We went on a very busy night. It was complete mayhem in the parking lot and a couple of parking attendants would go a long way to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety. The music group playing the night we went has a big following and they have more patrons than usual. The wait staff tried their best to keep food and drinks being served the best they could. Not dog friendly anymore. We've come here a bunch of times with our dog and would be able to sit outside and have a few drinks. We always had a pleasant experience and respected the rules of the brewery to stay outside with our dog. Yesterday, we came by around 3 p.m. and it was relatively quiet with lots of empty seating outside. When we went to sit at a table, a waitress told us they had a designated dog area to the side at two broken tables in the sun and that we could not sit at any of the shaded tables. She also told us we could not order food with our dog there. We asked if we could move an umbrella over so we wouldn't have to sit in the sun--the waitress said she would ask and then never came back. When we realized no one was going to help, we asked a second time and were told there was no way to give us shade, so we left. It was disappointing as we liked coming here but it felt like they were deliberately trying to make dog owners uncomfortable and unwelcome. I'd recommend going elsewhere if you are looking for a relaxing afternoon at a brewery. read more

Don't bother beer is average service is very poor. Was seated in the bar area and waited 20 minutes no service. Went to the bar and had to ask for a server. Ordered the pretzel appetizer, 2 burgers and a chicken sandwich. After 30 minutes, nothing no pretzel no food. Again had to find my server paid for my beer and left. They need someone that knows how to manage a restaurant not a bunch of kids with limited restaurant experience. Plenty of other places who appreciate their customers. As a native cape codder I support local businesses. However hog island was charging $15 for one can of beer and $18 for a very low alcohol mixed drink at a local Christmas event. We will never support them again. So many better places on cape cod that are reasonable. read more

Enjoyed ourselves so much we forgot to get photos of the beer and of the food before we started eating! Pretzels, chips and guac, and tenders were delicious. The beer cheese was a hit across the whole table! All of the beers and cocktails were good. The outdoor seating area is casual with picnic tables or plastic lawn furniture. Some tables outside had servers while others didn't - it wasn't clear why the inconsistency. We ended up ordering from the bar which wasn't a problem. Note that is place gets BUSY! We knew this so we were there about 20 minutes before they opened - and there was a line of about 50 people by the time noon rolled around. It also took about an hour to get our food. Nice brewery with good beers and drinks. Didn't love that we had to clean our own table. The servers walked by, but didn't bother to clean up the glasses from previous guests. I had ordered the blueberry lemonade - it was delicious. My boyfriend had a beer and enjoyed it. We wanted to buy the beer for takeout in cans, but sadly they were sold out. We ordered the sweet potato fries and fish tacos. The sweet potato fries might be the best we've ever had. The dipping sauce was great too. The fish tacos - horrible and very small. We came here with friends recently. They had a small but good menu. I didn't know what to expect but all our food was really delicious with big portions. I had a mediterranean pork pita, which was more like a salad with a pita on the side and it was so delicious. Others ordered chicken sandwiches and a burger. All were delicious. Loved sitting outside and our waiter was personable and helpful. We will be back to try more choices! read more

Lots of tables outside. Go through the inside to then enter the outdoor eating/sitting area. You do have to wait for a hostess to seat you though if you are eating. Several people tried to just sit at picnic tables on their own and were told to move. We got a table quickly despite the crowd. Ordered fish and chips and the sausage flatbread. Both were good as were the beers we tried. Seems like an area favorite as there were lots of cars/people there for dinner time. There are some Adirondack chairs etc for those just grabbing a beer and hanging out. Those were first come/first serve and didn't need a hostess. read more

What a great find! Nice, open and spacious outdoor area, which worked great with a toddler. Between my son-in-law searching for a great Pilsner to steamed clams in a flavorful broth with sausage, tomatoes and onions. Two of us ordered the poke bowl with tuna, which was very fresh tasting. Slow service, 3 people working hostess stand for no reason but waiter/waitresses few and far between. Took over 30 minutes to get our drinks and for them to ask us what we want to eat. No one gave us a water in that time (the hostesses could have easily done that job) and it was sunny and we were outside. Come to find out their flatbreads are pre-made and the one we wanted is out of stock. We left because there's a better Hog Island 20 minutes away. Also couldn't bring in our empty water bottle in to fill on this hot 4th of July day. Outside seating was nice at least, food looked terrible. Because of COVID, they only have outdoor seating available. The seating is picnic table style, family friendly, but can only seat 6 people in a table by law. The beer are solid and the food menu is decent with many choices. We came here when it's pouring out... Glad the seating is under a big tent! I'm reading the other reviews now after having gone there last night. Had I read them, I probably wound or have gone. My experience was so different! We had gone last year just for beer so decided to go back this year for a visit. This time, we decided to eat there too. Our food was fantastic. Probably the best fish sandwich I've ever eaten. Fresh and flavorful. My boyfriend had the brewery burger which was excellent as well. The coleslaw was even excellent. No mayo, fresh tarragon. We expected subpar food as it's a brewery but were pleasantly surprised! The staff were friendly and helpful too. I get the comment about the kids, there were a lot of them running around and screaming, seemingly unsupervised. That's not the establishments fault though. That falls on the parents. read more

