one of the hardest things in life is to reach the age of, let's just say, 75+. things start changing, starting with the challenge to do or maneuver quite the way you once could. for our family, that's where pasadena highlands came (and continues to come) in. was it easy - absolutely not!!!! was it a good move - absolutely!!!!! under the leadership of kay cano, she and her staff provide our aunt (a resident for over 13 years) and our parents (residents for over 4 years) with a wonderful environment. from a family member who was looking for the best place to accommodate our loved ones, i highly recommend pasadena highlands to anyone contemplating a move to a senior-living community. read more

I can't speak to being a resident, but I can say that this business is menace to the neighborhood. Their maintenance people drop trash in the street, at one point there was what looked like sewage running all the way down the street every morning. They regularly have semis idling right outside mine and my neighbor's houses for hours per week. I asked them to have the trucks shut down due to my severe asthma. This was ignored. Any potential residents should understand that there is a ton of noise/back up beeps, idling trucks every day, all before 7am. To sum up, this company doesn't care about their neighbors and I'm concerned about how they may treat their residents. read more

We have friends who moved into the Highlands after the fires. They are very happy to be there, surrounded by a great staff and other residents. The only negative about living there for them seems to be the very limited washing and drying machines - only one per floor! So my friend has to plan a 4am trip during the week and avoid more crowded hours. That's way too few washers, and one was recently not working so the entire floor had to use another floor's machine. I think there is room for at least a second machine. If this could be changed, a 5 star would be appropriate from listening to them. read more

The Highlands took in my father with open arms after the Eaton fire. Cynthia Leon was great to work with. She was friendly, kind, thoughtful and very helpful. DO NOT TAKE YOUR FAMILY HERE. My aunt aspirated on food from one of the "caretakers" who works here - and it wasn't even identified until I visited later that day. If I hadn't gone by that day, my aunt would have died with food on her mouth and tongue, one eye glued shut from pus that wasn't cleaned, and with ants in her bed. New owners are DISGUSTING. In addition to the horrible care provided, they also tried to upsell my dad on a bed in their new memory care unit, even though she was 102, at the end of her life and never had any previous memory problems. They even went so far as to use a scarcity marketing tactic - "There's only one bed left, and we REALLY want to make sure she gets it!" SICK. read more

My mother (Mollie) was fiercely independent at 98 years old, but Mollie had taken a couple of falls, and it was time for assisted living. I thank God every day that we found Pasadena Highlands for Mollie as it was absolutely perfect in every respect. The social element gave Mollie new life as she put on her pearls and hat to "have lunch with the girls" every day. She had her favorite pancakes and coffee every morning and Highlands provided everything Mollie needed in every respect. We turned to Highlands for increased care as her health faded and ultimately to hospice for the end of her life at Highlands. Highlands became family to her and to us, and I do not have words to express the gratitude that we all have. The Caregivers and entire team are world class. My recognition and grateful thanks especially to Kay Cano, Marie Ann Brooks, Cynthia Leon, Maria Alarcon and Adrienne Hurd for their leadership in this exceptional community. Thank you to Marina and the entire front office staff and to Krystal and all the caregivers. Nothing can take away all the worry from having an aging parent, but we had great peace in knowing that Highlands could handle anything that might arise. Words cannot convey how grateful our family sign to the staff of Pasadena Highlands for the time my father spent there as a resident. The facility was beautiful, with a warm, caring vibe and a clean, pleasant, modern environment. The staff and the Elite Care experience was extraordinary and well worth the expense! Everyone from Kay, the Executive Director, to Cynthia and Jeanine in marketing, Marie, the head of health services who spent so much time with our family, to Stefan in medication management, to Ricardo and Kim who were part of Dad's caregiver and med tech team, to Maria in the billing office - went above and beyond to show compassionate care and kindness to my father and family. Despite the ups and downs, my mom has found the perfect place. She needs some memory assistance but is fiercely independent. Thank God we found the moments in time (MIT) program here. Very disorganized. I get a different story any time I call or visit the front desk regarding work orders and transportation.

