Jele the braider and the young lady at the front desk who worked on Monday April 27th were dismissive and rude during my appointment. When I would ask SIMPLE questions I was meet with a brusque and dismissive attitude from BOTH of them. I will not be returning. I am more understanding of the young lady at the front desk because, based off of Jele's brusque and disrespectful demeanor, it is clear that the younger lady does not have examples of quality costumer service or professionalism from her older colleagues. Your website uses terms like "peace of mind" and "cared for"and "ease" and claims clients are "TREATED LIKE ROYALTY". Well I was treated with disrespect for literally no discernible reason other than maybe the boss wasn't around so they can get away with it. I am sure Jele and the young lady will have excuses, but I would strongly request that management has a serious conversation with them about costumer service and their attitude. read more

I waited to leave a review because I wanted to give them a chance to fix my hair, but they have been ghosting me, so at this point I feel extremely disappointed and taken advantage of. I paid $205 for basic traditional knotless braids, and within THREE DAYS they are unraveling. That should never happen. Ever. I asked for a bob-length style. The stylist braided my hair all the way down to mid-back and then, instead of taking the time to redo it properly, cut the braids at the end of the appointment. I walked out with uneven, choppy lengths that I had to go home and fix myself. After spending over $200, I should not be doing corrective work in my own bathroom. The entire service felt rushed. The braids were not gripped properly, the ends were not tied off before dipping, and they were not sealed at all. I requested curly ends. they were barely curled and clearly not set correctly. Because they weren't tied or sealed properly, the braids are actively coming undone. I have had to put clear rubber bands on the ends just to stop them from unraveling. That is unacceptable for a "professional" service at this price point. What's even worse is the way they handled it afterward. I reached out immediately to have this fixed. They asked if I could come the same day I expressed my dissatisfaction. When I explained I was at work and couldn't make it that day (and even offered an alternative day!!!) , they completely ghosted me. No follow-up. No effort to reschedule. No accountability. They don't offer refunds, and apparently they don't stand behind their work either. Charging $205 for rushed, poorly finished braids that don't even last a week... and then ignoring a paying customer who asks for it to be corrected is unacceptable. I genuinely feel scammed. They treated me like I was their daughter. Fed me and my sister, who wasn't even getting her hair done. Use to love watching the African soap operas / shows. Anyway I digress. So this thing called social media has definitely changed the game. I was able to pre book my appointment, pay a deposit and not have to worry about buying the hair. I got a text from the salon confirming my hair mix so they can pre mix before my arrival and when the office /store manager/ owner arrived she pointed all guest to their braider and the magic began. The parts are done neatly but I will be honest i'm not used to all the gel or product that has to get used to maybe facilitate with braiding of the hair ? it did irritate a little and I should have said something but we progressed. A second braids came on to braid the ends. And i will say it took 4.5 hrs to do medium back length boho braids on medium density natural hair gal like myself. MY hair was also blow dried well thanks to The Carter NYC (find them on google and run for an appointment). But lets not forget they were so so sweet and had a mother's day brunch set up for the clients. the food was tasty and well seasoned. The sorrell/bissap drink was slamming. This shop was such a pleasant experience with thoughtful design and calming energy. My stylist did an amazing job on my boho knotless and finished in 5.5 hours with no extra hands. Pros: can finish the style quickly - usually can get knotless braids here within 5 hours and they usually last long for 6 weeks of wear without getting too frizzy or undone. Cons: not the place to go to if you care about the health of your hair and scalp. they don't use heat protectant when blow drying intensely and it seems like they don't really know how to blow dry 4c hair efficiently. There's a tendency to pull harshly while braiding. My scalp has been in pain for several days since I last went with red bumps at the nape. Several times, the braider would grab a fistful of hair and pull unreasaonably hard for the dipping at the end. The wait time also isn't great. I think they may be trying to squeeze too many people into one day and you may not get seen until an hour after your initial booking. I don't think I will go to this location again. read more

