Received this frozen pie as a gift. Instructions were very easy, bake at 375 for one hour. For my review of the actual pie: The crust of the pie is very good, buttery and flaky. The filling was tasty as well but not enough of it, it was very flat. Although I'm a little disappointed that the filling was so scarce, it still tasted pretty good. I think if it was filled a little more I would give this pie four stars. read more

The pies rock...but better to get at the store...'cause they don't always answer the "doorbell" (which is really a "gate bell"!) Only the dog came when I rang da bell, so had to get pie down the road @ Takata Store. It was incorrect on the location on Yelp, so I submitted the correction on Yelp (as it's located on its namesake street - Holys Bakery Road). Everyone can tell you that their pies are good, so I want to tell you the background story on how they got their name. The story goes that originally the family name was "Hori" (sp?) and when they submitted the business license it was misspelled (which happened a lot to immigrants in those days!) and the business license was issued as "Holy" Bakery instead of "Hori"Bakery. You gotta love the colloquial humor of the legendary Kohala bakery. read more

My review is based on the pies I've eaten from this bakery as I haven't actually physically been to the bakery itself before because I don't live on the Big Island. THESE PIES ARE THE BEST I'VE EVER EATEN!!!!!!! I have tried the peach pie with coworkers and also purchased the apple pie from a local foodland store on Oahu. The fruit is perfect combination of sweet and tart. The pie crust is so melt in your mouth. You must eat it with vanilla icecream. Its so delicious and comforting and worth the $20 or whatever they cost to purchase. It reminds me of homemade pies your grandma would make. You can't even tell its storebought and from frozen. I live on Oahu and bought the frozen Peach pie from Safeway. Paid over $17, but thought it should be worth it since I've heard so much hype about how wonderful Holy's pies are. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed it was flat. The pie looked like it lacked filling. I baked it, and sure enough, there was hardly any filling at all. I'll never buy this pie again. read more

Holy's Buttered Apple Pie has got to be one of, if not THE BEST Apple Pie made in the state of Hawaii. No question. The crust is made of shortening, flour, sugar and buttermilk, while beneath the top crust and the fruit filling are dabs of butter that melt as the pie bakes. Sounds simple enough, but believe me, when you put this pie in your mouth, it's like having a "pie-gasm". lol Seriously, so, so ono! Star Market used to sell it on Oahu in the freezer section, but since they've been bought out by Time's Supermarket, not sure if Time's is still bringing it in. Otherwise you'll have to go to their bakery on the Big Island, or at KTA, Takata, Nakahara and Arakaki stores. Or on Maui at Ah Fook's, or on Kauai at Sueoka and Ishihara stores. Just enjoyed a pear pie from Holy's. Scrumptious! We all agreed the crust was flaky (almost as good as my Aunt Helen's) and the pear filling was tender and sweet. We bought the pie in the frozen section of Foodland, popped it in the oven for one hour, and... YUM!! Definitely on the list for future desserts! read more

We live here on the island of Hawaii, And Holy Bakery is the best pie. We Live over an hour or so away on the Hamakua Coast and drive there at least every other month to get some. The grocery stores are so expensive! "Honk your Horn at the gate" your be greeted by a few friendly dogs and a pet pig. Its located across the street of L&L Drive and inbetween the Nabu building. There small shopping stores there if open you can browse for gifts. Business not visible from the street. It's in between 2 buildings. Call before you go. They have a Facebook page!!! read more