Lovely facility with great amenities. The staff is caring and attentive. They know all residents by name and greet them with warmth and concern. I have had too many miscommunications with the front desk. There is one person in particular who has been disrespectful to me. In addition, this person has repeated confidential instructions to my sister which I had given concerning her care. I did NOT give these instructions to the front desk but the person clearly had heard them from someone. This person also told my sister that I had gotten angry with her which was also not the case. I appreciate the understanding of the administration with regard to my sister and her small, yippping pup so much! This has been a comfort for my sister. The Admissions Director and the med techs, especially Tanisha, are great. They are always very kind and loving to my sister. I also feel supported by them, as my sister's "person". This support is so appreciated by those of us who are the residents' "people". Of course, primary focus in these situations should be on the residents. Those of us are are "their people" are dealing with the emotional struggle of having to have our loved ones live in assisted living/memory care. My sister has now been at Highlands for 5 months. Except with a few issues, all is well. read more

Mom has lived at the Highlands for over 4 years. She has a lovely one bedroom apartment with a fifth floor view of the mountains. Initially, Mom was able to get around with just her walker. She went down to the dining room for her meals and activities. The food is very good considering it is prepared in masse for senior citizens with ever changing appetites and needs. Two entree options are presented with the "back of the menu" offering a variety of options from sandwiches, salads to deli meals to chicken choices. The friendly wait staff knows the residents by name and often bring the beverage of choice and favorite desserts without being asked. The caregivers go out of their way to establish rapport and kindness. This is a high turnover position across the industry yet The Highlands hires, trains and supports an incredible team of conscientious and professional caregivers. They truly care and connect with their residents. Mom is now bedbound and requires assistance with meals and liquids. Mom's "team" stops by to give her a warm washcloth for her face, sips of juices and a warm hello in between their regular assignment of feeding and cleaning mom throughout the day. She is cleaned and moisturized regularly and has never had as much as a rash. My sister and I are there five days a week for all day visits and companionship. The caregivers are part of the family. Because of my regular visits I am able to witness the quality of care they provide day and night. The residents are offered regular outings to restaurants, theater, nearby attractions, parties and celebrations in the Highlands garden. The list of activities is much longer. There is so much more I could share... my trust and respect for the leadership and supervisory staff gives me great comfort. Mom deserves the best, she is my treasure. When I needed to find a memory care facility for my husband, a friend recommended Pasadena Highlands. Lucky us! The quality of the staff is wonderful... caring, hard working, and patient under what are at times very difficult circumstances. Over the six months we have been at 'the Highlands,' we have come to truly appreciate the work that goes into creating such a lovely sense of community: from the myriad activities available, to the residents' garden, to the upbeat vibe and energy. The building itself is a bit dated, but recent work on it shows that there is an effort to gradually bring it up to speed. The food, while not "gourmet," is delicious and the head chef is very accommodating. I feel so fortunate to have found a safe, loving environment for my husband where I am welcome to visit whenever I wish, which I do almost every day! read more