I have very mixed feelings about this salon. Did I get my hair done as requested....yes. Was it correct...yes...kinda. If you are just going off those two things this place is great. But let's get to the real experience. *I will also precursor and say I can braid hair as well.* 1. Booking I booked them off their Instagram content. So I book my appt and post my deposit. After I decide to do my daughters hair too. There are only 2 styles listed in their website for kids, so I wanted to verify cost before booking. I send a message on IG to the page. I reached out on a Thursday and she responded the same day. However It wasn't until the following Tuesday that I was finally able to get the appt booked because she'd just stop responding which is frustrating. I finally called her. She apologized cause I was annoyed and said she is best by call, but she had my number the entire time. 2. Day of Got there at 9. Our hair was started promptly. I requested my hair be pre washed in apple cider vinegar to avoid irritation. The fact I was asked again what color and I saw them pull it out the bag said they didn't do it. Thankfully I carried my daughters hair because she has very sensitive scalp and I've had to take down styles in 3 days if not pre washed. I was told it would take 5-6 hrs. LIES. Started at 930 and I didn't leave until 530. No breaks were taken. Also my stylist was told multiple times to ease up on her grip and tension. Let's say, I cannot put my braids up because they are tight. And they have some tool they use to part and that ish is sharp as hell. I had to tell her not to use it. But then she would scrape my scalp with the rat tail comb parting the same place 20x. My daughter had ZERO issues, her stylist was absolutely amazing. 3. The space I know covid shots are being given, but covid is still real. There is a Barber in the back who stays full with at least 2/3 people waiting at a time. I counted 4 men who just walked in with NO MASK ON. Carried on conversation while waiting as well. NO ONE TOLD THEM ANYTHING. It made me very uncomfortable. I only saw one braider wipe down her station after her client with disinfecting wipes. 4. Cost These braids arent cheap. Mine came out smaller than I expected for medium. My daughters, she charged me for extra length (they went to her bottom) but I never asked for them that long. In fact when I came in I said she's 11, I don't want ass braids. But because of how she stretched the hair to keep the color they got very long. Because the stylist was so good with her and I was just tired and ready to go, I just paid it. They take payment via Zelle. Overall I got what I requested. But the lax covid protocols, the inability to not braid tight, and the time it took to do our hair, I would think twice about returning. I was in pain from the blow-drying I feel like that was the person's first time blow-drying someone's hair...anyone that deals with natural hair knows you should part it and blow dry it...not just rake the blow dryer comb through it and my stylist clearly didn't want to be there and was ready to go. Call it favor from the Lord but I was able to be serviced by Fatou who did my knotless braids waist-length with 1b/27 and was so meticulous while doing it. The hair came out neat, flat, and I came in at 10:18am- was out of her chair by 2:40pm. The salon itself was neat and had trendy greenery on the walls to create a nice vibe. It wasn't too hot or too cold in there either. Also along with the customer service, I was late for my appointment and with much sincere apologizing and praying, they decided (my braided) to still accept my appointment. I would definitely recommend being there on time and tipping accordingly especially to my new favorite Fatou!!! I will request her each time. I truly love my hair! Also the hair is provided with the service and on their booking site it lets you choose which hair color you would like to use, style you want to add, other add-ons, etc. It's been a couple since I got my hair done and I've been complemented on my new look! The hair they use has to be very high quality hair because it's like typical braiding hair but softer (feels like- human but I know it's not). I definitely was favored that day. I've been going to this studio for a while getting my hair primarily in box braids of medium size. There is only one person braiding your hair at a time and they don't take breaks in between. They are fully committed to completing your hair in a timely manner. Depending on the size and length of my medium braids and how well I have prepped my hair, my appointments have taken anywhere between 5-7 hours. They always come out beautiful. I typically bring my own hair since my scalp is easily irritated but this last appointment (less than a week ago) I decided to give their hair a try and it has been fine so far and looks great. I've gone to two women named Astou and Anta has also done my hair twice, including my most recent visit. Again, each time my hair was perfect. Scheduling is easy. I typically schedule through their instagram link. Most of the time you