This review is long over due. We visited Home Smart Designs through a friend's referral and Ray greeted us when we went in. It's a small showroom but it has everything you need to see. Ray was very knowledgeable with his products and made some recommendations. We ended up ordering the Duette PowerView Gen 3 for the bedrooms/kitchen and the Luminette Privacy Sheers for our living door sliding door. We have them for about 6 mths now and they're great. All automatic but need to change batteries already so I recommend getting rechargeable. read more

We had a phenomenal experience shopping for blinds for our home at Home Smart Designs. We first visited the store in Fremont, on a whim, after meeting some friends in the area, although we live in SF. The shop owner (Eileen, I think? I forgot her name) was very helpful, showed us a bunch of options and answered any questions we had. She gave us a quote for our selection, too. We then shopped around that quote at 5-6 other places and realized that Home Smart was consistently lower than other shops we spoke to. They didn't nickel/dime on extras either. So we had Jack come over for an in-person consultation and measurement. He was very knowledgeable, provided us with practical options, helped us make tradeoffs, and was very decisive. I got Hunter Douglas Parkland blinds, Luminette sheers, and roller shades (8 windows total) all automated with Powerview from here. From the beginning, Ray was incredibly patient with us even when we made multiple trips down to the showroom in order to pick out colours and pore over samples, even accommodating our requests to swap choices halfway even after we'd made our initial order. He also provided initial guidance on what would make sense for our budget and home, along with coming down to take measurements and advising on how installation would work, even with some of my esoteric requests (like accommodating a portable AC unit vent exhaust hole for one of the windows). He was also incredibly responsive to inquiries and other concerns I had, unlike some of the other Hunter Douglas/Lutron dealers around here. During the day of installation (just a little under a month after I made the order), the two installers (Hai and Qiang) who Ray got to do the job were professional, courteous, and very neat and tidy in their work. Additionally, they were happy to make all the minor adjustments that I asked for, and provided sound advice on why certain things I wanted wouldn't make sense, going as far as to give a good-faith attempt to install things the way I wanted, showing how it neither worked well nor looked good, in order to convince me what a better idea would be instead. Ray also stopped by during installation to spot-check their work and make sure everything was done properly, helping to catch a minor mistake or two along the way and rectify it on-the-spot. I am really thankful for the extra effort and time they all spent on making sure the job was done right. The end result? All 8 windows are now fully automated with their respective window coverings, look beautiful, and I couldn't be happier with the end result. The showroom may be in a less-than-fancy part of Fremont, but I'm glad that didn't deter me from going in. I hope Ray and his team are around for a long time; if I ever move to a new place, I'll definitely be choosing to work with him again for whatever window coverings I need done. read more

I'm still amazed at these folks work, and what I paid for it! I won't give you exact numbers, but know this...I saved THOUSANDS on getting all 8 Windows custom fitted with BASS WOOD plantation shutters! We found this place on Yelp, and thought "hey, this is right by our house!" It is kinda hidden behind Costco in San Leandro, but what a find! The installation came out flawlessly, and the shutters work great. Before discovering this place we were getting ready to go with Hunter-Douglas Vinyl covered shutters, and found other low priced options, but none of the lower priced folks offered the Dual Stick openers that mount on the outside of the shutters so that you don't see a stick in the middle of the inside of the shutters (see my pics). They do take time to order and ship to the Bay Area, but worth all the time to get a HUGE BANG for your buck! I promise you'll be happy with their work as I am, and you'll celebrate by splurging at Gary Danko with all the money you saved! The price for shutters here is literally half of the estimates you'll get at other places (we got 3 other estimates). I don't know how they do it but if you want to save money, here's your place. The time from the initial request to installation was about 3 months. The reason being that the shutters are made in China so it takes quite a bit of time and summer months are the busiest for imports. We initially put an order in for shutters for 21 windows but a few weeks later, we wanted to add an additional 4 windows on. Elling came by for the additional measurements and was able to add it onto the order. Installation only took one full day and the guys were very prompt and detailed. We have carpet upstairs and they wore shoe covers to protect the carpet from any dirt. Communication was mostly via email and there was 1 missed appointment (on their part). Sometimes it did take a while for a response, but if you're not in a rush, it's not a big deal. read more

