Well if you have a Honda/Acura then try out Hondeville. The sole proprietor and mechanic is a guy named John. I brought in my rare Honda (1988 4wd Civic Wagon) and he was able to work with me and help to source out some parts over 3 weeks. He very patient , kept me updated regularly and also had very good suggestions to other fixes while my car was being fixed. Mechanics and auto shops are plentiful, but ones that don't overcharge and suggest that you replace everything, is not. John is nice guy, with a clean shop. I have brought my Acura TSX there several times, and will only replace or service areas that actually need to be fixed! I have referred 4 friends there now and they too, seem to be satisfied. The only downside is that John works alone, and is only open M-F, until 4:30ish. It does make it a bit challenging for those who work during the day. You really can't go wrong with their $20 oil change though! read more

I have been doing most of my honda's schedule maintenance in Anderson Honda. Anderson Honda's service department is OK with OK pricing for dealer so no complaint there. Since I moved north, I have to look for another place and I found Hondeville with quite a few great reviews so I want to give it a try. Over the phone, John is very talkative and friendly. He gives me a price quote over the phone and it's just a bit under Anderson's price. I figure since he has a great review here and so price is also accordingly higher. Also, since hondeville specially work with honda cars, I figure price may be worth it. However, over the phone, he tries to sell me his special. My service minder only asks for a few work but he seems to ignore the service minder's code and tries to sell me the special on major service which I declined. Once I am there, the price is $20 higher. Now that isn't far from Anderson's price. Since I am already there, I still decide to let him do the work. He still tries to sell me the special with major service which I declined again. He keeps on telling me that the major service special is a great deal and he normally do major service for his customer at my honda's mileage. I tell him that I do not want to do additional work that isn't on my service minder since that's going to mess up the service minder schedule for the warranty card and, finally, he quits trying. I usually buy Penz Synthetic oil and filter on my own and give it to whoever changes my car's oil. I do that when I due for an oil change at Anderson Honda, another car repair shop and gas stations. Non give me any problem. However, John says that he wouldn't do.... He gave me some reason which I don't buy: saying that it becomes a liability for him if there is a problem??? Huh? A first to me. The oil isn't a home cooked oil or anything. It's sealed store bought Penz Platinum synthetic with correct weight for my car. The filter is genuine honda part! He says I have to find someone else to do this. I told him even dealer do the oil change for me and he reluctantly says he will do this one and only time for me. After it's all done in 2 hours, he calls and I come back to pickup the car. He show me the dirty air filter that I had (good). In the car, he puts in a paper air re freshener. A few weeks after, when I clean my glove compartment, I find a part in it and a hole on my right side of glove compartment. It seems to be a part holding up right side of glove compartment. The glove compartment seems to work without it but.. what the heck!? Looks like his worker forgot to put it back.... So for a almost dealer like service with almost dealer like price and not so great workmanship. I actually miss Anderson Honda's service.... strange and I can't believe that I am saying this. Oh, by the way, I didn't and wouldn't buy a car from Anderson Honda... Their service department seems to be OK though.... much better than Redwood Honda. read more

John is amazing. I came by his shop this morning for an issue with my '07 Civic. It was making a really bad knocking/grinding sound after going over any bumps/dips in the road. After a quick drive around the block wit him in the car to reproduce the noise, we drove back to the shop where he lifted up my car to take a look at things. Turns out the last person that did my breaks didn't tighten the bolts good enough on one of the brake pads, and one of them had come loose and fallen off. John searched around his shop, found a spare bolt (which are actually not easy to come by), and fixed everything. He said I was all set and that there was no charge. I couldn't believe it. Came in with a leaking problem on my car (it was not a honda) but John was still willing to help me with my problem. Another mechanic messed up something in mar car that was making it leak oil. went there in the morning and he was so nice. Him and his son worked on it right away and bolted down the loose bolts (they were causing the leakage.) When i was ready to pay him, he didn't even charge me for it. =) He also noticed that i needed and oil change and i told him that the previous shop i went to said that would touch the car if it was leaking oil. John was nice enough to order the filter for my Saab and replace it him self. Im definitely come back for further oil changes... =) read more

I've known the owner, John for more than a decade. He used to take care of my very first car, a '93 Honda Civic, until the day I sold it. I don't trust anybody else but him to fix my car. John is a friendly, honest and straightforward mechanic. He and his team gave my Honda the cheapest and fastest oil change it's ever had -- it was almost done by the time I was signing the work order. What's more, I asked him about a dent I had inflicted on my fender, and he offered to take it to the body shop for an estimate while I left it there overnight. The next morning he called me with the price (which was very reasonable), and when I agreed, he took care of the rest. As most of us know, it's really difficult to find a mechanic that trust with your car, your wallet, and your sanity. John really treats the customers out of their shop the way it seems they would want to be treated (i.e., they don't treat their customers like idiots). Really fair prices, and honest work. I've taken my '99 Accord here twice for 30k scheduled maintenance. At $300, it's about $100 cheaper than any printed "deals" at Redwood City Honda or Anderson Honda. I had my brakes replaced at Anderson Honda in December and they told me my steering fluid was dirty and needed to be replaced, among many other non-essential fixes. When I came back to Hondeville a week ago for the 30k service, he said the steering fluid was absolutely fine. I should have stuck with this really great mechanic all along. read more