I really liked this place when they first opened several years ago and there is a lot going for it. It is a great location not far off from 6A and the bike path, boasts a spacious indoor and outdoor space with multiple bars, plenty of seating, ample parking, a diverse range of beers, food offerings, etc. However, I feel like in the past several years they have been coasting in terms of the quality of their brew pub. The beers remain diverse and very tasty (definitely worth buying cans to go!), but the inside is starting to look worn down and a bit dirty (prime example would be the women's bathroom) with unnecessary clutter like boxes and canning supplies stacked on pallets interdispersed. The staff are still very courteous and friendly, but seems like they could use additional hands. On our most recent visit we sat inside. The beers as mentioned are quality, but the tap could use some additional carbonation. We ordered food (I ordered ahi tuna, husband a bowl of chili and a pretzel) and it took almost an hour to show. This was consistent with other patrons. It took over an hour for another person to receive their pretzel and truthfully none of the staff out front checked in with patrons about food orders unless customers inquired. The food pricing is fair (not cheap, not unreasonable), but not worth the wait. My ahi tuna was good, my husband said his chili was very enjoyable with the tricolor tortilla chips, and the pretzel with beer cheese and mustard was enjoyable, but standard. All of those items should have been pre-prepared and ready to serve. I feel like if there was another brewery closer than P-Town that they might give Hog Island a run if they existed. So my bottom line? Worth a visit for a flight, beer tasting, purchase cans, but the larger allure of the place seems to be sliding. I would venture somewhere else local if you want to have a timely food pairing. That being said my hopefully constructive critique is mostly easy fixes as I think Hog Island still has great potential! read more

Stopped here on our journey along the cape cod bike trail. There's ample space to park your bike, a beautiful lawn with outdoor seating and table service. Hog Island Beer Company is a craft brewpub that opened in Orleans, Massachusetts in June 2016. It was founded by business partners Mike McNamara and Mark Powers. In 2012, the two partners bought the old Jailhouse Tavern which opened in Orleans in 1984. Eventually the two decided to open an adjoining brewery. Mac Gallant (who owns Local Break restaurant in nearby Eastham) came on board as a third business partner for both the Jailhouse Tavern and the new brewery. John Kanaga was hired to be the brew master. The brewpub was given the name "Hog Island" in reference to an uninhabited parcel in Pleasant Bay. There's a local legend that infamous pirate Captain Kidd buried some treasure there. The official tagline for the brewpub is "The Outermost Brewery". I visited Hog Island for the first time recently when I was on a week-long vacation in Cape Cod with my family. While my wife took our son to a local playground, I cycled to Hog Island from our Airbnb (via the Cape Cod Rail Trail). I initially didn't realize that Hog Island and Jailhouse Tavern were separate and yet connected businesses. Although there is a wall separating the two businesses, food from the tavern can be ordered and served at the brewery, while beer from the brewery can be ordered and served at the tavern. The two businesses are connected via the kitchen. Hog Island had a pretty cool taproom with a stage for local music acts. The full bar area features a cutout Winnebago on the back wall (a tribute to life on the beach). They even had a staff member shucking fresh oysters for customers. I wasn't particularly hungry, but I was pretty thirsty after my ride. I ordered a sampler flight consisting of a pale ale, a stout, an IPA, and a New England IPA. I think that the latter was my favorite offering. I would stop by again if I'm in the area and I'm interesting in trying the food from Jailhouse Tavern. read more

We went to Hog Island around 745. we picked this place because my husband enjoys local beers and we wanted a place to go where we could bring our dogs, which they advertise is possible. we were told by the hostess that we would need to sit at a table separate from the others and order or stuff at the bar and pick it up. Okay, table no biggie as we tend to be away from others. We noticed after we ordered food that their were servers taking other table orders and delivering food. We were told we had to do this cause we brought the dogs, Confused, we were. They say dogs are okay yet we were treated differently than others. Food was nothing special, beer was okay not great. COVID Context: Hog island beer did a great job seating individuals separately and maintaining social distance requirements! Food and Drink: We traveled across the cape to visit this brewery. The atmosphere was lovely outside with well-shaded tables. We ordered drinks quickly; they had a great variety too! From their own Hog Island Beer to local beers, wines, and cocktails! I ordered the hibiscus sour which was tart and refreshing for the summer heat. Others in the party ordered the cider available on the menu and an IPA, which were reportedly tasty. As for the food, I have to say this is where I was disappointed. We ordered nachos and simply put, they weren't very good. The cheese was cold and curdy, which they topped off with a salsa. The meat used on the nachos were actually quite good - tender! It was hard to enjoy though when they were soaked by cold cheese "queso". I wanted to like this brewery a lot, but unfortunately between the service (we asked three times during an hour for a dog water bowl) and food, I don't see myself making the trip all the way out there again. read more

