Holy Cross Hospital-- For Rich or Healthy!! The Good and the Bad, of my experience First off, my pre-op team, surgical team and post operation teams were top-notch. Very helpful, knowledgeable, very professional, very kind and all around very courteous and lovely people. I enjoyed being careful by this hospital. It's a beautiful hospital that (I NEVER visited before in my life) pay attention this will come up later. Now, this experience did not start off very well. About 2-3 days before my surgery, I was notified by hospital billing of the full total before my procedure, I started making payments. I broke it up in 4 payments. Great, wonderful, I can afford my surgery after insurance does their part. This part was not so bad, it was a shocker but NOT BAD, new experience but it alright. Upon arrival at the hospital, I was directed to hospital admission. I was greeted by a happy and pleasant gentleman named, Juan. He was kind and wonderful way to start my visit/procedure. I was given a number to wait to continue the check in process. I was called to the Billing Section located in admissions, I sat down and they started to grill me. Apparently, the billing department does not properly annotate their records to show the accounts. I was asked about paying for my surgery, I stated I just made a payment a few days ago and that I'd make more payments at a later date. The gentleman at billing proceeded to argue with me that it was from a previous outstanding balance. I told him that was not possible, I'd NEVER been to this hospital. He then proceeded to argue with me further, that I had to make a payment, I told him I had no more to give as I just made a sizable portion towards the bill. NOW, this was NO WAY to be in a relaxed mood and calm manner before a surgery. This was wholly unnecessary, unpleasant and NOT a good way to treat a patient and customer. This surgery netted them a good amount of money, $11,000 between my payments and the insurance company. The question is will I EVER want to have another surgery here, if dealing with the billing department in-person felt like a mugging, a straight argumentative, stressful robbery. I'm alright with paying what I owe, I'm not alright with being treated like a criminal. So yes, once I clearly Billing, all was well but to get the surgery, that was like a reality television show, "Who Want to Feel Like a Criminal?'" They probably should keep better records and train the billing people better to be less combative, respectful and mindful that they work in a service industry. read more

I delivered my second baby here and had a phenomenal experience with Dr. Prosper and the nurse Jennifer. I would recommend them to any mom awaiting delivery. They are both so kind and encouraging, listened to my needs and provided quality medical care for me and my baby. 11/10 recommend for labor and delivery. The maternity ward experience is nice too with some great nurses Irene, Sevan, Cameron and Terren. I felt very cared for my whole maternity experience here and felt everything was in the best interest and genuine concern for me and my baby. read more

I recently visited the Holy Cross ER and had a mixed experience. First, I want to recognize the physicians who cared for me. Every doctor I interacted with was outstanding. They kept me informed about my condition, explained my treatment plan, and made sure I understood what was happening. I truly appreciated their professionalism and compassion. I also want to give special recognition to my night nurse, Victoria. She was exceptional kind, attentive, and caring. She made me feel comfortable and well cared for throughout the night. Unfortunately, my experience with my morning nurse was very disappointing. I did not see him until around 8:30 a.m., after I specifically asked for my RN. I had not eaten anything for more than 24 hours and asked if I could order breakfast. He told me he would come back, but he didn't return. Around 10:00 a.m., I asked another nurse if I could order breakfast. That nurse said he would check with my assigned nurse. About 30 minutes later, my nurse finally came back and told me I could not order food because I was being discharged. This was confusing because no one had informed me that I was being discharged. After receiving a blood transfusion, the doctor had told me I would likely be admitted for 24 to 48 hours for observation. I calmly explained that I had been asking for breakfast all morning, but instead of acknowledging my concern, my nurse became defensive and said there was nothing he could do. He offered to call the charge nurse, but I told him I wasn't trying to argue over food and that I could eat once I got home. He then removed my IVs, placed my discharge papers on my bed, and left without reviewing them with me or explaining any discharge instructions. A short time later, another nurse came in and introduced herself as my nurse. I explained that no one had reviewed my discharge paperwork with me, and she kindly took the time to go over everything. I appreciated her willingness to step in. Finally, no one officially discharged me or assisted me in leaving. I wasn't told where the exit was, whether I needed a wheelchair, or what the discharge process was. I had to figure out on my own how to leave the hospital. Overall, I am grateful for the excellent care I received from the doctors, Victoria, and the nurse who took the time to explain my discharge instructions. However, my experience with my morning nurse and the discharge process fell well below the level of care I expected. If I could give zeros stars, I would. This review is solely on the check in staff. Currently my family has been here since thursday so i've been checking in constantly, until today. Suddenly after 4 days of being here they say we aren't allowed to be doing what we were doing. I would completely understand the rules and regulations, however, as I was standing at the counter, they said I was not allowed to but allowed a different lady to. I literally called them out on the fact they let this lady do the exact thing they told me not to do and they acted as though they couldn't understand me. I rarely bring this up but i'm fairly certain it was either because I was young or because the lady was white. I'm really upset with the blatant rude treatment especially since i've been pretty much living at this hospital. Now the care my family has been receiving is AMAZING. The nursing staff and case staff is GREAT. It is the check in people that feel like they're on a power trip. Hopefully you receive better treatment from the front than I did. read more

