Upon tear down of home improvement select's cedar deck that was installed, carpenter noticed they did not weather proof or install flashing along house where deck meets sliding glass door. It seems like this company spends more time putting out fires than doing good, professional work. I don't mean the actual workmanship, that's decent, when it actually gets done. My elderly mother hired this company to do a kitchen remodel. After 7 months, she finally decided to bring in an attorney and H.I.S. is now being referred to the MO Attorney General for suit for defrauding the elderly. Most of the communication from this company was excuses, lies, and empty promises. How many times does a professional contractor have to meet with a family to get a job done? Isn't there a process that is generally followed, including proper estimates and list of supplies needed, an estimated timeline, and ordering supplies in a timely manner? My elderly mother dealt with miscommunication about job specifics, incorrect supply orders that HIS claimed my mother would have to pay for. The workers seemed to be playing a game of telephone, because no one really seemed to know what the plan was. They were doing what they thought should be done, instead of having a clearly written plan. Then when they made a mistake, my mother was supposed to pay to fix it. That is unethical. My elderly mother lived in her house without a working kitchen for over 3 months. The project manager and the president came to her house on several occasions to iron out the details, and still there were delays and excuses. The PM even yelled at my mother saying she was trying to get a more expensive kitchen at a reduced price. There were several times that the PM implied that my mother was lying about what was originally planned. But after reviewing the plan, scribbles on a legal pad, he agreed that she was right. Why wouldn't she be? She knows what she asked for and what she wanted. The longest workday for any subcontractor working was 4 hours. Sometimes there would be weeks that she would not hear from anyone and no one showed up to work. She was led to believe from the beginning that once a job started, it would be worked on exclusively, and that the job would not start until all special orders were ready to be installed. Seven months later, we still need to order a cabinet. The stress has been severe for my elderly mother. She has had to talk to her doctor about anti-anxiety medication and even had to leave home for a week to recover. We know that my mother will not get any of her money back (almost $40,000), but we hope that they will go out of business and not be able to defraud anyone else. read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! I would not recommend them even to my enemies. We made the mistake of hiring this company to finish our basement and have had the worst headache for the past 5 months. We were never given a timeline for the project, even after asking several times. The company employs AWFUL communicators. We were told at one point that the reason our project manager didn't call us back was because he didn't have any good news for us. We went weeks without communication and an empty basement. Not only the is communication unacceptable, but so is the product. We had the most unprofessional crew work on our basement. Home Improvement Select had to send a painter to our hose to fix ALL the painting that the first "painter" did. He literally had to repaint every inch. The contractor (Bob) did the painting the first time and didn't even have painters tape and ran out of paint. They came for maybe 3 hours a day on most days, took long lunches and left trash everywhere. That contractor's work is not only unprofessional- he is as well. He stood in our kitchen demanding a final check or else he would not be able to pay his bills while the job was not done. There was trash in the egress window, a HUGE punch list still waiting including a new paint job and lumber on the side of our yard. He always has an excuse (his car broke down, he got pulled over or his mom is losing her house) and the project manager made excuses as well. We ended up giving the company a partial payment since not all the work was completed and no one was in our basement again for a month and that's not an exaggeration. We called and called and just got excuses from Bob so we finally called and said we were done. New crew or we are ending the contract. We finally got a new crew who had to redo all the work that had been done. read more

