The last of our three children recently graduated from LCP. Two of these started at The Learning…read moreCastle, the oldest was a fourth grade transfer. There is almost no way to state how valuable LCP is, both for the education as well as the foundation that is established. This foundation - in both critical thinking and methods of learning - has allowed our children to thrive in high school and now, for two of them, in college. Not just highly recommended but enthusiastically. The Learning Castle & La Cañada Prep are truly the best!

Where do I even begin? I truly wanted to love this school, but it didn't take long for my instincts…read moreto tell me it wasn't the right fit for my child or our family. The academic approach is heavily based on authoritarian teaching, rote memorization, and repetitive worksheets. There is very little emphasis on critical thinking, observation-based learning, or a true classical education. Instead, students spend their days completing worksheets and then bringing home the same material to review again. The workload is repetitive, overwhelming, and leaves little room for children to simply be children. Students also receive very limited outdoor time. I've witnessed children being punished for minor behaviors, such as talking out of turn, by being required to eat lunch in the director's office or by losing physical activity as a consequence. I have also personally observed instances where both the director and head teachers spoke to children in a disrespectful, intimidating, and demeaning manner. That was extremely concerning to me. Another major issue is the constant fundraising and donation requests. Families are regularly encouraged to donate, yet I saw very few tangible improvements to the school. There is no library, the playground has not been meaningfully updated, and it's difficult to see where those funds are being invested. Even more disappointing is the culture surrounding donations, where families who don't contribute can feel judged or excluded, creating unnecessary cliques within the school community. For nearly $2,000 a month in tuition, I expected a nurturing environment that fostered curiosity, independent thinking, and a love of learning. Instead, I found a school focused on compliance, excessive repetition, and fundraising. This experience simply did not align with the educational values that were promised, and unfortunately, I cannot recommend it.

Most of the funding only funds the robotics and cinema teams. Teachers do not teach and fail students on purpose and the administration has not done anything to fix the problem since they don't hear anyone out. We told the counselors about the issues they're having with teachers but they don't care at all and never do anything about it. I told my teachers before hand that I had a competition to go to and needed extra time to do the homework, I finished it and showed it to them and they said that apparently it's too late, it was impossible to finish all the homework they assigned, plus the extra homework they gave in one day so they gave me a zero. Kortoshian and Landisi ruined this school and they don't know how to run a school. They give you a ton of homework and tests which take away all your free time. No one deserves to go to this school.

I was originally intending for this to be a humorous review, but Andy O. has done a fine job…read moreoutlining the funnier points of the mess that is Anderson W. Clark Magnet High School. Clark touts recognition at the state and national levels for being a top school, and likes to promote its GUSD-leading API ranking, but let's be honest here, the bar is low. There are a few staff members and teachers who care about and do their jobs well, but on the whole, Clark is a case study on academic mismanagement and why many students in the American educational system succeed in spite of the schools they attend rather than because of them. As I sit here at 27 years of age writing this, I'm fairly happy with where I am in my life. I graduated from a top university and work at a job I love, which just happens to be with one of the most successful companies in history. I'm not trying to come off sounding like a tool here, but I want to make it clear that my success in these two areas commonly associated with a quality high school education came as a result of my own hard work, talent, and determination rather than anything Clark can take credit for. Thank you, Clark, for the 'innovative' curriculum that ended up being completely misaligned with the first-year prerequisites at nearly every U.S. university, the lack of any *quality* extracurricular activities, and your Draconian code-of-conduct which sought to stifle any sort of self-expression and created a culture hell-bent on breeding America's next group of mindless followers rather than its future innovators, thinkers, and leaders. On a more personal note, thanks for the 4 or 5 (?) suspensions as well. Like Andy Oh, I guess I too am a gangster. This review is getting too long and angsty already, so I think I'll end here. I will leave you with one last funnier memory, though. During one of its first years in operation, Clark was extremely excited to field a team for the district-wide academic bowl. Expectations were set high since, you know, Clark was full of nothing but the brightest students being coached by the best staff. End result? Last place finish.

Our son started his journey at FPM when he was three years old in TK. He continued through kindergarten and first grade, and looking back, we truly feel that these early years gave him the best possible start to his education. Foothill has provided him with so much more than academics. The Montessori approach helped him develop independence, confidence, curiosity, and a genuine love of learning. He started reading in kindergarten, learned how to build lasting friendships, and developed skills that we know will continue to benefit him throughout his education. By the time he was in 1st grade, he was confident in public speaking and presenting in front of an audience - thanks to the motivation and guidance of his teachers. What has meant the most to us, however, is the care and attention he received from his teachers. In particular, Ms Dushy, Ms Princess, Ms Rebecca and Ms Daniella (TK and Kindergarten) and Ms Sherene and Dr Bodner (1st grade). They were exceptional in recognizing his individual needs, encouraging his strengths, and helping him grow not only as a student but as a person. They placed such an important emphasis on kindness, respect, responsibility, and developing strong values and work ethic. As our son moves into second grade, we can see just how well Foothill Progressive Montessori has prepared him for this next chapter. We are incredibly thankful to the teachers and staff who played such an important role during these formative years. Foothill Progressive Montessori will always hold a very special place in our hearts, and I would highly recommend the school to any family looking for a nurturing environment that truly develops independent and confident young individuals.
