Given a blank canvas, the brilliance and creativity and vision people have to repurpose a "post office " into a welcoming eclectic gathering gallery is something phenomenal! A work in progress, the basement offers retail shops such as bookstores, disc shop, bicycle shop and a fantastic curiosity shop. There is an early era barbershop, not male exclusive, restaurants, Tataima Shabu Shabu (5 stars), and more. Unfortunately we were held captive by a quarter stealing parking meter. It ate 8 quarters and gave us time for 4. . Note to everyone, there's free parking on Center Street. The basement is a fantastic place. Just allow yourself time to relax,explore and enjoy. read more

The Basement is a local marketplace located, as you'd expect, in the basement of Reno's historic post office. There are a few shops on the first floor, which was the post office itself and still has PO boxes. But head downstairs for over 15 businesses, ranging from beauty/salons, to artists, to bike repair, to coffee and juice, to pottery and home goods. A historic building that was a Post Office built in the 1930s with amazing art deco and some original post boxes. So cool. If you are into architecture or history this is the building for you to check out. So glad that this building was repurposed into an eclectic space. The first floor and basement have these quaint, interesting, and eclectic shops. Find, a restaurant, speakeasy, salon, coffee shop, art store, and more. Shop, dine, or explore other businesses or history. The owners are starting at the bottom and working up. I can't wait to see what new shops will open up here. There is metered and handicapped parking next to the building. However, since this is downtown Reno parking is almost always filled. I would love to read more history about this location and perhaps the owners will even create a museum floor with the history along with a gift shop. read more

This is a pretty good use of this space. Having said that, they have to rely on word of mouth advertising since there is very little foot traffic in the area. Quite a few small businesses have come and gone since it opened. I wish all of these shops, stores, and restaurants the very best. Worth going there for in the Summer of 24: Papa What you cooking, Juice Bar, and the E-bike Hub. It absolutely blows my mind on how rude these business owners can be. My coworker and I went to The Basement for our routine coffee from Maple Moon Company. When we arrived, we see a group of people having what looks like a meeting. As we were talking to the barista, some lady had called out and said "Excuse me, we're having a meeting." Excuse me?? I'm trying to place an order?? The barista informed us that it was all the business owners having a meeting and that it was very indeed rude for them to say that to us paying customers. Well maybe these business owners should conduct their meeting in a more quiet setting, not in a public setting where people are meant to be. Take your hard earned money somewhere else because they obviously don't want it. read more

The Speakeasy is so good and so much fun! Loved the Champagne flight with so many flavors. The shops include a crystal store, barber shop, and clothing store to name just a few. Hidden Unique Space: A Gem in Reno, NV I stumbled upon this hidden gem in Reno, Nevada - a unique space. I quickly noticed that this place wasn't just a coffee shop there were a few restaurants and stores that lined the space. I went on a Sunday and most of the shops were closed. There were cozy seating arrangements right in the middle. I found myself wandering from one corner to another. The coffee shop was cute and cozy, the staff were friendly. I'm a huge fan of this building back when it was still the downtown post because art deco was just phenomenal; it really is a beautiful building with its own unique personality. The city needs to celebrate the artists that inhabit this space and high light this transformed building more. I visited The Basement this afternoon and noted a few shop spaces are already vacant and there's not a whole lot of foot traffic going through the building for a Friday afternoon; it's such a shame, it's a really cool place. read more

The Basement is a cool and unique space. Located in the basement level of the old downtown Post Office. First floor is a West Elm. In the Basement you will find a small variety of boutique stores such as Vida Coffee (see my review), Nordik (Scandinavian home decor), Seven Troughs Distillery bar, and a few other places. It's a great place to peruse a few local businesses. A few of those businesses have changed in the times I have visited in the last two years, but they usually get replaced with an equally cool spot. read more

I stopped by here during my stroll through the downtown area because I've heard so much about it. The space contains a restaurant, coffee shop, brewery, a men's salon & barbershop, a photo studio, and more. I was greeted by the employee at the coffee shop after coming off the straits despite not stopping in there. I thought that was pretty cool. It looks like not everything is open just yet but I imagine when it is it's going to be a nice hang out space. I would definitely come back and try out the coffee shop and salon. read more

