Started recently to come here for lunch regularly. Food has always seemed mediocre to me (too much sugar, too much salt, not the highest quality in the world for my taste), but it was basically okay, the staff were nice, the mood is good, and the location is very convenient. Today, though, I ordered an udon soup for lunch, which was simply too salty and sweet to even eat. I was very hungry, but still couldn't manage more than 2 or 3 bites. I have almost never returned food in a restaurant in my life! But this time I mentioned something to the waiter and asked if I could have something else instead. He said that I could if I paid for both the uneaten dish and the new one. I didn't want to pay twice so had nothing else and let him take the inedible (to me) soup away uneaten. So today, over a 9 Euro bowl of Udon, this restaurant has lost all our future business. We paid 30 Euros for my husband's sushi, my uneaten soup, and some water, and will never return. Needing a quick lunch fix during some training in Erlangen, some colleagues and I decided on Hiro Sakao just a brief walk down Allee am Rothelheimpark. The big standout on this place is that it has plenty of room, not like a majority of places I have gone to in Erlangen. I am sure this space is needed during the lunch time crowd. Hiro Sakao concentrates on Japanese and sushi dishes on their menu. In fact, their sushi menu is quite extensive. I decided on the Gyoza dumplings to start out with and the Ochi sushi roll for the main dish. I found both of them ok, nothing that I would rate as outstanding but definitely ok. It hit the spot for lunch. I found that after the order was taken, it was hard to get service to come back and attend to us. We had a particulary frustating time trying to secure our bill and get back on our way at the end. On top of that, if running your meal on a credit card, it seems a very slow process here as well, just to let you know (my colleague had a frustrating time with getting the transaction complete). Bottom line: An A-OK lunch spot, not outstanding but not bad either. There are a few speed bumps with service and getting transactions completed in timely manner but it serves the purpose for getting a lunchtime sushi fix. read more

Sushi-heaven! Just when I thought Sushi couldn't get any better, I found this place! Upon entering we had to wait a while to get seated, because neither the man standing at the entrance, nor the woman seemed to have time to even pay us the tinyest bit of attention. We were then showed to our table, one that was stuck within a row of others, all very close (uncomfortably close!) by. Thankfully we were the first ones here and had no neighbours to cuddle up to (yet). But it was when the waiter arrived to ask us for our order, bringing us a complimentary sprout salad, that the experience here turned to the better...to the fantastic rather! Our waiter was fantastic, extremely fast and absolutely nice. The food was hands down the best sushi I've ever had. We had Vegetable Tempura for starters and it was enough for three people. The sushi was served on a wooden boat, which was rather impressive - and it was so good! Later on I explained to someone that sushi is more than just fish and rice and realized we didn't even have sushi with just fish at all! We tried everything from duck, shrimps, omelette, spinach, chicken, etc. but we never went for the good old fish! This just goes to show what fantastic variety Hiro Sakao offers! The atmosphere was also nice, if a bit crowded, but the food was so good you end up focusing just on the food and the people sitting next/opposite to you. I would usually give the restaurant 4 stars, but the sushi was just so unbelievably good, I have to award that last star. Nevertheless, maybe they can do something about the seating issue...then it would be perfect! Sushi! - again Sushi! And I´m really loving that food but try to go for the better quality if possible - even if this means spending more money. My colleagues urged me to go there and what shall I say - good choice for Lunch. It was a very hot and sunny day and outside all the shady places were occupied. We had a very friendly waiter sitting us on a table inside, cool and cosy. We got handed the menu and shortly later the drinks were served. I went for one of the Bento Boxes and my colleagues ordered pure Sushi plates. Both an excellent choice. I loved it. Very good sushi and great deserts. The sesam-flavoured ice-cream tastes suprisingly decent. I'm planning on visiting here more often as I'd like to try out more of their sushi variations. They have a big variety of different sushi rolls and other Japanese dishes. One of the go-to-places when you want to eat sushi in Erlangen. After you order some food, you will get a small Soja salad for free as a Starter. They also have a some nice Sushi rolls for vegetarians. It's a very crowded place to dinner, so a reservation would make sense. When you want to have a quite and relaxed place to eat sushi Hiro Sakkao is defiantly not a place i could recommend you. But when you don't care sit right next to your neighbor table this is you place to get great Sushi in Erlangen. read more

Really good sushi. They always serve a small salad for free. They have also a great variety of other Japanese food (not only sushi). However, particularly on the weekend the restaurant is very crowded and very loud. You should make reservations for dinner in order to get a table. read more

My parents and I went there for my birthday celebration. Great location, especially the panoramic view of the park. The restaurant is quite spacious and uncluttered: without any columns or walls to interrupt the flow of space: rare traits in Erlangen. The interior design is very muted Zen-like as to enhance the calm experience. The menu is quite extensive and can be bit overwhelming, but one can select exactly what to order rather than compromising on one or two dishes. The service is quite decent and quick. The appetiser and sushi dishes we ordered turned out to be very good. We would definitely visit this restaurant again and again. Suggestion: best to phone in for the reservations, especially for the evening times. read more

The worst japanese food that i had in my life! The fish was hard and with an awful taste. And sushis were pretty big...no tasty!

I've been to this place so many times and unfortunately I have to give it one star for its ridiculous service! Even if you have a reservation you have to wait 20-30mins to be seated. Once seated it's impossible to get the attention of a waiter to order. If they do come to you, they are always in terrible mood. I have given this place quite a few chances and every time the service was just not worth the service. I would suggest to order on the phone and pick up the food rather than eating there to avoid the service nightmare read more
