Staff was very friendly here. With the whole COVID-19 going on the business made sure to keep the social distancing a priority. They had a number system going so when your number is called is when you come out your car to order, which I thought was a great idea considering how warm it was today, I was able to sit in the AC car while I waited to order. Enjoyed this traditional dairy bar with a wide selection of hard ice cream and toppings in addition to vanilla and chocolate soft serve. Also it's local so support local instead of a chain store like Dairy Queen. So in my wheelhouse its a nope, vanilla was too sweet and was a funny dyed yellow color, but if you like a Dairy Queen vibe and would prefer to support a local business this is a great place. We have friends who live down the road from here, and every time we visit them, we make it a point to stop at HK Dairy Barn on the way home. The hard ice cream is J. Foster's, so it's a good, creamy, local ice cream with lots of great flavors, and the soft serve is definitely made with a high percentage of milk fat - it's wonderful. I'm a big fan of hot fudge sundaes, and while I normally stick to hard ice cream with hot fudge because it doesn't melt as quickly, this soft serve actually holds its own when topped with a thick layer of hot fudge. I haven't had their ice cream cake yet, but my friend who lives in this area gets one every year for his birthday. My husband and I are thinking of getting one for ourselves to celebrate whatever holiday we have coming up. (Labor Day ice cream cake?) Prices are reasonable (a small order is pretty big), and there are a lot of toppings to choose from. This is one of the few places I've seen where a flurry comes with two toppings. I've been here multiple times. Both the hard and soft serve ice cream is delicious and there is also Italian ice (but I've never tried it). They also make Flurries (price includes two toppings, selection is pretty typical), shakes and sundaes. Be on the lookout for some of their specialty sundaes...I have to get the baklava sundae whenever I see it offered because it's SO good. Usually I just order from the window and eat at one of the picnic tables outside, but I actually stepped inside a few weeks ago and discovered there is a freezer full of chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches for sale in packs of six. I don't know what ice cream brand is used because it's not advertised anywhere. So my guess is their ice cream isn't locally sourced or anything premium. One big plus is they have very affordable prices. $3.50 for two scoops. Yay. The painted cows on the outside of the building look very similar to Ben & Jerry's cows. The serving sizes are generous and reasonably priced. There are many ice cream flavors to choose from and they usually have a couple of frozen yogurt flavors as well. I had a small cone on with cow tracks and malted chocolate pigsty. It was pretty delicious! It is way cheaper than most ice cream places I've been to for the quality and amount that I've gotten. Imagine a Ben & Jerry's or Cold Stone medium cone for $4+ for a small at $2.75. It's pretty great; the staff was super friendly and the outdoor area is very clean. They also contribute 10% of proceeds to donations / charities that ask for assistance, which is very generous. The only thing to keep in mind is there is no restrooms to use at all. read more

The Dairy Barn is the best food you can get on the road. I had a blast here! Last Thursday I lost my cat. His name was Jackson and he is a black Tabby, and I really miss him. While I was looking for him I stopped at the HK Dairy Barn and got some really good ice cream, and it was great! I never found Jackson, so I took my friend's cat to replace him. We aren't friends anymore. I renamed the cat Michael, and he's not as good as Jackson. One day I was walking him around the yard and he kept trying to get at my chickens. His leash slipped off and my rooster went mad on him! His name is Dirk and he is a Rhode Island Red. Michael didn't know that he was up against the top dog of the yard, and he really learned his lesson! Now he's afraid to go outside and stays in my basement all day. That's probably why all of the rats moved upstairs now. I really hate them, always scurrying around and defecating in my bed. Keep up the good work, HK Dairy Barn! read more

Excellent place to get soft serve! We go frequently as it is right down the end of our road and my husband loves ice cream. Ordered a small vanilla soft serve today and looked more like a large! Lots of picnic tables to sit at, always lots of people there and easy to get in and out. They have hard ice cream, sundaes and a cooler where you can grab ice cream sandwiches or ice cream cake also. Had an ice cream cannoli one time, so delicious! Owner is very friendly, showed up a couple times right after closing time, no problem served us anyway. The ice cream here is very nice and creamy. On the other hand after school events at hk middle school Dairy barn is very crowded. The lines are long, there is no where to park, and the ice cream makers are not the fastest. When it isn't crowded i came across another problem, over filling the cones. I asked for a cookies and cream in a cone they came out with a tiny cone with two GIANT scoops of ice cream on the cone, a soft serve cone. Anyways, when my brother asked for soft serve and the preparation was terrible. They put the cone under the machine and just turned it on. She filled until it was bugger then her arm.