Hog Island Beer at the old Jailhouse restaurant in Orleans has totally transformed the space. I came here with my husband and my dad on a very, very, too hot day, so we nixed the outside area to avoid melting into the pavement, and headed inside to the tasting room/beer hall for a bite and cold beers. The vibe is very cool - the inside is decorated to look like you're at the beach, but the space is completely open so it has that beer hall vibe. There are two different bars to order drinks from, though one is specific specifically for Hog Island Beer only, and the other one is a full working bar, so there's truly something for everyone. This also seemed to be very family friendly, and there is a shuffleboard game, foosball, and large Connect Four, and lots of open space. The longer bar also has large TVs, so it makes for a good spot to post up and catch the game. I was a little banged up from the night prior, so nixed grabbing a flight, and instead settled for the White Shark Wheat, which was exactly the hair of the dog that I needed to rally. It was a great, easy drinking wheat beer. My dad had the Daily Sail Session IPA, and my husband had a Pilsner (can't remember the exact name... or if that's what it even was, I was very focused on my White Shark). Next time I'll absolutely grab a flight though (especially for the 'Gram opportunities... and more beer). There is also a designated food area, with plenty of options for everyone. I had the Brewery salad, that has beets and feta, and was absolutely delicious. It's a nice, light option to have while drinking beer too. We also got the pretzel, which is enormous and comes with a really nice spicy mustard and beer cheese, hot dogs (huge), and wings. Everything was cooked to order and tasted great - you're given a buzzer so you can hang at your table until your food is ready to go. It was crowded when we went, but not insane, so I disagree with a lot of the reviews based on the experience that we had. Plus, it's a brewery, these places get crowded - go early to grab a table, or try to squeeze in somewhere. This is a great option for a place to go to sip some beers and have good bar food in a really dope atmosphere. Hog Island is one of our go to places when visiting the Cape. They offer a variety of beers as well as some things to munch on. I love that they have outdoor seating/games and often have live music. I never really have much of an issue finding a seat. Four stars because I agree with most of the other reviews- last time I went there was two kids screaming and throwing the basketballs everywhere. At one point the ball flew onto the table nearby and spilled someone's drink. read more

Was glad to see that Orleans was now home to its own craft brewery. Had eaten many times at the Jailhouse over the past twenty years- so was pleased to see that this business exists within the same footprint/parking lot. Had read all the previous Yelp reviews and agree with most others. Hog Island knocks it out of the park for atmosphere-ambience- and being family friendly. This seems to be a growing trend with a lot of craft breweries- making it a destination spot where you can bring the kids- or the dog. Plenty of outdoor/indoor seating for everyone with giant Connect 4- shuffleboard/cornhole,etc. to keep the little ones entertained. Separate areas for serving your flights, ordering pints at the long bar or ordering from their plentiful menu options. They do also have TVs mounted on the walls throughout - so chances are you can catch your favorite team play. Where the brewery takes a step back(albeit not a huge one) is unfortunately their beer. We had a flight of six varieties ($10)- ranging from their lighter Pilsner up to their Far Out Stout. Honestly, the first four samples : Pochet Pilsner/White Shark Wheat/ Day Sail Session IPA/Moon Sail Pale Ale- were nothing memorable. One didn't stand out from the other. Now that's not to say that they were bad- as that's not the case at all. I did, however, enjoy their Outermost IPA(which I had previously purchased a 6pk earlier in the week) and their Far Out Stout. Both of these were quite good and would be my first choices for enjoying a pint at Hog Island. Make no mistake about it- Hog Island is growing in popularity and has room to grow. They may soon even give the granddaddy of craft breweries on the Cape- Cape Cod Beer- a run for their money. My husband and I love going to breweries and when we saw a place that offered food near the beach we were going to we got excited. Once we finally found the correct way to enter we opted to eat inside hoping to cool off. We were sadly mistaken as there was no AC and even one fan in sight. After we relocated to outside we were greeted promptly. I will say the service was good. The food on the other hand not so much. Carne asada quesadilla had not steak. Crab cakes were completely burnt on the bottom. If the prices reflected the quality of the food I probably wouldn't have felt so strongly but the prices were super high for the quality of the food. However, it took over 14 minutes to get a server we almost left! The beer choices were alright, but it's a shame about the service and food! The clam chowder was average at best. The chowder was a bit bland, and not a whole lot of clams. The brewery pretzel was perfect for the little one's, but the housemade Root Beer was quite syrupy. The Dynamite Shrimp had a crunchy coating and spicy chili sauce. Staff is friendly. One thing non-Covid related is the stairs to get up. They are ancient and falling apart and overgrown with bushes. After having a few, tread very carefully. We have been to this place 3 times recently and back to back have had 2 mediocre and 1 dreadful experience. We tried to give them the benefit of the doubt but will never set foot in the place again. We have had servers tell us they won't go to the bar to ask a question, have had food spilled on us by staff only to be accused by management that it was our own fault. They try to mislead with their billing with a "Cash Adjustment" charge on the check which is a discount if you pay cash but they don't tell you that unless you ask. More than a bit sneaky. Don't know who owns or runs this establishment but they do a crappy job managing it. Plenty of better options out there. read more
