I had an extremely disappointing experience at Hondeville and would not recommend this shop. On Wednesday, April 29, I went in person to schedule service for Friday at 8am. Since the main person in the office would not be there on Friday, the price and service details were supposed to be set up ahead of time. I was quoted $799 for an oil change, coolant service, spark plugs, and serpentine belt for my Honda's A14 & 5 service. The quote was clearly discussed, and he repeated "just so we're on the same page" multiple times while confirming the price. I was also told my information would be written down so everything would be ready for Friday. However, when I arrived Friday morning, nothing seemed prepared. They had to ask again for my name, phone number, email, and address, and they rewrote the invoice. That morning, I asked to add a transmission service because the last time it was done was around 37k miles. The updated invoice was written for $991, and based on the conversation, I understood that the transmission service was included in that updated price. When I returned around 2:10pm to pick up my car, the interaction became extremely uncomfortable. I was trying to get clarification on the price and services performed, but the employee working with me, who I understand is the owner's son, became aggressive, raised his voice, put his hands up repeatedly, and spoke to me in a disrespectful way. During the interaction, he was also on the phone with the shop owner, so the owner was aware of how the situation was being handled. As a young woman, being yelled at and spoken to aggressively in that setting made me feel especially uncomfortable and intimidated. I asked him multiple times to stop being aggressive toward me, but the behavior continued. I stepped away to call my mom because I felt uncomfortable, and he continued yelling from a distance asking if I was going to pay. My mom could hear him raising his voice over the phone. I eventually had my mom and stepdad come to the shop because I felt intimidated and just wanted help resolving the situation. During the discussion, I was told the transmission service had not been done, even though I believed it had been added when the invoice changed to $991. Both the employee and the shop owner denied that I had asked to add the transmission service, even though that was the reason I believed the price had increased. There was also confusion about the original $799 quote, with the shop owner denying over the phone that a price had been given on Wednesday. I would not have agreed to leave my car for service without knowing the price first. Throughout the entire situation, I stayed calm and was only trying to understand why the charges were different from what had been discussed. The employee attempted to explain the charges, but the explanation did not match the agreement from Wednesday or what I understood had been added Friday morning. Once they said the transmission service was not done, I told him I would pay the original price his father quoted me on Wednesday, but he did not want to honor that at first. My mom also tried to calm the situation down, but he continued getting heated instead of helping resolve the issue professionally. This uncomfortable conversation went on for about 20 minutes before they finally agreed to honor the original quoted price. The lack of organization, unclear communication, price confusion, and aggressive customer service made this one of the worst experiences I've had with a business. I originally chose this shop because it had good reviews online and because I have had positive experiences with Pablo's Auto Body on the other side of the building. Unfortunately, my experience with Hondeville was completely different. Maybe other customers will have a better experience, but based on what happened to me, I will not return or recommend this shop. read more

They are extremely fair and transparent with their pricing and are clear about what work needs to be done. It has been 10 years of continued great efficient service from Hondaville with the same car. I have had many more intermediate services and oil changes here. I also had them tint my windows in 2019 and I proceeded to put a window decal over the rear window after it was tinted to promote some charity work I do. Then I removed the decal in 2025 since it was peeling but it left an outline/UV "stain" on the tint so I wanted Hondaville to retint the rear window completely. They quoted me a price assuming it would take them 1 hour but they said it ended up being a difficult job and took 3 hours to remove and reapply the tint adhesive but they didn't charge me more. That is to say I feel I get great value and charge me fair prices for all the work. Will continue to come back for my Honda Civic. Oh and they can work on certain other cars that aren't Hondas. I brought in our 2006 Lexus GS300 for an intermediate service and no problem. read more

