Scallops - baked potato in the center and veggies in between the scallops
Shelby S.

I finally got to try this location and wow, so impressed! It's literally in the middle of nowhere but so busy. They have the same menu as the Buellton location- lots of everyone's favorites. We went on a Saturday and I'm so glad we had a reservation because we wouldn't have gotten a table otherwise. The place was packed! Our waitress was excellent. We felt super attended to. The scallops I ordered were delicious. My husband really enjoyed his steak. We brought a bottle of wine and paid the corkage fee, which was a great option. Parking was pretty easy right by the restaurant. Cell service became spotty the closer we got, so make sure you have the navigation loaded up before you get too close.

I had a magical experience at the Hitching Post (Casmalia). I ordered the Rib Eye ($68). The entree includes a tiny shrimp cocktail, salad, baked potato, garlic bread, ice cream and more. WOW! I feasted upon that juicy, thick steak. It's one of the best!! (Important: I recommend calling for a reservation because this spot fills up FAST! Thankfully, I was able to snag a reservation on the same day. Also, the cell phone internet service is bad because it's nestled in the steep hillside. Just be mindful.) I arrived at the Hitching Post (Casmalia) on Thursday (around 4:25PM). I had a reservation for 4:30PM (Opening Time). Parking felt rustic (but available) with its gravelly roads. I felt anxious since the business's spot felt like the middle of nowhere, but suddenly, huge swathes of cars arrived as it opened. Staff is very attentive, efficient, and professional. Despite the large influx of customers, Staff moved like a well-oiled machine. Without speaking, Staff would quickly appear, refill my lemonade, and vanish to their next task. The main entrees arrived within 30 minutes. As mentioned, I adored the Rib Eye ($68). It's juicy, clean meat. It reminded me of Prime Rib, but its sear/crust felt special. The chefs use an indoor barbecue pit using red oak wood, and it enhances everything! TASTY!! With each bite, it drips apart in my mouth. WOAH!! The Garlic Bread is also delightful; it's thick yet very fluffy with a friendly crunch. The Baked Potato breaks apart like butter. YUM! And the Salad is crisp with fresh croutons. Also, I selected the Vanilla Ice Cream with Chocolate Syrup, and it's BIG, cold, and THICK. It's a feast of food! On ambiance, the Hitching Post (Casmalia) is offers an upscale countryside aesthetic. There's taxidermy animal heads mounted along the walls. The location is very clean and regal. And the lighting is fairly dim. The music is very soft, and the main volume is chatter from excited groups and guests. Overall, I found unexpected magic at the Hitching Post (Casmalia). It's no wonder that it once won an award for being one of the top 10 Great BBQ Joints in the USA. I left with a fully stomach and a bright smile. If you love meat, I wholeheartedly recommend. 5 out of 5. GO!!!

This is a hidden gem in an area with no cell reception. Checking in will be very limited however, the food makes up for it. This was my second time at this location and each time has been an awesome eating experience. Be sure to make a reservation if you plan to go on a weekend as they are super busy and a walk-in seat is almost unheard of. They have limited full menu seating at the bar, but those seats are a few and far between as well. Best advice is to come on a weekday evening. I had the ribeye which came with a small shrimp cocktail, small side salad, baked potato, and a scoop of Rocky Road ice cream. As an appetizer, I tried the artichoke which was wonderful. I sat at the bar and was able to chat with the bartender Marley who gave some history on the location and talked about how much she enjoyed working there. This was great to hear. I will always come back at every opportunity if not for the food for the atmosphere.

My son loves this legendary establishment. No frills, no thrills; just good old school, real Santa Maria Style BBQ steaks. The price includes coffee/tea and some ice cream (Thrifty's). They don't have beans here :( I always miss them with the bread. But the quality and taste are superb. Get a reservation. Be prepared to wait even still. Tip well.

We had a fantastic family dinner. The food was cooked perfectly and we had 10/10 service. The vibe was so cool for a family dinner. We all enjoyed so much that any time we come this way, we're going to stop in for a meal. The start of a family tradition. Thank you Bianca

Glad we were able to make a reservation as it was really busy. Cool, vintage feel with cute bridge and barn in the back. Restaurant feels very squished, both table-to-table and seats within each table. I would expect to feel more comfortable while indulging in our delicious meal. Steaks were prepared beautifully and our appetizers, sides, drinks and dessert complimented our meats perfectly.