I started my plantation shutter search as soon as I purchased my very first home. I knew exactly what I wanted from pictures on Pinterest but never knew that these gorgeous plantation shutters were that pricey. I went to Home Depot, Lowes, Costco and online searches and had a few representatives from various shutter companies come by for complimentary consulting and pricing. HunterDouglas quoted me roughly $7,500 for my entire house which consisted of about 11 windows. Damier Shutters quoted me about $6800 (which the representative said included tax and a first time buyer of 20% discount....REALLY???) I was on a budget and thought that I was down to my last straw and probably would have to resort to the old school blinds or curtains for a few years until I save up again. Thankfully, I found Home Smart Design that was referred to me by another friend of mine. Words cannot express my gratitude for this company. I met the owner or manager, Eling who came by my house to take the measurements and assured me that it was going to be a good deal. She came by with the demos and gave me advice on what would look best on my windows with her many years of experience. I truly cannot thank her enough. The shutters had to be customized to fit each window accordingly, so it took about 1.5 months or so for delivery which I was fine with considering that I was also remodeling my home at that time and not move in ready. When the plantation shutters arrived, her staff of 2 men came by to show me the products first to make sure I was satisfied. They helped me take off the old broken shutters and took their time to install the new ones meticulously. They were super professional, ensuring that they do not dirty my brand new carpets by placing protective covers over their shoes and my carpets. They came back the following day to do minor touch ups and asked if there is anything else they can do (i.e. adjustments, crown moldings for shutters, etc). What a fantastic team, Home Smart! Jack is good and diligent at his work. He came and quickly measured out the windows I asked for spacing. The only issue really is that I didn't want a battery operated system, and instead wanted an electrical routed system but I wasn't given that. Overall, the process was relatively painless, and the installer, Not Jack, needed some additional direction on how to install the system. read more

Sadly, this place does not live up to the 5 star rating. Went in and spoke to someone who was very pleasant, not incredibly knowledgeable, he kept saying "my manager told me these were such and such price/quality" He took down our names, emails, and phone numbers and said his manager would get back to us in a day or so. We waited 3 weeks, and decided, well, if that's how things are gonna go, it's probably best this way. Then out of the blue, I get a phone call from someone at the company. Very confusing conversation because there is no introduction of who and where you are calling from on the call just "I can create an appointment to measure?" Once I understand which company is calling, we set up an appointment. My husband stayed at home for the appointment, I could not, so I have nothing to share on that experience but he said it was fine, and the woman had a few suggestions about putting different shades in different rooms, so she was knowledgeable. She left saying she'd email. 4 weeks later, no email, no call, nothing... so I guess it's back to our original thought of "It's probably best this way if this is how they treat clients." Not sure they'd stand by their work if there was a mix up and I'm not a fan of their work ethic. read more

