Genuss is a café centrally located in Berchtesgaden's Marktplatz, with unconventionally…read morecontemporary decor and furniture. Their small section of outdoor seats and tables are orange and white (not the seats/tables in the center of the plaza). Inside are more seats in an airy, colorful space, plus a cute loft area in the back.
Great spot for a light meal, dessert, or drink, and a break from the heavier, traditional German foods favored in the area. Foods are along the lines of bruschetta, antipasti, and pizzas. The 30 cm pizzas are relatively thin crust, with many topping combinations to choose from, and gets a pass (if not a thumbs up) from this New Yorker. Antipasti are reasonably good; the platter that had a sampling of all included hard cheese and mozzarella, cured ham, olives, pickled peppers, grilled zucchini and eggplant, and a refreshing, tangy curry-mango spread.
A slice of mandarin orange cream pie was unexpectedly delightful: creamy, light, and not very sweet. Cappuccino and coffee are fine.
For something more modern and fun in Marktplatz, Genuss delivers. Our visits were relaxing, and our server always very hospitable.
