Had to correct map direction...was at wrong spot! The bakery is on its namesake road!

The pies rock...but better to get at the store...'cause they don't always answer the "doorbell" (which is really a "gate bell"!) Only the dog came when I rang da bell, so had to get pie down the road @ Takata Store. It was incorrect on the location on Yelp, so I submitted the correction on Yelp (as it's located on its namesake street - Holys Bakery Road). Everyone can tell you that their pies are good, so I want to tell you the background story on how they got their name. The story goes that originally the family name was "Hori" (sp?) and when they submitted the business license it was misspelled (which happened a lot to immigrants in those days!) and the business license was issued as "Holy" Bakery instead of "Hori"Bakery. You gotta love the colloquial humor of the legendary Kohala bakery.

    Peach Pie from Holy's Bakery

I live on Oahu and bought the frozen Peach pie from Safeway. Paid over $17, but thought it should be worth it since I've heard so much hype about how wonderful Holy's pies are. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed it was flat. The pie looked like it lacked filling. I baked it, and sure enough, there was hardly any filling at all. I'll never buy this pie again.

Holy's Bakery, Inc. Frozen Buttered Apple Pie
    Pomai S.

Holy's Buttered Apple Pie has got to be one of, if not THE BEST Apple Pie made in the state of Hawaii. No question. The crust is made of shortening, flour, sugar and buttermilk, while beneath the top crust and the fruit filling are dabs of butter that melt as the pie bakes. Sounds simple enough, but believe me, when you put this pie in your mouth, it's like having a "pie-gasm". lol Seriously, so, so ono! Star Market used to sell it on Oahu in the freezer section, but since they've been bought out by Time's Supermarket, not sure if Time's is still bringing it in. Otherwise you'll have to go to their bakery on the Big Island, or at KTA, Takata, Nakahara and Arakaki stores. Or on Maui at Ah Fook's, or on Kauai at Sueoka and Ishihara stores. See the photo section to check out Holy's AWESOME Buttered Apple Pie!

    the outside of the building

We live here on the island of Hawaii, And Holy Bakery is the best pie. We Live over an hour or so away on the Hamakua Coast and drive there at least every other month to get some. The grocery stores are so expensive! "Honk your Horn at the gate" your be greeted by a few friendly dogs and a pet pig. Its located across the street of L&L Drive and inbetween the Nabu building. There small shopping stores there if open you can browse for gifts. Business not visible from the street. It's in between 2 buildings. Call before you go. They have a Facebook page!!!

    Bugs in the pie crust

I used to love Holy's bakery's coconut pie! I'd get them frozen at the grocery store and bake them at home (since I'm on another island). However, I recently discovered that my last purchase tasted different than the others. It was just odd tasting. I also noticed small black specks in the crust, which I thought was normal. I was wrong. Embedded into the ENTIRE PIE crust was small bugs and bug fragments. Yes, the bugs were mixed into the pie crust somehow (see pictures). I immediately felt sick to my stomach. I've emailed the company and have yet to get a response. Needless to say, I probably won't be eating any more of Holy's coconut pies!

Ignore the arrow, I was mapping back to where I came from. But this shows KYNNERSLY and the highway to the bakery

This spot is located in a food court area and was actually the only place open when we arrived. Since it is a stall, there is not too much to say other than there were two people working and a large display case filled with donuts, with malasadas in the back. After looking things over I asked if they had a lilikoi circle donut. They did not, but they recommended a strawberry glazed donut with lilikoi filling and I went with that. It came out nicely decorated with a pink glaze and a small dab of cream on top with a butterfly. When I bit into it I was happy with the flavor. The donut itself was light and fluffy and the strawberry glaze was solid. The real standout though was the lilikoi filling, which had that great balance of sharpness and sweetness and paired really well with the donut. My dad ordered a coconut malasada and said it was really good as well. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. They had a big selection of donuts, I enjoyed mine, and I would like to try their malasadas next time.

We definitely want to return before we leave to try their gelato. Hilo's best kept secret tho I can't keep it a secret any longer!…read more FIrst stumbled upon Baumkuchen Farms 16 months ago when I visited the Big Island from Oahu... scouting where I would like to bring my college reunion group. They were gathering from places like Taiwan , Canada, the continental USA so betcha I wanted to show them only the best! Finding anything outside of downtown Hilo can be a challenge as WIFI gets a little sketch. Baumkuchen Farms is easy to find as they are marked on most Hilo (paper) maps. From the phone calls I made to the first welcome from Danielle who was on site to greet us on our scouting trip we felt welcomed. Danielle met us in the parking lot and guided us to the meeting place of the tour. She gave us a brief overview and showed us the bakery, the bathroom, the gift shop, before escorting us to "the hale" the meeting place under shade. Marcus, proprietor of the Farm with wife Maria, further told us about the rich history of the Baumkuchen estate as well as the products they baked and sold. Loved the tour of the farm where we saw vanilla beans growing in greenhouse, jurassic looking fruit trees and beautiful royal palms. A year later returned with my college friends who were absolutely impressed with the operation. We purchased baumkuchen cake, flavored cooking rock salts, other treats and of course ICE COLD drinks (in fact grabbed a few of these before the tour and after). And we enjoyed the tasty samples. In fact, have since seen these delectable morsels of Baumkuchen at Neiman Marcus in Honolulu at much higher price..! Still, nice to know where I can get more when I run out. Or, will have to take another trip to Hilo and Baumkuchen Farms! Thank you Maria, Marcus, Danielle for your hospitality.