Another successful visit to the OG Hitching Post in Casmalia. One of the Central Coast's best gin martinis (Hendricks straight up: $12!) is a perfect accompaniment to their Twilight menu (aka early bird) sirloin steak ($43 with all the usual HP accoutrements: relish tray, bay shrimp cocktail, garlic bread, beans, salsa, soup or salad, ice cream and coffee). Perfect medium rare. My partner tried the French fries and they were spot on. I also adore their blue cheese dressing. I save some to put on my baked potato. I bought a jar of their seasoning to take home ($11 for a pound of it). The rose garden is in full bloom and the gentle bustle of the dining rooms with a view of the kitchen and grill is part of what makes this our happy place. Service is consistently friendly and excellent. Our server this night was Amanda and she rocks. A glass of the HP Pinot Hometown ($12) was also delicious. Stop at the Santa Maria or SLO Costco for 2 $50 gift cards for $79.99 - but tip for the full amount, please! We love you, HP!

Went for the third time to the Casmalia location Thursday night with my wife and my mother in law who was in town. I had their lamb chops and New York strip in the past (perfect). This time I got a top sirloin. Love the seasoning and love the tenderness of the steaks. You can count on a flawless sear and a perfect medium-rare. MUST GO if you're in the area.

Wow. I am an LA native so I knew nothing of the Hitching Post until I met my partner who was born & raised in Lompoc. She always told me the best steak was at the Hitching Post in Casmalia, and she was right! We decided to go to the Hitching Post for my partner's birthday and it lived up to its expectations. Service was great, and the restaurant gave a homey feeling. My partner's steak was cooked to perfection and my ribs were so perfectly seasoned. Cannot wait to go back!

Valentine's Day was my first time at The Hitching Post as an adult. It was very packed with tables fairly close together but I imagine that's to be expected with the holiday. We luckily got a table by a wall though which was nice. I really enjoyed the food, my steak was great but I really have to rave about the lobster, it was the best I've ever had. You get a side salad, shrimp cocktail, ice cream, garlic bread and a side included with your entree so I definitely think you're getting your moneys worth. I got a mango martini which was absolutely delicious and my partner got an apple crown cocktail of some kind which he loved. Nicole was our server and she was extremely sweet and pretty attentive given the usual chaos of Valentine's Day. I also want to give some attention to the bussers that night who very obviously were paying attention to their dining room. The speed in which they could flip a table (as in clear, clean, and reset) was so impressive. Definitely can't wait to come back again.

This place is in the middle of nowhere and somewhere. Casmalia, California. The food is all freshly cooked, of course, and the meats are all from the nearby farm . We had a big group go there of which they can service large groups in a separate room as well as small groups in the main area . The portion size is huge and you can more than share food if you want to. I had a delicious half stack of pork ribs and grilled artichoke, and they were outstanding! Our service that night was fantastic! If you want wine and dine on good beef products, this is an amazing place.

What a lovely and historical bbq restaurant this place is. I only stopped in to buy merchandise to giveaway at a Toastmasters event, but this place is totally worth the detour from the main roads. The restaurant is small and intimate inside, but lively and friendly around 5:30 pm on a Friday. There is plenty of parking and the service from the hostess desk is friendly. I can't wait to return with my friends and family to enjoy BBQ. In the meantime, I will be smiling up some bbq with my new seasoning and baste.

Is this the same place in the movie Sideways?

No, The Hitching Post II in Buellton was the one in Sideways.

Needs to make a reservation?

If you arrive as soon as they open you can generally get in without too much of a wait. But if you want to arrive later or have a large party I would certainly recommend reservations!

As of August 31, 2021, does the HP 1 still have a tented patio for dining, with heaters, and about how many tables?

