But when they announced that they were opening Hair Salons again, I was so eager to get a haircut and what better way to get a haircut when my wife asked me to get a his and her haircut appointment with her regular Hair Stylist who she's been seeing for years now. Just the thought of having a Hair Stylist from Japan got me all excited because the last time I got a haircut in Japan it was an amazing experience and let's just say that Naoko from Axis Hair didn't disappoint. It was like being in Japan once again and her attention to detail from start to finish was what you would expect from a Japanese Hairstylist. It all started with a Shampoo and Head Massage and I swear that felt so amazing. That head massage almost knocked me out. Then it was time for the Hair Cut and from the start I knew I was in good hands. Great technique and although English isn't her strong point , she made me feel at ease. Her technique is simply amazing . You can just tell she's a seasoned pro and a perfectionist. She even trimmed around my eyebrows to make sure it was evened out. When all I was said and done, I was blown away at how perfect my haircut was. She made sure everything was even on both sides and just looking at myself in the mirror I was very happy with the end result. I'm gonna say this , it wasn't cheap getting a Shampoo and Cut but it was worth every cent and if I had the chance I would see Naoko every time I needed a Haircut I would do it in a heartbeat but my pockets aren't that deep to see Naoko every two weeks. Now I know why my wife has been seeing Naoko all these years. Naoko is the owner and only Hair Stylist here and she is so busy that she sees only her regulars and doesn't need the business because she's always booked and booking ahead is a definite must. One thing my wife noticed about Naoko is that she's very Clean and Thorough throughout the process. It's those little things that my wife sees that I don't. What I love about the Japanese culture is every worker greets you as you walk into their business/store, so I was immediately greeted and felt welcomed. I waited for a few minutes (good taste in music, right up my alley--Norah Jones, instrumentals to old school R&B and covers of Keyshia Cole). Took a seat and Naoko (the owner) asked what I wanted. For anyone going to a new salon that you've never been to before - you come prepared with detailed photos so there's no confusion, right? Right. So I was prepared. She gave me her advice since I showed her multiple pictures and said what she thought would work best with my hair type. After reaching an agreement, off to the shampoo-ing. Can I just say, I literally took a nap while I was getting my hair washed. The head massage was AMAZING! And, this was the first time that I went to a salon that they completely covered my face so I couldn't feel the little water splatters (which made it easier to relax). Very thorough shampoo job and would definitely recommend getting one for the massage. Afterwards, Naoko worked her magic! Talked with her about pretty much anything and everything. Glad that I could have a conversation with her since I was slightly afraid that there would be a language barrier. Then, to finish it off, she demonstrated ways to style my hair, which I liked. Booking with Dorene was easy and seamless through text, and she was able to fit me in on New Years Eve! The salon itself is in the Kaka'ako district. I've only ever been there a couple of times, so driving past all the mural decorated warehouses was so nice during the day. You can definitely see how unique and vibrant of a neighborhood it is. Parking was super easy; Nueve Salon has their own parking lot, and location wise is very easy to find. The salon is clean, bright, and well-kept, and I felt lucky to have been the only person in that day. Dorene took her time to explain what she was going to do, and ensured that she was able to execute exactly what I wanted without damaging my hair. After a couple of hours in the chair, some highlights, and a cut later, I felt lighter and like I had finally had some self care time (a rarity with kids). It had been a while since I had been and couldn't recall how long and the hair dresser just proceeded to tell me that it had been longer than I was saying and proving me wrong. I couldn't decide how I wanted to style it and asked for suggestions and she just said she doesn't give suggestions. This lasted the entire hair cut. I showed a picture and showed her to do it like that and she said, 'I'm just going to stick to what you said before.' Then I just finally said, 'do whatever you'd like.' I tipped her well because she did a great job, but it was a very uncomfortable experience. Quality work, not quality customer service. Will not be back.
