There are stalls selling fruit and veg, luggage, clothes, kitchen stuff, knock-off perfume and make up etc, but it's all cheap, which is fine if you're on a budget or if that's your thing, but it's not exactly fancy. I'm usually disappointed whenever I pass through, and to be honest with Westfield Stratford City only a short bus ride away, you'd probably rather check that out instead.

Regardless, it is incredible- there are roughly 500 stalls selling goods from fruit and vegetables, clothing, fabric and household goods. Nearby is the local town hall- an impressive neo-classical building- and the William Morris Gallery, which houses a large collection of Pre-Raphaelite works. Unfortunately, the Walthamstow dog track closed down last summer, which apart from the market, was my other main reason for visiting the area.

They have absolutely everything that a Turksih Chef would need. My family shop here virtually everyday to get bread and other certain thing they might need for whatever is being cooked. For quantity, it is by no means competition for any large supermarket chains, but as for quality, it definitely is. It is a regular for me.

The cooked range is price friendly and includes roast beef, steak , steak and kidney pies and several hams, gala pies and scotch eggs. The raw meat selection easily surpasses the supermarkets and often includes game (when in season) eggs and condiments. The service is friendly and the butchers are knowledgable about their craft. Hygiene is first rate and I have never gone in the shop and been overwhelmed by the smell of slightly off meat. I defy anyone to buy from this amazing shop and become vegetarian - spoken as a reformed vegetarian.

The thing about gourmet butchers is they just don't smell like regular butchers. You know, that over-awing smell that, when hungover, you can't even walk past such a butcher without runniing for the nearest bin. James Elliott smells great (for a butcher!), and has such an impressive selection of free-range and organic meats, all beautifully presented. Staff are so helpful, always happy to help you with cooking times, suggested sides to complement a particular cut of meat, etc. Yes, butchers of this calibre are more expensive than cheaper butchers, but really only buy a couple of quid, which I think is well worth it. No argument at all.

The staff reflect the ethnic diversity of the area and there is little staff turnover which always indicates the business has a genuine positive ethos and that it is a good and fair employer. It's a busy shop and yet you don't have to wait long. Whatever, its always worth it. If you need advice with how to cook the meat they are always willing to help. If you believe in supporting local business with a low carbon footprint then support this local butcher.