We moved both my parents to the Pasadena Highlands nearly 4 years ago when their health started declining. We wanted them to be able to stay together in the same room since they were married for 62 years. This was absolutely possible at the Highlands to do. Also, for my parents to keep their personal furnishings from home was a nice bonus too. We first moved my parents to the 8th floor - then moved them to the 4th floor when a little more care was needed - to finally the "Memory Focus Care" unit on the 1st floor last year, where my parents needed the maximum care. In all 3 moves, the Highlands coordinated with the family the movers and helped my parents adjust smoothly to their new rooms - which change isn't always easy for elderly people. In all levels of care they received at the Highlands, they were treated and respected by all the caretakers and the food was always delicious, which is very important too. The social outings and holiday events are wonderful and family is always welcome to attend everything. Unfortunately, my Mom recently passed last month (May 2019). Pasadena Highlands, especially the director Laura Sanchez and her entire Focus staff, were so compassionate, caring and truly became our 2nd family during this difficult time for our family. They made sure my Mother was comfortable and pain-free during her final transition. Laura took care of all the hospice coordination when the time came. This was truly appreciated by my entire family! My Dad is still living at Pasadena Highlands and we have no plans to move him to another place. We trust the Pasadena Highlands, love their entire staff and truly know they are taking care of my Dad like he's their own family member! I know this is more than a job to them! My advice to you - if you put your loved one at the Pasadena Highlands (or looking at other places), I know it's not an easy decision, but remember to trust your gut and stay involved with their care. You'll be able to appreciate the caretakers better and you'll be able make some wonderful lasting memories in their new home! read more

Grateful for Pasadena Highlands. Nurse Laura and every member of her caregiver and MedTech team are experts and angels. Not only have they given my mom excellent care for the last five years, but they also treat her as a member of their family. They treat me like family too. I love them all, and rest easy knowing mom is in their care. In addition, their building is clean, inside and out. The apartments are large, filled with light, and have beautiful views. There are plenty of activities, an onsite hair salon, theatre, and a large dining room with picture windows of the gardens. Chefs prepare delicious food. I've eaten there myself several times. When I see residents and staff, we always smile at each other with our masks on these days. What a gift to have Pasadena Highlands and all they offer. read more

My mother spent the last two years at the Pasadena Highlands. She unfortunately passed last month. However, my hat goes off to the wonderful staff who cared for her. During this pandemic there have been some horror stories about assisted living facilities. The Pasadena Highlands staff went out of their way to implement infection control procedures long before the stay mandates were issued. As a result, to my knowledge no residents were affected by the virus. Cleanliness, food management and medications are all well handled. Mom wasn't engaged in many of the activities, but before the virus there were a wide variety offered to engage the residents. We moved my parents (then in their late 80s) to Pasadena Highlands seven years ago when a health crisis meant they could no longer live on their own. As my mom said, "If you can't live in your own home, Highlands is a great place to be." Highlands personnel cared for them in assisted living until my mom passed in 2019, then helped us know when it was time, more recently for my dad to move to Memory Care. He was very happy there and when it was time for him to go, they brought in hospice and made sure his passing was a peaceful one and that we were kept informed throughout. I highly recommend Highlands for both more active seniors and for those who need a higher level of care. Pasadena Highlands has been home for my mother for over two years. She went in with Assisted Living help, but two months ago she was transitioned into the memory care or "Focus Care" unit and has made the transition with ease. She is well cared for and there is open communication with the staff. Changes in her health are relayed in a timely manner. I'm impressed with how lovely Mom looks when I visit. Her hair is well groomed and she often has a fresh manicure! The entire staff is wonderful to work with. All are so caring! All my questions are answered. Laura Sanchez is awesome. The entire facility is fresh and welcoming. The dining room is like a fine restaurant and the food is delicious. I recommend Pasadena Highlands if you are considering a change of living arrangements either for yourself or a loved one. read more

My mom was here for two and a half years and really loved it. The staff is overall wonderful. The food is great, with lots of options. They have a lot of activities to do and take residents out for excursions. They have a doctor who comes weekly and checks on residents as needed. They have an exercise room, beauty salon, library, cafe/reading room, home theatre, and billiards room which they all keep clean and nice looking. The rooms are very nice with plenty of space and lovely private balconies. Outside there is a beautiful green space with tall trees and a gardening area. The facility is quite large but for us, it gave my mom a lot of people to get to know and lots of activities to choose from. Even with its size, however, the staff - caregivers, dining room waitstaff, receptionists, maintenance people, medtechs, et al - definitely get to know the residents personally. In fact, the biggest plus of this place was that everyone here is very welcoming. When my mom moved in, they had a welcome committee connect with her and everyone there says hello and have smiles on their faces. read more

