Generally speaking, when so many employees are that unhappy, the problem often stems from what I call "trickle down bad attitude management." The sluggish and sometimes angry attitude of the staff says it all. This is not a one-off. It seems endemic to all their stores. At least the ones I've been in. Will that stop me from doing business with Lukes? Nope. I really like their selection of excellent wines and their great prices.

When we got to the register, the young girl asked for our IDs. I proceeded to get mine out and told her he didn't have one. She informed me she couldn't sell to me with him there. I actually have never brought my son into a liquor store so am unaware of any particular laws. I genuinely asked if he waited in the car could we complete the sale. She proceeded to throw her hands up in the air in front of all the customers and loudly state "I cannot sell ANYTHING to YOU." Okay...I'm confused...did I do something? I guess this is a law. I'm perfectly okay with that, and truly appreciate Luke's upholding the law as I don't condone underage drinking nor was I buying for my son. Ignorance is no excuse. But was there a reason why she couldn't nicely EXPLAIN what the law was instead of embarrassing us as if we were knowingly doing something wrong. I dropped my son off at home and thought about going back (though I'm not sure if I was blackballed for the day/week/month since she didn't explain the law to me). But CUSTOMER SERVICE IS EVERYTHING so I went elsewhere (without my son) to make my purchase from lovely merchant up the road. It will be a very long time before step foot in Luke's again. I'm sure Luke's does enough business that one customer won't hurt their profit but, if I'm being honest, I've never found the cashiers in the Harwich location to be all that cordial.

She ended up giving me a couple of suggestions that literally changed my life! And, not for nothing - they have such an incredible variety of wines and spirits now. I appreciated that they had hand sanitizer both inside and outside the entrance and the store itself seemed very clean. I picked up some interesting wines and all the price points were reasonable (maybe a little more than a larger liquor store, but nothing outrageous considering the location). Would she rather we throw the trash in the parking lot?! He was doing the right thing! My husband asked her not to yell at our son since he was trying to throw out trash properly. The woman worker must have complained that we stuck up for our son and the manager came and yelled at us and with some back and forth banter, he asked us all to leave!! Are they serious? What did we do wrong?! I guess shame on them and too bad for them! We will take our plentiful business elsewhere! We have never witnessed such rude business ethic in our lives! The inside of the brewery is very nice and unpretentious with a lot of seating, and they also have a large outdoor patio with tons of Adirondack chairs and a few picnic tables. The beer was very good. We tried a couple IPAs, a coconut porter, a barleywine, and a maibock. The barleywine was on nitro which was surprising, but it was actually really lovely. Definitely stop in for a few beers and a laid back vibe!
