I worked with H&J Landscaping & Concrete Contractor on my home's backyard and front yard project. Over the course of 10 months we had many things done by John. We extended our driveway and had concrete pavers installed, privacy bushes so the kids don't walk through our lawn, walkway and front patio with porcelain tiles. We also did our backyard and John did a great work. We got a retaining wall flower bed installed so that we can garden herbs and vegetables. We planted pretty late this year due to the retaining wall finishing in April, but we now have many herbs like basil, thyme, mint and even cherry tomatoes growing in our backyard! We also got an overhang installed so that we can get some shade on our concrete patio area. The kids love playing out in our backyard now that it is redone by John. Our family got a koi pond in our backyard installed by John. He was confident that he could do it and talked up his skills. Within the first year it already started falling apart. The water fountain stopped working after a few uses, there are cracks in the pond causing it to leak, and the stones are falling off. We have called him multiple times to come and fix the pond but he has not found a lasting solution and there are still continuous problems. Now it will cost us another 12k+ to get all of the damages repaired. John was also all talk- he made promises that he backed out and did not stick to his word. He was very unprofessional and rude. The quote is competitive and provide details of work. The email response from H&J is responsive and clear. The contract agreement lists all the work area and materials/labors, payment schedule, which is professional and reliable. Our whole back yard includes all kinds of complex work, wood deck, wood bench, turf, concrete planter, fence, water fountain, Pergola. It's really hard to find good contractors to do all these jobs in one team. And the result is amazing! During the work, our communication is smooth and efficient. We showed our back yard design to Jimmy, and his team follow exactly it is to build the beautiful back yard for us. If there's feedback to Jimmy during construction, he would react quickly and match our requirement. It took about 3 months for our back yard to complete. The time schedule is acceptable considering there are spring break and our vacations in between. My fence blew over in one of the wind storms that we have in Fremont from time to time. It was old and much of the wood was rotten so it was not a surprise. Some of my neighbors had the same problem. I waited because I didn't like most of the fence designs I saw, their structure was inefficient. A 2x4 is much stiffer on its side rather than flat but most fences use flat 2x4s and they end up sagging. About two months ago, I saw my neighbor's fence getting rebuilt. I liked the design my neighbor's contractor was using so I asked Jimmy if he could do my fence. He came over after work and gave me a reasonable price. So I hired him. He showed up with a crew and a truck full of wood on the day he promised. I like the way they work, it is efficient. I was very impressed at how fast and how hard they work. They use power tools as much as possible, like for digging the fence post holes. They were careful and neat also. No unnecessary damage to the rest of my property. I had a different (landscaping) contractor for another project who I asked to be careful around my air conditioner condenser. And then I saw they were not. So I had to stand guard for the rest of the day for these other guys. Jimmy's crew cleaned up everything when they were done. One guy went out to pick up lunch and the crew ate right where they were working and went back to work. No wasted time. They even took care of their own garbage from lunch. The workmanship and materials were all top notch. Everything is straight and even and looks really good. I'm a very happy customer. read more

I contacted H&J landscaping and concrete contractor come out to give me an estimate on a new concrete driveway and paver patio installation. I had several quotes and i felt that they were very knowledgeable and trustworthy. With in 2 days i had my estimate email to me and I was ready to start the project. They demoed my existing driveway and installed new stamp concrete in a few days. The paver patio took a bit longer because we need a few days to decide the paver style.  I hope to do more work on my yard in the coming months. Maybe install artificial grass so we can use less water and plant some flowers in a raised flower bed retaining wall.  Overall the process was very easy going and had no issues with the landscaping work.  If you are looking for an experienced landscaper I recommend John and his landscaping team. read more

Updating my review to reflect a few items of concern after my front yard paver installation by H&J. I should note that my original contract with H&J had stipulated a one year warranty of work after completion. 1. Poly sand in my pavers starting showing signs of cracking a few months after installation. No issue with that in itself - perhaps more sand needed to be filled in. 2. I called H&J and John specifically on multiple occasions but he never picks up his phone. 3. When I finally got through a few weeks later. We arranged a date to look at a separate quote for my backyard and also fix the paver sand. 4. John promised to come by a few weeks later and add sand. The date rolled by and he never showed or offered an explanation. Thereafter I had another contractor perform my backyard work and fill in extra paver sand at no additional cost. The above substantiates to me that H&Js one year warranty of work is completely void and useless. I'm leaving 3 stars because the pavers are still adequate overall. However I feel compelled to dock a few for the lack of honesty and highly substandard communication. read more

