On Sunday's, I'm always looking for a real meal, like momma used to cook. Since momma's not here, I venture out from time to time. This week it was Homestyle Restaurant. This restaurant is on the heavily traveled 22nd ave and easily accesible. Homestyle is strictly carry-out, which is apparent as there are no tables, just chairs and a bench in the waiting area. Be sure to bring cash as debit/credit cards are not accepted. As the food goes, obviously my momma wasn't in the kitchen, but someone with skills certainly was. I ordered the oxtails dinner. These oxtails were sliced thin, but cooked to perfection. They were tender and fell from the bone. Its accompanying gravy was spread across the pigeon peas and rice, which made for a really good and hearty taste. My two additional sides were Mac & Cheese and collard greens. The Mac & Cheese was the best, I've ever tasted from any local restaurant. Seems like most folks skimp on the real cheese, but not Homestyle. Instead they splurged with the cheese and the seasonings. Bravo!! Now the collard greens...............that's another story. Kudos for cooking what appeared to be fresh collards, as opposed to canned greens. Unfortunately they were a little "tough", if you know what I mean. Just like the other food, the greens were nicely seasoned though, and one (if adequately hungry) could overlook the texture. They also provided a nice cornbread muffin with the meal. After all, NO ONE I know would dare eat collards without cornbread. This meal was a total of $8.95 plus tax, a fair price. If you aren't a huge eater, you could very well have left overs for the following day. Don't forget to make room for the assortment of available cake slices for sale. Will I return? Most defnitely.

Service is warm, efficient, and welcoming, which somehow makes the food taste even better. It feels like a neighborhood spot even though people from all over Miami seek it out. The shrimp and grits were initially served a little warm so I asked for them to be warmed up. They came back piping hot, which I appreciated. The side of sweet potatoes was yummy and I didn't even need to use the sauce that was served along with it. The Philly with fries was a large portion and the fries were delicious. There is a parking lot in the back but looks limited.

Such a fun night out spot. Food wise, the oxtail mac and cheese was INSANE. Easily my favorite thing we ordered. The fried chicken was also so good and I honestly wish we ordered more. Cornbread was another favorite. I'm not really a collard greens person so they weren't for me, but everyone else loved them. The dessert had a little too much going on for my taste, but our waiter did warn us beforehand lol. Service was amazing. Our waiter was super attentive, gave honest recommendations, and made the experience even better. Definitely a spot I'll keep coming back to.

The music was great, putting the audience in a good mood, ready for an eventful Friday night. I was hoping to enjoy a meal, but I was highly disappointed. Let's get into the details: Apps: Oysters- I wasn't a huge fan of the Coco Passion mignonette; it had a subtle flavor and missed the brininess of the oyster. The house-made hot sauce definitely made it more flavorful, adding spice and acid. Also, why weren't they chilling on ice? Rating 3/5. Conch Fritters: Fried, fluffy, and tasty. It was also paired with a dipping sauce to add a little bit of twang and spice. Rating: 3.5/5 Entree's: Jerk NY Strip- I would never qualify that as a jerk sauce; there was no spice, it was more like a sweet chutney sauce that smothered the steak. The steak looked and tasted like it was boiled, with no sear. The rice was crunchy and a little undercooked. It reminded me of the scrapings from the bottom of a large pot of rice. The plantain needed to be cooked a bit longer; they were really firm. Rating: 1/5 Cornbread crusted snapper- The fish was fried well, but it was underseasoned. You could tell they didn't season the fish fry batter. A bit of salt sprinkled after the cook would go a long way. The beans were tender and also a bit underseasoned, but the dish was very light. Rating 3/5 Oxtail Mac and Cheese- That was more of a safer and tastier option, but I'm not sure why a lot of the sauces are so sweet. The mac and cheese was cheesy and creamy with tender, shredded bits of oxtail. Rating: 4/5 I would come back for drinks and live music, but I will definitely skip dinner.

This time, we showed up around 2pm, the oxtails were cooked- so she ordered the oxtails and grits, I ordered the shrimp and grits. Can I tell you how disappointed I was?!? This plate of shrimp and grits, the cream sauce looked like it had been reheated from frozen in the microwave. It looked a little curdled. I'm always down for an adventure- so I ate it. The taste wasn't bad, it just wasn't really good. Sad to say- it was mid at best. Plus, the shrimp still had the tails on. Imagine that! My sister said the oxtails weren't cooked enough- she had to cut the meat off the bones. Hopefully this was just a really off day. Based on my first experience, maybe I should stick to morning visits.. but I'm sure I'll return.

Captain Jim's has the freshest seafood in North Miami…read more We often dine in, but occasionally we've also taken fish or lobsters to grill when tailgating etc., and it's always way better and fresher than what we would have picked up anywhere else. Choosing which lobster or yellowtail from the ice counter you want them to prepare, and how you want it prepared, is a fun part of the dining experience for us. Occasionally they have hog snapper or another fresh catch available. The fried lobster tail was fantastically seasoned with a little kick, and I've never had it prepared this way, chopped up into bite-sized pieces. Very filling and we could have shared one, but we still managed to devour both tails and left very full and satisfied. Each tail, including one side, was about $40 - but market price items vary based on size and weight of what's available that day. There are also plenty of less expensive options on the menu. One of my favorites is the yellowtail sandwich. And if you get there before 7:00pm you can order some oysters and lobster croquettes from the happy hour menu. Captain Jim's is a casual and comfortable restaurant with marine decor where the food is the star. Service is always friendly, helpful, and attentive.