Do not be fooled by the overwhelmingly positive reviews here. I recently took my car here and it started out positive. The owner's son was polite and kind on the phone, but the owner was very rude when I brought my car in. I let it go thinking this might have been just an off day, but after the work on my car was done, I noticed a loud rattling noise when the wheel was being turned. I pointed it out right away and the mechanic tried to claim that this sound was coming from a different side of the car then what was worked on. I was simply asking for him to take a look at what was wrong, and he was very aggressive about making sure he wasn't to blame, something I did not accuse him of. I asked him to take a look because I was afraid of something going wrong with the engine. His reply was that I wouldn't have my car for long anyway. Another tangent that had nothing to do with the issue. There were many more of these arguments from him. He also said that my car model always makes that noise and that it was normal. I left feeling very upset about the exchange, and I asked my family to listen to see if it was normal. We all agreed the loud noise was strange. I called the shop and was told to bring it the next day so they could have a look. As soon as I brought it in I was verbally attacked by both the owner and his son. They were both so angry they wouldn't even let me speak, they laid into me as though I was here to fight them. I paid almost $1,000 for their work. The two of them made it out to be my fault and that there was no noise. They wouldn't even spare a second to just check if there was an issue, choosing instead to yell at me. I don't want to think that gender played a role here, but I cannot imagine they would have spoken to another man like this. I took a picture of the mechanic's license in case I needed to protect myself, and that also set them off. They made threats about making me pay for lawyer fees in court, and all I had wanted was for them to help me figure out what was making the rattling noise in my car. I'm not someone that expects anyone working any job to roll out a red carpet or even smile if they don't want to, but there is a level of professionalism that I feel anyone working a job interacting with others should have. This wasn't just a lack of professionalism, this was a level of rudeness and meanness that people should reserve for an enemy. I took my car to another mechanic, and we figured out that my license plate was bent in such a way that it rattled. A simple and small thing. At first, that other mechanic also didn't hear the problem, but the difference was they took the time to listen to what I was saying and to investigate before coming to a conclusion. So please do not come here if you're not prepared to deal with angry men who will fight you instead of help you, and do not know how to treat their customers. read more

It should also be mentioned that I called several places in San Mateo County before landing on Hondeville to assist me with replacing my alternator. Although it helps that Hondeville offered the most affordable pricing and could repair the car the soonest, I will be going back to get any future repairs done here because John was kind and took the time to explain repairs and pricing to me in a thoughtful way. He's definitely a vehicle repair person I feel I can trust. I had the good luck to find them in 2015 and they did excellent work replacing my engine mounts on my 2004 Accord V6. There were repairs over the years where they let me know when something was under warranty. They were very flexible about letting me drop my car off early when I needed to work. I've been meaning to write this review for a long time now. During my last maintenance with Hondeville before driving down to Texas. John & Gabe performed a very thorough repair & maintenance on my car. Upon driving in the lot for my scheduled maintenance, Gabe immediately notice an issue with the sound of my car. They initially thought that it was the issue with the alternator. However, it turned out that it was a combination of issues and the alternator, water pump and additional stuff needed fixing in order to drive my car safely down to Texas. Because additional unexpected issues kept coming up. John the owner was nice enough to offer to charge me just for parts and not labor. There really isn't a case of better customer service than this. I really appreciate them for prioritizing their customers safety and also appreciate the fact that they are most considerate when it comes to keeping you informed when they notice unexpected issues. If you value honesty, transparency and exceptional customer service all without breaking the bank. This is the place to take your car. Updating my review to further confirm these guys are awesome! Especially John! I came in because my steering wheel was making the loudest noises when i would turn. I suspected it was due to low fluid and that was what John ended up confirming. He didn't end up charging me anything even though the price for that is ~$15+ time for labor for checking/diagnosing my car. He even cleaned up the scrapes on the side of my car without me asking and free of charge! Am I in the twilight zone? Are there really such nice and generous mechanics?!! I took my used 2005 Honda Pilot in as I've had some knocking in the suspension for quite some time now. Gabe and John individually took my car for a test drive and immediately performed a diagnosis afterward. There were quite a few issues with the Pilot especially due to the excessive rust under the vehicle. John called and kept me updated throughout the entire process of repairing my car. Called in on Friday at 11:45AM to check for availability, Gabe asked what's the situation and had an opening for me at 12:30PM. My old CRV had engine light on, needed oil change, and also had problems starting up sometimes. Everything was checked/done, but he only charged me for the oil change, because he explained that the engine light was on but there nothing wrong, so he only had to reset it. He checked the battery which was what I suspected to be the problem to start the car, but it was new and nothing was wrong, so no fault as well. He then told me that base on his experience, 01-05 CRVs tends to have starters to act up and cause the malfunction to start the vehicle, not the spark plug or batteries. And gave me an estimate of how much it would cost to replace the starter if it dies. I give 5 stars for the fast and honest service. read more

