Hollerbach's German Restaurant is located on the East First Street in Sanford. This downtown area is walkable and filled with shops and restaurants. Though I think this is the centerpiece of the area. Sausages, Schniztel, Spaetzel, Sauerkraut and so much more!!!!! All the German specialty foods are well represented on Hollerbach's menu. Since my dining companion and I we trying to save room for the crème puff dessert in the Hollerbach's German Market around the corner, we elected to split a meal. Two sausages (there were 4 to choose from), saurkraut and we substitute the default side for spaetzel with brown gravy. The meal was plenty filling for two adults at lunch. We experienced excellent service. This restaurant was busy, but we never felt like we were dismissed or forgotten. I'm just sad we didn't try more of the menu. But we were saving room for dessert. First, if you want to come here, make a reservation. There WILL be a line out the door and around the corner, which we bypassed and was seated immediately because we had a reservation. The ambiance is very immersive. You are transported to a German countryside in the middle of Octoberfest. There is dancing, singing, games, beer, and community. I ordered the schnitzel with the gravy, and the pickled cabbage as my side and it was delicious. I ate everything on my plate and was fully satisfied. This place is not for the small eater on a diet. My friends and I have done Das Boot and schnappski a couple times and the whole restaurant is looking at you and cheering you on. It's a lot of fun :) food is great! Authentic German Lunch with Great Service Yesterday we met our friends for our monthly lunch outing, and this time we chose Hollerbach's German Restaurant in Sanford. It turned out to be a great pick. They seated us in a big, open room -- no sound‑absorbing décor, but surprisingly, it never felt loud or echoey. We could talk comfortably the whole time. There's also a charming little German market next door where you can pick up groceries and specialty items. Our server, Rebecca, made the experience even better. She was upbeat, knowledgeable, and handled our group like a pro. When we told her each couple needed separate checks, she gave a playful wink and said, "I gotcha." She also made sure to check that I was okay with their unsweetened iced tea having a peach flavor before bringing it out. Small details like that go a long way. I ordered the Jäger Schnitzel, and the flavor was fantastic -- rich, savory, and comforting. The only downside was that it wasn't hot, more on the warm side, as if it had been waiting a bit. Still delicious. My spouse ordered the Sauerbraten, which looked great, though I thought the meat was a little dry even with the gravy. My goulash soup starter, however, was excellent. The place was busy, and I saw people waiting outside, so reservations are definitely a good idea. We all enjoyed our meals and the chance to catch up. The Black Forest cake is a must try! We came on the sun rail and took the trolley down town straight to here. Now this restaurant has a main dinning room, big bar on the side, market, and a merchandise shop. The main dinning room and bar are next door to each other and the market and merch shop are around the corner. We started at the main dining room for lunch. I ordered a hefeweizen beer, the beer comes in many sizes, and we shared a big pretzel. For my main i got the pork schnitzel. It came with a delicious side salad and bread roll. My husband loved his meal. The portions here are big. For dessert we got the Black Forest cake. It was amazing! I'm still thinking about it. The waitress was nice and knowledgeable. The place is decorated fun and the menu is printed on what seems like newspaper. They offer a beer in a big boot. The rule is it must be shared by four people it's 3 liters. It must be drank right away while standing. We saw some guys drink it. It was fun they changed and chugged. After we went next door to the bar and tried more German beers they have bottles or on tap. Wow! Wow! What an amazing place. We found it driving back from eating the other night. Super friendly hostess and an awesome server. The menus like a newspaper with history and great descriptions. The menu is a bit overwhelming but we ordered what we knew. He started with the pretzel and the mustard was the bomb. The cheese spread was also delicious but my favorite was the mustard. We were on the way to Disney when we were feeling hungry. Husband was craving German restaurant so luckily we found one! We found parking easily and were greeted immediately inside the restaurant. The restaurant was busy, lively, and felt cozy. There was happy hour specials($5 appetizers and beer) going on when we arrived so we decided to order off that menu. To do so, you do have to order at the bar so keep that in mind. We were led to the bar room and it was spacious and alot more quiet than the main dining area. Our server was attentive and made sure we were taken care of. We had the following: Pretzel with mustard and cheese: 7.5/10 - it was a bit salty but combined with the sweet mustard was delicious! Since it was the smaller version of their giant pretzel, it was only $5 and worth every penny! It was a