To me it would have been more authentic and true if they just served grill meat (over charcoal), tons of herbs and rice noodles. The stir fried veggies gave it that western touch. In my opinion the chả was a bit dry and did not start any kind of flavor explosions. Everything was okay and good if you just want a decent meal. SERVICE The staff was nice and friendly. Especially the girls. They were quick in reacting to our wishes and just did a good job. ATMOSPHERE I think this is what their regular customers want and why they like this place. A modern and fresh look. Everything looks clean and cozy. RATING To me I would have given this restaurant three stars because the food looks pretty but just taste ordinary. The restaurant space is beautiful with warm lighting. Their menu has a variety of items like soups, curries, and appetizers. I think it's interesting they call eggrolls "spring rolls" here and what I consider spring rolls is DIY special rolls. I got a pot of chrysanthemum tea, "spring rolls," dumplings to share, and a bowl of pho (recommended to me while I was choosing between that and bun bo hue). I think it's cool that they offered bun bo hue and chè banh lot here. I don't see it often in Europe so I wish we were able to go twice so I could've tried it. The chrysanthemum tea was a whole flower (wait for it to bloom before drinking!). It was warming for the cold weather. I also got a non-alcoholic beer which tasted just like liquid bread without the tang of alcohol. It was my first time having a non-alcoholic beer so it felt like a prettier carbonated drink to me. The spring rolls came in three small pieces; one order is meant to be for one person. I liked how crispy it was. The dumplings were probably the letdown of the meal. Texture and flavors were lackluster. You really got to dip it in the curry sauce that it's plated on which makes for an awkward experience when sharing. There are six pieces per order. The veggie type had mushrooms and while I usually like them, I didn't enjoy them as much as the meat version. My pho hit the spot after a whole week of European food. I find Germany's pho to be better than those of other European countries probably due to the big diaspora. It didn't come with hoisin and Sriracha like it does in the U.S.--just bean sprouts, lime, Thai chilies, basil, and I was surprised they had the spiky leaves too. It was a good portion and the meat was tender. I demolished the whole bowl. The service was amazing. I think the final price was a bit much per person (30€+ each). Overall I highly recommend this spot in Essen!

If you are Vietnamese you should know that the kitchen is operated by a south as well as a north Vietnamese chef. This will make a difference on the expectations and taste. For example the Pho will be nothing like the ones you get in the south of Vietnam. If you have eaten Pho in Saigon then this probably won't be as near as good as you have experienced there. The roasted pork over rice was not bad but not great either because the meat was just reheated and the skin wasn't crispy throughout. The favorite dish of president Obama was done quite well with the exception of the noodles which easily broke into small bits. The banh mi wasn't served with a french baguette which in my opinion is a mistake. The bread wasn't fluffy inside and the crust was too hard. Yes, it should be crispy but when you bite into the bread it should become fluffy and light. The bread they use made it heavy and the bread itself has very distinctive taste. It should be more of a vessel for the yummy ingredients and elevate those instead. The avocado smoothie was really good as well as the sticky rice with mango and coconut cream. SERVICE The service here is okay. If you are Vietnamese you probably feel that the service is better since you can communicate with the staff on another level. If not, you will probably say that they just do their job and that's it. ATMOSPHERE The restaurant has two levels. I think eating downstairs is better. It isn't as cramped as upstairs, everything is better lit and decorated. I would recommend upstairs if you are alone or prefer a darker, more intimate vibe. RATING For me it came down to one issue and that is the bread of the banh mi. I don't mind if you put your own twist on a dish but I think in this case it was for the worse. Take my 3 stars more like a 3.9 stars because anything else was good or okay enough. Maybe you even like the banh mi more that way. If you do, please rate them with four or more stars. UPDATE They changed the bread for the banh mi to a traditional banh mi baguette and therefore the rating goes from three to four stars.