They seated us right away. The dining room is one large room w basic tables and chairs, very casual. We were immediately greeted by our server Codey. She provided water, crackers, pickles, and salsa- pleasant surprises. She was the "Goldilocks" kind of server- not too much, not too little- just right. We ordered an old fashioned and a Cosmo rocks; both were tasty. Entrees were served with choice of baked potato, French fries, rice, steamed veggies, Plus salad w homemade dressing and bread. The prices seemed reasonable given the quality and all the extras. They offered a choice of complimentary 5-6 ice cream flavors for dessert. He ordered a top sirloin, it was boneless and a perfect medium rare. I thought it interesting that most of their steaks were boneless. They actually have quite an extensive menu. I ordered a pork chop which was tender and delicious; it was served w generous side of apple sauce. All in all, great meal and terrific service by Codey.

(If you sit in the middle of the easternmost dining room you'll have a great view of it.) I've had numerous steaks, their pork chops, lamb, and quail and it's all delicious. Right now I am absolutely in love with their duck. It's really good. The wines here are great as well. They make their own wines, and specialize in Pinot (their Big Circle Syrah is pretty good too). They really care about their wines and it's very apparent in their taste. The service here is excellent as well. This is an amazing place that we make sure to visit every time we're in town.

The lunch specials were reasonably priced; however, they do not offer a children's menu, so our 6 year old got a plain cheeseburger for $18. It was nothing special, but for a small child, it was not worth the price. We also ordered the grilled artichoke. I was most excited for this, but at $19 it was underwhelming. The artichoke was small, so the heart was even smaller. The dipping sauce paired with the artichoke was great, and I am not typically a creamy sauce person. Our oldest son loved the ribs lunch special. I like my french fries crispy, and they were perfectly crisp. My fiance and I shared the steak and fries meal, and unfortunately, the star of our meal was the french fries. Lunch is self-serveish. You order at the register, and the food it brought to your table. Water is self serve at the bar and wine offerings (including tastings) are at the bar. I likely won't be back for the food, but the outdoor setting is great for a glass of wine or tasting. They offer a full pinot noir tasting. If we weren't heading home right after lunch, I would have tried that, but will definitely save for next time.

The oak grilled open faced rib-eye sandwich was absolutely incredible. I'm not exaggerating when I say it had more flavor than Wolfgang Puck's CUT. The rib-eye was perfectly cooked to the medium temperature I requested, tender enough to bite through without a knife, and seasoned exactly the way Santa Maria style beef should be. So many places are too conservative with the seasoning these days, but they got it just right. Even the bread underneath the steak was perfect. It didn't even need salsa, but of course I tried it both ways. Honestly? I couldn't decide which I liked better because the sandwich was outstanding on its own. We also ordered the linguiça appetizer with garlic bread. The linguiça had that slight char from the grill that gives it so much flavor, and the mustard served alongside it was the perfect pairing. My mom ordered the prime rib sandwich with grilled onions and chose the 50/50 fries and grilled onions. The only minor criticism I have is that it wasn't quite a true 50/50 and could have used a few more grilled onions. Other than that, it was delicious. The pinquito beans have a little kick, so if you're sensitive to spice, keep that in mind. Personally, I wouldn't change a thing. The whole meal took me right back to growing up in the Santa Maria Valley cruising Broadway on Saturday while the entire town smelled like oak fired Santa Maria barbecue. We cook a lot at home, and we're pretty serious about our beef, so eating steak at restaurants is usually disappointing because very few places compare. That's why I was so impressed today. This wasn't just a good sandwich.. it was one of the best rib-eye sandwiches I've ever had. To whoever was running the grill today: outstanding job. You absolutely nailed it. I'll be thinking about that sandwich for a long time.

Then the main course came with our sides, a little pot of salsa and a little pot of beans. The filets were very tender, it not well seasoned. Baked potatoes were fine, but the mixed veggies were tasteless. There may have been some kind of bread, but I don't remember. Service was fine. But waitress really made out. We sat at a table for 2 in the raised section toward the back since there's less hubbub away from the front. - Menu: Moderate in size with lots of creative sounding selections. We had 2 suggestions for improvement - Add soup and definitely a few more choices for vegetarians. - Wine List: Excellent, but no bargain. Ember has a really nice group of wines indicating it's been curated with a knowing eye. However, prices are twice - or more - what you'd pay in a store. - Food: Excellent...if a bit heavy. My wife and I shared 2 appetizers - Pepper Creek Farm Heirloom Tomatoes ($18) and Fried Green Tomatoes ($23). Both were very good, but many added ingredients overpowered the main feature: Tomatoes.