We have been told so many lies, I don't think they even know the truth any more. We have had to get involved in nearly every dispute to ensure the subcontractors were paid & it has been a battle to get anything done. The whole reason to hire a general contractor is to manage the project for us. Unfortunately, they have failed at doing that. We have had to apologize to each of the sub-contractors for their troubles & were embarrassed for having done business with a company that was not paying for the work they had contracted out. From our perspective, it seems as though H.I.S. is borrowing money from one project to pay for another. That is not a sustainable business practice & the customers are beginning to see it. When we hired the company, I researched their reputation online & with the BBB. As of January 2015, the reviews were very positive & it looked like a very reputable business. If you research them now, the results are much different. I would never have agreed to hire them knowing the issues that have occurred since we paid our down payment. The experience we have had seems to support the frustrations expressed by others as well. The delays & excuses for delays are constant & the lack of response from the company is disrespectful & exhibits poor customer service. We believed we were hiring a company that was focused on customer satisfaction & willing to work hard to take care of the customer. Before we ever paid a dime, we had had multiple visits from the sales person, the vice president & even the president. After we paid the down payment, we have not seen anyone since. It is very disappointing to feel as though we have been taken advantage. We don't believe the salesman intended to take advantage of us, but because of the way we have been treated & the way the project has gone, we feel foolish to have hired them. We are now almost at the end of August. We have paid over $20,000 for a home addition & have requested mechanic lien waivers for the work that has been done in order to ensure every subcontractor has been paid. The on-site contractor has not yet been paid & has been told by H.I.S. that he won't be paid until he collects our final check. If they are not paying the subcontractors until the job is complete, why were they collecting over 2/3rd of our money up front? Where was our money being spent? They didn't purchase the materials. They haven't supplied the labor. Where did our money go? We will not make that final payment until we have the lien waiver stating everyone has been paid. Since the on-site contractor has not been paid, he cannot sign the waiver stating he has. Plus, we still need to have the final inspection & go through our punch list before declaring the project complete. This whole project has been very stressful and frustrating. We have learned the hard way all the things we should have known before signing with Home Improvement Select. All we can do now is warn others to not hire this company. read more

They showed up first thing in the morning and had my Brand New showed/Walk in tub in by the time the contract said it would be finished. The installers did a fantastic job!! However make sure you read the contract and do not trust what they "Say" they will do. Had some verbal agreements that they said would indeed be done that had not been detailed in the contract, when I inquired with the installers they said its not in the contract and they would check. After initially saying "OK" they got permission to complete, the management changed their minds. Again installers FANTASTIC....salesman not so much, but they did get the sale so I guess they did their job. In the end.....MAKE SURE EVERTHING IS IN THE CONTRACT.....otherwise it may not get done. read more

Hilarious! I guess this company employs the high pressure sales tactic, no other reason to require a spouse to be at a meeting about a bathtub! Our project starterted in April and our $7,500 bathroom is still not done correct!!! We've called and called and a called. They made a couple appointments with us and no one showed up. My husband took off work and lost pay two days and one day no one showed up and no one even called. the next time be ther at nine no one called till 9:48 im one our out no there now its 1;30 callled to see where there at gone to get somthing to eat will call back now it 4;30 no one her yet on the way now thats what you call service.???? Called three morer times in last week no call back then on and our bathroom still has issues. The customer service is unbilievable. Not the secretarys fault Always told will take care of it. We've delt with Deon, Jake and Shane and talked to secretary multable times and was told someone will call back but know respone . I could go on for hours with the issues, but we just want the situation resolved before we will contact a lawyer or talk to the BBB again. There is mold growing in the caulk around the base of the shower, shower door keeps opening on its own all because the whole thing was installed a 1/4 of a inch off level been going around and round with them.There installer broke a shower door and scratched our three thousand door outside and still no help from this company. A three day job lasted 1 week hard to get workers to show up on time. Always an excuse not a morning person get there at 10 and got leave at noon going to the hockey game end up showing up at noon and work till 7 dust and dirt all over the floors nothing put down to protect floors sink toilet and vanity till i told them to. want me to go on. Avoid this company!! The salesperson promised a 6-8 week start date. A month later we still had not heard from the project manager, then it became 6-8 weeks more. Start date scheduled, no crew shows up, no phone call. We finally reached someone a few days later and all we got were half-hearted promises and no answers. They do not answer their phones or return phone calls. You have to make it your full-time job to actually get someone on the phone, and it won't be because they called you. Still no start date, only excuses and lies. They took our deposit and laughed all the way to the bank. read more

This company is a ripoff! Do not call them and definitely do not use them. They came to my house to give me a bid on a deck addition and sent 2 sales people to apply high pressure and get you to sign. Then they tell you that the more you put down on the job the sooner it moves up the priority list. NOT TRUE! It did nothing except give them the opportunity to steal the money and never provided one single service for the money. All they do is avoid you and lie to you. Now no one even answers their phone anymore, I'm sure because of all the complaints and threats to sue. Not to mention they probably are about to go bankrupt. I plan on calling Channel 5 News Monday. Enough is enough. They are criminals and should be exposed as such. I'm out $5400 and have nothing in return. I have never had this type of issue with a contractor in my life and will make sure I never do again. But first, I want this company to suffer for what they have done.
