The Colwyn Bay store however has opened in what used to be the Litten Tree pub. It's a decent sized shop, spread over two floors. A bit over half the shop is given over to clothing and shoes but you'll also find lots of other stuff including toilettries, household appliances, DVDs and so on. Personally I was a bit underwhelmed. It's not all that cheap, mainly because a lot of the stock is expensive to start off with so even discounted it's still quite expensive. It's a bit like one of thise ex-catalogue shops were all the RRP's are twice what they are anywhere else. OK but not great.

It's therefore pleasing to see at least one new shop buck the trend by opening, even if it is one I'll almost certainly never make a purchase from. Having taken the opportunity to browse the menswear section it's clear there's nothing here for anyone like me. It's mainly cheap designer brands like Crosshatch and t-shirts displaying tacky slogans like You Looked Better From Behind or pictures of half naked young ladies. Now, nice as these pictures might be, they're not the sort of thing I really want emblazoned across my chest. If I was eighteen years old and planning an evening out in the Prince Madoc then maybe they're but not exactly appropriate if you're, er my age, and planning an evening pushing a trolley around Tesco. I think there's more chance of me winning the lottery (and I never buy tickets) than there is of me buying anything from this shop but I nonetheless wish them well and hope this unit stays occupied for some time to come. Being a small family business they will generally take reasonable requests if you ask politely. Loses a star due to lack of choice and they often run out of stock for specific items.

Morrisons is convieniently located in the Bayview Centre in Colwyn Bay. There's a good sized, free…read morecar park and it's only just off the A55 so it's easy to get to. It isn't a huge supermarket by any means but it sells the full range of groceries you would expect to find. There are small entertainment and seasonal departments and a deli counter. There are always fresh (as opposed to frozen) fish and meat in the chiller section. The best offers are always on the ends of the aisles which helps if you haven't got much time to spare as you can save time searching out the bargains. I've always liked Morrisons as they always seem to have good offers available so I always pop in for a quick look when I'm around and it rarely disappoints.

Nice clean store, typical supermarket experience, does well for its size against the big boys like…read moreTesco and ASDA. It's also conveniently placed if you live in Colwyn Bay and don't own a car/motorbike. The store also seems to place more emphasis on the feeling of customer safety, with a burly security guard on patrol in-store, though this can be sometimes be intimidating when one is trying to pick out alcohol whilst being looked at from the end of the aisle.

Colwyn Bay's branch of the discount supermarket Lidl is located in the West End of the town, about…read morea mile or so from the town centre. It easy enough to get by car, being close to the A55 and the main road through town, and has a decent sized car park. You will find cheap and reasonable quality produce, although not necessarily well known brand names. Personally I'm not convinced that the likes of Lidl and Aldi are really cheaper than Asda or Tesco so I don't go here too often.

Their wine is not as cheap as some that can be found in Aldi (though you get what you pay for) and one could find better in the lower rungs of mainstream supermarket shelves for the same sort of price. However, they have been improving their store over the past year including an interior renovation and an automated 'fresh' bread bakery. Nicer shopping experience overall than the nearest Aldi stores, in my opinion.

For most of it's life this shop was called 'Instore'. Although it was obviously part of the…read morePoundstretcher group from the product range unlike the Poundstretcher shops I'd been in (Llandudno, Rhyl and Caernarfon spring to mind) this store isn't long, narrow and difficult to move about in. Admittedly though they have always tried to recreate an authentic Poundstretcher experience by piling stock in any aisle that may be wide enough to negotiate. Stock wise there's a wide range from food to homeware to toys. They also have lots of seasonal stuff so lots of gardening items in the summer and Christmas items in the winter. It's all fairly cheap and cheerful. They possibly suffer a lit bit from being next door to the superior Home Bargains but it's worth a look if you're passing.

Shoe Zone is a cheap and cheerful shoe shop in the Bayview Centre in Colwyn Bay which we use mainly…read morefor the kids. We take them to Clarks which is just opposite to get their feet measured then head straight to Shoe Zone to buy some shoes (sorry Clarks!). The quality isn't great but kids shoes either get wrecked or grown out of in no time so it isn't worth spending lots of money on them. As such Shoe Zone is an ideal money saving option.

Poundworld in Colwyn Bay has recently become one of the first branches to incorporate a "Poundworld…read morePlus" section - i.e. items costing more than a pound. This section includes toys, small electrical appliances, household accessories, etc. I'm not entirely sure how successful this will be as Poundstretcher are only a couple of doors away selling most of the same stuff for pretty much the same prices and then Home Bargains is just one door further on. It's gone from having an identify of sorts, i.e. the only genuine "pound shop" in Colwyn Bay to becoming just another discount shop.

I will attempt to give a comprehensive breakdown of my experiences to complement what the other reviews have already stated, as well as mentioning reasonable alternatives that cannot be found in the store. Bargain examples: 1. Emerge energy drinks (Regular/Sugar Free) are currently offered at £1/litre (25p per 250ml*4 or 50p per 500ml*2). This is about as cheap as most wholesalers will sell it to you. The RRP being 35p for a 250ml can. It should be mentioned that Cott Beverages Ltd. produces this drink along with Red Rooster, Asda Blue Charge and many other energy drinks in the UK so you're not losing out on quality. However, some may find this drink a bit too sour. 2. Snickers bars can be found at £1 for 4 snack bars, either in the form of a 4*individually wrapped bars multipack or 2*Snickers Duo bars. (Beware of the 3*individually wrapped bars multipacks, the cost is less efficient per bar.) 3. Seabrook crisps £1 for a 6 bag multipack. Some of the products, however, are less of a bargain. I particularly find this among the non-ingestible items: 1. The hair & scalp shampoo is a blatant parody of Procter & Gamble's head & shoulders brand, and while it does the job I find that one ends up using more of the product than is desirable per use due to its dryness 2. The same can be said for the huge bottles of Umbro men's power/energy/ice body wash: very watery. 3. The Vivac triple blade disposable razors are not up to scratch for coarse stubble or facial shaving in general. 4. The blank A4 paper they sell is plain rubbish. Too thin. My personal favourite in this category is Tesco Value White copier paper, but I'm not sure how long this will be offered (in its current form or at all) as Tesco recently replaced their Value label with Everyday Value. Don't be put off by the possibility of purchasing lesser quality items one might come across, just remember not to buy too much of a product if you have not tried it before. For the bargains alone I wanted to give the store 5 stars, however I find it quite dingy (as one would expect of a hard discounter) and the staff aren't the most friendly/helpful around compared to a mainstream supermarket like Tesco/ASDA/Sainsbury's/Morrisons.
