We love HOME Soquel, and were excited to try their new sister eatery across the street in the former Vino Cruz location. Peruse the daily menu scroll on the wall and place your order at the counter. You get an order number tent and they'll bring your order to your table. Grab your own cutlery and self serve filtered water. Today we tried... * Fermented Kimchi Caesar Salad with breadcrumbs -- This was good, and the fermented Kimchi does provide a nice umami touch to the dressing without the use of anchovies. Would have preferred crisper romaine lettuce instead of butter lettuce. * Vegetarian Frittata -- Egg omelet with asparagus, kale, fennel and cheese served piping hot in a skillet. I really liked this one. * Chicken noodle soup -- Chicken, fregola (Pearl) pasta, bacon and a touch of Parmesan. Very yummy and really hit the spot for me as I recover from a bout of the flu. * Paper wrapped Black Cod with Miso Chili Butter -- This was good, dish was fresh and tasty, but I didn't get much of the miso chili butter flavor which might have been overwhelmed by the capers. The food was reminiscent of a fine French Mediterranean Cafe -- it was a welcome change from the usual lunch/brunch options around Santa Cruz. Maybe they can spruce up the outdoor seating area a bit to have the ambiance match the food. They have a nice selection of beer and wine. Would also love it if they could post their daily menu on a website or in their Instagram feed. Since the menu changes frequently, it would certainly help us decide which days are best to drop in.

My first experience here was the other night. I didn't know what to expect but figured it might have a similar vibe to VinoCruz. It was a little different. While I can understand the choice to not have a wait staff, I do think they're missing an opportunity. Ordering wine/beverages at a counter in front of the bathrooms, while a line forms out the door was a little off-putting and honestly, kind of awkward. Working with a paper menu on the wall versus individual menus was also a curious choice. I get the desire to be casual (like Beer Thirty) and it's missing the mark a bit. That said, all of the staff were friendly and the two items of food we ordered were very tasty. Both glasses of wine were lovely too. I'd encourage you to check it out yourself and see if it works for you. I'm optimistic it will get better with more time given how lovely their main restaurant is.

I went to Home restaurant first but they were fully booked and they recommended this sister restaurant Home Away to me across the street. Home Away just opened after months and months of delays in late 2025. Pros: + food was fresh and delicious, and a few items are from their sister restaurant Home + cute farm to table vibe with rotating menu written on butcher paper + three parking spots in front of the restaurant + wonderful cashier who was very knowledgeable about the menu and great with recommendations + food came out quickly Cons: - the party ahead of us spent about 10 minutes discussing with the cashier the menu before deciding what to eat. For a casual restaurant, you just don't expect to wait that long to put your order in... - food portion feels small for the price - I was particularly surprised at how small the cod was. Perhaps when their dish washer is fixed and these are presented on nicer plates it will feel more substantive - sign near the front informs you it's self service for water and bussing dishes, but there isn't good signage on where to bus dishes. There was another party who didn't bus their own plates and left, so I think a lot of customers probably don't pay read the signs - tipping guidelines feel ambiguous when customers wait in line to order, order and pay at the counter, self serve water and utensils, and bus dishes. The staff did cashier and provide recommendations, cook, and bring food to our table. I'd prefer if gratuity was built into the price

Finally open after months of anticipation! We stopped in during the opening weekend. You never know what you'll get when a place first opens but they've got things pretty dialed. It is a counter order spot with menus for food and wine in a couple spots near the counter. We chose the rock cod aguachile, charcuterie board, and beef empanada. Everything was so fresh and tasted great. It paired well with the canned red wine from birichino and a GSM from Windy Oaks. The service was super friendly. Can't wait to see what else this place does!

Cute little outdoor spots if you wanna be outside, quaint indoor tables available as well as sitting at the bar to be part of the scene.

What went well? Every single thing. Really great mellow vibe, quaint really personal spot. Home was full, but this is a walk in and order at the counter, find your spot & be delighted over and over. The Caesar salad was delicious, we finished and I immediately wanted more. Then my friend said " maybe we should get another".. we had lots of food coming though, so we held back. I'm going to try and make aioli right now because I'm one of those people that believes they can do anything, but no need to worry, when I fail I'll be back for the chicken & aioli here. The cheese plate was perfect as well. Great oysters, really tasty shepards pie. We will return, it's a sweet spot and has a neighborhood feel, even on the corner of Soquel. Oh oh oh, I almost forgot, the pate! Don't miss it. I got to meet up and catch up with friends over delicious food and wine with the nicest friendliest service & owners. Make sure you come and spend some time here. It's worth it.

