I tried to just tough it out, but this time I couldn't muscle through it. I went to see Dr. Yoo, and honestly, the treatment he did wasn't something I was comfortable with at first--but as soon as he worked on me, I could suddenly turn my head about 45 degrees each way. It was amazing. He even drew out some bad blood from the back of my head (pretty gruesome to see!), but it worked. My shoulders slope. Disaster abounds along my spine. One day my mother told me I was going to an Asian doctor. She wanted me to get my back straightened out so I'd look good on my wedding day. No, I'm not engaged. The Hills Acupuncture Clinic is in a medical building in Northridge with a free parking lot. It's small, with one office, two patient rooms, and a sitting area. It's also well kept, clean and welcoming. I'd never visited an OMD before and I was skeptical. Still, I went twice a week for about two months. The doctor at Hills is a very sweet, gentle middle-aged Korean man, skinny and soft-spoken and skilled with his hands. Each session lasts about an hour and involves a combination of acupuncture and chiropractic. Both hurt at times, but for the most part the experience is not entirely unpleasant. Occasionally one needle will feel like it's cutting through some thick meat, but otherwise it just pricks. From what I understand, acupuncture has been proven effective while chiropractic is pretty controversial. This doctor definitely believes in both, and while I went, I did see results. The thing with chiropractic, though, is that results wear off when you stop going. After a couple months I got a job and realized the clinic was too big of a time commitment. The doctor was also having me do exercises that I felt guilty every week for forgetting to perform. I'm not entirely sold on acupuncture and chiropractic as a way of life, but I like this clinic, and I'll go back whenever I feel the need to stick myself with needles to redirect my flow of chi. And when I do get married, I'll see the doctor again about smoothing out the horrors of my spine.

I've had the opportunity to try acupuncture twice but for short and very specific reasons to see if would help with back pain and anxiety. I had a positive experience so I wanted to get more serious about Eastern Medicine and to expand my understanding on how it can help me from a Holistic perspective. Jennifer was very kind in taking the time to answer all of my questions and concerns. I was impressed by her professionalism and knowledge that I asked to have a formal consultation back at her office which I did a week later. During our consult, the observations she performed made a discovery which she thought was urgent enough for me to see a medical Dr immediately. She informed me that she saw signs that I had a severe bacterial infection. Since this was our first meeting and I had not given her any current blood work tests, I was a little skeptical. She showed a truly genuine concern about my situation and for me to get it checked as soon as possible. She made sure I took this seriously and as a priority over any of the services she offered. After finishing the consultation, I felt quite empowered with all of the information she had shared about my body that seemed to get to the root issues and not just treating the symptoms. Unfortunately, I can be quite stubborn when it comes to seeing Dr's which translates to my fear of going to see them and finding out something I don't want to hear. Fast forward 3 weeks later, I rushed to the ER with extreme abdominal pains which felt like a 10/10. They did blood work and a CT Scan and found out I had acute Appendicitis and localized Peritonitis and that my Appendix could burst at any moment. They rushed me immediately upstairs to the OR and I went through an emergency Laparoscopic Appendectomy. Luckily the surgery went well without any complications and they were able to resolve the issue before it became life threatening. Even through all of what I went through the last 8 weeks, I truly find comfort in knowing Dr Liptawat had diagnosed me 3 weeks prior and that she wasn't trying to scare me into using any of her services. She truly is knowledgeable along with a genuine and caring heart. I look forward to working with her on my journey back to being the healthiest version of myself.
