My guilty pleasure on lazy weekends, sometimes I shop in the area and get my Saturday coffee nearby, so I love to stop here every now and again. The food is fresh and the chicken always tastes like lots of care has went into the preparation, they make sure it maintains its taste and freshness, it never tastes or smells like beef which can be commonplace at a hot sandwich shop. The shop itself is very clean and super hot in the summer time, it's also pretty small so it's a great place to pickup takeout from. The Portions are huge and always made to order (piping hot). I never wait more than 10-15 mins and calling ahead never hurts. read more

Down and dirty (not really dirty) joint. Greeted as we walked in and Momma took out order. Then we listened to the wonderful music of the spatula melodically chopping up the steak and veggies. LOL Hot and fresh, great serving of fries. Will go back before I leave for work. read more

Hoagy Steak is located a few blocks away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Leandro. It's next to Scends (soul food spot) and there's a pet store across the street. Metered street parking around the area. Tiny shop w 2 tables. So I got the Deluxe Cheesesteak (mushrooms, steak, bell peppers) and the meat was pretty dry and bland. Fries could have been crispier. Food was alright, Service was garbage. I would probably order to go next time, because I did like the food, but didn't appreciate how rude the lady at the register was. When my fiancée & I walked in, we weren't greeted at all! It looked like a husband & wife. Could be brother & sister, not sure. But the man was cooking food already, must've been for a phone order. The lady was doing nothing. So we sat at a table that had menus on it. Sat there for 5 minutes and looked through the menu, and still nobody acknowledged us. So I just got up and walked to the register and the lady said what she could get us. I then whispered "better service" and gave her my order. Paid, waited. Food took about 10 minutes, they hooked it up with a lot of steak & fries! Bread was a little hard and fries weren't salted enough. Other than that, not bad! We'll definitely be back, but to order over the phone & take to go! read more

I arrived at 7:40pm. They close at 8pm. Open sign on. Customer at the register paying. Once he's done, I step to the counter and the lady begins to take my order. As I begin to tell her what I want, the man comes from the back area looks at me and starts speaking to the lady in their common language. Although I can't understand what they are saying, bodily language indicates that they are clearly disagreeing. After about a minute of this, the lady turns to me and says "he said we're closed." I didn't say a word, I turned around and walked away. I could see 5 or 10 minutes even before closing refusing me service, but I'm there 20 minutes before you close and it's a carry out order. I felt it was ridiculous. It sucks cause all it takes is one bad experience to make me not patronize a establishment anymore. I'm over it. read more

This place never disappoints! The Hoagy cheesesteak sandwiches are the best in this part of the woods and the price is right! Who doesn't love thinly sliced beef slathered with cheese on a Hoagy bun?! Food comes out fresh and quick, they cook it right in front of your face after you order it so you know there's no funny business going on even after you keep on asking them questions and customizing your order. Anytime I am working in the area, Hoagy is the place for me for lunch time! The owners are very friendly, very nice and always take care of their customers. Everything I have ordered from hamburger, cheesesteak to teriyaki plates, have been very good. The best thing about most of the items that you order off of their menu comes with chips (fries)!! Love them!!! My English bulldog and I always have the chips!!! They give you a very good portion, They are always cooked perfectly, hot, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Everything has been very tasty, hot, fresh and filling. Love this place. The shop is a little small, I always take mine to go and either eat on the back of my truck or at the little corner seating area across the street. Eh. I had high hopes for this location. But I should have known the second that I arrived and smelled nothing. No smell of seasoned fries, grilled meats.. nothing. And when you walk inside, you can see they crowd the uncooked, unseasoned chicken onto their grill. All of those poor chicken thighs huddled up together as if they were trying to stay warm... only to leave the grill charred and dry. The chicken thighs are chaffing chile. The hoagy is... too something. I can't put my finger on it. The ingredients/toppings are not married. They are not even friends with benefits. The tomato is not flavorful. The extra garlic is invisible. The cheese ain't cheesing. And I ordered EXTRA cheese. It is just a hard no. Such a hard no that I threw the other half of my sandwich away. Yes... you read that right... into the trash, it went, just like my hopes of finding a decent hoagy... in the trash. The two stars are for the decent curly fries. I've been working in San Leandro for a few years now and I was not a fan of "Philly Cheesesteak" sandwiches because I've always found it a little soggy after a few minutes. A buddy of mine who lives a few blocks away brought me here at Hoagy Steak and it was an eye opener! Their sandwiches here are HUGE! We shared an order of their Cheese Steak and I enjoyed it alot! The bread was extra toasted and the way they cooked the meat with a charred/crusted exterior made a huge difference. They had applied the cheese onto the meat so it didn't sit on the bread and the flavors were very pronounced. A couple drawbacks would be too much salt and slightly on the oily side; but the FLAVORS.. OOH! They do have a lot of variety here and not just the typical "Philly" - so I think I'll be coming back here and trying it with my leading lady and try to think outside the bun! read more

I was not too impressed. I will say that this facility and the food associated with the facility did serve it's purpose. I entered, I ordered, and I ate. That about sums it up. I was not a fan of the area. It was hard to find parking on the street. The facility was small, although there were people sitting and eating. Just very....lack luster. The food was ok. I was not blown away. If anything, it was almost like eating from a salt lick. A little too much salt. I love cheesesteaks...and while I can't find any good cheesesteaks in the Oakland/San Leandro area, I would not return here. Hope others have a better experience than I did. read more

Best hoagies in Oakland hands down -- like even over Mills Hoagie! EVERY sandwich comes with fries and is reasonably priced! Every sandwich can also be ordered in steak, chicken, or veggie. The deluxe cheesesteak is the way to go (for me), however you can certainly build your own! Don't leave San Leandro without stopping here! read more

I always find myself ordering over the phone 15 minutes before they close, driving about 80 from Oakland just to get here. Not greasy and not stingy with their meat like the "cheesesteak shop" chain. Large portions. Love how it is ran by the same older couple for years. Wish they were open later. My fav Cheesesteak place in the east bay! read more

I came to this place expecting the cliche fat white all American guy cooking the sandwiches but I was greeted by a nice older Asian couple and I have to tell you all. This spot is a must go. The sandwich was the bomb, so so flavorful, I paid expecting only a sandwich but for my surprise was. Combo with fries included, fries are just regular flavor like but I will be coming back. This place isn't it. Two stars for a clean shop and order made on time. I ordered the monster deluxe cheesesteak with extra American cheese that was barely enough, proportionately. Meat was over-salted and tough. The curly fries were ALL crunch. They nearly tasted like potato chips. Blah. I'm surprised by the high reviews. When I called to place my order a woman answered, "YEAAAH?" Lol. K. Weird. I much prefer one of the other numerous cheesesteak shops in the area. I've been coming to Hoagy shop since 2007 & it's treated me well. Plenty of Options for cheesesteaks, chicken as well as steak, fries included with each sandwich. Quick service. I didn't eat outside but there's a few tables there. Nonetheless, I ate my food and it was good. The garlic fries weren't oily or soggy. The burger was massive, though I would suggest not playing the piece of lettuce on the bottom. The shake was good too. I'll be back soon to try out other menu items.

During the visit my son who was with me got a call about a job he had interviewed for and had to head outside for a call. I watched Brian connect with everyone who came to the bar. Amazing.