I come a few times a month for work lunches and it's always a great experience. Big kudos to the long-time GM Lisa Chiorello for achieving this consistent excellence! Today was an above and beyond moment: I was seated next to a table of 8 senior citizens. They asked the server Bella to split the bill 8 ways, and Bella didn't blink. She acted like it was the easiest thing to do (I know from prior serving jobs, it isn't!). The seniors were having a difficult time figuring out which meal was theirs, and who was paying with card and who was paying with cash. It was quite the scene! Bella had to spend a lot of time with them. She was so kind and patient.... it was a heart-warming thing to witness. And she never missed a beat serving her other tables, including mine. I just wanted to acknowledge Bella's kind and caring actions in a world that sadly is not like that a lot of the time. Thanks Bella for making me smile and the seniors' lunch enjoyable. You are a compassionate and considerate person that every company would be lucky to employ.

It was super gross to feel in one's mouth, and pasta was lukewarm... it makes me wonder if it was "prepared" in advance and just served soon after. Server was nice and did handle the issue promptly with the manager (hence not 1 star). Overall though; this experience just wasn't good. Tried Olive Garden for the first time in over a decade, and was very unfortunately disappointed by it. Probably avoid Olive Garden and try an actual Italian restaurant.

They were chewy and undercooked!) There were a lot of customers there and, I believe only 3 workers: front of the restaurant woman who is your hostess, server, "bus boy", and cashier! Then there was the cook and someone in the back. The service was fine overall but Sapporo fell short on cleanliness and food handling safety. My kids and I were STARVING so we had to just look the other way throughout our dinner. You can tell they were working hard so we didn't want to make a fuss but omg... the woman brought our bowls with her THUMB in the bowls! I could see that it went into the soup one time so she moved her thumb (probably bec it was hot) and almost dropped the bowl on the table. Another time she held a piece of paper (I think it was the order) in her hand while also handling our food, so the paper went into 2 out of 4 of our bowls. She had to shake the piece of paper next to me to get the food to fall off. It was so shocking that it was almost funny. Almost. Sapporo is what I'd call a "hole in the wall" establishment like ones I had been to in big cities, and with those places, I think there is a bit of uncleanliness that you just have to expect as long as the food is good. Based on how packed Sapporo is, I think that's what others feel as well.

The noodles did get soggy over time. My friend's karaage was pretty good. The only thing we'd complain about is that the egg wasn't half raw as most ramen shops does it. It is very cooked which made it super dry. It seems alot of the yelp reviews were about the egg. I hope with many feedbacks about the egg, the chef could improve it make it half raw like most places. I was happily surprised to see a katsu menu (even a plate of mixed katsu), ramen (even Cheesy Ramen), and sushi rolls. I came with friends because we were craving classic Korean BBQ dishes, like spicy hot tofu soup and Dol Sot Chicken Bibimbap (clay pot with sizzling rice at the bottom - yum!) and soju (Korean wine), but we ended up also getting Japanese dishes, like unagi donburi (fresh water eel). Plus, as a classic Korean BBQ place, Sesame served the little dishes of Korean goodies, like kimchi, and they were so refreshingly tasty and obviously homemade! You know it's a good place when you are thinking about what dishes you want to order the next time you come, whom you want to invite, and where the takeout menu is! Service was okay: we were seated quickly and food arrived at a good pace. We had to ask for a few things, like remind them of our drinks, and wasn't checked on, but our server was easy to find and we had no complaints because we were too busy devouring our food and toasting with our pomegranate soju. Other things to note for first time customers: - Parking can be a little tricky because the lot in front of the restaurant is limited to about 5 cars only! Try across the street! Also beware that street parking meters are strictly enforced. - Drinks are delicious. Get them. - The place is spacious, so it's food for large groups. - Ambiance is more of a family restaurant (nothing fancy). The most important takeaways are: the food was delicious and the prices were reasonable!

This is a great spot to go if you are craving Korean comfort food.
