We stopped by for lunch on a Thursday. They're known for their lunch bento boxes but were sadly sold out by the time we got there so we all went with their other lunch menu item which was quite good. We were in little Tokyo one evening and wandering around, trying to find food. Many of the restaurants were packed and fully booked for the night but we somehow got in at the right time when a reservation didn't show up so we were able to be seated. The food overall was pretty good and pretty authentic. The only downside to this place is that the prices are pretty high for what it is what it is pretty good quality of food. I ordered that would unagi bowl and my wife ordered the charisdon bowl. Quality of cuts of the sashimi were great, and even the Unagi was really flavorful. It is a tight little shop, so you gotta sit really close to other people but overall everybody around there is very friendly read more

Went for lunch menu and paid 14€ for 7 pieces of nigiri. The creation and taste are authentic but I personally have to say that price-value wise yabase doesn't convince me on a level for me become obsessed with. I'd go for lunch but dinner is too pricey for the taste and quality. I personally found nagomi or Nagaya to be the Better option as per my preference read more

I was skeptic about eating sushi here in Düsseldorf but my friend reassured me that this restaurant was great because of the large Japanese community here. This restaurant accepts credit cards and I recommend making a reservation. Our dinner was at 8:45 and this place was packed! There were no menus in English so we ordered by just pointing at the pictures. For starters - the tuna sushi combination - amazing toro! Tuna tataki - the plate didn't look to appealing what it tasted great! I'm a big fan of garlic and that sauce on top was just mostly garlic. Yummy Pork belly - I wasn't too much of a fan. It wasn't a hot dish and I thought the meat was a bit dry. Entree - udon noodle soup - great broth but I thought it was missing some other ingredients that udon soup would usually have like fish cake. For two people we spent about 80€ so it was a bit expensive. Again, great quality so it's worth it. read more

Having been going to Kushi-Tei all these years, finally decided to try something new, so after looking around, we decided to come here and give it a try. We ordered the full course menu, it's about 65€ per person, about 6 courses, it's enough to be full. It was good, but nothing surprising. We have the feeling that it could be better. Would probably not get the menu again, as it is not really worth it. Might try a la carte next time. But still think kushi Tei offers more. read more

We walked in here off the street on a Tuesday night and ended up waiting for 25 mins to get a free table. They were kind enough to put us on the list and whilst the wait was longer than anticipated it was ok. The place was buzzing from the time we arrived till the time we left. About half the patrons were Japanese or Asian. The menu here is good with a wide variety of choices and daily chefs specials. They have sushi, sashimi, udon, small plates, yakitori, salads, meat and on and on the list goes. There is a choice of drinks including sake. We decided to share a few dishes. The value for money is a bit low and hence the 4 stars. It's quite expensive and whilst the quality is great it's not phenomenal for the money spent. The sashimi was exquisite as was the yakitori. The tempura was ok and the small dishes were all ok. I enjoyed the meal very much but not sure I would spend that kind of money again here. I think you can do a lot better for that money in other places. Despite being really busy the service was polite, quick and courteous. The food came out in quick succession once the order was placed. Try the black sesame ice cream for dessert, it's to die for :-)) All in all a great experience and good service. read more

I have to revise to 5 stars. I think that the quality of the food has improved in the past couple of years. For lunch they have sets for excellent value and the selection at dinner is huge. The sashimi and sushi is still one of the best in Dusseldorf as well as the cooked food. Dinner may be a little bit more expensive but for the quality you get its worth every penny! read more

Excited at the prospect of an upcoming overnight trip to Dusseldorf, my wife and I started discussions about our dinner plans immediately. We settled on sushi and she tasked me to find the best sushi place in Dusseldorf. Upon arriving in Dusseldorf, I hit the Yelp button on my iPhone and pulled up a list of sushi restaurants. That list was overwhelmingly long, filled with too many favorable reviews for me to sift through in quick fashion. Dusseldorf has the highest concentration of Japanese in all of Germany. I do not know why, but there is indeed, a "Little Tokyo" section in Dusseldorf. I was there last night. Reading Yelp tips didn't help (where is the auto-translation??!!) because of my German language inadequacies. My wife is fluent in German, but even that did little to narrow the broad range of excellent choices before us, so we headed for the general area of Japanese restaurant concentration, prepared to do a little walking and storefront reconnoitering. I felt a little like Jon Tapper on Bar Rescue, surreptitiously checking out establishments. FWIW, he's a big Yelp fan too. As my wife and I discussed the situation in regards to our choices, we were approached by an English speaking American guy who overheard us talking and decided to interject. He lives in Dusseldorf and knows the place. About then, I was feeling a bit like a contestant on The Amazing Race, enlisting the help of whoever crosses my path in the quest for riches, or in my case, a good sushi dinner. Yelp was, at least marginally tangential in regards to this restaurant selection. If we hadn't been standing on the street blabbering about our Yelp finds, this helpful fellow would have never known we were American, or confused (ok, maybe confused). I got his permission to take and post his photo (attached). Didn't get his name. Major kudos to this LSU grad. The appointments inside Yabase are pretty basic and the prices are high. That didn't seem to have an effect on the crowd. We were lucky enough to get the last open two-top. There wasn't even an open seat at the sushi bar. A good 80 to 90 percent of the place were clients of Japanese descent. That always bodes well if you ask me, and indeed, the food was de-freakin-licious. Enjoy. read more