One of the worst ER experiences I've ever had. After being told I had congestive heart failure, the nurse taking my vitals was rude, loud, dismissive, and showed no empathy at all during an incredibly scary moment. Her behavior only made my anxiety and blood pressure worse. Thankfully, another provider stepped in and completely changed the experience, she was kind, attentive, and compassionate. They stuck a painful needle in my arm. When I asked to leave at 11pm after being there 5 hours they refused. This is the worst hospital I've ever been too. Avoid at all costs! They stick a painful needle in your arm to prevent you from walking out without being discharged. I didn't get home until 3am and couldn't sleep at all with 2 hours darkness. I'm a senior citizen and they treated me the worst of any hospital I've been too. read more

This is the hospital to send your love ones to if you want them to die. Nursing staff tell them to urinate in their beds and then leave the there to lie in there. Case managers are perpetually confused about the orders and what to do for home care. You don't get instructions on how to order meals so you miss meals, you lie in the Senior Section of the ER where they warehouse seniors for 9 to 12 hours, claiming that they give them meds which they are not. The nurses and IV team are incompetent. It took me 10 phone calls to get a nurse at night and they had no information about my mother. Avoid this hospital at all costs. read more

Kaiser Permanente sent me here, to an affiliate, because the scope of needed treatment was beyond the capability of their Urgent Care facility. I was assured that they knew I was coming. The waiting area for the ER was a petri dish, with hard plastic chairs worthy of the Motor Vehicle Administration crammed cheek by jowl, and not even a hint of distancing or masking. I feel fortunate not to have contacted any of the respiratory viruses going around. So my turn finally came, and as I lay on the gurney with an IV in one arm and a blood pressure cuff on the other, they shoved a tablet in my face and demanded a deposit. Who else asks for money once the transaction has started besides sleazy used car dealers and [NSFW]? If they did know I was coming, the message got lost along the way. It was twelve hours before treatment was started. There were a few nurses who had it together, but most seemed to treat it as just a job, and one they didn't much like. I was flat on my back for two weeks when they discharged me, no physical therapy, not even help to walk around the halls. I should not have been surprised when, a week later, I fell twice and wound up hospitalized again, followed by another two weeks in a physical rehab facility. Finally (this is Yelp, remember), the food. I have had better in an Army mess hall. I seldom give a one star rating, but if I ever wind up in that place again it will be because I was unconscious and unable to scream HELL NO! to the ambulance crew. read more

I was recently in the hospital due to emergency abdominal surgery. All the staff was very nice, and took their time to answer any questions I had and made me feel very comfortable. In outpatient care the nurse Yvette was truly amazing. She was sweetest, kindest, most patient nurse that took her time with me in helping me feel better before my long drive home. read more

One of the crappiest experiences ever as a caregiver/loved one of a patient in a hospital. Long lines to get a visitor pass. Arbitrary rules on visitor numbers (only two at a time) and they expect the third person that got kicked out to come back to the front desk to check out then check in again when they go back up. Completely asinine. No one chooses to spend time in a hospital. Caregivers don't need to be subjected to this kind of BS. If you care about the "cheer" quality of the hospital stay away from Holy Cross. Go to Suburban or Sibley. They know that visitors are powerful medicine. read more

