I spent 2 grand sending my vintage jewelry collection to these thieves. The catalog was a disaster in every way and did not say what we had agreed upon. I don't know why they had me take 3 days and all that money to send my entire collection qhen they already hd photos and inexplicably listed only half the items and not even the best! I pulled the whole thing and they made me pay another $1k for the return. Ebay photos or my own would have been far better. The head of the dept called me when the pieces arrived to say what an astounding collection it was. The catalog crapped it out. STAY AWAY!! read more

Leslie Hindman staff disregarded 3 requests to see the artist's signature (verso) on an oil painting featured at one of their public auctions. They did respond to my initial emailed request, but only sent additional photos of the FRONT of the artwork (the artist's signature is on the BACK and I had specifically asked to see the back side of the painting to confirm its authenticity prior to bidding.) Follow-up messages by me as the auction start neared were ignored, and I never was able to see the artist's signature. To add insult to injury, when I threw caution to the wind and did submit an internet bid (through the Leslie Hindman website platform), my bid was not accepted and the painting was sold to a floor bidder. I expected better from this auction house. As the saying goes, "Fool me once ..." read more

HAVE YOU EVER HAD YOUR TEETH PULLED WITH NO NOVOCAINE? I recently decided to give this company another chance. Boy, what a mistake!!!!!!!!!! I do not know about their live auction experiences but if you are thinking about bidding on-line through Live Auctioneers, you might want to think twice. I won 2 separate lots a couple of weeks ago and am still waiting for them to arrive. From start to fining, what they have put me through has been the absolute worst on-line auction experience I have ever had! Customer service? What customer service? Understand this and understand it well; This company has one motto and one motto only; "Whats yours is mine and whats mine is mine" Greedy pompous and egotistical! read more

I recently purchased some jewelry from this place. The online pictures and description do not give full details of items. Upon receiving them I noticed that one stone is broken. I sent an email to them. Nobody respond to my inquiry. With a high price payment I would expect a better service from them. I would not recommend this auction house to anyone else. read more

It seems that either that success or its sale to Sotheby's has overpowered Leslie Hindman. Earlier, I understand that the staff were responsive. Seems no longer to be the case. We had fine pieces which we were interested in consigning. We submitted our information online as requested with all the necessary information (including photos). NO REPLY. We called and asked about our submission and were told that a Leslie Hindman staffer would call us back. NO CALL We called a second time and were given the email address of the staff who was assessing our submissions. We sent an email and asked for status of their review. NO RETURN EMAIL. How droll is that? Alas, however, for those wishing to consign or sell good quality antiques, Leslie Hindman is not the only place in Chicago to do that and, I add, those other "less successful" places are wholly more responsive. read more

I am so shocked this auction house doesn't have a better rating, but also I have only purchased through them never consigned. Their descriptions are very accurate and the hammer prices are usually fair. I can understand some of the reviewers being unhappy with the hammer price, who doesn't want the most for their items. I look at many auction house catalogues and Leslie Hindman is one that I wait for. It would be nice if they accepted cards but other than that if you're a collector and Leslie Hindman holds auctions of a genre you're interested in I would recommend bidding with them. read more

There are so many fake paintings which is a disgrace for any auction house, particularly one of the largest in the Midwest. When they do have auctions there are no condition reports on line, no photos of the back, the signature, close up of problem areas, no information of any kind of provenance. A gallery owner warned me of the unethical practices of this place, which I won't repeat here. I have collected for 12 years and cannot believe that this place and so many auction houses are allowed to exist with blatant fraud. Not all of their paintings are fake but mixed in liberally with some authentic ones. read more

I consigned 2 items and could not be happier with the results and care taken. I really felt like my keepsakes were well taken care of and secure. The estimated prices were realistic and the catalog and web site had excellent photos. Everything was handled in a very professional manner and with great detail. The communication was always fast and current. The best part is the check came quite quickly after the sale. I am getting ready to bring some more items in. read more

