I recently was there for Christmas present shopping because they have groovy stuff, patriotic merchandise and a Veterans and Military Discount. Merchandise selection, customer service and cleanliness was adequate. Hippies' owners like their Freedom so they have a daily Military and Veterans Discount as a token thank you to Veterans and GIs which provides resource to ensure Veterans (rare 7% of the population) and GIs (rare one-half of one-percent of the population) opportunity to participate in American Dream Veterans' and GIs' sacrifices have made possible for 100% of the population. The Hippie Movement peaked with the 1967 Summer of Love. As a Hippie myself, my Hippie friends and I read a lot, spent a lot of time learning and sharing our learning. We had container gardens over-flowing with vegetables and flowers and weed, and we brewed our own beers. Some had chickens. We became experts at salvaging and re-purposing. We traded and bartered as we had little cash. We loved classical and jazz music then invented our own blues, folk and rock music. We got around by walking, mountain bikes, our beloved VW "People's Car" buses or little put-put boats we'd salvaged. We were pro-Peace. We put on the holiday parades. We kept our word, oaths and promises. We helped out each other. We Honorably Served in America's Armed Forces where we started the Sir! No Sir! We were whimsical. We had very little debt. We gave ourselves and each other roots to grow and wings to fly. A good legacy for a bunch of bright, fun-loving and underemployed young Hippies. In the early 1980s, yuppies and their high-end Mercedes and Range Rovers and mountain of debt began to replace the Hippies. By the late 1990's there were only remnants remaining of the Hippie Culture. This Hippies store is a remnant. Another remnant is The Serial: A Year in the Life of Marin County, which I have an original copy of the book, a satirical novel by Cyra McFadden. Went into this place with my out of state buddy looking for a dry herb vaporizer. The 2 ladies in here (im assuming the hippies) were real friendly and helpful. The one took some time to explain to us the differences in models. She was never pushy to make a sale . Although my friend did not purchase the vaporizer , we did gain a lot of knowledge on them. Oh ok WOW I'm surprised that I'm the first to give Hippies a review! But I guess everyone else who'd been here is busy using their coveted items purchased from Hippies to YELP about what a GREAT place this is! OK where does one start...... At the parking lot?...... parking is super easy!! Right beside the store and has lots of room! The store...... prices are GREAT..... I'm mean REALLY GREAT! Selection is awesome on everything Staff was very eager to help me - check out was so fast I had to do it twice because as I was paying I seen other items I HAD to have.... There is SO much here to see that you should really just walk around and take it ALL in before you check out! Hippies might not be a shop for everyone...... but I think everyone can find at least something they like in this store. It's your typical "head shop" but with LOTS and LOTS of neat extras - so if buying a huge bong or corn pipe isn't your cup of tea...... they have lots of other things! Im going to have to explain the stars. This isn't a gift shop. Lets be frank. It's a head shop whose inventory mostly caters to herb paraphernalia. I'm not into the drug culture myself, but i came here for the incense and that alone is worth the go. They have an amazing stock and they blend their own oils. You can get custom blends too! And they are so amazingly cheap, way cheaper than the oils you get at the melting pot. They are not true essential oils, it's fragrance oils, some with essential oils, but they all have a carrier oil in them (i'm not sure what it is, all the oils seem dark). So, for a head shop, I give it 5 stars because it has everything you could need for smokeables from glass and wood pipes to gasmasks and lovely hookahs. They also carry whatever you need for hookahs like coals, oils and shesha. For a gift shop, the inventory is pretty limited. It's very true to it's name. Lots of tiedye and hemp clothes and stickers that are hippie and substance culture related, so it's exactly what you'd expect going to a store names "Hippies". They do have some incense burners and windchimes, a small selection of typical hemp jewelry, but no fascinators and nothing that makes we want to stay and shop. They layout of the store is also kind of trashy and feels cluttered, but not purposefully or in a comfortable way. Just like college dorm messy cluttered. So for the shop feel and a lack of selection for any other counter culture folks, it only gets 2 stars. I think a bit more invantory would dramatically improve this shop. Maybe some activity related stuff other than smoking, like hoops or fire dancers/poi things. Figurines would help too, and probobly books. Green items also tend to do wonders for headshops and counter culture shops these days. read more

I am very sad giving hippies such a low review, but my last experience with them was not pleasant. Hippies has been my favorite head shop because their prices and selection are awesome, they have unique handmade incense, and the friendly employees have a great knowledge of product. In fact I just bought a pipe there. However, all these things failed me today. What I got today was rude an employee who didnt know what the hell they were talking about. Ive never run into that guy before, but I wasnt impressed. There are a million head shops in reno and theyre all having sales for 420. I wont be back to this one any time soon. read more

My allegiance used to lie entirely with Hippies Pipes and Incense. prices on blunt wraps and glass are OK but the selection is a bit lacking -- it's a small store with a lot of different things. What I do really like is they sell local arts and crafts -- candles, crochet hats and scarves. One of the nice ladies working there actually makes the incense herself. Hippies is a great place to shop for tapestries, incense, candles, jewelry, and other odd gifts. Maybe some blunt wraps and a small piece of glass. #highdesertkush read more

Came to hippies yesterday for the first time ever I showed up 15 min before they closed I spent 35 dllrs between a lighter and a nail to smoke wax on I went home and the lighter was using an extremely crazy amount of gas per use so I decided to go change it the next day. Today I showed up because I wanted to probably switch it for a bigger one a little more expensive but for sure better quality. I turned on the lighter in front of the lady that was helping me and explained that I needed an exchange she just apologized and said the only one with power of doing so is the owners so I asked when would the Owner be there. To what she abswer not this coming Sunday but the next one. This is upsetting because right after we talked about it her lighter just stopped working and it was a pretty expensive lighter. Yeah, it's a head shop, so there's that. Know that going in. But it's a very good head shop with a nice selection of other odds and ends, too (i.e. candles, fragrance, jewelry, etc.) The staff is friendly and attentive, and prices are absolutely reasonable. I love this place! I have been coming hear for a long time. There Incense are the best and freshest you can get! (Butt Naked is the best in my opinion) The employees are always amazing. Ive even moved out of state and every time I come to Reno to visit family I always stop in for a re-up on Incense, take a look at what they have new in the store, and have a wonderful conversation with the great people that work there. Yes it is a head shop ... but I do not smoke anything so that part does not interest me at all (though the glass is pretty ). But they have incense and candles that will lighten and enhance any room . They have dresses and blouses that take this old(er) lady back to her youth and days of the world being all possibilities.... and all those colors. This is one of my favorite stores in the sparks/reno area. All of the staff is super nice and never treat me like i don't know what I'm talking about which is wonderful. Plus they have one of the best selection of random items from jerry bear costumes to pipes and incense.... love love love this place.
