I love Hollenbeck Palms. From the day Mom and her two cats moved in, she's told me about the new friends she continues to make, people who lead exceptional lives and who have become friends to me and our family, joining us for lunch, dinner or the theatre on premises or off. Hollenbeck Palms is itself a beautiful place, with space to stroll the gardens or watch the sun set behind downtown. There are multiple daily concerts, lectures and movies on prem and off, although Mom has been partial to the dance classes and personal training in the gym. Off premises, Hollenbeck is adjacent to some great neighborhood restaurants, and just across the river from restaurants and galleries in the Arts District, as well as the L.A. Music Center and Disney Hall. As a family, we have bonded with Jose, the bus driver, from the times Mom has invited more friends to lunch and a show than we can fit in our cars. When needed, there is a full range of medical and psychological support for both residents and families, from assisted residential living (Mom), to memory care, exceptional skilled nursing and on-site physicians. Because Hollenbeck Palms has been operated as a not-for-profit enterprise with a board of directors made up of residents and their families for well over 100 years, my family has been able to afford a quality of life for Mom better than anywhere else, and we have not worried that would change should we run into financial difficulty. However, more than anything else, I am constantly surprised by the kindness of every person who works there. My husband and I moved here about six months ago. We were ready to leave behind the maintenance of a tri-level home and to live a more carefree lifestyle. After visiting several retirement facilities in the Los Angeles, Glendale, and Pasadena area we felt that Hollenbeck Palms was the place for us. People ask us how we like it here and our reply is "What's not to like? It is like living in a five star hotel. We have a lovely apartment in Magnolia Court where we can just walk down the hall to a lovely Bistro for breakfast or lunch and also to a sports lounge where we enjoy playing games when our family and friends comes to visit. We also have on campus an elegant restaurant. The grounds are amazing! It's hard to believe that all this is within a couple of miles of Downtown Los Angeles. Our gated community is lovely. We are in independent living with the freedom of having a car and still doing activities with friends outside of Hollenbeck Palms. However, we have observed how caring the Assisted Living nurses are towards those who need more care. We feel confident that when we need more care we will be in good hands. The staff is very attentive and courteous. Every employee seems to sincerely care about the residents and our needs. The residents are all very welcoming and the activities are plenty. We especially enjoy the visiting singing groups and other performers. We moved into Hollenbeck Palms five weeks ago. At age 77, we wanted to leave behind the responsibility of a house and yard, and be in a more protected environment, with every possible kind of help available. We are so pleased with our decision. The grounds are gorgeous, the staff extremely kind and helpful, and the other residents welcoming. My husband discovered here the mother of one of his former kindergarten students, or rather she discovered him. The food is spectacular, many rungs above what we sampled at several for-profit, corporate senior living facilities. Every meal has more than a dozen offerings, the soups are fabulous, the vegetables delicious. Fish is served several times a week. Though I am not a vegan, I tried the vegan bratwurst, and it was excellent. There are many vegetarian and gluten-free choices. But if you want beef, bacon, hot dogs, sausage, and fried potatoes, and ice cream, you can have that, too.The young, extremely accommodating servers are adored. My husband now enjoys a far broader diet than before. Every possible holiday or occasion is celebrated, often with musical entertainment. The 115+ year-old chapel is known for its stained glass, pipe organ and acoustics. In addition to the fitness classes and activities offered by staff, residents have organized interest groups - gardening, putting, Scrabble, etc. Volunteers produce a residents newsletter and run the monthly bazaar, a rummage sale. We had to place my mother in Hollenbeck's Memory Care unit. Prior to that, she lived with me. At my house, all she did was want to watch TV and even with encouragement would not want to do activities. Now that she is at Hollenbeck, I am amazed that she is actively participating in exercise, games, and art activities. In other facilities we visited, residents were sitting in hallways by themselves napping. At Hollenbeck, I never see this. Residents are always with several caregivers and the activity's coordinator, Ryan, who is amazing. He is so kind, encouraging, and constantly works on the mental stimulation of residents. Zhana Dubin is