I wanted to buy one thing. Submission of tenders and accept the form for approval. Writes a second time, asking for approval, after 20 minutes I send reminders. Nothing happens. Writes several times without response. Just wasted time read more

I've worked at and bought and sold in auction houses all over the world. LHA is among the best I've worked with. I've sold hundreds of lots there for good money there in the last ten years. I've had nothing but great service from a world class staff. I've rarely been disappointed with what my pieces have sold for, and even then, it's up to the market, not the fault of the company. read more

Was a bidder on yesterdays auction which was stopped at one point due to technical difficulty. About 200 lots latter the item I wanted to bid on came up. I bid extremely quickly and none of the bids were recognized. I was prepared to bid 100% more than it sold for 3,000.00. I notified the auction house and they sent a nice form email and said they were having technical difficulties and other bidders were unhappy also. (sorry). I am certainly glad I was not a seller because they got Screwed. Seems to me that the auction should have been postponed until all the problems were fixed. read more

I have collected art for 13 years and also sell on ebay and privately. I have bought about 500 paintings from about 30 auction houses, and avoid hundreds of them, especially in Florida. I have only bid on line and on the phone, which obviously is not the best ways. Getting extra photos from auction houses in cumbersone and I don't recall how that has been with Hindman's place. I have bought a few paintings at Hindman. Hindman's has had some fine paintings but like most auction houses I am becoming quite skeptical. When I see 4 Edouard Cortes paintings, and maybe 5 Antoine Blanchard paintings and also see the same trend elsewhere then I have for about 5 years started questioning many places that are considered top tier. There are many fakes out there by numerous artists, like Le Pho, Vu Cao Dam, Henry Gasser, Constantine Kluge, Andre Hambourg, the De Longpre brothers, the Dufy brothers, David Burliuk oils, Simbari, frankly almost every known artist. I think virtually every auction house is not careful about examining the paintings for authenticity, not just signatures, but brushstroke, provenance, known style, condition for its age, etc. Artists whose paintings can go for a few hundred into the millions are being forged, it's easy money for thieves and dishonest auction houses. Most auction houses have no true experts in anything, the best are at Christie's and Sotheby's although those auction houses play their various tricks as well. Many auction houses just have benign or not so benign neglect in that any painting with a signature is fair game for bid. read more

This review is from the perspective of a seller. Overall, I had an excellent experience with Leslie Hindman. I was looking to put a modestly priced glass sculpture up for auction, but I was in the midst of a move from Chicago to New York. Essentially, I was going to be kind of tough to work with, without offering LH a lot of value for their efforts. Nonetheless, LH and their representative, Cassia, handled everything, including working directly with a friend who was holding the item in storage to setup pickup and shipment on my behalf. The communication from Cassia throughout the process was sterling and always cheerful. It's hard to imagine improving on the end-to-end experience I had with Leslie Hindman. read more

From my first contact until the last at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers; I was treated with the utmost respect. All through the process; I kept in contact with a number of Quality People that understood and answered my concerns and questions. I Highly Recommend all of you to give Leslie Hindman Auctioneers a try. read more

bought an expensive clock from them on liveauctioneers in feb of 2014. when I went to pick it up it was obvious the case had been smashed and glued back together, and was even missing pieces. The " specialist " came out and was indignant about my issue. His recommendation was to have me consign it to them for resale. they clearly mis-represented the item and its condition. As is he said. Liveauctioneers provided no recourse. think twice before bidding on liveauctioneers, and three times before buying from LH. read more

I most likely will not buy through Hindman again. Their buyer premium is way over most other auction houses and when combined with taxes, adds over 40% to the Purchase price. As if that wasn't bad enough they don't do their own in house shipping and the shipping companies they recommend are ridiculously expensive. I had quotes for over $800 to ship a simple piece of art That had a purchase price of $500 I finally found a place to ship it for a "bargain" price of $215 so by the time I added the buyer's premium, taxes and the shipping I paid almost twice what I bid for my item. I buy from auctions on a regular basis and have never paid more than around $50 if not less, for shipping comparable pieces. so to use an auction house that has overly high buyers premiums, doesn't provide their own shipping services and recommends companies that charge very high shipping rates compared to their competitors and others in the industry makes a less than ideal auction house with which to do business read more