My parents home is bay area and I frequent a lot during the summer months. When I was there a few weeks back I helped them get a landscaper to redo their driveway & lawn. We decided to get an estimate from John at this landscape company. We went forward as his quote was within our budget for this project he was very friendly and considerate about what we wanted and what our budget could afford. There were several cracks on the concrete driveway so we decided to replace it with pavers. Also we got artificial turf installed so it is easier to maintain and uses less water. I sincerely wish I could give zero stars in this review. He charged us a stupendous amount, used all cheap materials from Home Depot and left. He did an extremely sloppy job. Stay away from this guy. He is a total fraud. Apart from landscaping costs he charged us an additional 3000$ for resurrecting (not even setting up from scratch) an existing Koi pond and was supposed to plug all leaks and get it running. He merely cleaned up and vanished with the money. Used a cheap UV based filter from Home Depot which leaked in 2 weeks and killed the fishes. I ended up doing the rest of the work myself and had to replace all the equipment that he bought. We kept calling him and he never bothered to return our calls. Extremely disappointed with his work ethics and commitment. He should be taken to court and his license should be revoked. read more

BEWARE!!!!!!!!! John seems like a nice guy at first but once he has your money he forgets everything else. We had a cement patio done on February 14th. We advise him that we wanted the cement to slope away from our foundation which he said no problem. He started Monday and was done on Wednesday. He didn't come back until Saturday to finish the job. There was a specific design pattern I wanted and he totally forgot about it and said well I think this looks better. I told him no this is not what we agreed upon so he had a little fit and only sort of did the design I wanted. Communication is terrible with John! He also used my flip flops and damaged them to walk on the cement. John and his crew is so sloppy! I paid him extra to remove dirt and he made my backyard so messy! Once the patio was done he advise us he would come back in 7 days to remove the wood border which he didn't come. I was calling and texting him for days. Luckily, I seen him at Lowe's in Union City with his wife and asked him Hey??? When are you going to finish the job? He laughed and said tomorrow morning which would be March 3rd. When he finally came on March 3rd it was already 5pm. My husband advise him about the discoloration on the patio and water puddles on our cement- he laughed and said it's not dry. We have asked so many times about our receipt but he keep saying yeah I'll send it to you. It is now March 12th with no communication about our concerns and no receipt. This place is an absolute joke. We have spent over $5000k for our patio for it to look like there is bleaching spots all over. Out of 3 contractors, John gave us the best quote for our landscaping project. We wanted a few things done in the backyard so we can enjoy the spring & summer weather. This involved installing a new retaining wall placing our broken one, fixing our wooden fences, getting some artificial turf and pavers layed out.  John and his workers (sometimes 2 or 3) came by a few times per week to work on the job. I was suspect at first at why they didn't come everyday but John told me that they work on multiple projects at the same time and needed rotate between them. He assured me that the project will be done by the deadline as agreed so I stopped worrying. John was true to his word and I finished a few days beforehand. I really do want to give them a FIVE STAR review because the project was done with excellence quality, on time and on budget. We had a walkway with old crumbling concrete and John and his crew came and fixed it all in 4 days. They even came on Saturday to finish the job. They cleaned up really well, and even adjusted some of the landscaping features that the project was connected too. They ONLY took the payment after every little bit was completed. Now, as many contractors, they are really not into communication :-) They come, do the work and go. Fortunately, our project was simple and so our experience was a great one. Loved that they showed up on time, took just a little longer than expected due to Covid and supplies being readily available. They did extensive concrete work with drainage systems. A new flagstone patio and artificial turf. They cleaned up after themselves and respected my property. There were a couple of snafus not caused by them but the truck that delivered the concrete. H&J Landscape Company provided us with a free estimation on our landscaping and hardscaping project. We needed a lot done in both the front and back yard and some work on the side yards. I got a few quotes from various contractors and decided to go with John due to the great price and pictures of their work here on Yelp (They are also based in Union City which is a plus!, always like to support the local companies). I needed a lot done, first was the front yard where I needed new cement for the driveway & sidewalk. The driveway had a lot of cracks and damage over the years so it was time for it to be renewed. John and his crew demolished the old concrete and hauled away all the debris. They then leveled the dirt, added some bedrock and compact it. They then added some rebars for some support and poured the concrete on top. It looks great after they place the seal a few days afterwards. I also needed some work done on the backyard which included adding a brick retaining wall (facing the fences), some flower beds and drip irrigation, a pergola (was thinking about a overhang but decided on a pergola), flagstone steps and stamp concrete (replacing some old brick pavers). I didn't know how it would turn out, but after they were done it looks AMAZING now! My family is now able to enjoy the backyard for the rest of the summer and so glad we hired H&J Landscaping! read more

