    Senior Helpers - Dementia Care

    Senior Helpers

If this group could get 100 stars on this site, that still wouldn't be enough. We were given…read moreSenior Helper's name by a group that helps find caregivers, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Our quite elderly mother was in need of home care. In reaching out to Senior Helpers, they were immediately responsive to our needs. They came to Mom's home, checked things out, talked with her and then called to say they were on board with helping us. All of Mom's children are out of state and so it was important to have people we could trust that were there and close to Mom. There were a few hiccups the second week. Senior Helpers were at Mom's home the next day, addressed any issues and assured us that there wouldn't be any more problems, and they were right. Now to the amazing part. Mom became terminal pretty quickly and Hospice was called in. It was determined that someone needed to be with Mom 24/7. A family member was there with Mom by that time but had to leave to go home, out of state. There would be a lapse of 36 hours before a family member would be with Mom again. So what does Senior Helpers offer up? They will stay overnight and all day with Mom until another family member arrives. This was done on 2 days notice. When asking them if they were able to find someone to stay overnight with Mom, the woman that answered the phone (Kim) said that if they didn't have any caregivers available, SHE WOULD COME AND STAY OVERNIGHT WITH MOM! Who, in this day and age, does that? In a time of high stress for us, these people were amazing. I would highly recommend this group to anyone. Nothing/no one is perfect but they come pretty darn close.

If your loved one needs more care than simply sitting in front of the television all day, do not…read morecall Senior Helpers. Their claim of being "experts in Alzheimer's and dementia care" is one of the biggest jokes in recent history. Alz/Dem patients need consistency and routine. Senior Helpers meets this need with a rotating door of caregivers. Plus, their ever-dwindling staff is just the right size to provide no back-up options in case your caregiver calls off sick. Alz/Dem patients need constant attention and interaction. Senior Helpers more than meets this need with its extensive library of ambient videos of fish and other animals. Your loved one will get all of the love and attention he or she needs with constant reminders from the caregiver to "Watch the video" or "Look at the cute little kitten." Alz/Dem patients need assistance with most of the basic daily tasks. A seasoned Senior Helpers caregiver will always make sure your loved one goes to the bathroom unless he or she resists in any way. Then, you'll come home to soiled pants and other dirty laundry. Alz/Dem patients need to take medication daily. Count on Senior Helpers to assist with this task until your loved one experiences any level of trouble with it. Then, you will be told that any task involving medication requires medical training, which Senior Helpers does not provide. So, what does Senior Helpers provide? If you're looking for a caregiver who's the equivalent of a car pool dummy, then I suggest you give them a call.

Used to be good--but NOT NOW!…read more I hired this company in 2019, wanting my husband to be able to age in place in a safe manner. I entered this relationship after this company cared for my father the previous years. I wanted to offer my husband safety, comfort, and dignity in his own home. With hospitalizations over the last 2 years of almost 2 months, skilled care was required to ensure his safety at home. I am a working professional. Due to my husband's critical health issues and fragility, in 2023 alone, we used this company for just under Five Thousand Hours (in 2023 alone---not including 2022, 2021, 2020 or 2019 hours) During my husband's hospitalizations (never planned, always critical health issues) I always kept and paid the day help and offered to pay the night help even though I wasn't using them, due to short notice which they gladly accepted. Despite that history, on Friday 2/09 late morning, knowing I was out of town, ( I had emailed them January 3 of my travel for the next 3 months) they sent me an email (NOT A PHONE CALL, NOT EVEN A TEXT) saying they did not have anyone to fill the schedule for Sunday 2/11. (THIS SUNDAY--less than 48 hours away). And that they were discontinuing services with us! I was completely shocked---a company I had trusted to care for my husband for over 5 years. They left a very ill vulnerable person with NO CARE AND LESS THAN 48 hours' notice, on a Friday afternoon! This certainly created unnecessary complications and increased risk for my husband's health, well-being, and safety. My husband is NOT a difficult case. His caregivers liked him and did a good job, when they knew him. Having new people regularly was difficult for all of us, which happened more frequently lately. Discontinuing service, after 5 years (and at least 1 year prior with my parents, so over 6 years) without so much as a phone call really is not a standard of care one would expect. Additionally, when emailing on a Friday (knowing for 5 weeks that I would be out of town that day) that services were being discontinued on Sunday, certainly that gives us no ability to ensure a safe transition of care is in place and put my husband's well-being at risk. This has been a very disappointing ending to a 5-year relationship. If you decide to use these people, I suggest you check your emails several times a day and have contingency plans in place--to use immediately!

Supplies in the apartment disappeared. My main disappointment, though, was with the administration. We received bills totaling many thousands of dollars with no itemization. When I asked about this, I was told that it was too time-consuming for the billing department to itemize! Once, when I was visiting, the care management consultant came over "just to meet me and say hello," and then charged us for the visit. I'm so glad we switched to another group.

That's another story for a group that will get 1 star. Any way, we were given the name of Heart to Heart as a group that is more caring than the previous group and told we should contact them. All of Mom's children are out of state so it was imperative to us that we get help for Mom that is local and experienced. My sister talked to Karin at Heart to Heart and Karin started the process of getting Mom enrolled with them. Due to COVID it took a few extra weeks but Karin kept checking in with us to let us know where Heart to Heart was in the process of helping Mom/us. They reached out to all the places that had Mom's records and got those while we were waiting - very proactive. Finally they were able to come to Mom's home and talk with her. When their nurse came out to examine Mom, we were told by the nurse that Mom was terminal and had days/weeks to live. The contract with Heart to Heart wasn't signed and we were in a panic! Karin carried to contract over to Mom's home that day and got it signed by a family member. Mom was once again under Hospice care with a group that went out of their way to help her, and us. I cannot thank Heart to Heart enough for the peace of mind, support and care that they have given Mom. Amazing Karin, and amazing people at Heart to Heart. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