I had an appointment today with Jack from Home Smart Design, to come to my home and give me an estimate for interior shutters. The appointment was setup last week, originally set for noon today. I received a call today at 9:52 am, it was Jack asking if he could change the time of our appointment today. I agreed, and asked him if he was sure he was coming today. Jack said, "oh definitely!" Our new time for today's appointment was set for 3:30pm. Jack from Home Smart Design just called me at 3:21 pm, to tell me he wasn't going to keep our appointment. When he asked to reschedule, I told him don't bother! I would never do business with a company that thinks that little of my time! Waiting here all day for an estimate, an estimate that that never happened! What a complete waste of my day. Luckily there are several other companies coming to give me an estimate for interior shutters. I found Home Smart Design to not be so smart! Maybe you'll have better luck getting them to show up for an appointment they scheduled. I on the other hand, found it grossly disrespectful. I'll spend my time and money elsewhere. We are so pleased with our plantation shutters. We had them installed throughout our home a year ago and have not had any problems at all. The quality remains very high. The shutters help to block out heat in the summer and block out cold in the winter. I can't imagine you would find lower prices for the high quality anywhere else. We were blown away by the plantation shutters we just purchased from Home Smart. Beforehand, we got multiple estimates--including one for name brand Hunter Douglas shutters--and in the end, nobody could compete with Homes Smart. The shutters look beautiful. They are 100 percent bass wood. The mechanism for rotating the blades works great--very quiet. The frame around each shutter looks quite handsome as well. Additionally, the slider door shutters glide perfectly. Beforehand, Elling came out and measured each window. When her crew performed the installation two weeks later, everything fit like a glove. I can't say enough about her crew! They arrived on time and worked very, very hard. What's more, they moved whatever furniture needed moving on their own, and returned everything to its original place when they finished. Also, they cleaned up all of their mess, too. Great job, guys. If you're on the fence about plantation shutters, and the cost thereof, Home Smart offers your best value. When we looked into Hunter Douglas shutters from a local shade company, their estimate was a good $3K above Home Smart. And, their product was composed of liquified wood covered in vinyl. Additionally, they could not cover one of our slider doors and a critical kitchen window because their shutters' frame needed a wide clearance (and you cannot cut a frame made of liquified wood, apparently). No problem for Elling and her crew from Home Smart. They cut their frames to size and never charged for the added labor! By all means, if you're considering plantation shutters, get multiple estimates ... Just make sure one of them is from Home Smart. In the end, your decision will be obvious. read more

I bought shutters from Home Smart, and the were great. Very low prices, excellent quality, and perfect service. I think they have connections in China so they can get raw materials and products very inexpensively, and don't use a middle man, so they pass the saviungs on to the customer. That was my experience. Due to the exorbitant, totally unreasonable cost of custom plantation shutters from the obvious outlets like Home Depot (almost $1000/window in our modest case), we took a chance on Home Smart Design. We are glad we did! For 60% of the cost of Home Depot, the final installed Bass Wood product appears to be absolutely indistinguishable from the more expensive Home Depot offering. Beautiful! We are delighted. There are some minor drawbacks that lead to the 4 star rating rather than 5. Communication is an issue, as English is nobody's first language. But with the lady in charge, it was not bad. All communication with the installation workers was by hand signal and a few words of English. One shutter did not fit exactly (a tricky dual window at right angles) so they ended up shimming it slightly--looks fine to me, so I had no complaints. Finally, the wait time from measurement to installation was about 2+ months, a bit longer than had been promised (all vendors have a long lead time). We would (and do plan to) use Home Smart again in the future. I might be a bit more hesitant if buying synthetic shutters, as the material used in construction is all-important, but with wood you can clearly see exactly what you are getting. Mona 11/5/2018 . I was treated no body and treated nothing when I tried to reach Elling for a small issue with one of curtains her team installed in September, 2018. I called and texted Elling. Within 10 days, Elling only called back once and replied in text once with nothing that the issue would be taken care of. Up to now, Elling continues to ignore my call and text. The staff here are amongst the most honest business people I've ever had the pleasure of working with. I purchased marble flooring, cabinetry, kitchen sink, disposal, backsplash tile, toilet with washlet, and kitchen countertops. All of their prices are extremely reasonable and even best most online prices. They are a retailer for MS International in Hayward and recommended I check out their showroom and we ended up picking marble flooring. The staff at Home Smart are super friendly and personable. They come to your job site to check things out to make sure the work is scoped properly. There was a slight mishap with the kitchen countertop installation, but they resolved it to my full satisfaction. I highly recommend this store to anyone looking for excellent quality finish materials for their house remodel. Home Smart can source nearly anything you need, and at terrific prices! We had plantation shutters installed by home smart design few weeks ago. I believe they are made of basswood. So far very happy with the result. Their prices are the best! Some DIY websites were selling their basswood plantation shutter for the same price. I had another quote from someone that my friend used and suppose to be very reasonable. They quoted me the same price as home smart design, but it would be with poly material plantation shutters. The installers did a great job too. We have an older house so the windows are no longer square shaped so he had to be creative in getting the shutter to fit. They don't charge extra for that even though it requires more work. The price they quote you includes the installation. They cost about $20/sq ft. read more
