Excellent customer service. I had a problem with a set of shrubs I purchased declining before the year warranty expired. They worked with me, trying to get them healthy again. And standing behind their material when the shrubs did not respond, extending the warranty for me, and finally replacing them all. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE! ZERO STARS- I went in Friday picked out 2 trees and tagged them - as instructed by the salesperson. The following day, our landscapers went in to pick up the trees. The wrong tree was loaded on their trailer. We went back to the yard to ask what happened and the older blond lady at the sales counter was rude and loud talking over me stating the trees that were loaded onto the truck were ones we purchased when we both were standing in front the tagged tree left behind in the yard. She then said if I wanted that tree ( the one I tagged and was left behind) I had to purchase it. A few minutes later, my landscapers arrived to speak with this lady and she then told them this tree was not available. Another sales guy came out of the office and said they could not do anything as the owner was on vacation. Unbelievable. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUSINESS. HINSDALE NURSERY IS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE!! I had my landscaper plant 4 north pole arborvitae on 5/26/23 and by 6/19/23 they were dead. You have to work really hard to kill a 5 foot bush. I have been gardening for 40 years and have never lost a large bush let alone 4 in such a short period of time. When we brought this to HN attention they were less than concerned. I and my landscaper had been told that unless they planned the bushes they would not be covered. Given the fact that they died so quickly we thought perhaps HN would work with us to fix clearly a defective product, but no. This company used to treat their customers with respect. Not a single employee I spoke with said how unusual or showed any concern for me. This kind of treatment of customers (both retail and landscapers) will eventually catch up. Shame on you! read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! I paid $400.00 to have these people plant 4 dogwood trees in my backyard. 6-8 months later several of them died and had to be replaced. After another year they all died. I decided to replace them myself with another type of plant and found out why they all died! They never removed any of the mesh or packing materials!! The root balls were just as they were when they were planted !!!!! Worse yet, when I contacted them, they claimed that they were following Morton Arboretum protocol by leaving the packing materials on!!! You can research ANY planting article online that says the complete opposite!!!! What a complete farce!!!!! I was a little deterred by the bad yelp reviews for this place especially regarding customer service. However, this place is the most convenient place for my parents and our family friend had good experience with them, so we decided to give it a try. We purchased 3 fruit trees and a blueberry bush in late April. We got a peach tree, one bing cherry tree, and another non self-pollinated cherry tree. We also had their people install the trees for us. The blueberry bush was doing great. Some berries are turning blue already and hopefully they will be tasty. The bing cherry tree was strong. We didn't have any problem with that one since it was planted. The non self-pollinated cherry tree was the weaker one. It didn't have lots of leaves when it came. After 1 week, the leaves were droopy and some of the leave buds were turning brown. I contacted Hinsdale Nurseries regarding this tree and they were friendly, professional, and helpful. First, they gave me some watering advice, which we followed; and then Jose (the guy who planted our trees) came out to our place, checked if the tree was doing okay, and showed us how to water. Unfortunately, nothing really changed after another week or two, so they replaced that tree with another fruit tree for us free of charge. Peach tree was doing fine by the time it was planted, but we started to notice some dry branches recently. I contacted them again and was given some advice. The tree is likely undergoing some stress and we are still monitoring it. Hopefully, it will look healthy again soon. read more

I went in knowing what I want. It says contractor sales on the door, I am a licensed contractor. I looked at the emerald green bushes and they were a little more than other places so I asked about my contractor discount. The older ladies behind the counter not even the one helping me laughed and said you will need to work with your local landscaping company to get this contractor discount, which didn't make any sense to me for a savings. I explained I live up the road and would like to give them the business if given the contractor discount and the young man that was helping me looked at the lady and she said no discount. I said thanks for your time and walked. The bushes full price would have been $630 in total. I loathe this place. I don't even understand why they are open to the public. The employees have absolutely no interest in helping you out, answering a question, and have lost any love of gardening or horticulture years ago if they had it at all. Staff here are beyond rude, unfriendly, and lack any understanding of customer service. You practically have to beg them to let you give them your money. And they don't feel they need to improve because they do have great selections, huge stock and the plants, shrubs, trees always are in great shape. Why be friendly when you make bank