I like the fact that Holy Cross is in my neighbourhood; however, the wait and dismissive nonchalance of the nursing staff is infuriating. My son and I arrived today over 3 hours ago. The waiting room was empty! (Thank God for small favours especially the day after the 4th of July, right?) Then we sat and sat and sat. We watched the waiting area fill up and empty out as pretty much everyone that came after us, were called before us. I told the nurse that I understand that the elderly and young children are usually seen first, but what about my son? I was told , "Oh, your son is on the "Fast Track" list. What the hell is fast about over 3 hours when the lobby was basically empty? I have lived in this area for almost 30 years and unfortunately most of my experiences at Holy Cross hospital have been disappointing. read more

My family member had major surgery here and the overall service was cold, impersonal and lack of any interest from the staff in the care they provide here. Unfortunately, we like the surgeon who uses this hospital, so we had little choice. But rest assured we will let him know of our experience and recommend avoiding this place for surgeries. The implementation of corporate healthcare is greatly to blame for the decline in care provided. This institution is no exception. A complete lack of compassion and basic humanity was my experience. It appears that no one actually pays attention to their core value of reverence and their mission to provide a "compassionate & transforming healing presence". I know employees have completed HRO training, but I did not witness one aspect employed during my visit. As someone in healthcare, I was truly dismayed at the callousness of the staff; as well as the appearance of my family member in the bed; gown disheveled, bed unmade, et tube harness not applied correctly, I could go on. Instead of compassion, you'll get a constant reminder of how many visitors are in the room. No one even offered us tissues!!! But what they did offer was to keep putting us out of the room reminding us of the number of people allowed. Even in an end of life situation. Never saw the hospice or palliative team; not even the staff clergy. The clerks at the ICU desk have MAJOR attitudes. One started out nice, but I guess mid shift she got tired of opening the door to let us visit our loved one that was dying. Literally only ONE nurse offered her condolences during our stay. The institutions I am employed by would NEVER provide such substandard care. Bereavement carts, private area for the family, and clergy are offered at minimum. We had to 'catch' the clergy while he was walking around one day. read more

Generally speaking, I guess that I had a positive experience. As expected, it took a bit longer than expected to see someone. While my injury caused unimaginable pain, it was not life or death so I guess I can understand why it took me some time to make the rounds were various nurses and X-ray technicians. That said, the nurses that treated me were amazing, patient, and understanding. Unfortunately, the check in process was a bit of a mess. The 1st person who checked me in was eating while working. Ok, I get that the hospital probably was short-staffed. However, I found it to be a bit unprofessional the admin was chewing very loud and talking with her mouth full of food. I thought it was kind of strange that the hospital (somewhat rudely) asked folks who were not receiving treatment to leave because they did not have enough space in the waiting room. Our father was transferred to Holy Cross Hospital after being admitted to our local Inova hospital here in Virginia. We couldn't understand why he needed to go that far for care as sick as he was . But his doctor said this was the best place for him to receive the best ICU care as sick as he was. From the time he got transferred there he stayed 1 week in this hospital and the care was AMAZING. From the doctors to nurses to all the staff. Holy Cross Hospital saved our dad's life. From now on this is where we want our care. They listened to us and made us feel comfortable with all the decisions we had to make. Thanks to their team our dad is now back home doing well. I rarely post reviews, but my recent experience at Holy Cross in Silver Spring was so thoroughly positive, I feel I have to share. I was there for an outpatient surgical procedure from 6:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Every moment of my stay, I felt my care and comfort were being tended to, and in fact were everyone's only priority. From the prep team to the surgical team to the recovery team, everyone was pleasant, attentive, and caring, which not only made and kept me comfortable, but also made me feel fully confident that I was in good hands. I generally consider it a win if my needs are attended in a reasonably timely manner. The staff at Holy Cross, however, seemed expert at *anticipating* my needs, well exceeding my highest expectations. I am grateful to the many people involved in the effort. read more

I was recently taken to Holy Cross Hospital's ER by ambulance. The staff was efficient ordering tests, keeping me informed and checking on me regularly. My nurse, Victor, was wonderful as were all of the other staff I interacted with. After a full day of treatment they were able to get me stabilized enough to go home. I was given strict instructions to come back immediately if symptoms reoccurred and to see my family doctor within two to three days. I notice that most of the negative reviews were written in 2021 and 2022. I understand people were frustrated but it was an exceptional time, and not in a good way. with so many Covid hospitalizations and deaths. read more