wonderful also. She was patient with all the questions I had before we decided to place her at Hollenbeck. Whenever I had issues with my mother, Zhana did her best to provide the best situation for her. I also want to add that placing her in a facility was very difficult. I was guilt-ridden, but knew I could no longer care for her myself with her advanced dementia. Hollenbeck also provided families with an expert/counselor specializing in demetia for us to zoom with. They know the residents well and look after each of them with amazing care. Our sister lives in the Assisted Living section and her transition was as smooth as it could have been. My mom has been living here since 2022 and it's one of the most amazing decisions she ever made. The quality of care, attention and support is phenomenal. The campus is a beautiful oasis in a busy downtown replete with ample natural beauty in gardens, fountains and walkways as well as clean, spacious, fresh smelling and inviting places to eat, live, recreate. Whenever we visit mom and have to say goodbye the best feeling of security and comfort is present because we know she is well cared for, loves her community, home and friends. Our parents have stayed at Hollenbeck Palms for 8 months in the memory care. The staff is caring and compassionate. They spend time with the residents getting to know them. In addition, HP takes extra steps to make the residents feel safe and secure. My mom, who has Alzheimer's Disease, was upset because she believed the other residents were stealing from her. The staff put a keypad lock on her door with a basic code. My mom feels more secure now. In addition, when my dad was sleeping a lot we were concerned. HP sent a psychiatrist to meet with him in his room to do an assessment. They have a gerontologist on the premises who is now my parents' primary care physician. X-Rays, vaccines and some medical appointments are done on the premises. They also have made a dementia expert available to family members for a dementia support group. Took a tour as a favor for a relative. Courteous friendly helpful staff. Various living quarters to meet various needs. Clean and organized. Lovely koi pond, gym, small golf course, quiet lounge area with library, activity room with line dancing, yoga, tai chi, arts and crafts, game room for card playing, on site cafe as well as luxurious dining room where daily meals are served. Gorgeous on site chapel where mass is performed weekly. Lounge with piano and music activities. So much to offer along with medical needs met. Memory unit being built. I got a bad feeling immediately even though the facility is very nice and hotel quality. They immediately started focusing on finances and other extremely personal financial inquiries. I understand they do not want to waste their time seeing families who do not qualify to have their senior parents placed there, but a little compassion is necessary in this field. I later called back to address this with someone and was placed on hold for a very long time before a person named "Shawna" came on the phone to address my issues. The rudeness continued, complete lack of professionalism, and would not let me even finish speaking. This is unfortunate but makes me wonder how our seniors are being treated when family is not there to protect and witness this behavior? Our family is very solvent and we were not there to pretend we had assets we don't. After I did a little bit of research, I discovered I was not the first one to be treated like this when inquiring about their facility. Our family ended up choosing another retirement residence after we had more than one visit to see how the employees interact with the residents. Hollenbeck Palms may want to invest in some interpersonal training for their "upper end" employees. read more

My Mom lived here at Hollenbeck Palms for 6 years. She loved it. Moving to Hollenbeck Palms was the best thing she did for herself and for us, her children. Hollenbeck Palms gave my Mom the VIP treatment throughout her life there. She started in the Independent Living quarters in a one bedroom, one bath, plus balcony unit. Her apartment was truly beautiful, and grand! The 10 feet ceilings made the place bigger than usual. The small kitchen was perfect for having friends over.The staff and service at Hollenbeck Palms is like living in a concierge boutique hotel. My Mom had laundry, tailoring, mail services as well as numerous excursions . They have weekly trips to Costco, Target, Trader Joe's, etc. My Mom made new friends with the other residences as well as all the staff. Everyone always seemed happy when I saw them working and I later learned second generations work here because they are well treated. This says a lot of Hollenbeck Palms and how they take care of their staff. What I loved about my Mom's apartment was the staff, the buildings and the food! The main dining hall is like a country club, where one must dress for meals. No jeans or shorts allowed. Our family loved coming here