A stellar ambassador and incredible asset to the Homeward Bound organization. Having read previous reviews of the treatment center it's apparent that the opinions are somewhat polarized. I should make readers aware that the scathing and brutally misguided opinions preceding this review are dated in excess of 8 years ago. Perhaps the organization experienced a massive paradigm shift those many years ago. That, however, seems dubious. If that was the case - indeed almost a decade ago, this reviewer advises the reader to consider phoning or visiting the facility and pose any questions or concerns to the reception or clinical staff. I think this would serve as a fine barometer. These are life and death matters. With the humble resources at the disposal of any enterprise willing to take head-on the cunning and deadly disease known colloquially as "substance use disorder" deserves at the very least a fair and unbiased inquiry. This isn't the $50,000 per month recovery experience featured on Dr. Phil (I've been there and it is terrific). Those in desperate need for an immediate medical and/or psychological inpatient solution to addiction crisis, you will find an effective solution with a competent and empathetic staff. This place is so bogus that they turned me away for treatment and I very VERY desperately need it. They turned me away because I "take too high a mg of gabapentin" and I only take 2,700 mg a day. The nurse messed up and had mentioned to me that their limit is 3,600 mg a day. Like come on dude, I'm 6'3" and weigh 140 pounds... I very obviously need help. It's disgusting how I was treated and talked to by staff after I was "medically denied" and the staff knew that I wouldn't be accepted into their trash program. So yeah, do not recommend anybody try to go here if the suffering from neuropathy and take meds for it. read more

My experience has been nothing but amazing. Homeward Bound help me get my life back. Crystal meth led to a dark place and I'm proud to say that from day 1, I had to first want to change and admit to myself that I was powerless when it came to my addiction. Well I went to Homeward Bound in the late '90s I believe it was 1998 and I think I went twice neither were successful for me but since then I've had 20 years of relief from cocaine and heroin addiction . The last time I was there I kept hearing when they opened my door somebody down the hall screaming and I thought God that poor guy must be dying . Finally I realized the guy screaming was me . Heroin withdrawals are terrible they did give you some non-narcotic meds I don't remember if they gave me clonidine but I'm sure of a benzo I was out of it but I was still feeling the pain in the leg cramps . I don't remember the first visit but that last one I remember staying a few days and getting over the worse of the withdrawal and leg cramps throwing up diarrhea Etc I don't remember much but then I left, I just wasn't ready. I don't really remember the food I remember they would beg me or make me come down to the cafeteria and eat and I just didn't feel like doing anything I was sick . I would go down there and try to eat something and then I'd want to go back up but I have to wait for everybody to smoke and I just felt so bad . The first few times you go into full withdrawal from heroin is very very intense, after that it gets a little more manageable but those were my first couple of times and it was a living nightmare. I went to crisis for schizoeffective bipolar 1. I was quite defeated by my illness and Homeward Bound saved the day. The food was average, but the groups, counselors and peer recovery specialists were simply amazing. Highly recommend. read more

Its not "passages of Malibu" but its free and they will feed you, three hots and a cot and they will make you "comfortable" while you detox. It isn't very clean, and the food is a kin to prison slop, but its free. And free is Alright with me. read more

This place is a dump. I got food poisoning twice from tainted meat from their kitchen. Aside from that, the medical staff doesn't provide certain medications that most patients take for certain conditions. So they end up experimenting on patients taking huge risks just to keep medication costs down. Place needs to be shut down. read more

First off let me say that I have been to many detox facilities across the country. I have been to Homeward Bound times and tomorrow will make the 4th. I saw a lot of shitty reviews on this site and wanted to set the record straight. The reason I'm going back there tomorrow is because I don't have insurance. If I did I wouldn't go there. What people need to realize is that Texas doesn't have treatment on demand. In fact our state sucks when it comes to drug treatment and I'm pretty sure it's near the bottom when compared to other states. Homeward bound takes the people who don't have money or insurance and that's who it's for. If you expect Passages Malibu it's gonna be very disappointing. Does the food suck? Yes it does but at least they feed you and I've never heard of anyone getting food poisoning from it. Most likely the person that claimed that was having stomach issues due to withdrawals imo.. I've always found the staff nice except on one occasion when they were too noisy but that changed and last time it was all good. The staff changes often because they can't afford to pay well. Working with detoxing addicts has to be very hard because lets face it. When we're detoxing we don't act right, lol. Far from it, we're rude and complain way too much, we want more meds every 30 minutes and nothing is ever enough. Look, if you are tired of using and want to get help for your addiction with no insurance, I challenge you to find anything better. I owe them my life as do many others. People complaining about this place need to show me where you can get better without insurance or cash, lol. It doesn't exist!! read more