can find an appointment within a weeks time but this is not the place to go if you need a rush appointment. They are also excellent at communicating prior to visits via text. Answering any questions I may have. The studio is usually clean (those who have gone to braiding spaces know what I'm talking about). I have visited many hair braiding shops in Harlem and this is certainly a more professional setting with receptionist, bathrooms you can confidently use, and a place you can comfortably sit for hours at a time. I found Jamilah Beauty Studio via Instagram. At first I booked small waist length knotless braids, triangle parts but a day later I changed my mind and wanted medium instead. I reached out to see if changing would be an issue and I received a response within a timely manner stating my appointment was updated to medium knotless! To me that is great customer service! My appointment was at 9am and the braider didn't arrive until 9:30am. She apologized for the lateness and got started right away, and she didn't take any braids which I appreciated. I was finished around 3:30pm & the knotless braids came out very beautifully! I went to Florida for my birthday and so far I believe 8 different people have either flagged me down in stores or on the beach asking where I got them done! I went there this past Sunday having scheduled a 10am appointment a month in advance. It was not worth the $210 I paid for knotless braids. Advice, do not allow any of the younger ladies to do your hair. They do not have enough experience and will braid your edges bald. Plus not all of my braids are knotless some are box braids smh. Also, I asked for medium braids and parts. These braids are small and I believe the hot water was not hot enough because the braids are unraveling at the end. I had to take out 3 braids along my edges which were super tight. The positive points are, the place is cleaner than other African hair braiding places and you can pay with a debit card. In all I regret my decision to get my hair braided here and would advise against it. read more

Several weeks later, still no resolution to this matter. The merchant failed to deliver an appropriate response or provide any assistance to what their employees did. They still have my money and threatened to sue me, of all people involved, for reaching out for a refund at the instruction of my bank. The quality of my service was very poor and very blatant which they continued to ignore. At this point, I feel as though I am being discriminated against and disrespected in ways no customer should ever be treated. This is devastating and disgusting to go through especially since this is my body and not just some random object. I am disappointed and would not recommend that anyone go to this establishment for any reason. My bank has agreed that these people are wrong and dangerous at this point. It's all so disappointing to see in the black/ African American community that is Harlem, NY but the scammers are everywhere clearly. They deserve 0 stars but Yelp doesn't allow it. As a business owner, I have no idea how the person called Dior thinks this is acceptable business practice. She's on the phone yelling at me and telling me she's not in the mood for this which is nonsense as a business owner. I was weary based on other reviews, but decided to give it a shot because the styles on their IG look really nice. Don't get me wrong, I love my braids! But the experience as a whole made me uncomfortable. When I was sat down at my appointment time, I was told that the stylist was finishing eating & would come over once she was done. Thirty minutes later, she started working on my hair. Despite us discussing that I didn't want my hair to go beyond my waist, I ended up with braids just past butt-length which is a little frustrating because I specifically said that isn't what I want & that length is less manageable for me. The salon itself was not very clean- hair on the floor & work areas, cups, and a few flies, not sanitizing/cleaning the chairs after clients. While the stylist worked on my hair, she occasionally coughed right onto my head without a mask on and I had to tell her multiple times that she was braiding too tightly. Overall, I appreciated the stylist being diligent about working on my hair (she didn't take any breaks), everything else I observed during the 8 hours that I was there means I probably won't be returning. read more

