The butchers are very friendly, know their stuff and seem to like questions and recommendation requests. These chaps do trade/industry customers, but the store front is based on the busy walk up business by regular customers like you and me. You get a far shorter supply chain without the mass processing centres (and what can go along with that), and the meat sold here is handpicked by an expert butcher and cut in-store which delivers superior quality meat. They have a large selection of meats, and not all of it is on display, so ask if you don't see it. As you can imagine, cutting out several 'middle-men' also means all those saved margins are passed onto you. They also do sell small portions, if you want a skirt of beef, or two t-bone steaks, a single medium chicken, etc. But I've always bought in bulk (2-5kg), then divided it into single meal portions and then into the freezer, and suggest this for maximum savings and minimal trips to Smithfield Butchers. For example, large, good quality skinless, boneless chicken breasts here cost about the same as the basic brands of big name grocers which are small, pumped full of water and inferior quality. The 'steak meats' (e.g. rib eye, fillets, sirloin) are about half the price of big name grocers, and since you're buying a 1-4kg slab, you can cut your steak as thick as you want! Some of the best steaks I've had came from Smithfield Butchers, and the best Christmas Turkey ever! If you can make it to Smithfield Meat Market, this one is a no-brainer.

Like Hungarian sausages or smoked sirloin stake ... My favourite is the spicy Italian beef sausages ... The meet % on that one is off the charts!!!! :) they also from time to time make spicy lamb sausages ... They are insanely good as well.

Excellent butcher in Bermondsey's Maltby Street Market…read more Great selection of hi and lo cuts, there is a viewing counter in the front part of the store and in the back is where they keep a majority of the meat. Specials hang on the back wall, Jacob's ladders and ox cheek were well priced when I stopped in. I ended up getting 1.5 kilo of Jacobs ladders (aka short ribs) for about 20. The meat is really good quality and well worth the price. Service is to the point, but friendly and very accommodating. The man who was helping me kindly offered to cut my ribs down to size so that they could fit in my pan (don't get me wrong, im an awesome cook but not so great at cuts!) Try and get there earlier in the morning, as some of the more popular cuts will sell before the afternoon rush of the market area (especially on weekends!) I'm really glad I stopped in. My friends who live in the area have been raving about them and now I can definitely see why. Will be back!

While they had an impressive array of raw meats, the reason why I came was to try their selection of prepared British classics. It was mid-morning when I arrived and they were just taking their meat pies out of the oven. They all looked divine but I since I had to be at the airport in a few hours, I couldn't commit to purchasing one so instead, I bought items that I could easily shove into my backpack. I walked out with 3 scotch eggs, a pork pie and a pasty...all for the grand sum of £5! I ate one and a half scotch eggs and shared the pasty and the other half scotch egg with a friend right away. Both were amazing, better than any other version I've tried. It wasn't until I was back home in Boston that I had the last scotch egg and pork pie. The egg tasted even better than the first time and the pork pie was the best I've ever had. Service was top notch by the extremely friendly and polite butcher behind the counter. I cannot wait to come back here the next time I am in London to try the meat pie...unfinished business!.

With meat cut to order, you can get exactly what you want in the size you want - along with any advice on choosing and cooking it that you may need. Worth a special mention are the wonderful pies. I love the steak and kidney in particular, although these do tend to sell out before the end of the day. The pork pies are also superb, and the faggots absolutely delicious. There is also a range of other products including sauces, pickles and relishes.

While we have some truly spectacular butcher shops here in the Bay Area, I must say that the charm and authenticity of Hussey's is on a completely different plane. I mean, you do have to actually board a plane if you want to go there, but it's really a destination level butcher. Their sister store, just down the lane a bit, Hussey's Grocery doesn't have a review written yet - but I'll get to it. I was enthralled from the very first - there's a truly Locals Only Pub that serves Sunday Roast with all the Fixin's - one of Wayne's brothers works the bar there and rotates in to Husseys as well. There's a third brother - I don't believe I had the pleasure of making his acquaintance; most of my interaction was with Wayne. First day in - he humored me: let me take video on an actual camera of him breaking down a beautiful cut of meat for my requested Steak Tartare. His knife techniques are surgically precise and beautiful to behold! I also picked up three house made sausages: pheasant and plum, I believe - or perhaps it was pork and plum. Delicious - perfection. They practice whole animal butchery, and will graciously pause to fill a last-minute order/request or head back to the walk-ins from a primal cut. The butcher block is stunning - Wayne says they never stay 'round much because they're sanded down daily as part of their food safety practice of course, and people just queue up to purchase them. When you do pop by Hussey's, you will note that their eggs are pastured and they do not refrigerate them. You can also carry parcels from the Grocery to the Butcher shop and vice versa on the honor system, and they'll ring you up at either spot. I miss it so much!
