It is a cool, if not a bit eccentric, piece of art located in downtown Jacksonville, Florida. I specifically headed downtown to see this cool piece of local art. Since it is in downtown Jacksonville, parking was a bit of a hassle. But I just had to go around the block once until I found a parking spot. I parked, tossed a few quarters in the parking meter and headed to check out this piece of art. A community's art helps give that community a personality. This art, while quirky, is definitely cool and I would definitely recommend it. Just head over to James Weldon Johnson Park and you will find it.

The MOSH Mouth is across the river in James Weldon Johnson Park, next to MOCA. This poor sculpture has been really vandalized. At the time of my visit, other Yelp photos had been posted 4 and 7 mos prior, and it was far less defaced. No holes kicked into the teeth, no green or white spray paint just about everywhere. It's a shame because the sculpture looks stupid with all the smartazz nonsense on it. And kicking holes in the structure? Grow up, that's disgusting. What a waste. Cool effort on the part of the artists and the city. But the trailer punks in Jax are destroying the presence of sculpture in town. If you want your city to grow some respectable culture, don't destroy it! Poor Double Dare-faced lady!

Located in historic downtown Sanford is a mural commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Sanford…read moreFire Department which is the second oldest Fire Department in Florida. Key West has the oldest fire department in the state. The mural was painted in 2023 by celebrated local artist Bruce Merrell. Merrell is a Florida native and he served in the US Army before attending art school. His art career has included graphic design, scenic art for theme parks, and faux finishes and murals. Merrell's work has a strong focus on wildlife and landscapes representing the natural beauty of Florida. You can find this 16 foot by 24 foot mural in Paulucci Park. It was funded by the Sanford Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and commissioned by the Public Art Commission of Sanford. The mural took five months to complete. The Sanford Fire Department was founded in 1873 and the mural depicts it's history starting in an old time sepia color before progressing into color. There is a mural key in front of it that gives more information about the significance of each image. Image #11 on the mural is Dr. Hezekiah Ross who became Sanford's first Black firefighter in February 1969. He was also the departments first Chaplain. Image #13 honors the firefighters who have been killed in the line of duty. You can learn more about the history of the Sanford Fire Department at the Sanford Museum which has a nice display and artifacts. You can even dine in the old fire house that has been turned into the restaurant The Station. Both are located close to the mural. Public art and history are two of my interests and I love how this mural brings both together. It also makes a great back drop for a photo so stop by and check it out if you find yourself in downtown Sanford.

You can find this installation where Seminole Boulevard and French Avenue meet. It is in the grassy swale next to West Kelly Quarters, an event venue across the street from Lake Monroe at the start of phase 2 of the RiverWalk. Gulls in Flight are stainless steel seagull sculptures mounted on steel poles of various lengths. Each gull has a wingspan of 6 feet. According to the artist "The polished surface of the gulls plays with the natural light and gives the illusion of motion from different angles." This installation was created for the City of Sanford by Massachusetts artist and metal fabricator, Dale Rogers. He creates all of his pieces in his Haverhill studio which he opened in 2002. Rogers creates art for municipalities, corporations, and private owners. He started out welding farm equipment for repairs on the family farm and then moved into welding sculptures. Dogs are another favorite subject matter. Former President Bill Clinton purchased one of his iconic American Dog pieces for his home. I love how this sculpture takes its inspiration from something you would see in nature. It looks lovely against the backdrop of Lake Monroe. Now that I am familiar with Dale Rogers work I spotted it in a few other spots around town. Count me a fan.

"Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve…read moreof the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." -Thomas Jefferson (1743-1926) The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States starts off with "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." and it goes on to guarantee freedom of speech, press, peaceable assembly and petitioning the Government. This first freedom, as it has been determined by courts, prevents government (federal, state and local) from treating one religion differently than another. No official religion and if there is to be something for one, it must be permitted for all. Easy enough until here when it took some effort to bring it about in practice. In 2013 after the "Community Men's Fellowship" were given permission to erect a monument of the Ten Commandments here on the grounds of the Bradford County Courthouse, the American Atheists sought permission to put up their own monument to their non-belief. It took a lawsuit for this to be settled and this is the result. They erected a 1,500-pound bench and a four-foot-tall obelisk engraved with quotes from Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and American Atheist founder Madalyn Murray O'Hair, as well as a list of ten punishments for breaking the ten commandments found in both Christian and Jewish holy books. The monument is with these others in the central courtyard. It's hard to miss. It is believed to be the first Atheist monument in the United States.