I had a great experience at homeward bound. The environment was structured yet very nurturing. Those of us lost in the hell of addiction need a safe place to fall apart not judgement and criticism. ZERO STARS..This place was like a nightmare out of a movie. It was considerably worse then Denton County Jail. Ive never in my live seen such horrifying living conditions. It was smelly, dirty and really UN-humane. I would never wish on my worst enemy ...or even my dog. I really don't understand why the State of Texas hasn't shut this place down. And why hospitals would be sending there patience's there. Only if you like to be over medicated and are truly homeless then I would say its for you! If anyone of the caseworkers saw the living conditions im sure they would no longer send anyone here. The State of Texas really needs to send someone out there and make sure the "RNs" are real nurses.. I don't know how this place hasn't been shut down already.This place was like a LIVING HELL. I would SERIOUSLY advise anyone to read the paperwork closely before going here because it was that bad.(if you can read the paperwork because it was copied so many times..) When I was there the "RN" said stay in the gate or you will get robbed.. and I truly believed them it im surprised someone didn't seal my car. It was unreal. This facility is a joke. First, they picked my brother up from the Emergency Room and carried him to this facility when he wanted treatment from another specific facility. Before the family could gather to speak to the staff about not removing him and placing him into this facility, they ran off with him out of the Emergency Room. Now when the family calls to ask his status the facility refuses to at least inform us if he is still a resident at the facility. They do not provide any way for the family to contact him while in this place. He has had many visits to this facility in the past and every time he walks out of there feeling worse, overly medicated, and never receives any type of counseling. Apparently this place only cares about reaching their quota's and disregards the importance of family awareness during the process. If you do not have family and need a place to go and do not care if you are medicated throughout the process and released without arranged rides then this is the place for you. If you are a family member, or an individual, seeking appropriate assistance this is not the place for you. read more

I don't know about other people and their experiences. I just know that Homeward Bound was the only place that didn't charge anything to help my loved one. He was homeless and desperately hooked on opiates..I suspect he was close to death. No place is perfect, but they reached out to him and gave him hope when no one else would. He is now sober, hopeful, and working. Through Homeward Bound, he was able to make it through detox and residential. When he needed extra care, he got it. This facility operates entirely on donations and funding. I guess it would be ok to complain about them if people were having to pay thousands of dollars for the best accommodations, but when you are getting help from a place that is helping hundreds of people a month for free...I feel like we should be a part of the solution and not criticize people who are working desperately to help people lost in the world of drugs and alcohol. My story is one of gratefulness. We couldn't afford to pay for treatment, and Homeward Bound took our family member in. Another thing I appreciate about HB is that they allowed another family member to work there when no one else would give them a chance. They are known for giving people a second chance. They rely heavily on volunteers to do cleaning, cafeteria work, and chores like keeping the grounds clean. That's because they don't have the funding to pay for these things. It's not the Hilton...but it's not filthy nor disgusting. It is a way home for many and they do so much for people who have no place to turn. If I could would give it a zero star. Worse place to work there was constantly a lot of changes Mangers do not care about their staff. Upper management can care less and if planning on having kids DO NOT WORK THERE they will screw you over either when they find out you are pregnant or afterwards. There is no support at all from no one. Company does not train their staff for the job hired for and when you ask for training they refuse. They hire you for one position and without any warning they put you in another position without training. They do not care if you are not qualified or not. They have employess with only an associate degree in a role of a LPC and LCDC. If you get fired you will not get unemployment benefits and will not get your last paycheck. The pay sucks not worth it can go work somewhere else and make more money. The building is run down there are lots of holes i and brown spots in the ceilings. The place is absolutely disgusting. Some upper management dress like they work at a strip club or belong on the street corner. Clients are put at risk everyday as safety is not number one at all. All the company cares about is the money, you will be overworked, stress out and underpaid. Company is totally out of compliance at both the state and federal level and they are aware of this but dont care. I wouldn't recommend anyone with a drug problem to seek treatment there because they will also get you hooked on prescription drugs. read more