Everyone at LHA was extremely helpful in selling items from my parents' estate. I fully realized that the value of antique furniture has plummeted from what it was thirty years ago, but they were able to sell some of items at prices that exceeded my expectations. I found the staff to be forthright in setting realistic evaluations and very accommodating of all my various questions. I wouldn't hesitate to deal with them again. read more

I was am very very disappointed . As a dealer at the Winnetka antique and modernism show. Leslie come to the show and speak and talk about her auction house. And you happen to have an auction the same time as our show. You are not helping any of the dealers at the show you are promoting or taking away business from the dealers at the show. These dealers pay to have a space here. Very Bad etiquette!!! You have Brochures of your upcoming auctions and items in your auction this weekend all over the Winnetka Community house. How is that helping the show?? Won't be doing business with you company any more! read more

I had a few items I wanted to inquire about selling and contacted them. After 3 calls and a rather annoyed message on the last call...I finally received a call back. The woman who I spoke to barely apologized for not returning my calls and said "she had been busy". I mentioned what I wanted to sell and she told me what she felt one of pieces was worth. After I researched it further, I found out she had quoted me 1/10 of what I was told it was selling for in recent auctions. Not very impressive Anastasia. I think I will sell my pieces elsewhere. read more

i was working with auction house since 2012 , they were good up to the time which they joint to other online platforms, right now be careful bidding on their items. they mislead the buyers with the wrong titles and sell fake items, i have bought a box which the title was silver but it was silver plated , i have bought a silk tabriz rug from them which was indian artificial silk and i called them and no respond to me at all . so be careful or inspect the item personally or buy from somewhere else read more

Submitted an application with their website complimentary evaluation service. Never heard from them. Left a message via telephone asking why no response. Again nothing. Miserably inept or arrogant. It's one or the other. read more

Horrible customer service. "Specialists" do not care about the items they sell, esp. once it is sold. Bought gemstone ring, got condition report in advance and saw photos. When I received it, two stones were missing. When I inquired, I got a snarky, terse reply that they had done a condition report and all stones were present, too bad for me. Well, guess what. Stuff happens after condition reports are made--- like a million hands touching things at the pre-sale viewings. Really expect a better attitude towards paying customers if nothing else. Done with Leslie Hindman jewelry dept. Can you leave less than one star? read more

Zero stars if that was possible. My family has some art pieces that we were wishing to consign or place at auction. After filling out a form on their website, we assumed we would have heard back in a few days. After a few weeks of zero response (except for advertising emails form them), we called them. The receptionist said that the person who handles appraisals was in a meeting, and the receptionist advised us that the appropriate staff member would get back to us either later that day or on the next day. Guess what? No call. No email. After a few days, we called again. The receptionist told us to e-mail the information to them again. We did email again them plenty of photos and complete descriptions of the pieces. Again, no response. They don't have the courtesy of responding in any way, whether they are interested in our pieces, not interested, indifferent, etc. They just flat out ignored us all together. Truly unprofessional!!! I can see why Leslie Hindman has so many 1 star reviews, especially ones describing how Hindman is similarly unresponsive to other sellers. read more

I've been dealing with LH Auctioneers going way back to when they were located on Ohio Street. Since then they have grown tremendously and have added many more specialty sales. From affordable antiques to high valued art and jewelry, they seem to have it all. It's a fun and interesting way to find and bid on treasures. The staff is always very helpful when I go in for previews. I'm always buying, but if I ever sell anything, I would certainly give them a try. read more

I've never had an issue with Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. They are responsive and professional. They have some good items go for reasonable prices occasionally. I do think the buyers premium of 26% for internet bidding on their website is very high though. This seems to be common place now though among auctioneers unfortunately. read more