I had some problems with cracked concrete around my driveway and pool deck in Fremont due to soil settling. Jimmy and the team gave me a good quote and completed the work with great results and high quality. After almost a year there was a little more settling, so some of the cracks had re-opened; they agreed to come and do some patch-up at no additional cost. I am glad they stand behind their work. Hiring H&J Landscaping was a huge stress reliever! So someone from our neighorhood ran into my fence and also my two japanese maple trees. I believe they were drunk, but I am unsure since they fled the seen but luckily I got their license plates. Anyways, I called a few landscaping companies to fix up the fence and also plant new trees. H&J Landscaping was able to give me the best price so I used their quote to send into the insurance company. They accepted it and H&J Landscaping was able to get my fence back up quickly afterwards. Thank goodness all this is put behind us! Anyways, now that I've seen John work I am thinking of having him doing some concrete patio work. He said he is able to do almost any landscaping installation & construction so I am going to have my backyard redone. My overhang needs to be repainted because all of the recent rain and just regular wear and tear over the years. Also my retaining all is looking a bit out dated so maybe I'll get that redone also.  I really do recommend working with John! His price is very affordable and probably the best in the area. The only thing that is negative is that he takes a bit to reply to e-mails and texts messages and hard to communicate on the phone. I had John work on our backyard. We needed to cover up where our pool use to be. We hired another company who were suppose to come lay the brick to make everything match. However, were never showed up to finish the job. I friend recommend me to John. I was hesitant at first after reading the reviews. However, after speaking with him and him giving a really affordable rate. I gave him a try. First off I was very happy my backyard very was extremely messy. Yes there was junk on the floor, but not tools, food, or random things . Secondly the job was done in time. It took him three days to finish. That was the exact timeline he had given me. What a joke of a "business." I read the other reviews about John's unprofessionalism but decided to give him a shot anyways and boy was I wrong. I called John at 10am for an estimate on my yard. He said he is available and would come by at 7pm to look at the yard and give an estimate. At 5 30 I called again to confirm because of the negative reviews I read on this site. John answered and said yes I will see you at 7pm. 7 20pm comes around and I'm expecting him to bail and be unprofessional like all these other reviews say. I call him at 7 30 and several times after that with NO ANSWER. I leave a voicemail and of course he does call me back or show up. John you are a joke of a business and deserve the lowest star possible. You don't even have the courage to tell your clients about promises you cannot keep. DO NOT give business to these guys. If they can't even call you to cancel and stand you up imagine what they will do with your yard. What a embarrassment. I am glad you did not show up because you do not deserve my hard earned money and hopefully no one reading this review will give you theirs either. read more

John and his team did great work for a fraction of the price of most landscape contractors. There were a few minor mis communications but not enough for me to give it a poor grade or even subtract a star. When you factor in that you will probably pay far less than what a general contractor that pays other workers to do the job will charge you, any minor questions are just that, minor. The work was done great. The concrete slopes away from the property, and the drain system he added ties into the downspout and runs to the front of the house. The finish was excellent and the work was done in a timely manner. Any questions during the process I just reached out to the business line and Alex did a great job in getting them answered. During the process if you have questions and have a hard time reaching John just call the main number and speak to Alex and your questions will be answered. John gets real busy but his communication can improve but again call the main number and you will get answers. I rate it a 4.5/5 but since there are no half stars the 4.5 rounds up to 5/5 read more

My dad contacted h&j landscaping services to do some work on our backyard. John called me back a few hours to setup a free estimation. The estimation was quick and only took 15 minutes, in which john gave a reasonable quote for a new patio area and some retaining walls. We were planning to do some concrete or paver work too but it did not fit our budget. Pros: john and his team work very diligently and clean up after themselves ever day. Any concerns that we had was well received. The job was done quick we didn't really notice them. Cons: the price is not the lowest that we got a quote on, but the other landscapers did not any license so we couldn't trust them. Also their communication can be a little better. Overall I give them 5 stars, my parents really like what they have done and we would recommend them to anyone. read more

After weeks of searching for a landscaping company for the soon to be mother in law- I decided to hire H&J Landscaping Services. I had made appointments with 5 landscapers in the area and chose John because of his reasonable prices and more importantly his experience. He described in detail how things will be done, when and if there was going to be anything out of the norm going on and when. My project was to get some artificial turf and the soon to be in-law needed a new concrete driveway as well. John had quoted that he could finish the project in less than 3 weeks. He made it darn close to the deadline- and I'm a stickler for doing what you say and saying what you do. Good communication through the project, even on days that I wan't there to oversee things. These guys delivered on the both parts of the job and I was pleased by the outcome. Will hire them for a few other projects since god knows there is always stuff to be done. I was very pleased with the job done by Jimmy and his team. They expertly fixed a fence that was leaning outwards at the back of my property by replacing two of the original posts with longer ones that could be set deeper into the ground. The fence is now stable and solidly set. They also lay down weed block and wood chips over a substantial portion of my backyard, and lined the edges of a drainage ditch that runs parallel to my back fence with cobble. All of this was a lot of work, but they managed to do all of it in one day as promised. H&J Landscaping was a great company to work with--scheduled the job very quickly; was reasonably priced; and had a capable, hardworking, honest, and respectful team that did a terrific job for me. read more

I then asked for my money back week after week and still never got it back. Don't hire these guys, they'll take half your money and run while doing 0% of the job.