I found JBS on Instagram, set up an appointment via their online schedule system where you can pick the style and the color you want. Arrived to my appointment on time. The braider assigned to me was separating the hair, it was NOT the color I choose. When asked about the color and discussing it with another braider I was told the color was no longer available. Issue: if the color i the customer choose is not available, they shouldn't of taken it upon themselves to pick any color. Solution I should of been called and asked what other color I was ok with. Finally got the hair color situated which meant the braider had to separate the new hair, time wasted. So what was now a 9AM appointment is pushed back. The style I wanted had an estimated time of 5 hours. Seems about right as I've done this style before and it took 5 hours. But between her laughing and talking and pausing working on my hair I was actually done at 8:30PM. Issue I had another appointment scheduled for 5:30PM. During the appointment I asked if I would be done by 4:30 she said yes. If you can't work and talk at the time then you should only do what you're being paid for Finally finished and asked to negotiate on the price did seem fair to ha e to pay full price. Had to speak to the owner over the phone explained everything that happened including one stylist throwing hair to my braider and it hitting me in the eye. All she said she could do was take off the $30 deposit. The hair is fine (so far) but the service was terrible my time was wasted and I was inconvenienced. I was hoping to have find a permanent hair braiding place but I will not return and definitely do not recommend. read more

While the salon was cleaner than an average braiding shop, and cute, if you are like me, and can see room for improvement, here is what you may want to do: 1. Bring your own comb 2. Bring your own towel 3. Bring hand wipes/sanitizer for after bathroom use 4. Ask what styling gel they use and go buy your own 5. Ask your stylist to wash their hands before starting 6. Blow dry your hair very good and do not put into ponytail. Avoid any reason for having to use their blow dryer. The suggestions above are just that. If you don't do it I'm sure you'll be happy, and I have these suggestions for any shop! Not because of the salon necessarily, but because you never know who you are sitting after. I was greeted at the door and directed straight to the stylist who was ready for me. I got medium sized waist length box braids (pre washed in apple cider vinegar). Fatima was a fast braider and extremely neat. She was also very sweet. All the ladies were kind and very attentive. They came over several times to check on me and ask if I needed anything. The service was fine, but she used all the bundles, making it too long and heavy, and she didnt seal it effectively so there was a lot of shedding. I learned later that she'd accidentally cut a small piece of my own hair REALLY short when cutting pieces she'd already braided b/c she needed more hair for the boho braids. Warning, Instagram pictures are the lucky ones. My appt was moved 2 1/2 up because my stylist was late. (This would have cost the customer a no show/late fee of $50) I had to rearrange my whole schedule to accommodate. However, the stylist I booked (owner Dior) was on vacation so I had no less than 3 people work on my hair. 1. nice but the slowest braider in history 2. the person who colored my enclosure and installed (knots and glue job look crazy. 3. the person who sewed in my tracks and cut it. (Sew in is good, cutting my $280 hair not so much) After expressing my urgency (know one seems to understand the meaning) that they keep to the 2-hour booking after being more than 2 hours late and being promised that they would this is what I got. I made an appointment for stitch Grenache braids and this is what I got. When I asked why they weren't stitch braid I was told that is what I asked for. I reminded them that my confrontation email clearly says stitch braids and only then did she acknowledge the oversight. I brought my own gel but the stylist kept adding product to my hair without asking and I had to ask her to stop, she used way too much gel and globs where left in. When I mentioned that I felt the braids where in even she asked if I wanted her to re do one braid but I had other plans and could not stay. When I left my sister saw and asked why the part was also crooked, then I sent back pictures and informed them I wanted my hair re done and I was told to return at 8pm. I took my hair out and washed it. Later that evening I was asked to punch back the appointment to 8:30pm. I arrived on time and the stylist was finishing up small box braids on a customer. At 9pm she had at best another hour or more to go. I informed her I was leaving and she said she's almost done but we all know even if she finished the braids she still needed to dip them in hot water etc. l sent an email and text asking for a refund and was told all that they would do is add the cost of my hair to my next appointment which means I am stuck having to trust them to do my hair again. I did ask for a different stylist but they should just refund all my money rather than make me have to return to them. Cross your fingers if you go and definitely be specific and micromanage so you get exactly what you want read more

I got my hair done here a few months ago and loved it!! I had a scar on the back of my scalp and was worried that I wouldn't be able to make the braids work. The braider worked around it and you couldn't even tell!! I kept my braids in for about 3 1/2 weeks. Which is long for me.