I am beyond amazed at the level of passion and guidance he provided throughout this new phase of our lives. We came from an extremely difficult place and I was very lost. His knowledge and experience found us the perfect placement for her and as soon as she arrived you could see how much she was looking forward to living there. I am very grateful for everything Alex and I can't thank you enough. The Pasadena Highlands is a very special place. The units have a great view, the service is amazing, and they have amazing programs specific to the resident's needs. It is very social and community oriented. The type of care can be tailored to work for your loved one and the flexibility of service was one of the elements of their business that really impressed me. Above all, the staff operates as a family and I have never seen a group of professionals work together so seamlessly. They all really care for their resident's well-being and comfort. I had high hopes when I left my $500 fully refundable deposit at this retirement facility. Several days later I was advised the owner was unwilling to make my requested modifications to the apartment I selected. So I asked for the return of my deposit. It was never sent. It was already cashed. Over a 30 day period, I made three separate requests to Mari Markel, their sales representative. Lots of excuses but no check. Today I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. When I receive my refund, I will post the info and the length of time it took to receive it. read more

Really, I'm not sure how to write this review. My grandmother lived here for several years and I've come quite a few times for meals, functions, and just to hang it out with my grandma and family. She had been escalated from assisted living for some time but started in standard level assisted living. She had AMD and was mostly blind. It's tough to live that way and people (the staff) were always very pleasant and accommodating. After she died, the bonds she had formed with some of the staff were very noticeable. My parents participated and still participate with many of the residents and get along really well with Denise, whose title, I think, is director of activities, but it could be more and she's really always caring and astonishingly helpful. They do seem to constantly upgrade and upkeep with new carpets, new furniture, TVs, etc. the staff are always responsive and if are made aware of things in advance are able to communicate necessary things between themselves in a responsible manner. That's not something you always see at a place like this. My experience in working in the geriatric field has led me to a lot of independent living AL, specialized care, rehab, TC facilities. Here, the focused care is "focused" and least restrictive but with real care. The politics aside in running so many levels of care, they managed it well. I admit I never really saw the focused care staff, because my grandmother did not have that type of need, but the staff knew me. I didn't come as often as I could have, but still it felt comfortable there. My grandmother had come from an independent & assisted living which was much more expensive and less comfortable in Boston. There, she complained about everything, but really seemed like such a bright move to come here. No real problems at all. Really this place is worth a tour for a family member if its what you or your loved one needs. read more

Initially, my mother lived in her apartment on the 8th floor with a beautiful view of the mountains. At the age of 80, she drove all over Pasadena to concerts, lectures and shopping. When she could no longer drive, she caught the bus at the bus-stop in front of the building and walked to her bank. Eventually she moved to the Assisted Living floor where she received help with her medications. She grew wonderful potted succelents and enjoyed the fir trees of the inner patio. The facility van provided transportation for appointments, for church and Sunday outings. We, as a family, enjoyed many holiday dinners with her in the gracious and beautifully decorated dining room. As her Alzheimer's symptoms advanced, she was one of the first residents to move into the Focused Care program where she was cared for by energetic, positive and kind staff members in accomodations made to fit her needs, thanks to the administrators. On her 94th birthday, I observed her seated in the cheery dining room, smiling and engaged with her dining companions and caregivers. Could I, as her daughter, ever have wanted more for her in her later years than the beautiful facility, the kindness of caregivers and the professionalism of the administrative services offered at Pasadena Highlands? read more

