The store is well laid out, people working there are helpful and friendly. The prices are pretty reasonable as well.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore

Habitat for Humanity ReStore

My do-gooder senses are tingling…read more Have you ever heard of the Habitat ReStore SuperStore? Me neither until today. It's in the NE right next to The Brick. Competition? Probably not. But it's an ingenious little concept that seems to be working. The space Habitat has secured is HUGE. It's comparable to any other big furniture store in square footage. The difference here is that all of the furniture is donated (right now there's a ton of furniture from The Palliser since they're doing a bunch of renos. I'm going back to get me one of the desks). Any of the profits from the store go back to supporting Habitat for Humanity. They've got everything from bathtubs and kitchen sinks, to dining room chairs, living room sets, armoirs, desks, even a row of doors at the back should you need a new one of those. Beyond supporting Habitat, the best part of this place is the price tag. Most of it was priced at $100 or under. How perfect is that? Especially if you're planning on turning one of these finds into your own little custom project. What you won't get is a guaranteed find. The furniture is sold as-is and is dependent on what people bring in. But hey, the price is right, the cause is right, and if the piece of furniture fits, that's enough reason for me to stop in here first.

Melange for you home is exactly that. For those of you who didn't pass french class, melange means…read moremixture. And you can certainly get a mixture of stuff for your home at this relatively new store. Make no mistake, this place has great decorations but it comes with a price. You probably wouldn't want to furnish your entire house with things from Melange, but on those days when you are sick of your dark and tiny basement apartment, it is fun to go here and imagine. (Future birthday gift idea: I would totally love a lamp that is the same price as my rent.) Last time my mom came to visit me in Calgary, this was one of her favourite stores. It is a great place to find some wonderful fabic, pillows and things for your patio. I practically had to drag her out of here. You are welcome Visa Bill Collectors. The staff here was really nice, but just a little too chatty for me. I like to chat as much as anyone, but sometimes I really do just want to browse and take it all in. If you are looking for a unique and quality gift for your mom, grandparents or strangely old friend, then you'll probably find it at Melange for the Home!

Melange is gorgeous shop with many beautiful antiques. I recently decided to redecorate and noticed…read morethis shop which is a few blocks from where I live. I was really excited to go take a look since I'd noticed so many things I would love to own in the front window alone. Upon entering the shop my opinion of the place turned sour immediately based on the distasteful attitude presented by the staff. I am probably a bit younger than melange's general cliental and therefore was met with suspicion and malcontent. Instead of welcoming me into the shop or showing an interest that someone of my age (25) might be inquiring about antiques, I was made to feel as though I had made a wrong turn and wandered into the wrong store. Despite this cold reception, I chose to brush it off as them being overprotective of their grossly overpriced inventory. When I shop I like to carry my backpack with me as it makes carrying things home a lot easier. Instead of asking me if I could remove my backpack, which I am familiar is a custom in most retail shops such as these, I was told to watch where I was going as I might carelessly knock something over. Again, fair enough, I offered to take it off and leave it where the saleswoman could see it. After suggesting I leave it on an armchair she scoffed at me "well not there, that's a $4000 piece" as to suggest that was well above my price range. Instead I put my pack on the floor and headed towards the dowstairs where I noticed an item that caught my eye. I was followed by the second salesgirl who I asked about the piece and then asked if I would be able to take a photo with my phone for reference sake. I was told that the owner didn't like that and I dropped the subject and continued downstairs as the salesgirl followed me. Having already expressed one item I may be interested in, you would think the salesgirl would suggest other similar items I may be interested in or at the very least strike up a conversation inquiring about what sort of theme I am decorating to. Instead I was just awkwardly followed around while she arbitrarily moved small items around in order to be less conspicuous about watching me. I became very offended and went back upstairs to look at the remainder of the store. At this point I had no interest in seeing anything else as I felt very unwelcome. I was going to say something but instead decided against it and went to ask about wall masks having seen a small selection and wondering if there were others. I stood by the older saleswoman who initially greeted me, hoping to get her attention, but she seemed more interested in delegating tasks to the other girl. Finally she acknowledged me and told me that the masks hanging on the one wall were all they had in at the moment. I asked if there was a catalogue they ordered out of and she told me that there was but "they are all around the $850 range like those ones" again with the prices. I had no interest in the masks on the wall but asked if I would be able to see said catalogue, to which I was told she didn't have it with her and didn't know when she would next and that they were closing for the say soon so I should try to come back another time. I left at that point, which I should add that the younger salesgirl thanked me for coming and told me to have a nice day. Having already been to several places looking for antiques I have to say I've never felt so unwelcome. Ironic that the patron becomes patronized. All other places I went to the staff were very warm and helpful and excited to suggest and show me different things, as well as leave me be to look at things by myself. If you are looking to pay grossly inflated prices for antiques and have it served with a side of snooty comments, then by all means Melange is for you. Otherwise I would look elsewhere as I'm sure there are lovely antiques at many other Calgary locales.

Hear ye fabric lovers! I've found heaven on earth…read more My mom recently discovered a post by this company on instagram and discovered that it has recently opened to the public. So of course, we had to go check it out. This is literally a labyrinth of every fabric and sewing accessory imaginable. With floor to ceiling shelves, you could spend an entire day in here. The staff were also lovely, and very helpful. Might I add that the prices are WICKED. My only criticism was that there was a very limited selection of quilting cotton. This is the majority of the fabric I purchase, so I was a bit sad that there was only one small section to choose from. However, if you are into a variety of sewing projects this is the place for you!!

We decided to ignore it, and went again about a month later. We were looking for materials to make monster hunter leather armor. We had found the perfect leather, and were told to put it aside until we were finished shopping by another employee. It was left on a side table at the back, after being explicitly told that we had access to it. We came back after half an hour of shopping, and the same employee who set it aside was selling it to another person. When confronted, both employees doubled down and told us that we were wrong, and that they were going to sell it to another customer. We repeated what they had told us originally, but they kept insisting that we had not communicated at all. The other customer also became upset and left without buying any leather due to their behaviour. One of them proceeded to tell me "Ninety Six dollars" per square meter, when they had said eight dollars to the other customer. When we went to pay, we explained to the employee our concerns, and why we ended up not buying anything. He again became very argumentative, calling us liars, and then simply refusing to engage in any conversation, however helpful or constructive it may have been. Overall, I would never recommend this store, which is unfortunate due to their wide variety of fabrics.