This is a hidden treasure in downtown Reno! I found it via a local Instagram page and couldn't wait to check it out. It's a mixed use space with several shops. We went on a Sunday afternoon and a few of the shops were closed. The outside of the building is unassuming. I had driven past it a few days earlier and didn't realize it's where the basement is housed. Parking is easy. You walk through a single door then head downstairs into the basement. I love that they are dog friendly and I was able to bring my pup. I had a Chai Latte at the cafe and it was hot and delicious. The nail salon was closed but looked so cool with their copper tubs to soak your feet. Every employee we encountered was so nice. I'dd love to come back and try the Speakeasy, too. It has a very cozy atmosphere and great looking cocktails and food. read more

I purchased a pretty bracelet for my friend @ The Helping Moon and got some delicious rooibos tea @ Maple Moon Coffee Co. Came here last night for a Yelp Event. All the local stores stayed open for invited guests. This is a terrific spot filled with local vendors. Need a hair cut, get it here Pedicure ... yep! Coffee, chocolate, salads, exercise, gifts, and of course, there's a bar. We visited each vendor ... suggest you do they same. Whether for holiday gifts for you or a loved one. Also, I alway bring visitors down to the Basement. This landmark building is just awesome. Check out the upper level West Elm and see all the are deco hallways of this 1930's US Post Office building. And if you can't find anything to eat in "The Basement" you are right downtown next to the Pioneer theater and lots of good "street level" places to eat. read more

The Basement is one of the coolest spots in Reno. During my most recent trip, I stumbled upon a Yelp listing for Pantry Products and was delighted to see that the old post office basement had been turned into a hip haven of stores, event space, and a place to hang out. I wish I had come hungry! There's a chocolate and crepe shop and very cool-looking coffee spot. There's also a speakeasy (though not so mysterious to find) with lots of good-sounding cocktails and leather seats. I did make my way to Pantry Products and was delighted to see so many different products and scents. It was also nice to oggle all the pretty housewares at the Scandinavian store. There's also a lot of information in the hallways about the post office as well as Reno overall. It was down in the Basement that I made the connection between Reno and Burning Man and could start identifying street art I had seen to pieces that were originally at Burning Man. Makes sense given the proximity, and it was cool to see photos of many pieces all in one place. Definitely check it out if you're downtown. read more

Huge fan of the basement! The location being off downtown Reno is nice. We have two dogs and we love to stroll by the river, stopping in the basement is great because the dogs are allowed! The building is quirky and cute. Everyone posts about how it's an old post office but you really don't get the full picture until you go. There are vaults and it's really cool! I LOVE that you can support a bunch of businesses at once. That might be my favorite part. The communal area allows you to get lunch at one place, while also getting a coffee at another spot, while also getting a drink somewhere else. It's really great. Cool, quirky USPS Office turned into an artsy retail space that includes West Elm, Global Coffee, Seven Troughs Speakeasy, Sugar Love, and a handful of other stores. The structural designs and historical aspects largely remain the same like the mailboxes, bathrooms, elevators, etc. Kinda creepy yet hip. There's a huge communal area in the basement where lots of people can gather or work on their laptops. I especially love the artwork on the walls and there's one wall with historical information about Reno and the post office. There is plenty of metered parking, making it easy to come visit. read more

I had a falafel sandwich. It was really dry (more sauce needed?). I also ordered garlic fries - yes! They were really chunky potato wedges, cooked perfect, and very tasty! The staff were very friendly. I'm new to town, and just received the recommendation from a city employee I met in downtown Reno. It's basically a nook with several restaurants (my initial choice was the Indian food, but they close between lunch and dinner hour). There was also a pizza eatery tucked away in a corner. read more

What a totally cool place - literally and figuratively. New life for this beautiful old post office. At the time of writing, the upper floors are being converted to office space. West Elm is on the main floors. There are small shops, food and drink places, and exercise joints in the basement which is known as, well, The Basement. Take the elevator at the north end of the building downstairs. Rawbry and Global Coffee have seating in their shops. There is also common space seating, a small amphitheater, and a history section. Thank goodness this structure was not torn down. Take time to look at the architectural details, which are everywhere. On the tables on the first floor you may see what appear to be swastikas. They are not. They are Buddhist symbols. There is a parking lot, ramp, and unisex accessible restroom downstairs. Kudos to those who fought to save this piece if history downtown and breathe new life into it. read more