pretty good size and enough to share between the both of us. I liked the cheese spread too but it was bit rich for me. The mustard was definitely our favorite dip! Potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream: 9/10 - this was by far my favorite appetizer. The potato pancakes were fried perfectly and the crispy edges were delightful! I didn't think I would enjoy apple sauce and sour cream together but it worked so well with the fried pancake. It cuts through the grease and adds a little sweetness. The portion size was hefty too for $5! Bratwurst with hot mustard: 8/10 - There were a variety of flavors we could choose from and I chose cajun since I love spicy flavors. The bratwurst was cooked perfectly and it was also cut into pieces for easy eating. For $5 you get a big bratwurst and some mustard. I wish it was a little spicier but nonetheless, it was juicy, flavorful, and had that signature snap of a great bratwurst. Jaeger schnitzel: 9/10 - my husband chose the veal and he said it's one of the best schnitzels he's ever eaten. I could see the joy in his face in each and every single bite. It came with warm, pickled cabbage and spaetzle. The schnitzel and spaetzle were covered in this absolutely delightful gravy. I had a bite of everything and it was divine! My husband has lived in Germany and he said it was very reminiscence of his time there. It was a pretty hefty portion too and I knew he loved it when he cleaned his plate completely haha Apple streusel: 9/10 - The apples combined with the flakiness of the pastry and hints of cinnamon was like a warm, cozy hug on a winter day. I cannot explain to you how yummy this was. The pastry itself was light, airy, and each bite made us smile. Definitely try this dessert out! German beer: 9/10 - Husband enjoyed his beer very much and I took a sip. It tasted pretty light and not too heavy. Overall, we will definitely be coming back if we're in the area. My most recent visit was to watch a game during the World Cup, and it was super busy!! But had a great time with everyone watching the game! Hollerbach's is a true and wonderful representation of German culture, sat in the quaint downtown of Sanford. I'm not a huge fan of German cuisine, but even I could appreciate just how good and authentic this place is. Oh, and they have root beer on tap and it is the BEST root beer I have ever had, maybe will ever have except actually in Germany. I've been more than once but this most recent time was the first time I was here when the musicians were singing and playing. This is a vibe. Take your friends, get a boot, enjoy the beer and the exciting times. We had a while before a show around the corner so we took our time and even played some cards in between an app and our meal. A spot I've been wanting to try for years, and I was so happy to find that it was worth the wait! The day I went, there was a line outside that looked like it would take forever, but for a party of 2 it probably only took around 20 minutes to get a table. For larger parties, they will take your phone number and notify you when your table is ready so that your group can wander the shops nearby or grab a drink at The Lodge bar (part of Hollerbach's). There is a ton of seating both inside and outside, and at certain times there is live German music inside which is broadcasted outside on TV and speakers! One thing I was really impressed by was their ability to substitute sides. I substituted both of my sides for no extra charge. I highly recommend the German potato salad (warm kartoffelsalat) instead of French fries for a way more traditional schnitzel experience. The cucumber salad (gurkensalat), egg noodles with gravy (spätzle mit soße), and sauerkraut (sauerkraut) were all delightful as well! We arrived on a Friday night around 6pm and were told it would be a 40 minute wait. Only 15 minutes later I received a text that our table was ready! They were extremely fast in being able to accommodate us. The restaurant is very open and noisy, but that's all part of the appeal. It's just fun! They had live musicians, and every so often they would get everyone involved in a toast. It's very interactive and entertaining. Despite it being very busy, our server was friendly and attentive. Drinks came out quickly, and the food was hot and fresh. The server even brought my son's meal out in advance, which is always appreciated when dining with kids. The food was just delicious. This review would have been higher if it wasn't for the poor service! We had a reservation and the host had trouble finding my name until she motioned the iPad towards me and I found it. We were sat and waited +10 minutes with no greeting and a waitress came over asking if we had been helped yet and we said no, she took our drink orders and disappeared. We told her to please bring out the other meals as we were STARVING by that point. The manager came over and apologized and our food finally came out. My dad got what I think was lamb and it fell off the bone, all 3 of our schnitzel was so yummy. The food, excellent, would definitely come back. Even when the restaurant was dead it took FOREVER to get our food and the service really turned our whole party off. Hollerbach's is a very popular