Best quality sushi I have ever had. I'm more accustomed to Westernized specialty sushi rolls, but this restaurant seems to provide more of an authentic Japanese sushi experience. I had the Chirashi sushi bowl, which was basically raw fresh seafood on a bowl of rice with vegetables and wasabi. Was fabulous. The fish was thick, buttery smooth, and delicious. I've never had such fresh, high-quality sushi, and my husband and I marveled at the freshness and wondered whether there's a huge aquarium sushi farm in the back. It was also the first time my husband was actually full after eating sushi (outside of all-you-can-eat buffets), which speaks to the thickness of the fish. Only caveat is price- it is expensive. Dinner for two was almost 60€. If you also prefer sushi specialty rolls, I'm not sure how the restaurant rolls are as we only had the nigiri. But if you're willing to pay for fresh, high-quality delicious sushi, Yabase is your place. read more

Portions are all quite small for what you pay and all the dishes are not exactly hitting the mark.., and the room decor is very basic with office like ... And being a Japanese, I can tell you it is not that authentic... I had a group dinner with number of food... The only thing is sushi fish grade is very descent for all common ingredients. We ordered uni which was completely rotten but all common ingredients such as Tina and yellow tail were great. All cooked fish was bit bland and not that tasty but definitely edible. We happen to get really horrible service... Not getting menu for ages when we sat down, finally when we got to order, our two dishes were completely forgotten and ended up eating at all different times, uni sushi was rotten but they did not take any actions, and waitress dashing over and start cleaning our table as soon as we stood up... Not sure how much more unwelcome one can feel in a restaurant. Would not recommend it at all... read more

Amazing sushi restaurant in Stadtmitte. All of the sushi tasted extremely fresh. My only complaints are that the service is very disorganized and all of the sushi came with wasabi, which I don't like but I know it is standard. read more

I like japanese food and I went today with my husband to Yabase as I was told they give good Sushis. And although this was good we had quite a bad experience with the service and in particular with the owner. Today we asked for a degustation menu. It was good but we were astonished when we received the bill. First the price of the menu (45EUR) was far too high for the quantity that was really small. Second, I asked in the beginning for water and they brought me a glass of water. I thought it was strange they didnt give me a bottle. In any case I was thirsty so I asked for two more glasses. In the bill they charged us 2 EUR for each glass, 6 EUR for three small glasses of water! We asked the owner how much a bottle of water would cost and he told us 4EUR. We asked him why he had charged us so much for the glasses and why he didnt give us a bottle in first place and he was rude and didnt answer us correctly. So we were really frustrated when we left the restaurant. read more

At this year's Japan Day in Duesseldorf, we decided to have some proper Sushi for dinner. So we went to Yabase. Even though this place is always extremely full and there is no chance to get a table for two without a prior reservation, we very much enjoyed the top quality authentic Japanese food. The staff is really friendly considering the enormous stress they have to deal with. Whenever someone leaves, immediately other persons take their tables. We had a great lunch for two persons. The Sushi-Nigiri were good quality, and the Udon-Soups had a fine taste. At EUR ~40,- this was not a cheap lunch, but the food was great, tasty and well worth the money. Only the atmosphere is not so nice as it could be. The food wasn't bad but the waitress was SUPER rude! We came in on Feb 12th at around 1pm, and were waiting at the entrance. After waiting for 5min, I asked politely to the waitress (non Japanese Asian woman) if we could go sitting to one table that looked empty. She got irritated and responded "we are preparing, can't you wait!?", to which I said she could have told us so instead of leaving us not knowing what to do. Instead of apologizing, she said aggressively (almost yelled) "you calm down!". Wtf!? I was looking forward to eating Japanese food, it's just not nice to be treated like that in a restaurant. I am a big sushi fan but did not enjoy my trip to Yabase. The sushi was different from what I was used to - perhaps more "authentic"? The cuts of fish were so thick that it wasn't delicate anymore and some of them were really hacked up - not cleanly cut. That is a big turn-off. Sushi is not pizza (even when it's bad it's good), so when it is cut roughly or too thick it becomes unappetizing. Perhaps it was just an off night for them. Perhaps I am just too used to the typical American or German style sushi. I don't know. The fish did seem fresh though. read more

For all the REAL sushi lovers, this is the place!! I think Yabase serves the best sushi (sashimi) around here. It is worth paying for what you get. I can't speak for dinner here, but they do an amazing lunch. My friend and I (and it seemed most everyone else in the restaurant) ordered the 13 EUR,- lunch special; a choice between "sushi" or "chicken" and it's chef's choice. The fish was SO fresh and the service was attentive and friendly. We got the Yabase reccomendation from two japanese friends who told us it was the only place they went for the best sushi... Excellent food, mediocre service, bad business practices to increase sales. They have a new policy: if you're just by yourself they unabashedly place another person, a stranger, opposite to you on your table. The tables are tiny. Though this is a common practice in Germany I find it embarrassing, an infringement upon someone's privacy. It makes me feel quite queasy.
