definitely did not receive that. Maybe I just got a bad, disengaged stylist? Hard, hard pass on this one! read more

I got to the salon early and was greeted by a beautiful staff. When I walked in, my stylist, Lolita was washing another clients hair (and the client had hair like mine which I was already happy about) I was offered a mimosa which was the ! When Lolita began my wash I overheard her dropping gems to a budding stylist and I immediately felt even more comfortable with her. She was humble and beautiful both in and out. She washed my hair with a tingling tea tree shampoo and told me me we would converse more about my hair when I was done. "Shampoo time is the time to relax!" She really must have felt my salon anxiety or she's just dope AF in general.. (probably the latter.) Anyway, I was put under the steamer with deep conditioner. She washes it out with cold water which I love! I loved every minute of this salon experience. Lolita was patient, well versed and even shared one of her personal hair secrets with me. Will I be back?! Hell yess!! I'm going to Lolita every 3 months so she can trim my hair from now on! She SLAYEDDDDD this silk press however I don't think it's for me more than the once a year that I apply heat to my hair. I love my thick lustrous curls. read more

First the pros: The salon is conveniently located in Harlem not only great for transportation via train but you can easily find parking on the street. In addition the staff are nice and the caliber of products used are great and mirror what I would use at home (Jane Carter,etc.) Cons: I made an appointment and arrived 10 minutes before the set time only to find out it was booked in the computer for 30 minutes later so I had to wait for my stylist to arrive. Overall my hair was done well when I left the salon, however the next day (after a blow dry and flat iron and trim) my hair looked like week 2 hair with puffy roots. Lastly I paid at the salon and was called back because the stylist and receptionist forgot to charge me for a trim. The trim ended up being $55(which is absurd). I went back and paid for the trim but it's very unprofessional to forget a service charge of that amount and a waste of time for clients to return to the shop. In summary only use this place if you are in a bind other than the pros of the location,good products and being able to keep your dollar in the black community it's not worth it. read more

I called and scheduled an appt. with LaToya. On the day of, she was no where to be found. The desk staff couldn't even find my appointment and spent almost an hour arguing that I did not have one. I asked where LaToya was but they kept ignoring my question and eventually pushed me off to some other stylist. They led me to the basement level which is dark a dreary and complete opposite of the nice ambiance upstairs. The remainder of my appt. was a nightmare. There was an army of stylists down there talking loudly, gossiping and ignoring/ having an attitude with their customers. My hair is in a relaxed short cut. I just come for a little trim, wash, set. I explained and brought a pic of the style I wanted which was pretty much the same as I walked in with. A simple pixie. The next thing I knew, the "stylist" was slabbering this black gel goop in my hair, dipping a dirty comb into this huge, used, tub of whatever it was. Now, why would you put anything like that onto relaxed hair?! I questioned what she was doing but she insisted that it would look good after and put me under the dryer but not before putting a million wrap strips on my head so tightly, my head was throbbing. When I told her they were too tight, she just ignored me. Of course, the end result was horrible so I calmly explained this was nothing like I requested. With an attitude she led me back to the sink to wash it a second time and dry it without bothering to put conditioner in it. Then she pulled out her flat iron and proceeded to give me the old 70's church lady curls. When she finished she stuck her hand out as if to say "pay me" with an attitude then quickly led me upstairs to the counter. When I got up there, I got looks of shock from people standing by. The receptionist could also see my hair looked horrible and she did not offer any kind of customer service to rectify the situation. I politely paid and vowed to NEVER return. The owner Latoya is very dishonest and irresponsible by making appts then being a no show on the day of. There are a bunch of stylists in the basement who can't at all do hair and I am willing to bet aren't even licensed from what I observed. I am shocked all my hair did not fall out afterwards. I am grateful I refused to get a relaxer as the "stylist" kept trying to upsell me into getting- despite it being obvious that I was not due for one. She also tried to talk me into booking a weekly standing appt. with her wanting to charge ridiculous prices. I was dressed expensively and carried a very expensive purse. I suppose she saw me as a sucker she could scam. I am also shocked this "salon" has been open this long given how horrible it is. Save your time and your hair and avoid this nightmare at all costs!! read more

Lolita!!! My girl you SLAYYYED my hair. I thank you for giving me faith. After having a horrific silk press experience at different NYC salon, I was scared I wouldn't find a salon up to the standards of CA. My girl Lolita saved me. She knows exactly what she's doing. She is knowledgeable in natural hair and you leave looking like the better YOU. I came in for a silk press which includes a wash and treatment. And I added in a trim as well. I want to write the longest review, but all in all, know that Lolita did a wonderful job and took her time to really listen and give my hair what it needed. You will not be disappointed. Generally a good salon. Prices are way too high but I can rely on them to be consistent. The shop is clean and in a safe part of town. They offer mimosas and the music is good. Also they take walk-ins pretty much all day everyday. The receptionist are also nice. The short darker skinned lady is my favorite. She has a warm soul. If you have natural hair - this shop is not reliable at all. I would primarily go to them for heat styling or weaves. read more

My hair has not been the same since I got a silk press at this shop. The texture and curl pattern has changed. It's kinky at the roots, but thin at the ends--like when I was transitioning out of my perm years ago. I hoped that it was temporary--maybe due to the products that had been used. Since my hair has failed to return to its prior fullness and kink now three months later, I can only surmise is that it's heat damage. I don't get my hair pressed often, and when I have in the past I have never had this outcome. I'm pretty upset that my hair maybe permanently altered because of one salon visit. read more

I was here on 10/31/2020 this was first experience her and it was horrible I have natural hair so I thought I was goin somewhere that knew how to treat natural hair NO!!! My stylist yanked my hair so hard while washing I had to tell her to stop she was so rough did not deranged from the ends at all then she also left me with several burns in my scalp it's Sunday and the place is closed not sure what can be done for me at this point but this was the worst hair salon experience ever I paid $100 to have hair ripped outta my head and burns with puss coming out not to mention they called to reschedule for a later time please reconsider goin here seems to only be safe for regulars that kno the stylist read more

Writing this review at 3am because I cannot sleep due to how tight my hair is. I addressed this with my stylist (who never told me her name) and she snapped back that it's supposed to be tight then went on an explicit rant about how great of a stylist she is. I almost cried many times in her chair due to how much pain I was in but every time I said something to her, her attitude was so off putting. My hair ending up looking great but I am so afraid of the damage I might have to my scalp. I was so excited to support a Black salon in my neighborhood and invest in coming to them bi-monthly, but the service I received here certainly did not live up to my expectations. read more