for Thanksgiving and Christmas 12 meals. I know you must think I am joking, right? Tasty food at a retirement home??? I am not kidding. The main dining hall always served delicious meals. Upstairs in this building is an old fashion ice cream parlor with an outstanding view of downtown LA. Last year, my Mom collapsed and she was moved to the 24 hour Nursing building. Hollenbeck Palms moved everything out of her independent apartment with ease. They allowed us to divide items to Keep, Donate and Toss. I didn't have to lift a finger. I only used post its. They stored everything for my Mom until she was well enough to move to the Assisted Living building, which she did for 3 weeks. That apartment was also quite nice, and the nurses checked in on her throughout the day, and escorted her to the dining hall for meals. My Mom lived in the 24 hour nursing building her last year of life and I was able to learn quite a lot. The building will be remodeled and updated within this year. This is a good thing. Every staff member who works at the 24 hour facility is an angel. They truly care for each patient. I got to know them quite well. My Mom had Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and was driven to and from all her doctor's appointments. Mrs. Jackson coordinates all the medical appointments for all the residents as just one of her responsibilities. I live too far away and work full time, so I was not able to attend the doctor's appointments. When I needed to speak to the nurse, or the doctors who oversees the residents, it was easy. I always felt my questions and concerns for my Mom were taken seriously. Hollenbeck truly was on my Mom's side and rallied for her whenever she was transferred to the hospital, White Memorial, just one mile away. My Mom loved living here and every time she was at White Memorial Hospital, she yearned to go back to her "home" at Hollenbeck Palms. I know my Mom will be missed by the staff, as she brought a smile to all. Personally, I couldn't have done any of the things Hollenbeck Palms did for my mom her last 6 years of her life. Hollenbeck Palms has different levels of living for the retirees. My Mom lived in them all and each level, I felt she was truly loved and well taken care of. It is a more exclusive part of the dining at Hollenbeck Palms, my retirement home. It is more intimate and less formal than the main dining room, and it's nice if four people want to get together instead of being in a big crowd. The best part about it is that they make everything for you right that minute, so everything is piping hot and to your specifications. And they will make practically anything you want that is feasible. Their Garden Burger is very good--I like it with nothing but mustard, smooshed down a little and cut into two halves. If you eat with me, I'll insist you take a bite at some point, so if you don't like people touching your food, ask for the first bite. I don't mind your fingers on my bun. I'm also a big fan of their French Toast, or anyone's French Toast for that matter. And their coconut cream pie, and all their desserts, are palatable. They operate on off hours, more so than the dining room, which gives you a chance if you are early or late so that you can get your meals and have something hot when you are ready. I love that they fix everything last minute for you, because sometimes I'm napping or watching the judges and I can't get downstairs for the formal meal seating. Everybody who is late for meals eats at the Bistro, we are the late-for-dinner club. My husband loves to eat, so he is happy wherever he is at. The walk is not too far from my apartment, but it is a walk. Along the way I get to see the pretty grounds of Hollenbeck. They have a Romeo and Juliet statue in the rose garden that is very beautiful. The Bistro is where I bring my grandchildren, so they can order what they want. They make a good hamburger, which is what my kids like. But even if you are eating a hamburger, I will make you take a bite of my Garden Burger, so be prepared. My mother has been here since November and she loves it here. She lives in the main building and has assisted care for memory loss. The food and service here is phenomenal. My mom went from 84lbs to 95lbs in five months here! They have activities in morning and afternoon on weekdays and have field trips for their residents. Hollenback Palms has brought out the social butterfly in my mom. The place is quite formal like a country club with a dress code. My mom lives to put on a full face of make up and plan out her wardrobe each day and for each event! They have a great putting green that overlooks DTLA and my mom's room has a DTLA skyline view. You can see Hollywood Hills and the Hollywood Sign from the formal dining room that has waiter service during lunch. There is another building with a view of Hollenback Park. Whether a person is declining, physically, mentally or still independent, Hollenback Palms has a program and building for everyone. This is a great facility