View from Himlen - Stockholm is Gorgeous!

If you want a stunning view of the city but can't afford to eat or drink here, don't worry you can still come up the elevator and as long as you don't bother any of the customers you will be welcome to snap some photos and have life long reminders of your time in Stockholm. I came around 3pm on a weekday, so the place was pretty slow. The light was beautiful (photographer tip: winter sunlight is much nicer than summer). I took about 10 pictures and left #noregrets. I almost came back for a drink after work, as I heard this is a good happy hour spot, maybe next time.

For Deb's 30th birthday meal, our friend suggested that we give Restaurang Himlen a try. It was his favorite restaurant when he was in Stockholm so I booked a reservation online. Almost every nice restaurant has an amazing view and Himlen's was no exception. Located 25th floors up, you get amazing views of the city looking across Sodermalm to the Katarina-Sofia area of the island. As you might expect, Himlen was not cheap and with two appetizers and two entrees, the bill came out to 1200 SEK with tip (~$171 USD). Deb's meal featured the potato pancake with Swedish bleakrow, lemon smetana, and pickled onion as her appetizer, followed by the baked lemonsole and Norway lobster with Jerusalem artichoke and brown butter with soy. In contrast, I decided to try the king crab and fried oyster with cucumber, melon, and avocado cream, followed by the poke belly with chanterelles, onions, celery puré and dill jus. While we enjoyed our dishes overall, none were totally mind-blowing and service felt a little bit impersonal. Service (or lack thereof) was a recurring theme across every dining experience. Because no tip is generally expected when eating out, there is simply no expectation of service. Himlen is worth a visit for the view and perhaps some cocktails. The overall experience was great, though the food itself was perhaps a 3.5 star meal.

Nice ambience. Wonderful cocktails. But bit too noisy on Friday evening. No crowd management.

With gorgeous views of the city, this lounge was a fun place to grab a drink and chat with friends. Nothing too special, but a good time!

I haven't tried the food here but it is the best viewpoint of Stockholm. So it is worth a drink to see the view.

The Swedes have a feeling of natural, open confidence & assertiveness that seems less pronounced in the other Scandinavian countries possibly because Sweden retained its militaristic spirit up until very modern times. Like in Berlin which also gives off a confidence that is so important for making a hot scene, the milieu at SLM exudes a very playful, experimental willingness to have a good time. It is also a very international scene with many players especially from all over Europe & North America. The first time I went was in the summer of 1993 where I went down a staircase and was met & welcomed by a young moustached member of SLM in a Swedish Navy officer's uniform. The entrance fee was nominal, & there is a bar where you can get good Swedish beer so you can cruise the bar w/ a beer in hand and check out the scene. There are plenty of different spaces to play in for those w/ different fetishes & inclinations. And you don't necessarily have to speak Swedish to join in. Sometimes body language, the look in the eyes, & wearing leder or a police uni speak louder than anything being said eloquently in any language. In 2002 I went down the same set of stairs, but found they had changed the set up enough that I couldn't relate to the way it was before. I suppose SLM changes the interior to keep the site from becoming too familiar & boring. However, the same friendly openness was still in force. I encountered two men from New York City, a bearded Sir & his bearded boy where 3 Americans met respectively 6,000 & 3,000 away from home. Later we accidently met at Drottningholm Royal Swedish Palace, which had a theater much like in the spirit of Teatro Olympico by the classical Renaissance architect, Andrea Palladio, in Vicenza, Italia, so the stars seemed aligned to our meeting. Nothing but good memories of Stockholm from visiting the Swedish Royal Palace, Kunliga Slottet & old town on Gamlastan Island just to the north of SLM. There is sophisticated culture of all different levels, but the happenings at SLM for me were the fondest to remember on my visit to Sverige. I want to thank the volunteer members of SLM who have really set up a great, welcoming space for all who come here. Skål! 5 Yelp stars for exceptional, warm hospitality.

Being a leather and fetish bar it requires dress code by the patrons. For women and straight people interested in BDSM and fetish there are other clubs and bars available. A couple of times SLM hosts open houses where non-members are welcome as well, e.g. around World AIDS Day and during Stockholm Pride. The bar is located in a basement of a house and one has to ring the door to be let in. Wardrobe, bar - everything is run by members. Kudos to them for helping others to enjoy themselves. To some a visit to a BDSM/leather/fetish bar may be perceived a scary and frightening but I have to say that this is one of the friendliest gay places I know in this city. Yes, there is a tough and cruisy attitude but also the possibility to actually talk with someone. I am not a member myself but I am always very delighted when I have gone during the open houses.

The bar is small, unassuming and finds itself on a street filled with conspicuous, Italian restaurants hosting happy hours for corporate Swedes. The bar is a standout for the drinks, the trademark Swedish charisma and genuine warmth. As a side, shout out to Sweden for having the nicest, most welcoming people in the world. We were given a standing table when we got in, but quickly moved to a couple of seats by the bar. We were one of 8 couples at the bar, so yes, very date night vibes. For our first round of drinks, we got the Easy Martini and Let them Eat Cake. The latter was too sweet for our liking but the Easy Martini had the perfect amount of sweet and tart. Our second round was the winner with the Girl Dinner and their Old Fashioned. The Girl dinner was crafted to perfection and possibly the best version of a martini we've ever had. The old fashioned too, made with WhistlePig 10 years was fantastic. The service cannot be faulted, we profusely thanked the lovely bartender, vowing to crow about it to whoever cares to listen and to be back when we are in Stockholm next.