regardless. This place is great for plant nerds like me. Plants are arranged by perennial/annual/tree/shrub and shade/part-shade/sun, like many places, but then alphabetically by genus. So bee balm is under M (for Monarda) and not B. The signs say how much moisture the plants need, and if they are native or not. Since I am an even bigger plant nerd, i wish they noted which ones were edible, but that's me. Also I noted they don't really have organic stuff here, which is disappointing Place is huge though. Lots of plants, literally. Prices aren't bad, but I had a groupon so that was better. Service was pretty good as there are many people wandering around, as well as catalogs and maps. I'm trying to tap my inner Mother Nature. That's easier said than done. I enjoy flowers, I just don't like all the work that goes into it. So potted plants on my front and back deck is the way I go in the spring and summer. They have a wonderful variety of perennial flowers at HN. They have a wonderful variety of just about anything you'd want to plant--trees, shrubs, plants, flowers. This is a gorgeous nursery. Everything is laid out so nicely. There are plenty of folks taking care of all the greenery and there's a map to show you where different kids of plants/trees are on the grounds. I also love the wagons that customers get to pull around to carry all their plants and material. They have a nice selection of pots and organic potting soil. They offer plastic wrap and/or sturdy boxes to keep things tidy in your car too. Great place. It is a little pricier than what I'd find at nurseries closer to home. Even with a groupon I found that I could have probably scored more plants at Home Depot or my local nursery for the same price I paid. But friendly customer service and well kept plants were still a big plus. read more

The flowers here are hands down, some of the most beautiful I have seen in a long time. Every plant I saw was big and healthy, obviously well taken care of. I only came here because I bought a Groupon for flowers and I am so glad I did. Every herb I purchased is still doing fantastic in my garden. The herb prices were pretty reasonable too at 2.95 for the pint sized containers. We purchased a few annuals too which are still doing fantastic in my hanger, also reasonably priced. The prices jump way up though when you start getting into the bigger stuff. There was a Japanese Maple for about 400$ that was no more than 4 feet tall and plenty of other super pricey trees and shrubs. I am sure the quality is phenomenal, but poor people like me can't afford 400$ bushes. All in all a nice place. read more

I brought in some clippings and pictures of shrubs I needed to match from my yard. They pulled out an index and showed me a couple to help me determine what I was looking for. Their office staff was great. I felt like I was paying a premium compared to going to Home Depot, but the plants were very healthy and even my leftover flowers that are still in the flat a week later (still haven't made time to figure out what to do with my extras) look to be thriving. They came out fairly quickly to give us a "plan" for a few things in our yard - which they charge you $150 for; that can be applied to a purchase. That seemed fair enough to us, we appreciated the suggestions; but then we found the prices to be very very high. We agreed on a fairly small plan very quickly, but they wouldn't commit to when it would be done and waited at least 2 months. Also, the tree they planted looks terrible. Kind of like it was the last tree on the lot. Unshapely, hoes, some branches already brown. They had us, what were we going to do? The other bushes don't seem such good quality either. On the plus side, the crew that came to plant was very nice, they wanted to make sure we were satisfied with the placement, explained the care well. I thought it would probably take about 1.5-2 hours for them to take out 2 bushes, then plant 3 small bushes and 1 not too big tree. I think it took 4-5 hours (which did include at least one break.) We bought a tree(installed) from Hinsdale Nurseries two years ago. Through no fault of the tree stock, it leafed out this year and then died (after the warranty period). I called Hinsdale Nurseries to get some advice from them and was told it may take a couple months and the tree may come back... and to keep in touch. Before leaving on vacation, I sent an email with a picture of my still-dead tree. Yesterday morning, Hinsdale Nurseries showed up, new tree in hand, and replaced the dead one! They far exceeded my expectations.... I've always thought they were great from the perspective of variety and health of stock... but am adding service and standing behind their products to that...I'd highly recommend them. read more

In a word, I would describe this place as pretentious. Hinsdale nurseries is the queen bee from high school that made sure you knew you weren't to sit at her lunch table. Truely snobbery at its finest. Let me explain. As a new homeowner and amateur gardener, I ventured to Hinsdale nurseries in search of hydrangeas. They have a wonderful variety of very healthy plants, and while more expensive than the average garden center, I felt it was one of the best selections I've seen. Being a novice, I sought out an employee to get directions on planting the three bushes I was to purchase. Even though I had been there for well over an hour at this point, no one had stopped to ask if I needed help with anything. I had to track down someone to help me. The person I found was rude, impatient, and very clearly annoyed that I would ask for instructions on how to plant a hydrangea bush, and