Another take home item to bring back as carry on from the Big Island when I visit. This is a must have to be stocked in my freezer at all times. Perfect to bust out on them Sunday night dinners with the family. I went to the bakery long ago as a child in Kapaau and remember going down a dirt road and that's it. Thank goodness KTA carries it so KTA is like the absolute last stop before headed to the airport to catch the Honolulu bound airplane. I sure miss Star Market-Honolulu, who Times Supermarket bought out used to carry Holy Bakery pies but it's no longer found in Honolulu. The box that holds your pie is no shabby or chic decorated box. Just a simple plain white box with a simple label, no biggy. It's frozen when you buy it and when your ready to cook it, all it takes is about an hour in the oven and you got homemade pie. The apple pie is my absolute fav. When that thing is baking in the oven your home is filled with that buttery apple aroma that will for sure make your stomach grumble....'I WANT SOME NOW". Once that warm apple pie hits your palette it's for sure HEAVEN. BUTTER, BUTTER, BUTTER!!! so good. Typing this review is literally making my mouth water for some Holy Bakery Apple Pie ala mode. They have other flavors like Peach and I forgot the others but Apple is the BEST. I've try other apple pies and the others never do justice or even gets close to Holy's. After you tried this apple pie you'll be wanting Holy's over any other apple pie out there. I drove all over the Big Island to find a frozen apple pie from Holy's bakery. I finally found it at KTA superstore in Hilo. I left it in our cooler in our car, then drove back at our condo, it stayed frozen, luckily. I baked it that very night, and the delicious smells of the buttery apple pie wafted throughout our condo. It definitely tastes as good as it smells! But warning, it is FULL of butter. You have to be prepared for this because otherwise you might wonder why your pie filling is swimming in it. It's supposed to be like that, LOL. I might have baked it on too high of a rack in the oven as my botton crust did not brown as much as the top, and the butter was spewing out of the top. But since I wasn't familiar with this oven, it was to be expected; it still tasted fantastic. If you want to put on 15000 calories in one sitting, this is a great way to do it! Next time I will try a different flavor, although apple pie will always be my favorite. I don't think I can afford the calories to eat 2 pies in a week though. read more

We were at Times Supermarket in Pearl City, looking for some dessert to bring over to a friend's house...when I ran across several stacks of these frozen pies in the freezer section, closest to the fresh baked goods. What a concept...frozen pre-made pies that bake while we're eating dinner...and it's actually produced right here in Hawaii. Cool! Unfortunately I'd never heard of Holy's Bakery before (I know I know, blasphemy!), but I saw that it got high marks on Yelp, so alright, I'm sold. There was several types available (apple, pear, peach, and coconut), all $16.49 each...we got pear ("Frozen Buttered Pear Pie"), & I'm so glad we did bc it was delicious!! The crust was light & flaky, with very little sugar if any, but the filling was sweet, thick & fruity, which was a nice contrast...with big slices of pear throughout the entire pie. Instructions were foolproof (bake for 1 hr at 350°), so I'd highly recommend this to anyone for any occasion! Next time, I gotta try the apple pie that so many Yelpers have raved about!! read more

I used to love Holy's bakery's coconut pie! I'd get them frozen at the grocery store and bake them at home (since I'm on another island). However, I recently discovered that my last purchase tasted different than the others. It was just odd tasting. I also noticed small black specks in the crust, which I thought was normal. I was wrong. Embedded into the ENTIRE PIE crust was small bugs and bug fragments. Yes, the bugs were mixed into the pie crust somehow (see pictures). I immediately felt sick to my stomach. I've emailed the company and have yet to get a response. Needless to say, I probably won't be eating any more of Holy's coconut pies! read more

I'm originally from Oahu so I had to map it. However, the map was off and calibrated it to be in the middle of some random place which time it longer than it really was. So, I'm going to write better directions. I came from honokaa, so it was about an hour drive. If coming from kona or waikoloa probably an hour half. When you come into WAIMEA, you turn on to LINDSEY ST. (Left of coming from kona, and right if from Hilo side) And it will have a small fork, stay LEFT on KAWAIHAE RD. then you'll stay in that road until you come to another small fork it'll be a slight right on to KOHALA MOUNTAIN RD. you'll follow that for a while. There will be another split and you'll want to stay RIGHT and continue on to KYNNERSLY RD. until you come to a 4 way stop (you'll see a gas station across the street) make a RIGHT on to AKONI PULE HWY. continue on this road. Once you pass KAMEHAMEHA PARK on your left you'll see two small buildings approaching, one is kamehameha pharmacy. In between the pharmacybuilding and the one next to it is a lane, but it's called HOLY BAKERY RD. you can either drive in or park in front of one of the two buildings and walk. Holy's Bakery is on your right side ( looks like a house) there is a gate so toot your horn to get their attention. There may be dogs in the front so please don't try to walk in alone. You'll find Holy's Bakery on a private road called "Holy Bakery Road" which is adjacent to the Nanbu building on Akoni Pule Hwy (Holy's is right in back of the Nambu building). "Holy Bakery Road" may not pull up on your GPS unit hence use "Kamehameha Road" as a point of reference and it's a block away from as you drive back towards Kona. Phone: 808.889-6865 I brought home all three pies...apple, peach and coconut. We just baked the apple and it was excellent. Not too sweet, very light and the crust was flakey and buttery...just got to try it. Great with a strong cup of coffee. They also have T-shirts...you gotta ask. As posted earlier, you can get these pies on Kauai and Maui. Honolulu just out of luck. Will attempt to work with a few folks in Honolulu to get at least a footprint established again. read more