Took my Acura in to check on a CEL, and even though the light turned off on its own on the drive up, John took a look anyway and found the problem. He was able to fix the problem that same day. Another review for me that is long overdue. Hondeville is a small family owned business. I've been coming here for almost a decade now, so you know these guys are doing a great job. They have serviced 4 ( 3 Honda's and One Subaru )of my vehicles over the years and continue to do so now. They are honest in their assessment for maintenance, have much more reasonable rates than the dealership, they don't try to sell you on unnecessary materials or labor, and they are accommodating when scheduling service. Jon and Gabe take the time to explain what needs to be done and address concerns in an effort to prolong the life of your vehicle. The guys there are genuine car enthusiasts and have a passion for working on / modifying vehicles (if that's your thing) which is obviously a big positive. I have worked on my own cars in the past but do to a hectic schedule with work and family, that is no longer possible. I took my 1996 Honda Accord to John because my check engine light came on and the car stalled and ran rough. I've been taking this car to John since 1999. He's done multiple repairs on it. Brakes, rotors, camshaft sensor, water pump, timing belt, tune up, suspension work. He's a always been fair, and has done good work. This time I scanned the car and came up with a bad camshaft sensor or crankshaft sensor. He diagnosed it and came up with the same thing , prior to that he had replaced both those items 40,000 miles ago and here they went out again. Ok I can live with that. So he installs the sensors and the car is still running rough, he calls me and says I don't know what's wrong with it and it's giving him headaches. Ok, so your asking me if I know what the problem is, I'm paying you $160.00 an hour and that's what you say. Then he says it might be the distributor cap and it could take 5 days to get the part, really. I could have gotten the part overnight at rock auto. Now he's had the car close to two weeks, I called him one time in two weeks to see what was going on with the repair, cars not my daily driver, I wanted repaired so my son could use it to commute in. He charged $1,800 for the repairs. Then his son tells him I can't believe you can't figure it out since you've been a Honda mechanic for years, and he used to work at a Honda dealership as a mechanic. I finally come and pick the car up and it doesn't start very well, prior to him getting it, it started fine, the next day it won't start so I call him and ask if theirs anything you might have done to create this, he says no it might be dirty battery terminals. Ok, I had a hunch it was the starter because I had full power everywhere, so I get my little crowbar bang on the solenoid and it starts right up. The minute I started at his shop I knew something was wrong, you mean to tell me he didn't recognize the sound of the starter being a Honda mechanic. I ordered a AC Delco starter from rock auto and it installed myself because I didn't want to get hosed by John for probably $700.00 he knows everybody in the Bay Area makes decent money and has no time to have their car down. He also tells me when I walk into the shop that this newer Acura is giving him a headache, when your charging a customer a $160.00 an hour that's the last thing you should say. If these vehicles are giving you headaches maybe you should Change your profession. Long story short, I would never recommend this shop to anyone again, very disappointed. Plus I don't know where he gets his parts from, but I can tell you their low quality. And he never shows you your old parts that he has replaced. read more

I initially, brought my car for a rotor change Feb. 2015. After 1 year my steering wheel began to shake. April 2016 I brought my car back for an assessment. John told me my rotors needed to be sanded or completely changed again. I did some research as I am not car mechanic savvy. Basic rotors need changing every 15 - 70k miles. My work is 3 miles away and I do local driving, about 3.5k miles a year. I took my car to another trusted auto shop. They told me Hondeville put weak/cheap rotors and aggressive break pads on my car. When I first brought my car into Johns/Hondaville shop, he never explained or gave me a choice of rotors. I am firm that the integrity and trust is questionable at Hondeville. Make sure you know your information, options and ask a lot of questions if you dare to put your car in their hands. Very shady auto dealership. Beware. read more

It's hard to find a mechanic that doesn't seem like they're trying to sell you on services for your car or will judge you for poor maintenance and I had tried a few in the area already. My car is already up there in mileage (150k+) and I had not been taking care of it as well as I should have. I usually go to them for oil changes and since my car is older, the check engine light goes off every now and then. John and Gabe were both super understanding and honest with what I needed to get done on my car before a long road trip and they've always been affordable. Hondeville is one of the most friendliest shops around, and also has the best prices out there... i own a 93 honda accord and an 09 toyota corolla S, which are both always serviced at HONDEVILLE by john and his crew. They always do a fantastic and clean job on my car and i have never been disappointed with anything. John always keeps the shop nice and clean, he also makes sure that my car stays in tip-top shape.... John is one of those guys who wont BS you and try to rip you off... he always looks out for his customers and helps them out with what they need.
