These chaps do trade/industry customers, but the store front is based on the busy walk up business by regular customers like you and me. You get a far shorter supply chain without the mass processing centres (and what can go along with that), and the meat sold here is handpicked by an expert butcher and cut in-store which delivers superior quality meat. They have a large selection of meats, and not all of it is on display, so ask if you don't see it. As you can imagine, cutting out several 'middle-men' also means all those saved margins are passed onto you. They also do sell small portions, if you want a skirt of beef, or two t-bone steaks, a single medium chicken, etc. But I've always bought in bulk (2-5kg), then divided it into single meal portions and then into the freezer, and suggest this for maximum savings and minimal trips to Smithfield Butchers. For example, large, good quality skinless, boneless chicken breasts here cost about the same as the basic brands of big name grocers which are small, pumped full of water and inferior quality. The 'steak meats' (e.g. rib eye, fillets, sirloin) are about half the price of big name grocers, and since you're buying a 1-4kg slab, you can cut your steak as thick as you want! Some of the best steaks I've had came from Smithfield Butchers, and the best Christmas Turkey ever! If you can make it to Smithfield Meat Market, this one is a no-brainer.

But you DO find such places, because that's exactly what it is, currently run by third-generation Chris, Mark and Vince. The meat and poultry are always great quality, the pies and sausages excellent. Prices are miniscule compared to what you'd pay up the road at Borough Market on my last shop four huge chicken supremes, a pound of steak mince, half a dozen eggs, two chunky Barnsley chops, 8 merguez and 12 big fat porky bastard sausages came in at under £20.00. Best of all, the guys are massively friendly and helpful, and not only remember your name from one visit to another but what you bought and what you cooked with it. I'd give them 5 stars if there was more organic produce on offer. To have such a great shop within walking distance is a real treat. No more overpriced sub-standard Sainsbury's rubbish for me!

FAR less expensive than Ginger Pig, seems clean, the meat is the right colour, doesn't smell, and has a friendly, knowledgable butcher. This seems like the kind of place where one could call up with a special request and, given ample time, they could find it for you (though I have yet to actually test this). Though it is a small shop (perhaps call ahead if you need something rare), it is fairly comprehensive, affordable, and a VERY welcome alternative to Tesco.