This is an unusual, but delicious pie. When I was younger, I didn't appreciate it and didn't like it. The crust is extremely short (for non-bakers, this means high amount of fat in proportion to flour) and this may be unexpected for people eating Holy's for the first time. The result is a dense, crumbly crust (with cover) that is like an unsweetened shortbread cookie. This pairs well with the sweet fruit and accompanying gel. Occasional salty butter bites is the best part for me. This is a decadent and unique pie. My family prefers the peach one. But is Holy's pronounced "holly" .... ? read more

OK so Times Supermarkets on Oahu carry the pies- its not the same. My Oahu peeps from 'nalo to kahuku know, fresh baked, hand carried is best! We get :"orders" to "better not show up without Holy's" LOL! So? Fine, the good news is Holy's open at 6a so can call a couple days ahead, make stop with time to pack em up and still make a pretty early flight from Kona, Hilo or Kamuela and WooHoo...fresh, warm Holy's baked pies in a Koolaulea kitchen by lunchtime. I think its on par with freshly roasted ground just before you brew Kona/Ka'u Coffee...some things are just better as fresh as can! Oh yummm - you haven't known buttery flaky crust until you've experienced this "frozen to oven" goodness!! You can't beat their pies! Anywhere! Yes you can get them at Times but better you visit the bakery itself in Hawi, near Upolu Point on the Big Island. What an experience. So sweet. You ring the doorbell and then "Mom" came to take our order (one hot buttered apple pie, frozen of course). We happened to be driving through Kapaau, when Lesliann K. noticed a street sign named Holy Bakery Road. We swung a U-turn and headed down the small lane. Just toot your horn and you will be greeted by nice dogs and nice people. Don't forget to bring a cooler bag and frozen ice packs, as it's only $10/pie so you can stock up and take plenty home! I love their pies. This gotta be one of my favorite desserts ever!! Since I can't make it to Kapaau, Hawaii, I buy their pies in the frozen section of Times Supermarket. It used to be at Hawaiian Style shop, but since they closed, I buy them now at Times. Their pies just melts into your mouth and goes to your heart (in a good way). The filling is buttery and tasty. You need to just pop it in the oven for 1 hour and let the smell permeate through your home! I'd say peach has the better scent. However, coconut, apple, and pear are my favorites in that order. Something about butter and coconut that tastes good together. Don't get it mixed up with Haupia, or the creamy coconut. This has finely grinded coconut inside. The price can be costly for a pie which runs about $17. On sale it's about $14. Totally worth it though! read more

Bought a holy's peach pie at KTA in hilo. This was a sorry sad pie. Very little fruit, gooey gel filling, flavorless flour uninspired crust, and way over priced! You have to have focused on truly great pie found after many years search on the mainland to know pie. ie; Banana Cream Pie at the Apple Pan in L.A., Dutch Apple Pie from Mothers in Julien,CA., Pecan Pie at Little America in Flagstaff AZ., Key Lime Pie at Blonde Giraffe in Key West FL. and on and on. Recommend you buy a pie at Safeway on sale and save the money. read more

We drove 40 min out of our way and in pouring rain to visit Holy's Bakery as it was recommended to us by a friend for having the best pies in Hawaii. We never actually found the place since it isn't at the address listed, but the owner of a shop next door let us know their ovens had broken and they were only making frozen pies to sell to local grocery stores now. We would have never known based on their listings here and Google which both stated it was open for business. Super disappointing. read more

Simply Onolicious!! My fav is the pear pie. The pies are $12.59 in the stores, and they are always sold out. Luckily I stayed with a friend in Kawaihae, so we decided to take a drive out to Kohala just for the pies! The pies are $10 after honking your horn for service (love it!) You know, you don't need a fancy place. I humbly appreciated that type of service coming from Kohala. Very homey with aloha! Have always loved Holy's pies and was thrilled that they are now available in supermarkets on Oahu. However, we bought a peach pie recently, and peaches were woefully scarce. Mentioned this to a friend who buys them also and she said exactly the same thing. The crust and flavor are still the best, but the peaches were few and seem like canned versions of peaches. A nice Japanese tourist stopped at my house go ask for directions to Holy's Bakery. I started giving directions but became clear of the language difference, so I got on my Harley to show them where it is. Gave them freezer bags assuring that they would want to take some with. Even picked up my two favs - one apple one pear.. Glad these folks chose my house to ask directions because I hadn't stopped there in way too long.
