They have award-winning sausages made on site, and also cure their own bacon, and make up their own beef burgers. There's a variety of stuffed or marinated meat, good for the bbq in the summer or for roasting in the winter. They make sausage rolls and pasties, and it's pretty hard to resist when you walk by and smell that baking! They were happy to give me bones for a dog for no charge. Anything you want, they'll get in for you. There's a small selection of produce and chutneys, and some meat bagged up for the freezer. Oh, and there's cheese and ham, too. I may just start sleeping on the floor. And if you go in and say what you're making, they'll give you the right cut of meat and the right size, and then tell you how long to cook it. I think one of these days, they'll just follow me home and cook it up for me. The downside? It's expensive. But you're paying for quality and expertise, which you just don't get at a supermarket. They're open seven days a week, too.

Definitely a carnivores paradise, and best to arrive as early as you can, the market gets going at 4am and closes at 10am. You need a strong stomach to cope with the pigs heads and carcasses strewn across the huge market, with up to 160 stalls, there's a lot of meat here! There are also plenty of café's nearby if you're after a hearty breakfast after your early start. The building is reason enough in itself to come and have a look at the market, a huge, Victorian grade II listed building. It has recently undergone a £70 million refurbishment inside but the outer building has mostly been left alone, so it hasn't lost its original charm.

All the action starts VERY early in the morning, around 4am, on weekdays however lorries start arriving at 10pm and some stalls are still open at around 7/8am. They mainly serve caterers, wholesalers, local restaurants in London however they do sell to the public so if you are able to visit early during the week to stock up on your meat shop for the week I can imagine it is an amazing experience. If you are only in the area during reasonable hours, well I would still recommend a wander round the old Victorian buildings that house the market - they really are beautiful! And the modern 60's poultry market is apparently an architects paradise with a one a kind concrete shell roof. I recently visited on one of the monthly tours which take place on a Wednesday morning starting at 6.45. The tour guide is passionate and full of knowledge on the history of the industry, buildings etc. You get to wander round a very quiet market as nearly everything is done for the day however there are some very friendly butchers still around that will regale you with stories from days gone by, show off their goods and sell you some their meat for a reasonable price! If in the area try and visit in any way you can! It certainly is an experience.

And I think the Ginger Pig is worth every extra pence it costs in both flavour and happy cow/pig/duck karma-points (plus supporting a really special local business). Specials hang on the back wall, Jacob's ladders and ox cheek were well priced when I stopped in. I ended up getting 1.5 kilo of Jacobs ladders (aka short ribs) for about 20. The meat is really good quality and well worth the price. Service is to the point, but friendly and very accommodating. The man who was helping me kindly offered to cut my ribs down to size so that they could fit in my pan (don't get me wrong, im an awesome cook but not so great at cuts!) Try and get there earlier in the morning, as some of the more popular cuts will sell before the afternoon rush of the market area (especially on weekends!) I'm really glad I stopped in. My friends who live in the area have been raving about them and now I can definitely see why. Will be back!

The cooked range is price friendly and includes roast beef, steak , steak and kidney pies and several hams, gala pies and scotch eggs. The raw meat selection easily surpasses the supermarkets and often includes game (when in season) eggs and condiments. The service is friendly and the butchers are knowledgable about their craft. Hygiene is first rate and I have never gone in the shop and been overwhelmed by the smell of slightly off meat. I defy anyone to buy from this amazing shop and become vegetarian - spoken as a reformed vegetarian.

They're incredibly well stocked and knowledgable with produce from all corners of the world. They're not poncey or crazily overpriced (I'm talking about you Meat N16). They're welcoming and encouraging and they've inspired me to try cooking all sorts of bigger cuts of meat as well as answering all my novice questions. We've made rabbit ragu with meat from Baldwins as well as squab pigeon with cherry sauce, herb crusted lamb, Sunday beef joints, lamb shoulder rogan josh, duck liver pate, turkey mole (with a whole jointed turkey which served an entire Mexican Christmas party) and baby back ribs to serve 7. We had to buy an especially big pan for those. They also sell cheap organic free range eggs, award winning manchego cheese, loads of delicious looking Parma hams and chorizo as well as good store cupboard essentials (the tomato purée in the red tin with the swan on is lovely) and special treats like panettone. Thanks Baldwins! It's been an education and a joy.
