Charlotte Street is a little less well-known than streets like Saint George and Aviles Streets. However, it was an important part of the historic area of downtown St Augustine and remains one of the main streets today.
Recently in 2017, on a portion of Charlotte Street, human remains were found during a water line excavation. From what I understand, these people go back to the original settlers who came with Pedro Menéndez in 1565. This is only one of many excavation examples in St Augustine in general. However, when you walk the street today and enjoy the beauty of the buildings and the street itself...it makes you wonder about the history of it no matter what portion you are on. As the saying goes, "If these streets could talk..."
Today, you will find that this street is a little less traveled than other historic streets in St Augustine. It is just as beautiful and scenic...and probably even more so since you don't have as much foot traffic. Also, keep in mind that it is sort of split by the Plaza de la Constitución. There are wonderful restaurants on this historic street, in addition to beautiful private residences with architecture that is free to view (from the outside of course). Moreover, there are other businesses like a museum, bars, Hyppo, an art gallery, bed & breakfasts, and various shops to name a few.
There is street parking on Charlotte Street in addition to a few private parking lots as well. Plus, it is within walking distance of the fort and the parking garage. Of course, there is street parking all over St. Augustine as well nearby.
For those of you who have not checked out Charlotte Street or never heard of it...check it out! You won't be disappointed. read more
