I've been in Amsterdam for 6 weeks now and I haven't had any Asian food (I've had KBBQ, Sichuan, pho, Indonesian, "asian", and boba LOL) that's made me say "wow!" This is the first place that I can say is as good as what I'm used to in Los Angeles. I had the tekka-don, which is marinated sashimi tuna over rice -- the fish was fresh and the rice was the correct temperature. There was a light, sweet soy coating the whole thing. 4/5 stars. I also ordered some yakitori -- the chicken leg meat with spring onions was nothing short of relevatory. The pork belly yakitori I ordered was pretty amazing too. The place is difficult to find -- it's tucked into a hidden corner of the mall but it's worth searching for.

There are grills at the tables and you cook your own food. I recommend you visit the other Tanuki, as this one was a disappointment. Food: 2/5 I'm pretty sensitive to salt but even the other people I ate with found the meat to be too salty. Rumor has it that restaurants with not so fresh meat salt their food heavily to preserve it for longer... We had various types of chicken and pork, and most of it was mediocre. The pork neck was very tasty but it was the only one out of 7 meats. Service: 3/5 The waitstaff was very polite and attentive. Atmosphere: 4/5 They did a really good job with the renovation, the restaurant is beautiful. It is a nice mixture of modern and traditional Japanese decor. They even have those adorable booths where you need to take your shoes off. However, you can't eat atmosphere. Value: 2/5 Each 100g of meat was about 5 euros, which adds up... in the end, we decided to finish what we ordered and then finish our meal at McDonalds.

It does have sushi on a conveyor belt, but the variety was limited and the sushi was just ok. On the Sunday afternoon we were there, the rice was dry, and the fish was a bit old. It costs more than you'd expect, because it's hard to keep track of how much the sushi costs based on your colored plates. I thought the sushi making lady was nice because she was willing to give my 3-year old child plain balls of sushi rice without fish or anything on top, which is the only thing she was willing to eat. Other than that service was not so good. They forgot our drink orders and asked if we could get out of there by 5:30, even though their website says they are open until 6. When I pointed this out they said that they still had to clean up, and be out of the mall by 6 because that's when the mall closes and otherwise they'll be locked in, but that's not true. The mall does stay open after 6, so it looks like they just wanted to get out of there early, which is typical for Dutch customer service. Most of the people who we saw come in the restaurant were there to pick up food, and they had a lot of foodora posters around, so I guess most of their business is take out and delivery. It's a shame, because normally sushi conveyor belt places are fun, but this one was not.

Sumo Sushi & Grill was located conveniently close to our hotel, and with a sushi craving hitting me hard, I talked everyone into coming here for a late lunch. While they do have a la carte options, I felt like the all you can eat was a better deal, especially if you plan on ordering more than a couple items. Their fish selection is pretty limited, but I was excited that they had a decent number of tuna items. I went a little hard on that and ordered a bunch of tuna cut rolls and nigiri. They do have a lot of rules at this place, though we found the ordering process pretty straight forward, and the waiter was pretty helpful in explaining everything. There are only a couple items on the menu that cost extra, but be careful. Overall, I thought the sushi quality was pretty disappointing. The tuna nigiri was especially bad, with the tuna rolls being a little more appetizing. If looking for a sushi restaurant in Amsterdam, you can probably do better than this, at least I hope. If you don't mind low quality fish, this place will suffice, however, if you are used to good sushi, you'll likely be disappointed. Food aside, service and ambiance were both nice. No complaints in that department.

But the limitations and restrictions on the "all you can eat" aspect of it really bring it down. You can only order 5 times, like 5 pieces of sushi or 5 things. They have options, but not THAT many. Also, you're time restricted etc. It just makes everything less fun and kind of a pain. The portions are also small, so I mean, it really wasn't all I could eat.