restaurant in Sanford, and there is good reason why! If you are looking for German food in a very lively atmosphere, look no further. Totally forgot to get a picture, but I definitely recommend starting with the Riesenbreze. It is a fluffy pretzel served with two delicious dips: a sweet mustard and Obazda. It's not a trip to Hollerbach's without one of the pretzels! Their menu has lots of German specialities and a wide variety of options. They have delicious wurst options, and I also really enjoy the Kase Spatzle. Honestly, everything we have tried on their menu has been delicious. Some options are fairly pricy, but they are good portions. Of course, there are plenty of beer options and you can even do the Das Boot. The atmosphere inside Hollerbach's is super special. It is loud and a bit chaotic, but also lots of fun. This won't be a good spot if you are looking for an intimate setting, but between people doing Das Boot, live entertainment, and the communal tables, there is a lot going on. If you are heading here on the weekend, be prepared for a bit of a wait to be sat and likely a bit of a wait once you have been seated. We were here on a Saturday night and waited about 35 minutes for a table and it took over 30 minutes to get our food once we ordered. We stopped by Hollerbach's for our 2nd visit to watch a friendly soccer match and had a great time. We enjoyed the polka "half time show" in the German themed space. They're almost always packed, with a line out the door, so I recommend making a reservation ahead of time if you can, especially if you have a big group. If you're seated in the Lodge, the atmosphere is super cool and rustic! It honestly felt like we were in a Bavarian tavern. If you get a table in the main room, it's kinda bare and basic looking, but you have a better view of the live music. No matter where you sit though, the service is cheery and you're gonna have a good time. The food here is hearty and delicious. Don't come here if you're on a diet -- everything is pretty much meat, potatoes, or carbs (there are a select few veggie side dishes though). They also have some pretty good vegetarian dishes too. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The Hungarian Goulash was flavorful and hearty, my Rubenstein was amazing (I loved the corned beef), and the Black Forest Cake was one of the best I've had (it was rich and fluffy). Our third visit, and consistently amazing! We love the atmosphere here and attended for a friend's birthday to party! Next door this the store had coffee and I got a Dubai chocolate and have to say it was the best coffee I've ever had in my life! I got a muffin to go with it and I enjoyed it very much. A great little special they were having two they have all kinds of meats and cheeses and an extensive beer collection. You must go to the market! As far as lunch it was a little difficult because I am gluten-free and I never found anything I absolutely loved. The waitress that seated us was visibly annoyed when we asked to sit near the back instead of the front, but the visit got better from there. They had many varieties of pilsners and German wheat beers to choose from- the Erdinger Hefe was smooth and refreshing. Our food took about 45 minutes to come out, which was annoying since the restaurant wasn't close to full. When the food did come out, it was great. the Eisbein- giant pork shank- which was delicious and filled me up (I'm 6'3). Their dishes come with a lot of sauerkraut as well. They had live polka music, which was fun- the performers got the audience involved and let us take a selfie with them. I am still confused about a few things (and one of them is how to pronounce any of the meals here), but overall I still give it five stars. Long tables, entertainment, loud, pretty much what you expect by the description. The Riesenbreze - a Gigantic Bavarian pretzel served with sweet mustard and Obazda, a savory spread made with cream cheese, onions, sweet paprika, beer and Gemütlichkeit - was amazing. One of the better pretzels I have had anywhere. The beer comes in various sizes -- from normal to, to be shared sizes. For me the best part of the experience was the Eisbein - This skinless, bone-in pork shank is one of the most flavorful and tender cuts of meat you'll ever taste! Our delicious pan-seared Eisbein is served with Sauerkraut and Heaven & Earth potatoes. Yes, the meat is really that good. However, I was never a fan of sauerkraut, and the Heaven and Earth potatoes -- yes, I managed to not like those either. Just give me the meat next time! Service was there whenever needed. They helped match a first-timer's questions in the right direction for an outstanding meal. Now, another question: what is that quiet place off the restrooms and also accessible from the outside? Maybe you can come here and skip the entertainment? They do have places for very large groups, too which could be something to consider if you are in search for one. read more

We went on a Sunday. Apparently they have live music from 1-4 pm. We were seated pretty quickly. There was a German band playing. Fun atmosphere. The girls wore traditional outfits. The service was great. The food was delicious. We would definitely go back. read more