An amazingly bad experience in patient care in the ER. My wife had a bad fall, lost consciousness, and lost a lot of blood around 830p. We scrambled to get her to the closest emergency room, at Holy Cross. The check in and getting the ekg and ct went smoothly, all done by 10am. She was in shock in pain and really a huge mess. But no one reviewed the cat scan until 8am the next morning when the new doctor came in. In fact she was offered no meds, no water, nothing, no one came to check on her. About 3am they moved her from the general waiting area to the private waiting area. But no movement until 8am. If she had actually had some bleeding, this would have gone critical and I get the distinct impression that no one there cared one iota. It was shocking how little they seemed to care about the patients. I won't go here again. I will note the daytime people seemed on the ball. After the shift change things were better. But it was too little too late imo. read more

First of all Kaiser sent me to the ER. Because of the clots I did chose this hospital because I've only know it as the Best hospital.. I got a rude awakening this hospital is horrible especially the Nursing Staff as well as the physicians. Kaiser thought I had a blood clot that's why I went there and I thought they would put me in a room they didn't say anything to me and I was placed in a hallway no one is checking on me no call button when I woke up I realize the wall was nasty where they had placed me . They lied to me about not having beds and I did take pictures of the empty beds I had to keep giving them my history several times no one was passing the information to the doctor the doctor kept saying she was sorry I bet you are!!!! The charge nurse doesn't know her job telling me she doesn't assign the beds I know for a fact she does. I've worked in a hospital for 43 years I know my job and hers too... I have pictures to show they were lying to me , the doctor gave me pain meds to keep me quiet. I arrived at 9:31pm and I was placed in a wheelchair and put in the waiting room for more than an hour.. I pay my insurance every two weeks and this is how I'm treated so disrespectful as a paying person. The only staff had some empathy for me the Radiology department everyone else had issues with me and I don't care. From 9:31pm to 6:45am they hadn't done much of anything. I pray I will never go back to holy cross hospital the whole set up is horrible. They did not treat me like a human being they put me in a hallway medicated me and just left. I'm so upset right now this place gets no stars from me. Didn't even show an ounce of compassion!!!!! No I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

**1 Star** I would give ZERO stars if I could. We arrived at the ER early in the morning, thinking we'd get prompt treatment. What a joke! After an easy intake, we were stuck in a HALLWAY - this place can't even handle basic patient loads. Then the endless waiting game with zero communication - unless WE constantly chased down the nurses. Finally, the doctor breezes in with useless non-answers. Turns out, the person we needed wouldn't be in until the evening. We could've AVOIDED this mess if someone was honest. To add insult to injury, the ER was totally chaotic and the staff seemed busier gossiping than actually caring for patients. The ONLY saving grace was the person who FINALLY arrived at 7 PM. They were understanding and actually solved our problem. But it's NOT worth a full day of frustration. If you value your time and health, steer clear of Holy Cross Hospital's ER. read more

I want to share with everyone about the terrible experience my wife had to go through at Holy Cross Hospital. First of all, waiting at this hospital is truly a terrible feeling. We had to wait more than a day for my wife's surgery, even though I fully understood that the hospital could face overcrowding. However, it was the lack of care and poor service that really surprised me from the medical staff who took care of my wife's room, except for the doctor and operating room nurse, who didn't even care about taking care of my wife. take care of my wife. My wife had to endure the feeling of discomfort and pain because no one cared about her wound or even changed her bandages all day long. . until she had to speak up. What's even sadder is the feeling of abandonment when I came to visit my wife and my daughter under 12 years old was not allowed in, I had to stand outside and only hope for the nurse's attention. However, their indifference and disinterest left me feeling disappointed and angry. Finally, I would like to emphasize that there is nothing commendable about the sanitary conditions at this hospital, the sheets, beds, and bathrooms stink like they have never been cleaned. Even when my wife was discharged from the hospital, I couldn't go up because I had to stay outsiders with my daughter who is under 12 years old. My wife still had to worry about changing her own clothes because there were no nurses or anyone to help. Holy Cross Hospital was a horrible place and I never want to go through an experience like that again. I hope that this review can help improve the service quality of this hospital in the future. I developed sepsis from salmonella I did not know I had. I was told to go to the hospital by the emergency room I was in and Holy Cross was the closest hospital to me. Although the nurses and other staff were amazing the infectious disease doctors were completely unhelpful and grossly incompetent in regard to my care. the doctor made me call around and get my own records for them to review. they then failed to actually reach out and get further results for my sensitivity test that would allow me to leave the hospital. the infectious disease doctors acted as if I was wasting their time. I was finally able to actually getting help only after continually complaining to the nurses to have the doctors stop in and actually talk with me. If I could rate this lower than a 1 I would. I would never in my life recommend this hospital for anyone if they know they will have to be admitted. read more

