We contacted 4 remodeling companies before choosing Old Bay Remodeling, After my wife's almost an…read moreyearlong research to find materials and selections to complete the kitchen, we decided to get bids from Angie's list. Old Bay came in highly recommended with a 4.7 star rating. We got other bids from contractors 4.5 stars and above. We had a contractor who showed up on TV who bid the job at 4 times the price of Old Bay and we had contractors who my wife called 'Chuck in the truck' contractors who bid my kitchen at 30% cheaper than Old Bay. The big name contractor came with his pamphlet, tried to push his branded materials on us - "You can only choose backsplash from this pamphlet" they said. We had to wait 10 weeks to get started they said. They will give us warranties on materials for 10 years, but we have to pay for labor, would something go wrong. The estimate was a 10 pages long with 9 pages of their marketing bullshit and one page of the actual estimate. Also wanted me to pay for design before they even gave me any drawings - not even rough drawings with the estimate. The Chick in the truck - unlicensed guy with his helper in a truck, said he can start tomorrow. We can purchase any materials and he will put it in. He gave us a labor only bid literally handwritten on a notepad piece of paper. I was pretty sure after the work is complete, I would never see him again. Then comes Old Bay Remodeling and Bill Keeling. Licenses and Insurance checked out. Reasonable 5 weeks delays to start the job. Detailed drawings and sketches with a 3d rendering of how things would look at the end. The process took about 5 days with some edits. But we were able to sign a well written contract, 3 pages long. But no marketing bullshit or content. 3 pages of how the work will be done, what is included, not included and what ifs. We went with them mainly because of Bill the sales guys and Sara the designer. The construction started and there were some hiccups, but mostly all right. The job was completed with a 2 day delay - I'll give them a pass on that. Trash was left outside for couple days, and I had to call the office to get it removed. But the actual kitchen looks great!

He was very enthusiastic and friendly and texted me a quote for the job later that day. His offer was about $600 less than another offer and they have good reviews on Yelp, so I decided to give them a try. I'm glad I did. Alan and two of his guys showed up on time and completed the whole job in one day. Alan kept me updated on the status of the job throughout the day. The guys did a great job and did a couple of extra small paint jobs without extra cost. They accidentally broke the glass on a lamp, but Alan made an effort to buy a replacement at IKEA. This wasn't necessary, but it was a great indicator of their consideration. We'll definitely use these guys for future paint jobs.

This is a long review, so bottom line up front: Modern Remodeling built a patio in our yard in…read moreMay-July of 2020. Less than a year later, it is falling apart due to poor craftsmanship and we are receiving quotes that cost almost 2x what we paid Modern Remodeling (MR) to build our patio in the first place. They also quoted us 1 week to do the work, and it took almost 2 months. More details below. On the quality of work: Almost immediately after our patio was finished, we noticed the mortar cracking and that the flagstone tiles were loose and wiggling. As we hadn't made our last payment on the project, Javier came out and fixed much of the mortar. But a few months later, we started having the same issue again, and nearly all of the stones are loose at this point and the mortar is crumbling throughout the patio. So this month, we asked four contractors to come out and assess what is going on with our patio and propose solutions to fix it. They all agreed that the issue boils down to MR using a sand base for our patio, and then mortar between the stones, rather than putting down a concrete base. A knowledgeable contractor would have known not to put down a sand base and use mortar between the stones on top. Permanently fixing this will require completely taking up our patio, laying down concrete, and re-doing the mortar, which is estimated to cost us more than $8k. Even band aid fixes to the mortar that will last 1-2 years are estimated to cost us around $5k. Beyond the mortar, there were other issues. During the project, MR broke our fence and our shed. The fence was eventually fixed, but the shed was not. Matthew also stained our fence after the flagstone was laid down, and sprinkled spots of stain all over the newly laid flagstone. He suggested coating the patio in a sealant to hide these stains. That sealant is now peeling off and looks terrible, so we are also having to ask contractors about the cost of getting this removed as well. Lastly, MR cracked one of the flagstones, and rather than replacing it, tried to put it back together with mortar. Pictures of all of this are included. On the timeline: There were constant delays throughout the project. Some were outside of the control of MR, such as finding extra concrete underneath the gravel in our yard, and issues with our nearby dumpsite and their supply vendors. But at most, this should have added 1 or 2 weeks to the timeline, not 7. There were many other issues were on their end, I think starting with their ability to come up with realistic timelines and communicate honest information to us. Nearly every day that the project was delayed Matthew would say "We'll just get 10 guys out here tomorrow, and we'll have everything done for you in one day." Then the next day, one or two guys would show up, and often times work on our yard for half the day, and at the end of the day Matthew would tell us "Oh, just one more day. Everything will be done tomorrow." Many days they would not come at all because rain was in the forecast, and it would not end up raining, or it wouldn't rain until 3pm or 4pm. There were other days when I would call or text Matthew to confirm that someone was coming that day, and he would respond that yes, someone would be there to do work, and then no one would come. It was like this constantly throughout our project, and in the end, I ended up needing to threaten to write a review like this one, or to contact the Better Business Bureau in order to get the job completed. Matthew also constantly reminded me to use the Buildertrend app to see the project timeline, progress, photos, etc. For more than half the project, I could not access my project in the app and made Matthew aware of this. Once I gained access, there was never any up-to-date information provided about our project or the timeline. I think many of these issues boil down to this company being inexperienced and overcommitted. When the work was done last summer, I felt that it would be unkind to leave a review like this for a young business just getting its feet off the ground, but now that I am looking at potentially paying double the cost of our patio in the first place, I feel that it is important to warn others before contracting this company for projects.

Our metal handrailing was also in need of sanding and painting. After getting several quotes, we selected Carlos Mosquera and his crew. They gave us an estimated start time and the crew arrived on time and got right to work. They worked for two days just cleaning all the windows and house trim -- and even the gutters and soffits! What a difference that made. It made everything, even the areas like gutters and soffits that would not be painted, look so clean and bright. After two more days, the trim that needed replacement was replaced, all the trim was primed and repainted, the railing was sanded and repainted, and the exterior of the house now looks as good as new. The crew made sure that all the windows opened properly and did a fine job of cleaning up. The house looks wonderful. Based on our good experience, we would highly recommend them.

One example:His estimate for tightening a kitchen cabinet ran into thousands of dollars!! He came up with some convoluted explanation about the wall of the cabinet needing to be rebuilt, the dishwasher needing to be removed, the wall next to it needing to be totally rebuilt ,the adjacent door also needing to be taken off, then needing to repaint the doors .....and on and on. Another workman showed me that the screw just needed tightening and refused to even charge me for such a ridiculously small 'repair'! He guaranteed his work for a year. The tile work he did on one tub has resulted in puddling on the floor every time the shower is used. It's been 3 months since he was paid in full for ALL of his work. Two weeks ago I contacted him to fix the puddling problem. No response ! Since my call to him the puddling is only one of a number of things that that he worked on that isn't working properly! His "WARRENTEE " isn't worth much since he doesn't respond even 3 months into the first yr! Must of been his wife or mother who wrote the favorable review before mine. I give him, his work and his word zero stars!