for a person with memory loss. A resident can charge anything from their sundry store, cafe or beauty salon to their room just like a hotel. I clicked Accepts Insurance. They accept Long Term Care insurance. Mom has John Hancock. There is a big population of Japanese people here. My mom has both Japanese speaking friends and English speaking friends here. Had lunch here a few times with my grandparents. What a treat to have this place available to provide a spot for small groups (2-4) to have great conversations with a good meal. They will offer to modify anything they can, unless it's just not feasible. In this rare case, they will work with you to get you where they can feasibly get you. My mom has lived here for several years. I have visited frequently to check in on her and make sure she is happy. She just turned 87. I can say from an insider's perspective, the Hollenbeck Palms staff is first rate. They are caring, professional, involved, present, responsive and top-notch. The facilities, apartments, and grounds are gorgeous and sprawling, meticulously manicured. If you are shopping around for a place for your loved ones, I highly recommend this one. Before Covid pandemic, my mom was active with many of the group activities, especially the exercise classes. HP has been careful with lockdown protocols, but my mom said classes are to resume. The social interaction was key to her happiness, and I am glad HP is taking steps to safely resume some of these activities. I visited for their Christmas celebrations in 2019, and the food was delicious! With live music programs, field trips, movie nights and basic core services, this place is fabulous! read more

The Bistro dining room is a beautiful dinning room, style Louis xv, for elegant dinning in this beautiful retirement home. This is a great place for somebody to spend the last years of their life. THis retirement home is very nice elegant , with beautiful gardens and a great view. The food is delicious. They have lots, and lots of activities, classes, excersicing, excursions, .They keep you busy all the time and take care of you 24 hours a day. All your needs are met, you don't have to worry for anything, just for breathing.. The only inconvinience is too expensive to live there. you need tons, and tons of money to live there, and the cost raise yearly. so if you have to have a wanderful retirement you have to get rid of all your assets. and your heirs don't get anything, this is terrible. .. read more

My family had the exact opposite experience with Hollenbeck Palms as "Jon Z". I had 3 grandparents who lived at Hollenbeck for a combined total of 7 years and each spent time in Hollenbeck's skilled nursing facility. They were discharged from Medicare and skilled nursing only when they reached the point that therapy would no longer improve them. They never received anything but professionalism from nursing, the medical director and all other staff. They also received the highest level of care in independent living, assisted living and they all loved living at Hollenbeck. They were all made to feel that they were a part of a family. read more

I grew up in Boyle Heights and love this place. As a teenager i took a tour of the grounds and discovered the wonderful ice cream parlor and the amazing trees. The trees i learned were brought in from the rain forest so the grounds if they are still the same are amazing.. My uncle and my colleague's mother both live at Hollenbeck Palms, both in Skilled Nursing, and we are thrilled with the service and care they receive. The staff is most compassionate and understanding and the Medical Director is top-notch. Although my uncle has complicated physical issues, they never make him feel like a burden and always motivate him to do his exercises. Everyone from the physical therapists to the Activity Director to the nurses is devoted to their patients and it shows. There is regular communication with the family regarding my uncle's status and we've come to feel as if we're indeed one extended, large family. I wish I could give Hollenbeck Palms Negative stars!!! Roaches run across bedroom floors, they somehow get by without being handicapped accessible. the bathrooms are so small a child can barely turn around and are NOT accessible to people in walkers or wheelchairs. The exterior doors are not handicapped accessible, no automatic openers. The nursing staff is a joke one nurse to 18 patients. They give you mis information and do not follow through on a regular basis!!! The nursing director has an ego that is out of control and this is her Fifedom!! The director bows to her and really is just a tool unable to think or act on his own!! I recommend you think long and hard and then look hard because all these places are hell...This is just a rundown, antiquated sad, sad, sad place; that is my opinion based on my experience with Hollenbeck. Unlike the other reviews this one is by a real end user and not a staffer writing in to counteract the negative press. read more