Holy Cross had no idea how to manage the patients in the system. My mom was admitted there last September (2024) and the service was so so. On January 27, we had to call 911 to take her to the hospital, the EMT told us they are taking her to Holy Cross so my dad went to emergency, ER told him that she is already in a room and gave him a room number. He went to that room to find out some other person was there, not her. It took us more than an hour to get the right answer. Come to find out EMT took her to Montgomery General but how can they gave her being admitted in Holy Cross hospital. Some of our friends also went to Holy Cross on Feb 1 to visit my mom thinking she is there, and the front desk still gave them the same room number at Holy Cross. It looks like they never discharged her from their system since September or their Database is not correct. I hope this only happened to us and not other family members. Also the Front Desk Clerks seem to be very rude to the people specially if they are foreign nationals. I hope Holy Cross change all this so that the status of this hospital can improve. read more

After having had many surgeries at holy cross. Holy cross has had me in the surgery schedule two months . After establishing preop work up, pt for two months , turning down employment to get a knee operation . They cancelled my knee operation one week before I was supposed to have the surgery done . I'm barely able to walk because of their stupidity at this hospital . Now I have to find a facility that will accept my insurance . Please make sure if have insurance from DC they accept it. The out of state Medicaid plan they will not accept but they will take your Medicare . They used to accept DC Medicaid but no longer accept it . Why not let people know early on when you run the insurance so people lives won't be messed up ., healthcare in this country isn't about care but money . This hospital has so much potential, however falls short in the building maintenance. my wife and I believe this hospital has become on the low level with the old cheverly PG hospital. The Pros: The nurses & doctors in general are compassionate and they gave us great care. The Cons: The building itself, specifically the maternity wing was in horrible shape and not maintained. Sure we're not expecting a stay at the Westin or even a Holiday Inn, but basic things like central AC, Sleeper couch without a major hole, or even a functioning clock I would expect out of a maternity wing. The Frustrating: I tried for 3 days to a function clock in our room. I got fed up and ordered a battery from Uber eats delivery and installed one myself. Verified the battery was indeed broken with tools in my trunk. For anyone that's had a baby, you know how important a clock is in the room. The Ugly: Nurse Elizabeth in maternity wing had a horrible attitude showing up to her shift. She didn't introduce herself or check up on our new born or mother for hours since the change of shift and when we called she showed up with an attitude like we're not important enough for her to deal with. Luckily there were many other nurses in the maternity wing that were awesome during our stay such as Mojee, Rosana, Kat, and Mary. read more