It's been a long time since I had my Honda serviced and this report is long overdue. I bought a used Honda Civic Hybrid and had some problems with it after a month. I used to go to HondaNation but after they closed had to find somewhere just as good and just as close. Of course I turned to Yelp and found Hondeville. The technician was super friendly, honest, and ran a complete diagnostic test on my car to not only find the problem, but also to troubleshoot other problems. My car was done in a day and I've put 8,000+ miles on it since. I'm hoping it doesn't break down again, but if it does I'll definitely take it back to Hondeville. read more

Hondeville (pronounced HONDA-ville, they specialize in Honda/Acura) shares a driveway with San Mateo Auto Works. After entering the driveway, drive past the garage with like 3 lifts and park in front of the garage with 1. This is John's. John is great. John is fast, John is a friendly guy, and John has the lowest prices around. When the CV boot on my Acura tore I called/visited about 8 different shops. I had estimates from $200-400 and when I got a $195 estimate I was ready to drop off the car. But then John told me he'd do it for $140. $140!!!! John has a loaner car so you never have to go without a vehicle. The loaner is an older Nissan van. It's a fun experience to have a ginormous car but I don't think I'd ever buy one for myself. He doesn't BS you and he offers different solutions to the same problem. Most recently, I asked him to get the leaves out of my AC blower (along with doing other stuff to my car). He told me that to remove the leaves he would need to remove the entire system, which he could do, or I could just turn up my blower and let the system disintegrate the leaves. He's not out to rip you off. read more

Tired of being nickeled and dimed by name brand auto service shops when you just want to do standard oil change or replace small parts such as battery? To some stores, turning in your car for oil change is a big opp for them to find faults with your car and tell you to let them do this or that for hundreds of dollars. Even for simple problems like a dead battery, I was quoted by some stores that I have to pay for an electrical system check (to make sure it's a dead battery), the cost of a new battery, installation fee, and disposal fee. There's plenty of auto sharks around here! So last year I spent some time online to look for a simple and honest place, that has not been discovered by yelpers yet. Hondaville is near my home within walking distance. So I can easily go away and do something else if my car needs to be left alone for longer. I called to make an appointment first. When I went there, it is located at the end of a wide driveway that serves a few other independent auto shops. John is a no-nonsense but friendly guy. He did the oil change, checked all fluid levels, checked tire pressure -- all in 10 minutes or less and for under $20. His shop is small but tidy, and the floor is NOT littered with screws & nuts, or repair junks like other places I went to. He told me he is trained and certified to service Hondas, but he can do any other cars, including my Toyota. Previously his shop was in Daly City. A few years ago he moved to San Mateo. Strangely I already felt he is like an old friend. So when my battery went dead recently, I called John only after talking to what turned out to be auto sharks on the phone. He said he can replace the battery for me, or I can bring a new battery for him to install, AT NO CHARGE. So I jump-started my car, went to Krager nearby to get a new battery, and went to Hondaville. John was waiting for me. He first checked my battery's charging condition and told me that the battery was really dead and the car charging system was fine. He replaced the battery in 5 minutes. He even helped me to put the dead battery in the trunk since I had to bring it to Krager for a credit. I asked him how much I owed him. He said NOTHING. This is the kind of one-man auto shop everybody would love! It is heartwarming that John treats his customers like friends instead of a big dollar sign. I have no experience to speak of his repair jobs. That may be other yelpers' opp in the future. read more

I happened to be lucky enough to roll in to the place when John, (the owner?), wasn't busy with something else. I only needed a front headlight bulb changed and he jumped right on it. I like that! Also luckily he had a bulb in stock for me. So I was in and out of there in under 15 mins. He charged me next to nothing. And I feel like I met a friend. I definitely recommend him. read more