Yep it's a basement The Carters bought and have been restoring the old Art Deco Reno post office downtown on the Truckee River. Seems they started at the bottom and are working their way up. The entrance was a little tricky to find, even with all the signs, it's in the east corner along the river. You come down the stairs and discover an under world of new and various small shops. We hit Rawbry,a unique juice shop. Saw the coffee shop, small clothing store and flower shop. Checked out Sugar Love's selection of chocolates. And spent some time checking out a hallway with some great old photos of various Reno locations and what they look like today. It was my favorite spot in the basement. The area doesn't quite look completed, looks like another one or two shops might still be going in. On the south side of the building in metered parking for two hours. If you are checking the place out on Saturday, park at the courthouse parking lot for free for the entire day and not be rushed thru the shops. read more

Four stars with room to grow! Just like The Basement! They have a handful of good businesses here. Global Coffee, Sugar Love Chocolate, KJB, a florist and the big star of the moment. RAWBRY Juice Bar. If you have ever been to a big city and been able to hang out at market in an old refurbed building you will know exactly what the Basement is trying to do. It's looking promising, and they seem to be doing it right. And doing it right means lots of time, work and money being invested in this place. Can't wait to see the "finished" product. But right now, they have great ideas and a great beginning. I hear some rumors of a salad bar place in here...and maybe some sort of performance space? Not sure if those are true or will come to fruition but it would be cool to get a salad bar place in town. Parking is a little tight right now, but they have tons of street parking nearby until they open up the full parking lot. It's also a little "new constructiony" smelling, so just be ready for some strong industrial smells for the time being. Every old space made new and clean and usable is a great addition to our city. If our future looks like this...we got something special coming. read more

Not what I envisioned, much smaller in fact. Hipster, small, expensive. The free parking lot on the Northside: Don't do it! You have to back out - there is no turnaround, or through, AND you back onto Center street, just don't. I parked on the South side, and had to feed the meter. Plenty of parking at lunchtime though if you want to pay. Seating consists of a large long table a few 4 tops and a few 2 tops. A sofa, chair and industrial coffee table. There was coffee, and Rawbery (they were only taking cash the day we went) There is CHOMP - salads made to order - at $15 seemed steep, but it was delicious and I'd have that again. I wish for more food, more shops, more art, more...more. Seemed a bit of a let down to be honest after all the hype. On Friday at lunch there were about 10 customers down there. Not busy at all. Maybe I went at the wrong time? I wouldn't go out of my way to go again, but if a friend wanted to check it out I would go with. read more

I really like what they did to the old post office in downtown Reno. The Basement is exactly what it is - the basement of the old post office. I think it's a pretty hip place. Very forward thinking in this town of Reno. It's like a strip mall only cooler with an industrial underground feel. There is a raw juice place down there "Rawbry" and a really cool apothecary place that uses essential oils and non toxic formulas for everything from body lotions to bug spray. There's a bar, a salad bar type restaurant (it wasn't open), clothing shops, and a boxing gym. The tables are like communal tables with outlets for your electronic gadgets; computers, cellphones, etc, etc. If I had to work in an office, this would be a cool place to work from. A coffee bar is located here. A cool tip from a fellow Yelper - you can park in the courthouse parking on Sunday and not pay parking fees. Scored! Thank you! Love it! The concept is very real. They build because the want to support local and to improve our beautiful city. As any business there are ups and downs, but the place is amazing. Parking is minimal, but what's wrong with parking a little further and breathing in some fresh air will do all of us some good. A great place to work on homework or work itself. Very inspiring and they have a lecture hall you can book and use for presentations and performances if they let it. West elm is fabulous too. I love checking it out whenever I go down there. I had no idea this place existed - I mean, I knew shops had opened up in here, but this is like Reno's biggest secret! Downstairs from West Elm (formerly an old post office), there is a warren of little juice places, coffee shops, bars and boutiques. Decor - think industrial chic, sort of like NYC's Chelsea Market. What I loved was the fact that our Sunday morning book club was able to get a huge table and have a great conversation without yelling. We found a spot above the auditorium. The only funny thing was when the heater kicked in and the vent above us started blowing air into my eyeballs and napkins went flying, but no big deal. Lots of seating spaces, so next time you and a friend want a sweet spot to sit down and relax, come here! I believe there is free wifi. read more

I came in here one night with a friend Rennie for a piano event and found out after we arrived it had been cancelled. After looking around we found out a different event was going on and a free dinner was being served. Being vegan I was a little worried about what I would eat and then I saw the Rawbry which had vegan choices. I ordered the toast with hummus and avocado and it was amazing. The toast was a very big slice so I was full after I finished it. My friend who is not vegan but Paleo was looking at it with her mouth watering, lol, she chose to eat the free dinner that was offered on the other end.