This review is mostly for the expecting mama's out there looking for hospital reviews in the time of Covid. Still this might be helpful for others. I spent several weeks here in August and September amid Covid - my first stay was when I had my baby and my second lengthy stay was a few weeks later for postnatal complications. I hope this lengthy review helps others out there, especially expecting moms, who are concerned about the hospital experience during a pandemic. Lets break it down! I've split it in two - general experience and then labor and delivery experience. IN GENERAL: Covid Precautions - I felt pretty safe here during both stays. I was tested for covid multiple times. My second stay here I was taken by ambulance from a Kaiser facility. They tested me for covid before leaving Kaiser urgent care as an extra precaution. All of the doctors and nurses were masked up to varying degrees. At the very least they had masks. Some also chose to wear face shields and the high tech ventilation masks. When it was just me in the room I was allowed to take my mask off. Whenever a nurse or doctor entered I had to put it on. Housekeeping came regularly. I had c-diff the second time around and was located in a section right next to the covid patients. For all of us everyone had to suit up in hazmat like scrubs before entering rooms. Our food was served with fully disposable materials including the tray itself. Rooms - All rooms are now singles which is definitely a plus. Not having to share a room makes the hospital stay a million times better. You feel much safer alone in your room during covid times. New wing rooms are a million times better than the old wing. I wish there wasn't such a disparity. Guests - The first time around I was allowed one guest because I was having my baby. The second time around no guests were allowed. Make sure you bring your phone/device chargers so you can stay in touch with friends and family. Food - Their food is much better compared to other hospitals. HUGE ISSUE THOUGH! The cafeteria hours suck!! They're open for lunch from 11:30-2pm and for dinner from 4:30-7pm. If you're a patient food is shut down at 6:30pm. They will not answer the phone at 6:31. If anyone wants food after 7pm here they're screwed. How they continue to get away with this I don't know. They say online they're open until 8pm. They're not! FOR THE PREGNANT LADIES: Covid Precautions/Masks in L&D - See above. They rapid test you once admitted. Once my test results came back the nurse said I didn't have to worry about wearing my mask. They don't test significant others so my partner had to wear his whenever a doctor or nurse entered the room. Totally understandable and not a problem. Overall I felt very safe in terms of covid when I gave birth here. Housekeeping was took care of the rooms and were in high demand. You might have to wait a bit longer for a room as a result. Guests - You're allowed one support person. They're not tested for covid so they have to wear masks. They're allowed to come and go. See above about food. Cafeteria hours really sucked for partner once baby was born. Epidurals - If you know from the start that you want an epidural make sure you ask for one ASAP. I was induced and then had HORRIBLE contractions for a solid five hours. I was begging for an epidural in the worst pain of my life. The anesthesiologist was set and ready but THEY DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH NURSES to move me to labor and delivery. I had to wait FIVE HOURS for an epidural because this hospital couldn't staff enough nurses. I later found out an epidural should have been available at the same time I was induced. HC dropped the ball on that - or at least the reddish haired fanny pack wearing spaz of a nurse whose name I will not mention dropped the ball. I finally got my epidural but shortly thereafter I heard the screams of women who didn't make it in time because there weren't enough nurses. Women are suffering here because this hospital can't get their staffing in check. FIX IT HC. Rooms - DO NOT let them take you to the overflow "pediatrics" floor after delivery. This floor hasn't been updated since like 1991. I stayed in 5 rooms during my labor stay and this was the worst by far. Stay on the standard post labor floor if you can. Nurses - Aside from the spazz mentioned above and one other nurse I had in L&D, the nurses here are incredible. The best of the best. I was in the hospital for seven days with complications after delivery. They knew how sucky my situation was and went above and beyond. Extra staff shout out - The transport people (especially Josh!) and the middle of the night take your blood people are perhaps the best employees in this entire hospital. I had to have middle of the night blood transfusions and then many subsequent middle of the night blood hooplas and let me tell you these techs were awesome. GREAT PEOPLE. My daughter and I came in to deliver her baby there a week ago and was met with sarcasm from the attending doctors. She didn't get a lot of prenatal care because of the lack of concern her OBGYN provided so she was criticized by the doctor and mocked for having a degree and was told well next time Ms. Forensic Scientist make sure you get prenatal care. I also received lack of care during her birth while trying to make sure her husband experienced the birth while attending to their 3 year old downstairs in the lobby. I kept telling them I was not video taping the birth but making sure her husband was on FaceTime and didn't miss it and I said to them the first baby was born so quickly he missed it and the smart mouthed doctor said to me well he should have been up here for this one. I guess they feel that people of color can be spoken to however they feel and we will not do anything about it but hopefully this review will allow others to be aware of the lack of empathy we received. As a doctor your first job is to care for your patient and keep your personal opinions to yourself. It is not your job to add your side notes or opinions to what your main job was (deliver my grand daughter safely and with care). I'm highly disappointed with the maternity experience especially since my daughter that was having her baby was delivered there 28 years ago. The attending staff amazing the delivery doctors go back and get a class on caring 101. I will definitely let all my colleagues within the county government know to be ready for smart mouth doctors if they ever have kids that need to be cared for on the maternity ward. read more