The Pasadena Highlands earns a 5 star review in many areas, but this review focuses on the assisted living part of that community. My mother Carol Keyes lived here for 13 and 1/2 years and for her it was home. At first she used the Highlands like a hotel, flitting about town while she was in her 80s. As her health and cognitive abilities declined she began to make use of the assisted living services and it is in this area that the Highlands shines. The head of assisted living is Laura Sanchez. She is a compassionate, caring, yet tough boss who hires only the very best people to serve on her staff. My mother was fortunate to have many fine caregivers at the Highlands during her last few years; the ones that come to mind first are Eileen, Maria, Diana, and Nate. Those 4 and many others gave my mother not just the care she needed but also the love she needed. During the last 3 weeks when my mother got sick and eventually died, the Highlands and Hospice provided exceptional care and attention to my mother and her declining situation. Both Laura and many caregivers stopped by to check up on my mother, see if she or I needed anything, and to give her a kiss and tell her they loved her and that she would be missed. My mother was a spunky lady and had many running jokes with lots of the staff and they loved her for it. If you're looking for a community where you can enjoy your remaining years and know that if you do need assistance at some point it will be there for you, then the Highlands should be at the top of that list. read more

Last week my colleague and I took a tour of this wonderful community. Celida Garcia met us in the lobby to begin our tour. This community is very lovely from the lobby to the top floor. The dining area is my favorite because of the way every seat and table felt like it was specially made for each resident. The day that we arrived they were having a birthday party, with live music and all the residents having a great time in the Garden. My mother-in-law has been suffering from Parkinson's for over 10 years. Her condition has worsened and she needed more help. During the covid pandemic the team at Pasadena Highlands worked tirelessly to get her in.. Alex did a personalized virtual tour of the place. He showed us what the place looked like from the moment you pulled up in the driveway, through the elevators, to her apartment, and the beautiful grounds and amenities. Alex and the fabulous nurse, Laura, made many home visits dropping off material for us, taking a physical exam, and administering covid testing. They helped us every step of the way and greeted us on move in day. This place is beautiful. The residents look happy. The apartment is spacious and well kept. My mother-in-law is quite picky and for her to be be satisfied is quite a feat. Thank you to Alex and the team there for making sure she is safe and happy. read more

My father, now 93, has lived at Pasadena Highlands since June 2014. Although the initial transition was rough due primarily to the fact that he had recently lost his wife of over 65 years, and moved from a senior community in Arizona where he knew a lot of people, it has turned out to be a wonderful place for him to be at this time in his life. It has become more than a residence with an incredible view of the San Gabriel mountains -- it is his home and he feels as though the staff and residents there are part of his family. The people who work there have given him nothing but great kindness, care and love. They are all angels in my and my father's opinion! Granted it isn't perfect, just like any community, but everyone I have encountered there works hard and is very dedicated to taking care of those in the senior years of their lives. I don't know what I'd do without them! read more

This place needs to get their act together. OK about 2 years ago we thought this was the best place to take my dad. Demetia etc, we could not keep him at home. This place gave us a sense of relief but quickly turned into a disaster. Through a long process which ended up with a bait and switch, over promises etc a rush for us to give them a check to "secure" a room, we had to find another place for him. There was no way they could have taken care of my dad and they knew this yet just wanted the money. Getting the check back was like pulling teeth and it took months. They lost it. It was then mailed to the wrong address after I repeatedly told them I would come in and pick it up, the lady that "duped" us and took the check was fired, it goes on and on. Over 2 years later they still have my info and are now cold calling me to try to get me, yes me, not my dad, to stay there. (maybe they think they are calling my dad, but why would they call an old dementia patient?) They just don't get it. I got 2 cold calls within an hour on Friday by 2 different sales people, and after giving the second person an earful and she assured me she would talk to her boss Robert, who I met back in the day, saying she would have my file deleted, I get a third call on Monday morning from yet another sales person asking if I want to tour the facility. I guarantee I will never recommend this joke shop to anybody. They still cant get it together. I guess now it is considered harassment. I can't imagine what it would be like to be a resident there but if this is any indication of how they run the place I would keep your loved ones far far away from this place. read more

Alex even came by our house (during the quarantine) to bring us the necessary paper work for admission. Due to his help the admission process took less than a week, which we greatly appreciated.