what kind of sunlight it would need. It was clear that if you have any questions, you are expected to schedule an appointment with a landscape designer to have them answered - a $50 fee for 30 minutes. Excuse me? I'm spending $150 on these plants, and you can't give me 5 minutes of your time to answer two simple questions? Well, I bought the bushes anyway and figured out how to plant them with the help of Google, and nearly a year later - they've done wonderfully. Late in the fall, I went back to Hinsdale nurseries to purchase some anti-frost spray for my box woods and mulch for insulation of said hydrangeas. Everything had been pretty much closed up at this point in the season, but their office was open and offering the aforementioned items and some winter bulbs. The young man who checked me out was extremely condescending, talked down to me, and was clearly trying to make me feel stupid for asking about one of the products. Also, I brought my parents with me, and while I was purchasing the items, my dad later commented on how a female employee watched my mother like a hawk, almost as if this frail old women was going to take off with all the paper-white bulbs in the nursery. Seriously? Needless to say, I do not plan on returning for a multitude of reasons. Also please consider that they will not offer their 100% guarantee on their plants unless their gardeners plant them. I gave them two stars, because the plants I purchased are top quality, and they do have many hard-to-find varieties. But do keep in mind you'll most likely pay up to 3-4 times what you'd pay at another garden center or big box store (for example, Global Blue Spruce runs for $200/bush here, while Pesche's in Des Plaines offered them for $50/bush, without the attitude). :-) Hinsdale Nurseries, if you're reading this - I apologize. How dare I, from the unwashed masses of Downers Grove, attempt to lower your standards. I should have respected the high class establishmeant that you clearly are. I'll be sure to wear my best fastener, and bring my Royal Doultin china with hand-painted periwinkles for high tea (pinkies up!), should I ever have the privilege of being in your graces again. I heard about this place through Groupon otherwise I would have never known it was here. Madison St. is kind of off the beaten path of Willowbrook unless you're from the area. This place is way over priced for the quality of product they have. Some items were unmarked and not priced. I asked one lady where ground cover was, she grunted and pointed. Great service too! When I went to check out, the same surly wench bellows out in front of all the customers, "I knew we shouldn't have taken those Groupons". First time I have ever complained on Yelp, but this astounded me. I called this place twice to verify facts. I called to price 5 yards of mulch spread. No designing. No weeds. All hardscape is already there. All I needed was mulch dumped into my perennial beds. I was told that I had to pay $100 up front to have someone come out to look at the job. I would get the $100 applied to the job if I went with them. So I asked "100 bucks! So for $100, what service is being rendered? I'm not asking for a design". Just mulch spread. Any of your truck crews could size this up on their way back in tonight. It would take them 2 minutes. I was told, "That's how we do things". I brought up two obvious scenarios. I questioned; "So, if I got a job that Hinsdale Nurseries doesn't want, they can just bid obnoxiously high, and when I refuse their proposal, they still line their pockets with my $100? I was told, "That's how we do things, sir. I questioned, Your estimators can always bid a little high. They can bid $575 on a job that also has a $500 proposal and because of the $100 up front, the customer is blackmailed into using you. She said, "We don't call it blackmail, sir. Terrible! Avoid at all costs. Had a landscape architect design - Dawn. The job was delayed 1 month. We commissioned a fire feature and 4 trees. The crew then installed the wrong design. Left a mess. Threw a tarp down a window gutter promoting water into our basement. Job is not finished yet. Needless to say if they can't get their act together and get the right job done cleanly and correctly there will be more than a bad review. This place should be avoided at all costs!!!!!! We've bought some of our flowers here for the past few years. I love wandering around looking at what they have. That being said, we were there Thursday, and while we were wandering around, a worker came up to us and told us they were closed. It was 5 and we needed to check out. I was shocked they closed at 5 and disappointed we had to leave. I would think they'd stay open later during the busy season. Today Ubaldo, Miguel and Eduardo from a Hinsdale Nursery came out to install a new tree I had purchased. They encountered a series of unexpected problems created by a previous landscaper. This caused them to work twice as hard as they normally would have to install the tree. They were cheerful, kind, and set about getting the situation corrected. They are very professional and good at what they do. They have a wonderful selection of healthy trees at Hinsdale Nursery and Jean in the landscaping department is great about keeping you posted on delivery status. We just had three trees installed by Hinsdale Nursery. The staff at the location were very knowledgeable and helped us choose the types of trees that would flourish in our front yard. They even helped us to choose the trees from the lot. The men that installed the trees were professional and courteous. They worked hard and left our front gardens very clean.
